BALTIMORE — As the Orioles fade in the midst of their disastrous start to September, the injury bug is picking up again with infielder Blaze Alexander becoming the latest to go on the 10-day injured list.
Alexander exited late in Tuesday’s 9-5 loss due to back spasms, an ailment that will now sideline him for at least half of the 16 remaining games on the schedule entering Wednesday’s series finale against the Guardians. Baltimore recalled infielder Jeremiah Jackson from Triple-A Norfolk to take his place on the active roster.
It’s an unfortunate development for Alexander, who had only returned from a fractured left hand in late August. That July 12 injury cost him nearly seven weeks of what’s been a strong first season with the Orioles in which he’s batted .303 with 19 extra-base hits, 31 RBIs, 10 stolen bases, and a .772 on-base plus slugging percentage in 289 plate appearances.
This past Sunday, Baltimore placed outfielder Luis Robert Jr. on the IL due to a hamstring strain suffered only days after he was claimed off waivers from the New York Mets.
Shortstop Gunnar Henderson (left knee) was also out of Wednesday’s lineup with manager Craig Albernaz describing him as “day to day.” It was set to be only the second game Henderson had missed all season.
