Welcome home. We are WNST AM 1570 Towson, Baltimore. We are Baltimore positive, positively into the National Football League season here. Luke’s going to be out training camp, or excuse me, not training anymore, like real camp in Owings Mills, the place where they do it each and every week. We’re getting ready for Brazil next week as well. We’re going to be doing the Maryland Crab Cake Tour beginning on the 24th at State Fair. We’ve now moved Pizza Johns to the second because there ain’t going to be no baseball playoffs here the following week. It’s all brought to you by friends at the Maryland Lottery. I will have the Ravens kiss face bird as part of our 28th Anniversary celebration kiss is number 28. So I, you know, I love this logo so much. It’s been lucky so far. Had a couple of 10-dollar winners last week at Costas. If you were tuning in on that in our 28th anniversary, we had Johnny O out. Next week we have Casper Wells, former big leaguer. We’re going to talk a lot of baseball and all-season baseball. Alan’s coming out. I’m trying to convince Luke to come out for some eggs and bacon at State Fair for breakfast. This guy, I’m gonna get him out before his turn is over at the Maryland Lottery. He’s the senior advisor, keeping us abreast of all things Maryland Lottery and gaming. And I know we’re into the gaming season here. John Martin returns here with the X’s and O’s. Finally, football season, right? Like I’m not gonna give you any Cleveland trouble or any of that, but for the rest of us, I’m saying it’s it’s football season. It
John Martin 1:26
it is, but I just before you turn the page, are are the O’s mathematically out?
Nestor Aparicio 1:31
I was thinking about this this morning. I mean, Pete Alonso getting honored in New York. They’re not, but like there’s a there’s a lot of teams in the way, including the Cleveland Guardians as well. And
John Martin 1:41
last night with two outs, two strikes, down by a run in the bottom of the ninth, it looked like all was lost, and then it wasn’t. When except you know it’s pennant
Nestor Aparicio 1:51
race baseball, John. Yeah, this is what makes it so. This is when the hair run rich is that much more exciting when Pete Alonso hits number 300. Quite a
John Martin 1:59
moment, huh? Yeah, curtain call and and and well, you you kind of expect it, but you know they love him
Nestor Aparicio 2:06
up there. We love babe. We love Scott, you and me, right?
John Martin 2:08
Why not? Why not? But well, the sexes and those
Nestor Aparicio 2:10
things. Let’s talk about this because football season started. Yes, when I hand these things out to folks, which I will be doing at State Fair on the 24th at Peach Johns on the second. Um, I always tell folks to make sure they’re downloading their app and doing all the things that they need to do for second chance prizes and all of that stuff. The X’s and O’s thing-I’m-it’s a brand new promotion. It’s Powerball oriented, and it doesn’t have anything to do with who’s going to win the game this week. So let’s start with that, and then you can teach me again because I want to educate folks about this. It’s
John Martin 2:38
going to take a process, and like with any new game when we introduce it to any of our lottery players, it takes a little while to to take hold. So this is a game brought to you by our friends at Powerball in concert with the NFL. And each week for the not only the regular season but throughout beyond 52 weeks a year, you have the opportunity to select eight logos from the 32 teams. Now again, you’re not picking who’s going to win the game. It has nothing to do with the actual football on the field. It’s an opportunity for you to select eight of your favorite teams to check off their logos, or you can maybe just pick your favorite team and have seven others randomly selected. The point is, you need eight logos to get started. Once a week, Sunday night, we will draw eight logos from the 32 little tiny helmets that bounce around, and those-if you match up eight of eight of those-you’ll win the top prize. Top prize is a million dollars. If you win seven of eight, match seven of eight-that’s the next tier prize: 654, Less than four matches, zero, no dollars. And this is
Nestor Aparicio 3:45
not a scratch off. This is this is this is a you can play this in any the vending machines anywhere it is. You select this. It’s part of the Powerball family. I want to make sure we’re getting this all right
John Martin 3:55
here. It is, and like Powerball, you get a a computer generated ticket. It will show you your eight teams that you are selected, you are selected or been selected for you Sunday night. The problem is I hate
Nestor Aparicio 4:06
all the rest of them. You know, it’s my team. How do I mean? I mean, I’m looking here and thinking, would I pick the Bills? Would I pick the Lion? I don’t know. I’m I’m looking. I mean, it’s not like I’m not familiar with these logos, John. I look at them all. I’m looking at them all the time here. But I don’t. Would anybody really pick Pittsburgh? I mean, seriously.
John Martin 4:27
Well, you can. Let’s start that early in the in the show. But you know, it is a lot of fun, and it’s you don’t really need to be a football fan, right? I mean, you don’t need.
Nestor Aparicio 4:37
Well, you’re trying to win money. I’m trying to play and have a good time. All right, I’m seeing it.
John Martin 4:41
So, so you can use quick pick
Nestor Aparicio 4:43
too, and and then the machine will quick pick, right?
John Martin 4:45
Absolutely, the machine will pick the all eight, or if you pick four, you win the machine to pick four, whatever. $5 per play. Check it out on Sunday night, the live draw, and then during sometime, I believe 10 o’clock in the evening. So you can check your app. You can check mdlottery.com to see who those eight teams are and see if you’ve matched 4567, or all eight. And then we play it again the next week.
Nestor Aparicio 5:12
John, I’ve been doing a lot of deep thinking lately. I haven’t shaved. You can see this. Okay, this is an existential question about anybody who loves sports. I know what your favorite NFL team is because of where you were born in the Northern Ohio area. You know where my favorite NFL team is because I’m here and I’m Baltimore. Does anybody really have a second favorite? You know what I mean? Like I’m thinking about because every team, especially your team, has had every other team beat it, you know. So I don’t have any nice thing to say about most of these other-not most. I mean, like I’m literally looking at this ticket right now, and I’m trying to sell this new game for Powerball, the X’s and O’s, and saying if I had to pick a second team, I don’t know that I could do it. I mean, I’m looking at it. I’m like, don’t like them. Don’t like them. They beat us. I don’t like them. Had a bad experience there in Philadelphia. You know, so I, you know, I just
John Martin 6:10
then maybe this game is not for you, Nestor. Maybe
Nestor Aparicio 6:12
I’d be nice to Seattle. I mean, you know, I mean, I like my, you know, like I can find when Marvin was in Cincinnati. I had something nice to go. Now you got it. Yeah, I put the picture up of me and Jerry Jones and Bob Kraft, but I got-I would never in in my life pick the Cowboys. I couldn’t even root for the Cowboys against John Harbaugh on Sunday night. What an absolute! We love football, don’t we? Yeah, we do. We
John Martin 6:35
do, and gets people talking about it. So hopefully, people have some fun. Not only with that, but they also have some fun with our Ravens scratch off. I was going to
Nestor Aparicio 6:41
say this is the primary thing here, right? This is the big banana.
John Martin 6:44
Oh, absolutely. And and as people know by now, if they’ve been paying attention, and if they haven’t been, if they’re new to our program, you can check out all the details at mdlottery.com. But each and every football season, we offer not one but two scratch off tickets at the $2 level, at the $10 level. You can win cash prizes on either of those games. But many people play for the chance to win second chance prizes, experiential prizes. The crown jewel in that are season tickets for 20 years. We already have one finalist. We will be drawing for our second of six finalists next week. So if you’re not yet in the My Lottery Rewards program or in the Second Chance Contest for Ravens tickets, please you’ve got some a few days left between now and we will draw on closing 920 September 20. We will draw on September 21 st for the second finalist for 20 years, as well as an away trip with the team to Charlotte, North Carolina, in November. Three winners and their guests will travel on the team plane to Charlotte. Hold pre-game experience, great tickets for the game, and hopefully come home with your favorite thing being served delights and delicacies by by Ravens players.
Nestor Aparicio 7:58
You know the Panthers beat the Ravens on my birthday back in 2006, october 14. Steve Smith caught a pass, ran right to me in the end. I was standing in the field. I was down with it. Like 30 seconds left to go. I could, but he was too fast. And he was coming at him. No, he was coming at me, and he held the ball up for me like this, dropped it, and the Panthers beat us on that day. Jake Delhomme, as I remember it, going deep into the corner. So I mean, the Panthers are one of those teams I’m not upset with. But let me just say this about your little competition and the fun I have giving these away. And I tell folks at Koco’s two weeks ago, at Costas last week, at State Fair next week, at Pizza Johns on the second. We’re gonna be doing this at Fishmonger’s Daughter, at Beaumont, everywhere. I tell them, download the app, use the second chance. This is how you win, and I am living proof, and you have made me living proof the last five years as our partnership here expands and evolves. That I have met these people who win these things, and they come on the show and they tell me that Roquan Smith brought them cheesecake on a train somewhere in New Jersey, coming back from New York after they just had a big hoot nanny in the in the Big Apple, and then I’ve had other people come on and they won tickets for life and they’re taking their daughter who was like 10 and she’s probably like 13 or 14 now because it’s been a couple years. So I meet these people. People really win, and it’s um, and it’s it is fun. It’s fun above and beyond. Sometimes, you know, the guy that I had the winning ticket last year, the $100 winner at Costas, he’s a regular there. I gave him a ticket the other day because he’s eligible to play again at Costas, and he’s like, you know, I’m the guy that won 100 bucks last year. I’m like, how can I forget you? You know, so people win, and and I have fun with it. I want everybody to have fun with it because it’s football season. So there, did I say my piece?
John Martin 9:48
You did, and well said. Just like I wrote it for you. Well done, well done, young man. So we have to script up. Go ahead, mdlottery.com. Check out all the amazing second chance prizes. Not only for Ravens tickets, but you know we have yet to put the final exclamation point on the baseball season. Much as you tried. Oh, here we go. Here we go. All right, we got one more week
Nestor Aparicio 10:10
of this, right?
John Martin 10:11
We got. We’ve got one more. Can we get one more Grand
Nestor Aparicio 10:14
Slam? Oh, two would be too many. Just give me one more Grand Slam, so I can watch you run around and have to come up with five grand while your team goes to the playoffs, and we sit here with our faces pasted to the door at State Fair next week, talking about how what could have should have would have woulda would have been.
John Martin 10:32
Well, that could have. You know, when you go to mblattery.com and check out the Home Run Riches Walk-off winning second chance contest, you will see that we have given away nearly $200,000 to players all season long. Five of those Grand Slams at $5,000 each, and our progressive jackpot on the ticket itself. People forget it is a $5 fast play ticket, progressive jackpot, well over $74,000. Now
Nestor Aparicio 10:56
that will hold over at the end of the year. What happens here? It will hold over
John Martin 11:00
until we have a winner, it held over
Nestor Aparicio 11:01
last year, right?
John Martin 11:03
Yes, began the year
Nestor Aparicio 11:04
with like 100. It was like 120 grand. It was a lot of money.
John Martin 11:07
In in a perfect world, the season will end whenever it ends, and we will have on on clean out your locker day. We’ll have somebody hopefully clean out our locker and and collect that final progressive. That would be ideal, but also ideal is we had a new experience this year called the VIP Truist Club experience, where we had six lucky contestants. We’ve had five of them already. One more to go. One of them
Nestor Aparicio 11:31
had a grand slam while they were in the box,
John Martin 11:35
and the video cameras were rolling.
Nestor Aparicio 11:37
One of them had a home run finally with two outs in the ninth inning, and they finally cashed in them last month. So it has been. Don’t undersell this, John Martin. This has been a dramatic summer for the truest club winners because it’s been. I don’t want to say it’s been an undramatic season because it’s not like they were in last place all year and it stunk all year. I mean, we had the wall thing that happened in Colorado. I mean, had a couple of moments, but like, if you won five grand in the truest suite, that’s a big deal. That’s a that’s that’s something you couldn’t do last year in the Maryland Lottery, which is competition, right?
John Martin 12:13
No, not all new this year, and and we are so pleased. I’m going to go way out on a limb, even though I’m only senior advisor and not director for next year’s season. I’m going to say we’re going to do this again next year. It was a lot of fun. And William Lee Jr. is our VIP game experience for the Toronto Blue Jays. You could put a hurt on the. Well, hold on. His name’s Bill Lee. Not not space. Do not do that. Do not. Okay, I’m just giving a baseball. It’s
Nestor Aparicio 12:39
a baseball reference. He
John Martin 12:40
is. He is from Upper Marlboro. The spaceman played
Nestor Aparicio 12:44
with my cousin with the Red Sox in ’73. You notice, right? I did when Louis gave me the baseball. When Louis that picture of me and Louis when I’m little, and I got a lot of pictures of Louis, but when I was little at Memorial State with my pop, that ball has Bill Lee’s autograph. Not your Bill Lee, but it’s a different Bill. I love this, William Lee.
John Martin 13:02
This is William Lee Jr. Maybe he’s the spaceman’s.
Nestor Aparicio 13:06
I met the spaceman once too. He’s cool, but go ahead, keep going. Yeah, yeah,
John Martin 13:09
yeah, yeah. So we’re all going to be in William Lee Jr. corner on the 22nd of September when he is the VIP experience player of the game, and we hope that he has home runs, grand slams. We hope he gets the full experience. Goes to the buffet two or three times, gets some beverages, and really has a great, great time.
Nestor Aparicio 13:28
Nicknames are great for baseball players, right? Space man. You know what I mean? We don’t. They don’t make them like that anymore. You know, why not? Chris, Chris Berman was like the best ever at doing it. I think. But we had. I mean, every Oriole player of this. This is before Chris Berman, the Dipper. You know what I mean? You know what I mean. We had we had names for play. The B, Al Bumbry, right? So it was a simpler time, wasn’t it? Baseman, it was John. You know
John Martin 13:54
what’s a you know what’s a constant though?
Nestor Aparicio 13:57
Go ahead. You you can do you you. Let me say this is John Martin, senior advisor of the Maryland Lottery, and you’re an old radio guy, so I’m going to let you do
John Martin 14:04
all. I’m old. I don’t know about the radio part. I’m definitely an old guy.
Nestor Aparicio 14:07
You can do the transition. Go ahead. Yeah,
John Martin 14:08
yeah, yeah. What’s fun is is things that that are nostalgic. You’re talking about names. How about great TV shows? And one of the greatest, The Price Is Right, is once again a scratch off with the Maryland Lottery, and go to mdlottery.com, learn more about the Price Is Right game itself, the $5 scratch-off game, where the top price is $50,000. But more importantly, if you have a non-winning ticket, you can enter it into our game show experience drawing, where you and a guest may win an opportunity for a five-day, four-night trip to Los Angeles, California. That’s Hollywood,
Nestor Aparicio 14:44
California, John Morgan.
John Martin 14:46
There you go. There you go. Round trip coach airfare, all the fees, ground transportation, room accommodations, four nights, $1,000 spending money. So a little something you can you can. And
Nestor Aparicio 15:00
maybe a fist bump from Drew Carey, maybe,
John Martin 15:03
maybe, maybe, because you will be invited to the taping of the Price Is Right TV game show as an audience member. But more importantly, you will have a special game called the Game Show Experience, where you go to a different venue for a chance to win a share of a cash prize up to $10 million. We will have winners from multiple lotteries coming together to play a special game and share that cash prize.
Nestor Aparicio 15:29
I met Drew Carey once. He was cool, man. Yeah, you know, I met him in Cleveland. I have a picture of me and Drew Carey on the field at the 1997 All Star Game at then at then Jacobs Field, then Jacobsfield.
John Martin 15:42
Wow, that must have been like the beefed up Drew Carey.
Nestor Aparicio 15:47
Ah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It was back in comedian. It was back Cleveland Rocks. It was that era, I think, was 30 years ago. So yeah,
John Martin 15:54
was he still on the air? Did the show was? I think
Nestor Aparicio 15:56
it was very much. He was a big, big star. To take a picture with him there in Cleveland. He was well, you know. Arsenio was from Cleveland too. Joe Walsh and I have a picture on the field at at that All Star game. I mean, it was a that was a great All Star game at the but it was 29 years ago. Come on, it’s crazy, and your team’s going to make the playoffs next week. And well,
John Martin 16:18
you keep putting that out there, and it’s not going to come through. But well, I’m looking forward to
Nestor Aparicio 16:22
one more week of great baseball pennant race baseball. Somebody’s going to win this progressive in home run riches. Somebody’s going to go to to L.A. on The Price is Right. We’re going to have a good time with that. Did I leave anything else out here? I mean, we’ve had so many things going on. I know you got a bunch of new games as well, including a one that has the Hispanic heritage of you know the first time I saw a lotoria was when I was was in Venezuela when I was a boy. So there, I just want to give you that. Yeah. So you mentioned that to me like two weeks ago because it was a new promotion and I didn’t really check it out because it’s like new fast play games you got going on here for the fall. And I’m like, yeah, yeah, I know about that when I was a boy.
John Martin 17:00
Yep, yep. Fast play again. Go to mdlottery.com to to see the the most recent fast play tickets. Next week we’ll be announcing another lineup of new scratch off tickets. Little tease there. So check your 4200 plus lottery retailers next week to see what might. Am I going to want
Nestor Aparicio 17:17
that one more than want the Ravens for me? I’m I’m I’m in on the Ravens through Christmas. I know you you
John Martin 17:22
yeah you know you’re no go on the Ravens.
Nestor Aparicio 17:24
I’m in on the Ravens through Valentine’s Day because you know the Super Bowl’s Valentine’s Day, right? Okay, that’s fine. I’m in. It’s fine. You know they’re number one in the power rankings, John Martin. I don’t know if you know that or not. They won last week. They went to Indianapolis and they won.
John Martin 17:37
I tell you what, I didn’t know who’s number one, but I know who’s 32.
Nestor Aparicio 17:40
That’s because there’s not 33.
John Martin 17:42
Yeah, right. Exactly. Exactly. Hey, you know, we talked about a couple. We talked several weeks ago about a billion-dollar Powerball. You may recall that conversation. I did not one here, unfortunately. I had a suit all ready for the occasion, but it’s still sitting in the closet. But it was one in Illinois. It was, in fact, the second-largest lottery price in Illinois history at $1.04 billion, and I just want to share this brief winner story. While it’s not ours, it’s it’s still it it could have been right. Could have been this guy, and I don’t know the guy because anonymous. The the player chose a quick pick $2 ticket, one ticket, quick pick. Didn’t even have numbers. Were birthdays, anniversaries. Just
Nestor Aparicio 18:23
wanted to be in on the billion dollars. Want to be on the billion
John Martin 18:26
dollars? One take Quincy, Illinois. Do you know where Quincy, Illinois is? You have a hard time finding half of Maryland, but do you know where Quincy, Illinois is? Come
Nestor Aparicio 18:32
on now, I am so much better at navigating than most anybody you know because I have this Quincy, Illinois. Let me see if I’ve ever driven through Quincy, Illinois. Boy, you’ve
John Martin 18:43
had kudos to you.
Nestor Aparicio 18:44
Um, yeah, I think I have. No, I got no. No, that’s too south. No, I’ve never been to Quincy. Quincy’s like if you were going from Chicago to Kansas City through Peoria. I mean,
John Martin 18:58
sure. This is yeah.
Nestor Aparicio 18:59
This is like a top Sawyer Kocher. Yeah, yeah. It’s right. It’s on the it’s on the Mississippi. It’s on the mighty
John Martin 19:05
Mississippi. Yep, yep, right. Yeah, that’s right. That’s right. Very, very good. Good for you. Upriver from St.
Nestor Aparicio 19:09
Louis.
John Martin 19:10
Exactly. Exactly. I’m here in the
Nestor Aparicio 19:12
steamship. Yeah,
John Martin 19:15
but so so you’re getting a rural kind of you know throwback in time Mark Twain era type book. Totally. So that’s Quincy. So person walks in, has two bucks. They see this billion dollars, put it down. Don’t even have special numbers. Computer picks it out. Bam, $1.04 billion winner.
Nestor Aparicio 19:33
I am so glad that you had me look up where Quincy, Illinois, is because like I’ve heard Quincy, Illinois million times, but like I looked it up, I’m like, wow, that’s like really a place. When you say you live in the middle of like, it’s three four hours from any city. Wow, St. Louis is probably close. Well, a billion dollars will buy a lot of well, it’ll buy half of that reach. I think. Well, maybe more than that. I’m not sure. It’s yeah. I zip coded that out. John Martin is here. He is the senior advisor for all things Maryland lottery and gaming. It’s September, John. I know you have some special messaging for folks here, and it is very, very important, especially having done sports radio here for 35 years. That bet, bet, bet, bet used to be like a Fred Flintstone joke, and my dad with the pool cards. But it is incredibly accessible for folks to get involved in sports wagering in all sorts of exotic, weird. Let’s do it now. Let’s do it now. Let’s do it now. Ways that like horse racing only happen once every 3040, minutes. It is a very active time of the year for those whose minds move toward sports wagering in a way that might be unhealthy.
John Martin 20:40
Yeah, and absolutely, we should probably before I ride off into the sunset here, maybe do a show on on the topic. I mean, when you look at at the the the accessibility and you know people again who have listened to us, unprecedented,
Nestor Aparicio 20:54
unprecedented, Clay. Yeah,
John Martin 20:56
but it’s it’s education. You know, if if you’re going to play a game, whether it’s walking into a casino, buying a lottery ticket, whatever, doing a sports wagering, know the game, understand what you’re playing, have a budget, have a time limit if you’re walking into a casino, and and and set that. It’s ideally do it in a social environment. You know, you and a friend, so you’re you’re kind of helping each other out there and and moderating it. So it can be very addictive behavior. I mean, studies know that we know that it can be very troublesome for young males. Quite frankly, especially as you tie it to sports. I mean, I never met a a 20 year old, 22 year old kid who didn’t think he was you know the the expert in in sports, and and with wagering being 21 plus, you have the the illegal markets, and you have other ways, prediction markets that can appeal to people less than 21. So it’s a concern. I know when we come into the general session in the Maryland General Assembly in 2027, while I won’t be there, there will be a lot of talk about responsible gaming, a lot of talk about guardrails for our our younger Marylanders, and clearly we take that responsibility head on. We work with a number of other agencies to to put those guardrails to educate as best we can. No one wants to be anti-gaming. We we drive a lot of gaming revenue to drive very very worthwhile programs for all Marylanders throughout the state. But education guardrails, responsible play-those are the things that really need the attendance going forward. And you know we’re doing what we can each and every day to make sure it’s a safer, more responsible environment, and we hope players heed those warnings and get educated about the games that they play.
Nestor Aparicio 22:49
Well, you know, as of 35 years of doing sports radio here, I know, and and your relationship with me over the five years of like bringing this in and bringing it online, it’s something folks wanted. It’s something that I see even when I’m out. I was at Costas last week during a ball game, watching folks, you know, engage and win and talk about winning and losing and whatnot. Just I always encourage folks just be smart about this and and and slow your roll a little bit, especially this time of year when it could be exciting and fun.
