With profound sadness, we mourn the passing of our beloved O.J. Brigance following his extraordinary and heroic battle with ALS. O.J. was a cherished figure, mentor and man whose impact on the Ravens franchise and city of Baltimore spanned two-and-a-half decades.
As a free agent linebacker in 2000, Brigance joined the Ravens and became a special teams standout for Baltimore, recording Super Bowl XXXV’s first tackle on the game’s opening kickoff. Following his seven-year NFL playing career, Brigance transitioned to the front office in 2004 and led the Ravens’ player engagement department for several years.
Following his ALS diagnosis in 2007, he and his wife, Chanda, established the Brigance Brigade Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to raising money and awareness for the fight against ALS. The foundation has worked to improve the quality of life for people living with ALS and their families by providing access to support services, needed equipment and resource guidance. To honor their service to the community, O.J. and Chanda were recently named as Black Marylanders to Watch by The Baltimore Sun.
Brigance was also recognized many times by the NFL, earning the Best Overall Player Development Program Award for two straight years (2005-06) and also receiving the Most Outstanding Internship Program Award in 2005. In 2007, the NFL once again honored his program, this time with the Outstanding Continuing Education Program Award. Brigance has positively influenced thousands of people, both inside the Ravens organization and also within the Baltimore community and beyond.
