Nestor Aparicio 0:01
Welcome home. We are WNST AM 1570 Towson, Baltimore. We call this thing Baltimore positive. We are celebrating our 28th anniversary on Friday. We’re going to be doing the Maryland Crab Cake Tour. We have a new sponsor, Rosedale Bank. Never to say Rosedale Federal, and I’m going to find that on Friday when we get to Pizza John’s. John Allen, rock star extraordinaire, my pal from Child’s Play and Charm City Devils, and of course Stone Horses will be joining us. It’s all brought to you by our friends at the Maryland Lottery. I have the Ravens kiss face bird. They were number 28. John Merrill will be 27. AC/DC, who I’m still recovering from on Tuesday night in Philadelphia, will be number 26. All of it also brought to you by our friends at GBMC. Got a big segment this week with GBMC as well as Farnan and Dermer. Zach Dermer came out last week at State Fair. We sat underneath of the Joan Jett mural and we talked baseball, which is what I’m going to talk about with this guy as well as all things Maryland Lottery. He is a senior advisor for all things Maryland Lottery. We welcome John Martin, our defending champion, back on. Baseball season’s over in some places, but not. I mean, when you’re a Cleveland Guardian fan, when you’re a New York Yankee fan, a Red Sox, you get to watch baseball this week. But when you’re a Cleveland Guardian fan, you get like you get the week off this week. Tampa Rays. I mean, this is you were worried they weren’t even going to make the playoffs, and they’ve already gone it. And the Orioles season’s over, and we got to do home run riches now. By the way, when they don’t play one extra game, what happens to the extra game when we don’t hit a home run in that game?
John Martin 1:28
Nothing happens to it, and and we we we call that profit. We we move that money over into a another. I
Nestor Aparicio 1:35
hate when you win. I hate when the house wins. You know.
John Martin 1:38
Hey, you know the countdown thing. I apologize. I maybe missed a step here. I don’t have all the full script in front of me. So you’re counting down 28, 27, 26. Is is that what you?
Nestor Aparicio 1:47
Well, it’s our 28th anniversary, and I do 20. You you know this. She sponsors 25 crab cakes, 25 years, 26. We did oyster. 27, I did sort of all my favorite places to eat because I wanted to like go around town and promote local businesses. This year it was sort of like, all right, 28. What am I going to do? And the music things really hit me this year. And with baseball, like maybe taking a little siesta here in the off season, I wanted to do something next year and this year that was like of the people. And every time I put something music up, people maybe you don’t know, but you’ve been. I was a music critic at the Baltimore Sun in the late 80s. Like I hear tell, yeah, like Jimmy Page and Robert Plant and David Bowie and Billy Joel and Bonjour. So, like, I’m just telling those stories. So, all right,
John Martin 2:24
all right. So it’s music focused. I thought. I don’t know if you know
Nestor Aparicio 2:26
the baseball season’s over here. We went through this, right? So I have football, and I’m good with football. But I needed more things other than elections and local. Well, let’s get life is more than crab cakes and oysters, John Martin.
John Martin 2:38
It is. Let’s get right to it. You know what? Let’s let’s let’s put a a bow on it on on all things home run riches and and Pete
Nestor Aparicio 2:47
Alonso cost you a fortune.
John Martin 2:48
He did, he did. the the The lad did well. That was probably a good investment. We’ll see next year, but that was probably a good investment. And overall, we paid out for about 193 home runs. I believe is the final tally. Was that less than
Nestor Aparicio 3:02
last year? Did you pay less money this year? You think probably we
John Martin 3:05
might have. We might have. We might have had more grand slams. They need to move the wall back
Nestor Aparicio 3:08
in. Is what they need to do.
John Martin 3:10
So we had six grand slams, 193 homers, prizes over $217,000. Our current progressive jackpot, though, you can still purchase the. It did roll
Nestor Aparicio 3:22
over. It rolled. Okay.
John Martin 3:23
It is over $80,000, and you can still purchase that fast play ticket, the $5 home run riches walk off winnings, and that will run until this current progressive jackpot is won, and then we will put it on the shelf. We will give it the the winter off, and we will dust it off for spring next year. And who knows, might be some more interesting stuff, like we had the VIP Truist Club this year. What a great time that was! And our last winner was, as we talked before, William Lee Jr. was our last home run. Not the
Nestor Aparicio 3:53
spaceman.
John Martin 3:54
Not no, no, but for Bill Lee, but he did cash in. There was one home run that game. So next thing you
Nestor Aparicio 4:00
know, Ustremsky’s going to win or something like that. You know, a great name. Yeah, well, it’s a great name, right? Yeah,
John Martin 4:06
yeah. Bill Lee, and yes, mr. Lee Jr. won $2,500. So we had a lot of fun with that. And you can go to mdlottery.com and check out video recaps of some of the previous VIP Truist Club winners and great stories. All of them were wonderful stories. A great promotion, fans enjoyed it, especially those who were the VIPs, and we look forward to doing that and more next season. The
Nestor Aparicio 4:29
lady with the Grand Slam and her son in the Truist Club when the Grand Slam happened, she won five Grand Lake on the spot. That’s priceless. We got to get. Hey, by the way, sports is still happening. Just so you know, Luke is out in Owings Mills. We have a football game this week. The Titans are coming to town. They look like the Oilers and all of that. And I know that we’ve moved from baseball to football effortlessly. You know, you mentioned Kiss Face. This is the Kiss Face Bird, number 28 on my countdown. This has been a lucky batch. Now I’m going to be this Friday. We’re going to be doing the show Pizza Johns. We’re going to be at Koco’s. We’re going to be Kostas. We’ll be doing all that. But this is this is the biggest promotion you do every year, and we’re pulling winners. We pulled our Charlotte winners, right? Like this week, they’re going to be pass for cash is going to be happening at the stadium. So we’re right into the throes of of Ravens season.
John Martin 5:12
If people that don’t know what we’re talking about, shame on them. Where have they been for the last several years? We have a wonderful second chance promotion with our five, our sorry, our $10 and our $2 Ravens scratch off tickets, you can go to mdlottery.com and check out the Ravens Second Chance. And there are a variety of options for people to to be selected for winners. There are the yes, we have three people and their guests going to Charlotte, North Carolina, on an away trip with the team, travel with the team. That’s always a fun, a fun promotion. So that’s people looking forward to that. We had our second 20-year ticket finalist, mr. Jerome Nash from Bowie, Maryland. So now we have two of the entrants, and each month we’ll draw another one. In January we’ll draw two
Nestor Aparicio 6:00
tickets for 20 years, right?
John Martin 6:02
20 for wow! Can you imagine that? 20 years. 20
Nestor Aparicio 6:05
years feels like a long time, but then I think like 2006 was five minutes ago to me. I just put my pictures up from the Stones in Rio because we moved to Rio in 2006. It was 20 years ago. Doesn’t feel like that long ago, but I don’t know, man. 20 years-that’s a lot. Let’s see. They’ll have 18 games by then, so you’ll get nine instead of eight. You know, so yeah, I’m just thinking ahead. I’m thinking ahead. That’s all.
John Martin 6:26
But a variety of of of activities we have. You know, one of the fan favorites we have, and it’s based on a lot of what we do with the Home Run Riches, is that our fan of the game. And for those who keeping track, and I do, in the month of September, we had three fans of the game, mr. Joseph Brown won $6,000. You get $1,000 for being selected fan of the game, plus $1,000 for every touchdown from the Ravens. So, mr. I like that. We’re
Nestor Aparicio 6:52
going to score some touchdowns this year. I think. Oh yeah,
John Martin 6:54
and so far we’ve been we’ve been making up for that last that last game that wasn’t played by the O’s. We have mr. Joseph Brown was fan of the game back in September 13th. Won six grand for five touchdowns in that game. Darnell Gross from Capital Heights, Maryland, won $3,000 on September 20th, and just this last weekend, mr. Dennis Pastadan of Nottingham, Maryland, in my backyard, won $5,000 for that that game on the on the 27th, so you you got to enter to win. You got to enter your your non winning scratch off tickets into your My Lottery Rewards account, and you could be one of these lucky winners from anything from 20 years of tickets to fan day experiences, pass for cash, as well as fan of the game, and no longer are you eligible for the Charlotte away trip. Those tickets now have been; those winners have been selected. So no cheesecake for you. Somebody else already won. No cheese. That is right. That is right. But you know, we do a lot more than we’re not just sports here, Nestor. I know you do a lot of things around sports. Well, I’ve reinvented
Nestor Aparicio 8:00
myself. I don’t know if you read Baltimore magazine this summer. So I’m reinvented. I’m Sports Plus is what I am at this point.
John Martin 8:05
Wow, wow! That that there’s a whole segment there that we need to go after. But one of the things that we do oftentimes is promotions with game shows. Game shows very popular with our fan base. Our current game show offering is The Price Is Right, and if you are a lucky enough to enter your non-winning tickets into the My Lotter Rewards account and be selected for a prize package-a beautiful five-day, four-day trip to Los Angeles, California, where you get to attend a taping of the Price Is Right TV game show as an audience member, plus you also get to participate in the game show experience event, where we have winners from all over the country get together to share a potential cash prize up to $10 million, and we had our very first of six winners for that. And our winner is happens to be drum roll, please. Thank you very much, mr. Justin Fish of California, Maryland. I know where
Nestor Aparicio 8:59
California, Maryland is. Don’t start with me. I know where this is. I’ve been where is
John Martin 9:03
it? It’s been. It’s in St. Mary’s
Nestor Aparicio 9:05
County, man. I had a delicious Indian meal there at a joint in California. I I know where California, Maryland is. Yes, that’s correct. It’s it’s yeah. It’s it’s in Southern Maryland, by the way. So what’s this fella’s name? That that that he he’s going to Hollywood. This fella,
John Martin 9:19
Justin Fish, just as the as you would expect fish to be spelled. So, yeah, he is one of the first of our six contestants. Do you think he’s going to get to
Nestor Aparicio 9:31
meet Drew Carey? Like I got a chance to meet Drew Carey. Let’s see, my Drew Carey thing’s special because I met him in this great American town that I know you’re aware of. But they’re not playing baseball just because they’re on bye week? Is this Cleveland? This is Cleveland, Ohio. I don’t remember it. I this was 29 years ago. Just to give you 20 years, that was almost 30 years ago. I still look the same. I don’t know what happened to Drew, but but he will be hosting and coming down for like lots of people in Maryland, right? How many winners do we have in this competition here?
John Martin 9:59
We are. Sending six people and their guests. So there’s only
Nestor Aparicio 10:02
one picked already. So we got five more chances, right?
John Martin 10:04
So each month we’ll have another one. Again, the the the dates, so you can get your entries in in time, are all available at mdlottery.com.
Nestor Aparicio 10:13
Can I tell you something weird? Because we talk about these things. Sure. Can I stop you? No, my my phone listens.
John Martin 10:18
All right.
Nestor Aparicio 10:19
Literally yesterday, someone on my timeline, a friend of mine. I mean, I have a lot of Facebook friends. It’s like not somebody I really know, but somebody that knows me, went to the Price Is Right and and was on like a not a contestant, but they were in the audience and they put their pictures up. So I’m like, I think the algorithm listens. It knows that I’m doing a Price Is Right thing and it knows whatever. But somebody literally was there this week, and the pictures look cool. And I thought I’m going to talk about that with John Martin. John Martin is a senior advisor for all things Maryland Lottery. They have a lot of fun around here, and they provide us with these fantastic Raven scratch-offs we’re going to be doing at the Maryland Crab Cake Tour this Friday in Pizza Johns and Essex. We’ll be back out in Catonsville. I’ll be back in Towson. We’ll be downtown. We’re going to be doing a holiday show at at Fadley’s at Lexington Market in early December, so I’m looking forward to all that. So come and win and be a part of that. So you have other scratch offs now, right? Like some. This is a different season. There was a whole thing last week. I got all into it with Seth about football and baseball and all that. We didn’t promote the new scratch off. So let’s let’s let’s do that.
John Martin 11:19
Yeah, let’s let’s do that. And again, you can get all the details at mdlottery.com and search our scratch off section of the the website. Hello, money.
Nestor Aparicio 11:28
I like that one. I want to buy a Hello Money $5 ticket.
John Martin 11:32
Yeah, yeah. Well, that’s that’s fun. That’s fun. $50,000 top prize. And the in addition to that $5 scratch off game, we have a five-dollar deluxe crossword game. You know, a lot of people enjoy the the leisurely pace of a crossword or a bingo-style game. Always
Nestor Aparicio 11:50
stunk at crosswords, man. I like. I don’t. And I’m a word guy. I mean, I’m really good at Scrabble, but the crossword thing. Those clues. Yeah, I used to play in the TV guy. Just I wasn’t any good at. Do you have? You don’t have to know how to play? You can just scratch, right?
John Martin 12:02
Well, yeah. I mean, you you best basically have a a board in front of you, and depending on the price you pay, you may have multiple boards. But you then scratch and reveal your letters, and then you’re simply matching your letter. If you’ve got an A, an E, you know, you find it in the puzzle and you scratch it off, and then you’re obviously trying to connect as many words as you can. And the more words you you’re able to complete, the higher your cash prize, up to $50,000 top prize on the $5 deluxe crossword. And we have crosswords over multiple price points. So if you like a little more action and a little more gameplay, you may pick out one of the other price points as well. Ross words
Nestor Aparicio 12:43
make me think, and I I do enough thinking. You know what I mean?
John Martin 12:47
Sometimes I try to think, and nothing happens.
Nestor Aparicio 12:49
You know what I think? I think this Powerball X’s and O’s. Then we need to explain it because I’ve tried to do this the last couple of weeks. Because yeah, because I just asked you, do you need to know how to play the game? The Powerball X’s and O’s is interesting because it involves something all of us are familiar with, except you, because you’re a Browns fan. You don’t have a logo, but they’re logos, right? So you know, you
John Martin 13:09
know, mr. mr. Mock, my team. I will just tell you,
Nestor Aparicio 13:13
your team’s two and one. You’re doing good.
John Martin 13:16
I I will just tell you in the X’s and O’s, and I’ll describe it in more detail. But I will just jump to the the end here. Last week there were eight teams drawn, which is the whole idea. You select eight of the 32 logos, and one of the eight selected last week by the magic power of the bee is the Cleveland Browns.
Nestor Aparicio 13:34
Were the Ravens selected?
John Martin 13:35
No, no, I didn’t look Commanders. It was the the Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings, New England Patriots, and Washington Commanders. Oh God, I would never pick the
Nestor Aparicio 13:47
Washington Commander. Like you know what I mean. There’s some of these. It’s just I can’t win if the Steelers are a winner or that you know because I just dislike so many of the NFL teams that aren’t my team. So, but explain how to play this game because people are going to see the logos and they’re going to think I like the Jets to win this week. I like the light. It has nothing to do with the games. I just want to make that clear because sometimes you don’t need to know how to play to win. Really,
John Martin 14:11
exactly. Anyone that’s you you don’t need to know anything about football or who’s playing this week or who’s injured or what the point spread is. Gives me a better chance to
Nestor Aparicio 14:19
win. Right,
John Martin 14:22
right, exactly. I mean, if you if you prefer you know animals as logos or birds or colors or whatever, you know those things might be more appealing to you. But you pick eight of the 32 teams by logo, not by who they’re playing or what their record is. And if you can’t think of eight, if you don’t have eight, if you only have four, pick your four, and the computer will randomly select four others because you need eight to get into the game. And once they’re they’re selected, we draw once a week on Sunday evening, and depending on how many you match of those eight that we select, will determine your price. So if you match all eight and no one did, that would be a million dollar plus top prize. And for next weekend coming up, week four of the NFL season, it will be a $1.2 million jackpot top prize. But if you match seven of eight, you win $20,000. You match six of eight, it’s $500. I lost my track here. Five of eight is whatever it is. So four. Well, you pick one
Nestor Aparicio 15:30
through eight teams is what you do, and the more you pick, the more you can win, right?
John Martin 15:34
Exactly. The more, the more, the the more that one you pick matches what we draw, the the the more you win. And again, like most of the games, you can have some fun with it. If if you don’t understand it, you know, feel free to to ask your retailer, one of the 4,200 plus retailers that sell the game. But again, this one’s a pretty simple simple concept. You match your logos. You check it out. Check out on your app or on mdlottery.com after after Sunday evening, and if you’ve won, congratulations. If you haven’t, hopefully had some fun, and you can try it again next week.
Nestor Aparicio 16:08
You know, it’s part of my shtick to make fun of Cleveland, even though I escaped praise to Drew Carey and you and the Guardians and even the Browns. I’ve been nice to the Browns this week. I I thought their jerseys looked good last week, certainly better than the Bills looked last week. But I got to make fun of the Browns here, just not at your expense, but just I’m looking at this X’s and O’s thing here. There’s 32 teams in national football, like from Arizona to San Francisco alphabetically, and they’re all there. And you know the Cardinals have the little Cardinal like that looks like Calvert Hall. The Falcons have the little Falcon thing from their helmet. The Ravens have the little thing from their helmet. They all have a logo. You know the the even the Colts have like the one they stole from us. Like all of that’s there. Even the Raiders looks the same as it did in L.A. and Oakland and and Oakland the first time. It’s all there. There’s no helmets on this thing other than Clee is just a blank helmet with a little bit of a racing stripe being seen black and white because it’s not black and white. It’s kind of a red print on this. They’re all red logos. It’s the only one that’s using a helmet. It’s the only one that’s doesn’t have a logo. I don’t. Do you know the Browns don’t have a logo? So I. This is what they do when they need to show a logo. They show a plain helmet. Everybody else gets a logo. They look like the Mean Machine, but they’re two and one, and they’re playing well. Let me play him in a couple of weeks. Well,
John Martin 17:21
I don’t know if I’m playing well. They they have they’ve won two of the three games. So well, Todd
Nestor Aparicio 17:26
Monkin’s feisty, you know. So that’s any Browns fan needs a feisty. Like he he’s the right coach for you because he’s feisty for you. You know, he can lose lose feisty.
John Martin 17:36
He has already dropped more than a few. I know, I know. My friends are at those press conferences. Absolutely, John Martin is here. He doesn’t drop those terms because he’s a senior advisor of all things Maryland lottery and gaming. And so jackpots are getting big, right? We got Mega Millions over three. Powerball’s getting up almost a half a billion. We haven’t talked about that in a little bit, but I’ll give you a little oxygen. Yeah, and the Powerball games, the X’s and O’s is part of the Powerball game, right? Is sort of kind of family, family, family, family games. But yes, and thanks for putting the curse on the two big jackpots. Very much, thank you. But as we speak, Powerball over $400 million, and Mega Millions over $320 million. So stay tuned. Follow your app. Follow MDLottery.com, especially on drawing days to see if there’s any change to those jackpots. Multi match was hit recently. It is now up to $530,000. And as I said earlier, X’s and O’s. If you match eight of eight, $1.2 million. And yeah, we hopefully have some fun. We’re coming up against some some huge numbers last year with Powerball, and and those of us in the industry like to try to do better than we did last year. But we’ll we’ll see what happens with with the next several weeks, and hopefully, who knows? It’s only the beginning of of October, but maybe we’ll have another nice long deep run into the billion dollar field come the holidays. Wouldn’t that be nice? My
Nestor Aparicio 19:00
wife will be buying any any moment now. John Martin is here. Last thing for you, it’s still September as we tape this. By the time people hear, it’ll be October. Tennessee’s in town this week. We’re a couple three weeks into the NFL season. If you’re a listener out there, I don’t know if your little account is up or down, but take a look at how much you’re wagering and figure out that like it’s a new season and all that, and this is where we have some cautionary tales for one 800 gambler because this is the time of year people get a little stuck if they start falling behind, they’re not winning, they don’t know as much about football as I think I know. But you guys always get out in front of this because it is important, and it is. I mean, I remember so far back four or five years ago, when you couldn’t do this on your phone, now that you can, we want to make sure we have those guardrails up for everyone.
John Martin 19:46
You know, there are certain times of the year, and this is one of them, when there’s just a an influx of activity, and you always want to make sure that that you understand the game that’s being played. Ideally, you have a budget, you stick with it, whether it’s a time limit or. Dollar limit that you you manage your your time and your your spend accordingly. You know you’ve got the World Series is is around the corner and all the playoffs between now and then. You’ve got college football and professional football.
Nestor Aparicio 20:14
Four baseball games a day every day this week, right? Yeah,
John Martin 20:16
yeah, exactly, exactly. And then certainly the startup very very soon in the in the next several weeks with both hockey and basketball. So a lot of different sports activities, and you know it’s it’s okay to enjoy it as a fan to to maybe put a couple bucks on it for entertainment value. But please be careful, have a plan, stick with it, know the odds of the games that you’re playing, and ideally enjoy it with some friends, and you can kind of help each other keep some guardrails up so that everybody has a good time. And please play responsibly.
Nestor Aparicio 20:48
All right, there he is, John Martin. He’s senior advisor for all things Maryland Lottery. He’s having a better week than us. His football team is, you know, Cleveland and Baltimore get together in a couple weeks, so we’re going to figure all this out. We’re going to figure out the Titans this week. In the meantime, we are watching baseball. Luke is in Owings Mills. He will be joining me next week. We’re doing the Maryland Crab Cake Tour on Friday at Pizza Johns in Essex. French fries and gravy for me, just to upset my family practitioner at GBM’s. I haven’t had a French fry in like four months, and I certainly well, I did have a little bit of gravy on a sandwich a couple weeks ago, but French fries and gravy straight ahead at Pete’s Johns Wall Friday. It’s all brought to you by friends at the Maryland Lottery. I have the Ravens kiss face bird. We are celebrating 28 years here on the radio at WNSD, and I’m rocking and rolling and talking about John Mayer. And I saw AC/DC just so I could get a frame on like where they are right now, and they’re still unbelievably awesome. So that was great. So the rock and roll stuff’s been fun. Sports has been fun. Baseball, well, it’s fun if your team’s playing or if you love baseball. So we’ll be watching baseball this week. I also fired off a letter to Michaelias that you’ll want to check out this week. I am Nestor. We are WNST. AM 1570 Towson, Baltimore. We never stop talking. Baltimore positive. Stay with us.
