With plenty of games in progress, we know that the NFL is kicking off this week and John Martin of The Maryland Lottery is here to give Nestor the Xs and Os of a new Powerball game kickoff just in time for the season. Plus, plenty of big winners all over the state this week as the Maryland State Fair concludes.

The discussion centered on launching Powerball X’s and O’s in Maryland and promoting related lottery football offerings for the NFL season.

New Game

  • John announced Powerball X’s and O’s, available starting September 8 at Maryland Lottery retailers.
  • Players pick 8 NFL team logos, or use computer-generated picks; drawings begin September 13 and continue weekly year-round.
  • Prizes discussed: the jackpot starts at $1 million and grows until won; lower tiers include $20,000 for 7 of 8, $500 for 6 of 8, $40 for 5 of 8, and $7 for 4 of 8.
  • John clarified that the game is a draw game only and is not tied to actual NFL game outcomes.

Other Promotions

  • John reported a $4.2 million Multi-Match jackpot ticket was sold in Riverdale and had not yet been claimed.
  • The Ravens scratch-off second-chance promotion remains active; entries for the Charlotte team-trip drawing must be submitted by September 20.
  • John also promoted other second-chance programs and emphasized Responsible Gaming Education Month guidance: know the rules, set limits, and play intentionally.
  • Open question: Has the $4.2 million Multi-Match winner claimed the prize yet?

  • Play the new NFL X’s and O’s Powerball game next week and then prepare a clear explanation of how to play it for listeners once the football season begins. (@Nestor Aparicio)
  • Invite the 7-Eleven customer who purchased the winning $20 Extreme Green scratch-off ticket to appear on the WNST show to tell his story. (@Nestor Aparicio)
  • At the September 11 Maryland Crab Cake Tour stop at Costas in Dundalk, distribute Ravens scratch-off tickets and actively encourage attendees to enter them into the Ravens Second Chance promotion to pursue the Charlotte trip prize. (@Nestor Aparicio)

NFL Game Launch

  • Introduction of Powerball X’s and O’s as a new Maryland Lottery game tied to NFL branding.
  • Explanation of gameplay: choose 8 team logos manually or via computer pick.
  • Review of draw timing, jackpot structure, and lower-tier prizes.
  • Clarification that results do not depend on real football outcomes.

Existing Promotions

  • Update on the unclaimed $4.2 million Multi-Match win in Riverdale.
  • Discussion of the Ravens scratch-off second-chance contest and the Charlotte trip entry deadline.
  • Mention of additional second-chance offers, including The Price Is Right trip experience.
  • Update on Home Run Riches payouts and remaining baseball-season promotions.

Responsible Play

  • Reminder that September is Responsible Gaming Education Month.
  • Guidance to understand each game, set budgets and time limits, and stay intentional while playing.

Nestor Aparicio 0:01
Welcome home. We are WNST AM 1570 Towson, Baltimore. We are Baltimore Positive. I’m wearing my Costas Dundalk gear here because we’re kicking off the NFL season where I kicked it all off in Dundalk. I’ll be there on the 11th next Friday doing the Maryland Crap Cake Tour presented by our friends at the Maryland Lottery. I’ll have the Ravens Kiss Face Bird, which has been a very lucky bird at Koco’s, and as well as Fishmonger’s daughter two weeks ago. Also, our friends at GBMC putting us out on the road all fall long. And Farnander, they are the comfort guys and comfortably into sports where we have a real pennant race going on. We have real football that’s going to begin, and we have real lottery-not just information, but fun things that tie into baseball. Football tis the season to give money away. We’ve got NFL promotions. We’ve got some awareness that we want to make everybody about betting during this time of the year. John Martin’s here. He is the senior advisor for all things Maryland lottery and gaming, and we’re getting into the gaming season here. Look, I just want to say this: when we hit home runs, home run riches pays. When you steal home runs, is there any fine print, anything we can put in the codicils to say when Colton Koza goes over the wall like that that somebody wins some money? No,

John Martin 1:27
no. But but it it is fun to talk about, isn’t it? But but before we get to that, I’ve got breaking news. What do you got? And if nothing else, before I leave these airwaves, I’m going to somehow get you a breaking news sounder so that we can get all the stuff.

Nestor Aparicio 1:42
Breaking news only comes in one sound, and it’s the first strains of Baba O’Reilly, and everyone knows that. So go ahead.

8

John Martin 1:48
Hey, we’ve been talking about our multi-match jackpot for the last several weeks, and its methodical inch-by-inch climb to 4.2 million dollars. It was won within the last week in Little Riverdale. Have you been to Riverdale? Is

Nestor Aparicio 2:03
is Riverdale like near Annapolis? I think it is. Is that right?

John Martin 2:08
Well, no, I’m wrong about that. Kind of. No, is

Nestor Aparicio 2:12
River? Is River? Riverdale’s like on 95 somewhere. Hold on, I’ve seen the signs for it. I’m gonna have to look it up. This

John Martin 2:17
wasn’t even the tough part.

Nestor Aparicio 2:19
You got me, man. You came right out of the gate. I don’t have my Google Map open. Well,

John Martin 2:23
while you get your map, my Google Maps not

8

Nestor Aparicio 2:25
even reading things the right way these days. All right, I

John Martin 2:28
will tell both our listeners while you’re doing that that it was a 4.2 million dollar jackpot purchased at Town Center Market. The winner has not yet come forward. So

Nestor Aparicio 2:38
yeah, Riverdale’s on 95. It’s like PG Montgomery. It’s on. It’s on the Prince George’s County side. I’m okay. I know where it is. Okay, I’m bad. Sorry,

John Martin 2:46
that’s all right. That’s all right. Commanders

Nestor Aparicio 2:49
fans down there. They they you know

John Martin 2:51
you don’t know that. We don’t know that. But that wasn’t the issue. The issue was they have a winning 4.2 million dollar multi match jackpot, and they need to come forward at their convenience. They have 182 days to claim that prize, so get your fares in order because you know 4.2 million even after taxes. That that’s kind of healthy. That that that’s that’s a nice little payday. So and they is that the biggest

Nestor Aparicio 3:12
one ever? Then right? I mean, it was kind of

8

John Martin 3:14
the biggest one. Biggest one goes back way back in the archives to May of 2022, when a Westminster man won 5.1 million. that is the all-time high watermark for multi-match. But 4.2, it gets you in the top five. I don’t think it’s a medal winner. I don’t think it’s on the on the medal stand for the top three, but it’s definitely in the top five. It’s up there. But yeah, and and of course the retailers, our buddies Jimmy and Ted down there, they they get a nice little bonus for selling that that winning ticket. I bet they’re

Nestor Aparicio 3:44
Commanders fans because they’re 7.8 miles away from where the Commanders play football. I’m just saying, look, it’s football season. We got to delineate. I can’t. All

John Martin 3:51
right, you want to get the football turned to pick the Steelers

Nestor Aparicio 3:53
people, the Eagles people, the Commander. This is not the time. It’s like thinking right now about like Guardians fans or like you know what I mean. Teams are in the way. Blue Jays teams in the way.

John Martin 4:04
Do not do that. We we guardians will will will have we’ll have some some time for that. But let’s talk

Nestor Aparicio 4:10
peacetime right now. Is what we’re doing.

John Martin 4:11
We’re we’re going to the NFL. I’m doing my show, Nestor. You just got to go along for the ride here, will you? Okay, I’ll do it. We have a new game. We’re very excited about here in in Maryland Lottery land, in concert with our friends at Powerball, and with the endorsement and support of the National Football League, the NFL. You heard of them, haven’t you?

8

Nestor Aparicio 4:31
Yes, I’m on the website here. There’s an X’s and an O’s thing and an NFL logo right on the front of MD Lottery. So now I, but I’m I’m clicking. I’m intrigued. I I don’t. I have. I didn’t get the briefing on this, so I don’t know what the. I. I’m going to learn when my listeners learn here. So let’s do

John Martin 4:47
this. So so here’s the briefing. Starting next Tuesday, the eighth, you can purchase at any of our 4,200 plus lottery retailers, whether at the counter or as a self-service vending machine. A Powerball X’s and O’s ticket. It’s a draw game ticket. And if you don’t know what X’s and O’s mean in the context of NFL, then don’t buy the game. The X’s

Nestor Aparicio 5:13
and O’s in the Jimmies and Joes.

John Martin 5:15
Is

Nestor Aparicio 5:15
that good?

John Martin 5:16
So well, yeah, yeah, not bad. Yeah, John

Nestor Aparicio 5:18
Madden, I think was

8

John Martin 5:19
so. So the whole idea is you pick eight team logos. There are 32 teams in the NFL. Yes, the the Browns are one of them. I know you want to make a joke there, but no, there are 32 teams in the NFL. You pick eight of them, and you’re picking actually their logo. So boy, you know people around here may pick the Ravens. They may pick the Eagles. Nobody will pick the Steelers. They may pick you know Jacksonville, whatever. So you pick all eight logos, or you can have the computer pick eight logos. Or if you have, let’s say, two favorite teams, you want to pick the Ravens and the Commanders, and the computer can then pick the other six teams. So you can take the

Nestor Aparicio 6:06
Bills, or you can take the Eagles, right? Like that, right?

John Martin 6:09
Very nice. Or you

Nestor Aparicio 6:10
could take, let’s say, the Packers or the 40 Niners, right? Like that. Just the logos, just like this, right?

John Martin 6:17
Exactly. Okay. Sort of close. Right. Yeah. Yeah. But the ticket. What about

Nestor Aparicio 6:21
them? Nobody, nobody picks them. Okay, please,

John Martin 6:24
please. You have to have a logo. That’s that’s that’s the that’s the ante into the game. You got it. You have a logo. That’s fine. But the point is, you pick eight teams on a play slip, or the computer picks that, and you wait for the draw. The draw will be every Sunday night, starting with september 13, all through and beyond the NFL season. This is a year-long game. It’s intended to go all 52 weeks of the year, and for $5 spend, you are in the game for a million-dollar jackpot, starting at a million-dollar and grows every week. And you need to get eight of eight to get the jackpot. If you get seven logos of the eight that are selected, you win $20,000.06. of eight, $500.05. of eight, $40.04. of eight, $7. You have kicked the extra point, and there you have it. Seven bucks, and we do not pay off for anything less than four. So that’s that’s the the top level stuff. I think it’s very intriguing. We’re excited about it. The game is not in every state. There will be 24 jurisdictions, 23 states plus the District of Columbia. Now this comes online

8

Nestor Aparicio 7:42
next Tuesday, right?

John Martin 7:44
september 8 is the same. All right, so on the on the

Nestor Aparicio 7:46
11th, I’m going to be Acosta’s and Dundalk.

John Martin 7:50
Yes, and I’m going to be

Nestor Aparicio 7:50
really honest with you and throw myself on the mercy of all lottery players and my whole audiences. I don’t understand what you just said to me about how to play this game, but I’m going to go play it and try to figure it out because I want to explain it better because it it is sort of new and I want to be able to explain it so I’m gonna go play it next week or figure out how to play it so that once we get into the season because people are gonna want to play this right it’s got it’s NFL branded right

John Martin 8:15
so so maybe maybe too complex here’s the track here’s here’s the does

Nestor Aparicio 8:20
my team have to win or no?

8

John Martin 8:22
No, it has nothing. It’s nothing to do with Sunday. Nothing to do with the actual game. Thank you. Okay. All right. See, this has nothing to do

Nestor Aparicio 8:28
with the little pool cards my dad brought home that he shouldn’t have been. Okay. We don’t have to pick games. It’s not an inducement to wager. Nope. Nope. This is like they could be cherries and bananas. They’re just NFL logos instead.

John Martin 8:40
Correct. Or they could be Powerball numbers, right? They could be

Nestor Aparicio 8:43
numbers. Okay, understood. But no, no, I got it. So

John Martin 8:46
instead of picking numbers like you do on a Powerball, you’re picking team logos. Got it. Has no tie at all to what actually happens that week, or if your team’s on a bye week, doesn’t matter.

Nestor Aparicio 8:58
Got it. Okay. All right. Thank you. Now I am better.

John Martin 9:02
Yeah, and but wait, there’s more as as we’re fond of saying around here. We’re giving money away, as you might expect. In addition to the cash prizes, we will have wonderful second chance opportunities throughout the season, and prizes can include throughout the season. So look for it. Things as cool as NFL shop gift cards to purchase your favorite NFL team officially licensed products, unique NFL experiences like potentially trips to draft day combine, and of course Super Bowl. I lost track of what we are. Are we at 61?

8

Nestor Aparicio 9:43
One, maybe. Yeah.

John Martin 9:44
Yeah. Yep. So all these things will be part of the second chance prizes available. So if you don’t win the million-dollar-plus prize, if you don’t win seven bucks, please do not discard those tickets. Enter them in to to the second chance drawing and. Each and every week, that jackpot will grow until it’s hit, and then it will reset at a million dollars, and we’ll start the process again. So, a new game, an exciting game, a little different, but really appealing to our folks who who enjoy Ravens football, who enjoy the NFL, who maybe have a different team that they prefer to root for, and now you can root for them on a Powerball draw every Sunday night, starting on september 13. The

Nestor Aparicio 10:26
only team that matters here is this team right here, the Baltimore Ravens. I will be at Costas next week doing the Maryland Crab Cake Tour. It is the Ravens scratch off. I’ll have these to give away, and we have winners. We have pass for cash. We have tickets for 20 years. We have all the cool experiential prize, including a trip to Charlotte, North Carolina. Let’s talk a little football here, John. By the way, I was going to say you know everybody can win except these guys here, and and and maybe these guys too. They don’t win a whole lot either. But but in regard to winning, and in regard to the Ravens, we’ve got our first round. Correct. We’re into the first month of this, and we’re passing for cash, and we’re still drawing. We haven’t we don’t have a Charlotte winner yet, though, right? But that’s coming soon, right?

John Martin 11:06
That is correct. Matter of fact, I’ll have to peek ahead and see when that is. But yes, people can go to mdlottery.com and click on the Ravens Second Chance Prizing contest there, and we have. Let’s see if I can. You need to. If if you’re interested in the potential winning the the team trip to Charlotte, you have to enter by September 20th. Yeah,

Nestor Aparicio 11:32
I knew it was getting up on it because you picked it. You know, you got. And the the game’s not that late in the season, so we. No, the game is

John Martin 11:37
right around Thanksgiving. It’s the november 22. Mike, listen. Let’s

Nestor Aparicio 11:42
go off script here for a minute. I was at Koco’s last. There’s a script.

8

John Martin 11:45
Wait a minute. There’s a script.

Nestor Aparicio 11:46
I’m going off script. Last week at Koco’s, I had these to give away and had a big stack of them, and and a lot of people. There was lunchtime. I was at Fishmongers the week before. They weren’t open that day, so I didn’t give as many away. So I gave more away. So I’m giving away, and a gal comes up and like ask me about second chance and said, “Well, I didn’t win. I said, “Losing ticket, give me a winning ticket. I’m like, “No, no, no, second chances. I want to give you some oxygen to tell her what I would tell her exactly about downloading apps because the one thing I used to be able to do was zap it for them and say you won or didn’t. Now I register in to zap it, so I don’t zap them anymore because it’s sort of against the rules. But I really highly encourage folks that this is the way that you get to Charlotte or the way you get to the Super Bowl. The way you get to any of the the second chance, it’s just so important, and I think it’s really fundamental to what we do here at the lottery. In addition to giving tickets away, to let people know if you want to win these big bananas, download that app and zap the tickets because that’s the best way to do

John Martin 12:43
it. You can get information about our Maryland lottery second chance promotions. My lottery rewards is the program we’re talking about here. And not every game, but a fair number of our scratch off games, our draw games have opportunities to extend the life of the purchase beyond just the cash that that is immediate response, and and be staged for drawings that happen in the coming weeks, and whether that’s in this case for the Ravens, a trip for you and a guest to ride on the team plane to Charlotte and get all the the benefits of that, and perhaps it is our new Prices Right scratch-off game, where second chance winners can win a trip to Los Angeles to actually get a taping of the actual Prices Right game. Come on down, spin the wheel, baby, as well as participate in a game show experience, which is not broadcast for air, but is an experience where you can win a share of $10 million, we have a variety of other promotions that that are available. So check them all out. Some of them may appeal to you more than others. You can take your accumulated points and put them towards those second chance opportunities. And we wish you the best of luck.

Nestor Aparicio 13:59
That’s what I meant to tell her in the back of Koco’s. But I had to go back and do the show last week. John Martin is here. He’s a senior advisor for all things at Maryland Lottery, putting up with me and all of my funny NFL logos here this week. We started with baseball. Yes, cows are going over the wall. Yep, and how we need more home runs. One thing that helps home runs usually is Coors Field. Usually, that I I feel like if you were to say to me, “Hey Ness, you know you’re gonna you’re gonna win home run rich is picking night. I’m like, “What night did they play at Coors Field, and who’s pitching? You know, you have four hits, steal a home run, you can’t pay for that. But I know we’re getting to the end of the year; it’s adding up a little bit. Gunner hit a couple the other day. We need some more salamis, and more than any, John, I just want to celebrate this. And I know, in your heart of hearts, you got some Cleveland baseball date deep down in there, and I got some Baltimore baseball in me as well. It is really nice that it’s September. Both of our teams are independent race. You would say that, right? That’s nice. As we. Speak, although it is a fragile thing. No, no, no! It’s a race of the undead, and we’re all going to be in this to the end. Trust me.

John Martin 15:07
Well, there’s a whole nother campaign. Hey, I don’t know that my friends at the Colorado lottery participated in Homer Riches. Boy, they’d be they’d be teeing those things up left and right if if they had to play 80 plus games. I haven’t talked much about

Nestor Aparicio 15:21
them, and I was up late watching the games. But my wife and I were watching on Tuesday. It’s like there’s nobody there. The team’s been there 30 years. I’m thinking the pitchers don’t want to sign there. Like that’s really part of the issue. Like really, like I’ve had Denny Nagel pitched here. He’s a friend of mine. I know it hurt his feelings. You know, pitching there. But I, from a home run perspective, it’s nice for for the long ball. I think you know. Let’s hit let’s hit some more home runs. We’re down to the nitty gritty with home runs. We are. We

John Martin 15:48
are. Matter of fact, as we speak, and I don’t know, did they hit any last night?

8

Nestor Aparicio 15:52
Let me. I will check. I’ll check in. Yeah. Go ahead.

John Martin 15:56
All right. I’m checking. But independent last night, we have given away $184,000 in what is called our home run riches walk-off winnings second chance, and again go to mdlottery.com for more details. Although you can no longer enter because the entry period is over, we’re playing out the string. But Jackson

Nestor Aparicio 16:14
Holiday cost you 500. Okay, yeah,

John Martin 16:17
all right. So we’re 184.5. I

Nestor Aparicio 16:21
like the games where we score 13 runs better. Those are my favorites. Well,

John Martin 16:24
everybody does unless you’re giving up 14, but unless you’re paying

Nestor Aparicio 16:27
out for home run riches like you are, but that’s okay.

8

John Martin 16:30
Yep, yep. And don’t forget, we have a progressive jackpot with the game itself, the $5 scratch off game, as we speak, over $68,000 if you happen to get the jackpot on that game. I always forget

Nestor Aparicio 16:41
to mention that.

John Martin 16:42
Well, I don’t. Last year it held

Nestor Aparicio 16:44
over at the end of the year, right? It

John Martin 16:46
did. It did. So we’re we’re we’re we’re anticipating that we’re going to be able to to wrap that up before we get into next season. But you’re right. Five Grand Slams, which paid off $5,000, and our VIP experience. We had another great winner here in in the month of August, we have one left in September. If you haven’t seen any of those videos, our man Mike, who is at the game with the winners, recording their every emotion. So when a ball leaves the yard, whether it’s a solo shot or a grand slam, you get to see it live when people actually. John, you’re

Nestor Aparicio 17:21
missing the lead here. First things first, they played home run riches back in the spring. They won. Doug called them. They didn’t believe it. Doug called them and said every home run is going to be 500 bucks. Grand Slam’s going to be, you know, 5,000. They didn’t believe, and they said, no, no, no. Better, you’re the truest club winner. We got to get a night to bring you down to the ballpark so we can do it that night. And then they get there that night. They’ve already won a little bit of money. They’re eating good. They’re living right. Ballpark. Hopefully, they get nice weather, not a thunderstorm like we had Monday night in Colorado. And then they actually every at bat, they’re like on the wire when like Alonzo’s up and hits the ball right over the foul pole, and maybe make right. Literally, they’re on all of this. You forgot all. That’s how much fun it is when they win. I think.

John Martin 18:09
Yeah, what he said.

8

Nestor Aparicio 18:11
All right, I’m supposed to be the one with enthusiasm here today on all of this. Hey,

John Martin 18:15
this is we’re we’re in you know Hatchfield McCoy territory here, pal. You know, it is coming. It’s next week. Next week,

Nestor Aparicio 18:22
Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, you’re going to be really personally rooting against more home runs than less home run. I need more Jackson Holidays and more Gunner Andersons, and this guy they signed for the Mets. Let him in a couple too.

John Martin 18:33
Yeah, it should be fun. It is a lot of fun. I’m married to a

Nestor Aparicio 18:38
Red Sox fan. It’s a tough month. Oh, John Martin is here. He’s the senior advisor for all things Maryland Lottie. All right, so you got winners this week. Yes, we do. And I’ve I’ve got my map quest up right now because I want to make sure when you ask me where some places that I

John Martin 18:53
Riverdale was the was was the tease. You you I’m 0 for one. That one. So sometimes I’m looking to get in a second chance promotion. Be being the media star that you are, you know sometimes when you write things, they sound good, and then when you see them in print, it’s like maybe a better way to say that. So I will just I will just hit you with this headline from our store.

Nestor Aparicio 19:14
Every good social media joke I’ve ever had has been something like that. But go ahead.

8

John Martin 19:18
Okay, here it is. Little package holds $1 million prize for Gwen Oak Man. I might have written that differently had I been in charge. Go ahead, fine.

Nestor Aparicio 19:31
Keep going.

John Martin 19:32
So

Nestor Aparicio 19:33
I’m laughing already.

John Martin 19:34
Yep, yep. A Baltimore County man went to get some pizza for the for to bring home for the family, and we all do that, right? Grab a pizza, come home because it’s easy, it’s good. He said he was a little disappointed on the size of the box, and maybe he misordered or whatever the deal was, but he was disappointed that that it was a it was a little box, it was a small package for the for the pizza. So he said, ah. I’m I’m I’m I’m gonna I’m gonna go get another pizza, so he gets in the car. For some reason, he is diverted to a 711 store on his way and decides he’s going to pick up a few scratch offs. And again, he was disappointed because in 711, great partner of ours, but they do have a small display in the counter. So he was disappointed. Did he get a sort of pizza? I don’t. know the text.

Nestor Aparicio 20:23
I’m just asking. I I would have gotten a Slurpee, but

John Martin 20:26
but he was again disappointed. There was a small display again. This guy’s fixated on size, so he decides to get three of our $20 extreme green scratch offs. Scratches off, ends up that he has won a $1 million, $1 million.

8

Nestor Aparicio 20:49
I definitely would have bought a Slurpee. I would have put the coal and the cherry together. Is what I would have got a large.

John Martin 20:55
So now apparently little packages do pay off in big things.

Nestor Aparicio 21:04
Did he get a pizza?

John Martin 21:06
I don’t. Did he ever get the

Nestor Aparicio 21:07
second pizza?

John Martin 21:08
I I don’t know. You’ll have to ask him.

Nestor Aparicio 21:10
All right, we’ll get him on the show. Million dollars, huh? Running out to 711. I mean, this is why I think you’re in a cool line of work, John Martin. That you know that it’s very rare that we give that, and he has to come claim that dough from you, right? When he wins a million bucks, he got to come see you.

8

John Martin 21:25
Oh yeah, no, he’s got to come here. He’s got he goes through the paces. All right, all right,

Nestor Aparicio 21:29
makes his way through the get smart up the elevator, down the hallway, past the old. Exactly. Son John Martin’s here. He’s seen right. Do we have any other winners? Because that that’s a pretty fun one. I mean, that

John Martin 21:39
that was fun. Another one that’s kind of interesting because again, lottery lottery players are superstitious people. Nestor, I don’t know if you knew that. They have their routines. They do things a certain way. This Glenn Bernie man always would buy tickets in the first part of the book. You know, tickets. Each ticket is numbered. So if there are 100 tickets in the book, ticket one to ticket 100. They have number

Nestor Aparicio 22:01
one right here. There you go. Yeah, good example. Thank you

John Martin 22:04
for all right sharing that with the audience. The the so he always wants to buy them up front because he thinks that that’s where all the prizes are. Well, spoiler alert, that’s not the case. They are random. They are anywhere in that book from one to 100 or whatever the ticket number is. So he was a little disappointed that the tickets were already in the back end of the book, and he said, “All right. Grudgingly, he goes to buy some ticket. I believe it was 48 out of 50, and he didn’t. He didn’t like his odds right there, but he bought it anyway. He bought our lottery King of Diamonds scratch off, which is a $10 ticket, and he ends up winning $100,000 top prize. So clearly, his superstition was proven not to be factual. And be interesting to see if he chooses to play again, and I’m sure he will. If he still adheres to this front of the book process, or now maybe he’s a back of the book kind of guy.

Nestor Aparicio 23:00
You know, I would have taken number 36, right? Because that’s my lucky number.

John Martin 23:03
Well, now if if it was only ticket 34, would you stand in the store and wait for to be? I get some

Nestor Aparicio 23:08
34. Is good. 34 was while Bill Hagee was 34, Storm Davis was 34. There’ve been some good 30. Every number for me equates to like a sports thing, doesn’t it? To you or no? Like maybe it does.

John Martin 23:20
It does, but then when you get you know beyond certain numbers, I I run out of fingers and toes to to calculate. You know what messes me

Nestor Aparicio 23:28
up football season this time of year, and I don’t want to complain too much because I’ll do that with Luke. Is get off my lawn? I should do like an old guy segment as part of my comedy act. When linebackers wear single digits.

John Martin 23:42
Oh, jeez, yeah, yeah. Or

Nestor Aparicio 23:44
cornerbacks, you know what I mean? Like, yeah, yeah. It’s not that I need you to stick to the script, but you’re you’re a big lineman. Wear 5060, or 70 something. You’re a wide receiver. Wear 80 something, or like maybe 1817, 19. But that’s really more for quarterbacks. If you’re a running back, wear something in your 20s or 30s, right?

John Martin 24:05
It, yeah, that’s that’s gone. Those days are gone. Yeah, yeah.

Nestor Aparicio 24:11
Well, this team’s thinking. Holding, excuse me. This team’s thinking. These days are back again. It’s football season. John Martin and I are at it. By the way, I’m having several Cleveland media members on this week. Daryl, right or wrong is going to be coming on this week, as is Munch Bishop. Just because it’s the beginning of football season, and we have a pennant race here. The Baltimore Orioles taking on the Cleveland Guardians early next week. Red Sox in town this weekend. Luke’s at the ballpark. We’re getting ready for football season. We are celebrating 28 years of WNSD with my 28 most influential musical artist and the best storytelling that I could tell here because I’m now in my raconteur phase of nasty nestorness here at WNST. So hope everybody enjoys that. We’re going to be out doing the Maryland crab cake tour presented by our friends at the. Lottery. I will have. By the way, John, who made the decision for the Kiss Face Bird? Because that’s my favorite decision the Maryland Lottery’s made this year. Maybe next to the Pac Man game and the Harlem Globetrotters game. But this is a great. This is a good decision. I love the Kiss

John Martin 25:14
Fair. So you keep talking Kiss Fair. Is that is that just your term, or is that universally known? Yeah, that’s what David

Nestor Aparicio 25:18
Modell called it. So yes.

John Martin 25:19
Oh, okay, okay. Then it was my decision.

Nestor Aparicio 25:23
Can I tell you? Do you have time for one story? Quick story.

John Martin 25:26
It’s your time.

Nestor Aparicio 25:27
the The week that the the logo was decided was back in 1996. I went on vacation that week with my pals to the Caribbean, and it was the week that the Malins happened at the Baltimore Sun because the Baltimore Sun did the poll at the time. It’s 3030 years ago this summer, right? That we not only name the Ravens because David Modell wanted to call them the Mustangs or the Mavericks or the Americans, really the Americans for the trains. He was going to do that. Ravens work because the fans voted for it, like literally. And then the logo happened that week, and I didn’t get involved. David fell in love with the bee that he eventually got sued for, and they went to the side bird. But when all of it happened and they were redoing it, I was on vacation. I was very influential in the Raiders, late ’90s, and they were voting on the side kiss bird, the sort of the sickle bird that happened, or the kiss face bird. I was on vacation that week, and I swear to you, I had David on the air that week. I was absolutely 1,000,000% convinced that this would be the primary logo that I never lobbied. Now there was no internet at the time. It was just my radio show, 1998, 9, 2000, whatever it was that we did all that. After the thing got in dispute in the courts and all that, and I walked away and I came back, and till the day he died, I told David, “You put the wrong logo on the helmet, and so this is this is my favorite logo, and I love it, and I give it away. Is that is that a good story? Good 30/30 anniversary Raven story for you.

John Martin 27:06
Absolutely, absolutely, it’s wonderful story. This is

Nestor Aparicio 27:09
my favorite, and it’s also he had the beady little red eyes. The reason we called it the kiss face, it looks a little like Paul Stanley, a little bit, a little bit. Here’s John Martin. He is a senior advisor who washes his hands of everything that I’ve said now, past, present, or in the future about the kiss face bird? I would say good luck to your baseball team next week, but you and I get together and we’ll we’ll sort things out here to start the season.

John Martin 27:32
We’ll see. We’ll see what happens.

Nestor Aparicio 27:33
Hey, last thing for you. I know you wanted to say it’s September and we got to talk about doing this whole thing responsibly. I want to give you one minute on that for sure.

John Martin 27:40
You talked about 28 years. Ironically, this is the 28th year that our friends at the American Gaming Association, the AGA, right down the road there in DC, have supported Responsible Gaming Education Month in the month of September. Not to be confused with Problem Gambling Awareness Month, which we talk about in the March in the month of March. But you can get more information from the AGA website, from our website. Really, things to emphasize when you’re playing the games, regardless what it is. Make sure you’re in the right state of mind. Stay present. Know what you’re playing. Know your limits. Play with a purpose. Know the game. Understand the rules, the odds, what you’re playing. We talked about X’s and O’s. Understand the game before you start to drop five bucks on a on a on a ticket, and act intentionally. Meaning, set a budget, set a time limit, stay aware, stay in the moment. It’s your money. Don’t be you know off task and and have other influences detract you from that. So if you keep to those three tenets, you’ll do well. And it’s part of our Responsible Gaming Education Month, and we ask everyone to please get educated and play responsibly.

Nestor Aparicio 28:52
So I go to a lot of casinos, John, and every time I pass the backerat or the pag out poker, I don’t know how to play, so I don’t play, and I it’s one of the reasons I don’t play the slots so like pull the arms too much or play the machines because I don’t. It confuses me. There’s just too much going on. I, you know, I’m like I understand blackjack. I played blackjack. I understand football enough to maybe put five bucks on and have a little fun here and again if I were to do such thing. But like games you don’t understand. That’s the first thing I would rules understand rules of engagement, which I wanted to understand your new game with the the NFL X’s and O’s, which I will continue to explain and maybe even play a little bit down at Costas next week. We get together the Maryland Crab Cake Tour is back at Costas in and Dundalk to kick off the season on September 11th. My appreciation to the Maryland Lottery. We will have the Ravens scratch offs to give away and try to get you into second chances and send you off to Charlotte before the end of the month, as well as our friends at GBMC and Farnan and Dermer. John, when we get together next time, it’ll be football season. I am Nestor. We are WNST AM 1570 Towson, Baltimore. We never stop talking. Baltimore positive. Stay with us.

The memorable tales of Kixmas, Child's Play and backstage access at Hammerjacks

Going through all of these memories from four decades ago of rock stars and concerts and the backstage access life gets a little cloudy so our resident rock star John Allen of Stone Horses came back to Pizza John's in Essex. Nestor surprised his lifer pal with a Child's Play blast from the #AlmostFamousNes music critic vault of the music memory bank and the receipts of local rock history. Tales of Kixmas, Russ Mottla and 98 Rock, Chrysalis Records and the hair era of the good old boys in East Baltimore making a mark on the world and the "Rat Race" of getting a video played on MTV.

Who writes the history of 'four score and seven years ago' and two centuries ago in Gettysburg?

We all know the winners write the history and when our pal Bill Cole went to Gettysburg and walked the battlefield, he had more questions than answers. Sometimes it's a field trip and a history lesson about war and peace and country and neighbors that strike up a Maryland Crab Cake Tour stop chat about being certain about the course of humanity and our future.

With Jackson's status in doubt, time for Ravens defense to lead way in Atlanta

Though far from the disaster we watched early last year, the Baltimore defense has been closer to mediocre than great through four games.
