Energy over the weekend. You were at the scrimmage. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, TikTok, TikTok. I’m doing music this week. If you haven’t heard, this is our 28th anniversary because, like, this staying up late with the Orioles in Sacramento and Denver and their two back and their four back and they’re two under and they’re three under. Like all of that. Dare I say, and I’ve never said this before. You know I’ve never. Just get me to Indianapolis already, right? Yeah, I think it’s time, right? We’ve gotten to that point, even for those of us that are following training camp closely, and and fans out there who love to see the entire roster and and actually enjoy the preseason games and all of that. I think everyone you get to the point where it’s the last few days of August. You know your final cuts are are imminent, and you know you still have a little bit of the hurry up and wait. They’ll get some work in next week. They’ll get a respite next weekend, and then after that they come back at Labor Day, and it’s game week, right? And before you know it, we’re talking about week one and going out to Indianapolis and all of that. But you get to this point, yeah, it’s time. Yeah, there could be a roster spot or two still up for grabs. I’m watching the fifth outside linebacker spot. I’m I’m still watching the center competition. I mean, some fans will be clamoring for them to keep Joe Fignano, the the undrafted rookie quarterback, who’s looked pretty good this summer. But by and large, it’s time, right? They got their last meaningful work against an opponent on Wednesday for the joint practice against Washington. They got out of that without any major injuries or anything like that, so that was good. Lamar Jackson expressed optimism. Jesse Minter expressed optimism, but we’re at the point now where it’s time set the 53-man roster and let’s start talking about and get ready for games that matter. So, and that’s fine. for an interesting two weeks, the setup of this week, the couple of days off, you know, the the reset of the calendar for all of the veteran guys who are walking around with their gold chains on in the game on Friday night and waving to everybody and playing hide and seek with the cameras and all the for nobody that’s there at a 6o’clock game on a Friday night, weird, right? Yeah, total weird. Well, they’re they’re trying to. Everybody’s going to go to the talent afterward and drink $28 martinis. So, but it is a little bit of a clock reset, especially for all the guys that I have questioned and put under the microscope: the Humphries, the Stanleys, the Roquans, the Ron, the the the Derek County, the veterans, the veteran guys that they didn’t need much of this. They got some of this. They got installed. To your point, I don’t care who you are. New coaches, new system, new everything. Even you know Kyle Hamilton’s had a lot to learn here, in addition to Lamar Jackson. So this has been a

whole lot of school here the last three four months that it wasn’t necessarily there for some of the veterans the last couple of years. Yeah, no doubt about it. I mean, obviously, I mean you’re talking about a a head coach who was entrenched had been there way longer than any player, and now you have a situation where you have a first year head coach and guys that have been here a really long time, and it’s it’s really easy to love everything about it in the spring and the summer. But now we’re approaching the time where hey, Jesse Minter is going to have start having wins or losses to his ledger, right? I mean that’s it’s the way this works. Declan Doyle hasn’t called a bad play yet, right? You know, although certainly was was a little choppy in Minnesota in that first half. But point is, hasn’t called a play that counts yet. So, but but I think that that’s fine. I mean, you know, there’s an ebb and flow to the summer. You know, you go through the off season program, you go through OTAs, you mini camp web. The whistle, albeit very briefly, and then guys come back and everyone gets settled in. And to your point, there’s been a lot of learning, especially with the offense, right? I mean, at least with the Jesse Minter defense, you know, the threads are still very similar because I mean, Minter was here at the same time as Mike McDonald when they were revamping what had been the Ravens’ defense prior to that? You know, when Wink Martindale took over for Dean Pease. So, so I I wouldn’t say the defense is in completely different. It will be elements of it are different. It’s obviously a different individual running that. I I think the Ravens, with no disrespect to Zach Orr, I think the Ravens very much feel Jesse Minter’s a a substantial upgrade in terms of him calling that, and you throw Anthony Weaver in there in terms of them, you know that partnership side by side, but you know with the offense we we’ve talked about this. I mean, especially with questions about the offensive line, the idea that this is an offense that really does not have much carryover or all that many similarities to what Lamar Jackson’s run in the past, right? I mean, they’re going to be under center a heck of a lot more than they’ve ever been with Lamar Jackson. Which I’m not saying that’s. I I think that can be a very good thing, but it is different, and there is some adjustment, and that’s where why for me, especially considering the minter factor, I kind of expect the defense, and that’s been the case throughout the summer. I expect the defense to be more consistent and probably better overall than the offense at the very beginning. Now that said, that doesn’t mean I think the offense is going to stink. I think it it could it just lends itself to the idea that it might not be quite as consistent early on, and we’ve talked about it. The schedule is very forgiving. Even if that happens, I think this team can still win a lot of football games early on, even if their offense isn’t perfect or you know in those first few games of the season. But you’re building, and it’s easy to build and install and running plays and even doing these joint practices, right? I mean, I I thought the the meeting with Washington on Wednesday that it was a decent day for the offense. I focused more so on that field, Ravens offense against Washington defense. You know, it wasn’t perfect, but I thought it was a good day. And certainly, by all accounts of anyone that had been in Minnesota the week before, the offense fared way better than it did against the Vikings in those practices, so that was good to see. And by all accounts, the Ravens’ defense handled the Washington offense, so it was a good day. But it’s practice, right? And we’re at the point now where I think everyone’s ready.

They’ll probably rest a few more guys even on Friday night. Like, for example, I could see them. I wouldn’t be surprised if Vengoyuane doesn’t even play. I mean, I, I would kind of right, exactly. Every starter and every established, notable backup or rotation player, I could kind of see them sitting out. I mean, you, you can’t rest everybody that’s going to be on your 53 man roster, but I don’t think you’re going to see a ton of run for anyone of even semi consequence, so that’s fine. It gives you a chance to evaluate an Ethan Burke. It gives you a chance to evaluate someone like Adisa Isaac. You know whether they’re they’re going to consider him a sunk cost or get see if he can develop this year after missing his first couple years. I mean, center is still, you know, I it’s still up for grabs according to Jesse Minter. Although I’ll say this, Nestor, I mean, you heard me talking about this in terms of before Danny Pinter got hurt. For all the talk that that Minter has laid out there about wanting to get first team reps for Ethan Posick, still haven’t seen evidence that that he’s run with the ones in anything that’s been open to media or fans. So I still wonder, and I said this about Pinter, and maybe it’s maybe it will apply to Javon Gwynn too, who’s had a nice summer. But I do wonder if Posik the the plan is for him to continue to work his way back, and he’ll be the backup center for the first month, and maybe they reevaluate that, or maybe Jovan Gwynn, who has been with Dwayne Ledford now for this is his fourth year. He followed him from Atlanta to Baltimore, and Dwayne Ledford clearly liked him and said, “Hey, let’s sign this guy from Atlanta. He’s never played, but this kid’s gotten better. If we need a center, he might be an interesting guy to to throw into the mix. Maybe they love him that much because unless they’re being really really coy, and I don’t really understand why. Like I don’t think any I don’t think there’s any team out there that would be gaining an advantage for you to be sandbagging a. Ethan Posick to the point where he’s not getting any first team reps, only to have him start Week One. That’s where I look at this thing, and I’m you’re starting

Became a at least fringe caliber Pro Bowl caliber center and ended up getting champion and get got a big contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Right, Matt Scura, practice squad guy, became a starter a couple years later. Maybe Javon Gwynn is going to be that guy. Maybe Dwayne Dwayne Letford identified a diamond in the rough and said, “Hey, come to Baltimore with me. They have they need a center. Like you’re you’re gonna have a chance to play, or that could be the the case for a week or two, and he struggles, and then Posick’s in there, right? But I don’t know at this point in time, and I’d never, I wouldn’t have said this in July. When they signed Posick, we said, “Okay, that’s the starting center. But I mean, at some point in time, you need to see him snapping to Lamar Jackson or run into one

This is not what I think or what I’ve been told, is he better than Posick, who’s 31 years old at 85 percent? He might be right, and and and to be clear, that could also just be they continue to have a problem at center, or maybe he’s a diamond in the rough, or Posik’s going to come back by week three, and maybe at that point he’s practicing so well, and Gwyn’s kind of looking iffy the first couple weeks, and maybe he’s the starting center then. I don’t know, but I just again for me to to think that Hosik’s going to be the week one guy, it feels like they’re being very very coy for a reason I really couldn’t even explain. If the idea is to build cohesiveness and chemistry with your starting five on the offensive line. So we’ll see. I mean, maybe we’ll get a glimpse. I mean, maybe Posik runs. You know, goes up, and and it’s tough to even say go goes with the starters for the preseason finale because you’re not playing most of the starters, right? And and I would assume Washington’s not going to play most of their starters, so it’s it’s just that’s been something that’s just been really surprising to me because I thought you know week first couple weeks okay you know Posix learning the the system he wasn’t here in the spring wasn’t here at mandatory minicamp so late july 1 week of august 1 10 days of August let’s say I’ll buy that he was only running third team at that point in time, but we just haven’t seen evidence that this is even a real genuine competition where they’re alternating series or alternating 11 on 11 periods or anything like that. It’s it was all Pinter, and it’s kind of all been Gwyn since Pinter’s injury even, and we saw that even in Minnesota with the preseason game, right? I mean, Gwyn started, you know, Posick came in, you know, late in the first half, but was not like an alternating thing where, like, oh, okay, these are the two guys duking it out for the starting job. So that’s just something that’s been surprising to me. But we know that he had an Achilles injury in December, and we talk about it all the time. You’ve heard me say this so many times over the years. There’s healthy enough to be cleared to play, and like, okay, you’re off pup. You know, you can play. You’re not going to be on IR, but that’s not the same thing as necessarily being pre-injury form. So, you know, I suspect without the Ravens coming out and saying it, but just seeing how they’ve managed this situation, I suspect that Posik’s someone that they’re kind of looking at to say, okay, you know, for now you’re going to be the backup, and maybe by october 1, you know, like first week, first week of October, maybe that’s when you’re going to be ready, or we’re going to give Javon Gwin a shot, and this guy’s going to play in the NFL. Really play for the first time. I mean, he has 11 career snaps under his belt. If he gets completely annihilated the first week or two, then Posik will be in at that point, even if he’s at 85 percent, right? So, so I that’s kind of my read. Or his

I will say this: going back and watching, not as much in the Minnesota game, but especially the Philadelphia game, where he got very extensive run. Pinter played the first couple series, and then Gwynn played from what late in the first quarter into the fourth quarter. He played really well, and I get it. It’s against backups, I all that, right? I mean, we know that. I mean, it’s preseason, but just based on what we saw, I mean, it looked looked pretty good. So we’re gonna see. Or again, the really pessimistic way of looking at this is, are they really concerned that Posick might just be kind of sort of done after getting him in their building and getting him on the field, whether it’s about the injury or not? I mean, it’s not as though he was playing like an All Pro center last year anyway, and Gwynn might be the best of what they have, and maybe Eric DeCosta is going to be working the phones over the next few weeks. I don’t know. Again, it’s a lot of uncertainty, and it’s just one of another one of the reasons why, at least early on, I’m not expecting this offense to go nuts. I mean, I’m not expecting them to to be hanging 40 burgers on the first few weeks of the season, nor should they really need to do that to win. If this Jesse Minter defense is as good as I do think it’s going to be, but I’ll go back to one of your big talking points that you mentioned a few minutes ago, and you’ve talked about it all off season. Yeah, it it’s time for Roquan Smith and Marlin Humphrey and and these veteran players on both sides of the ball that are either coming off of a not so great season or are just another year older, like a Ronnie Stanley, for example. And you just say, “Hey, are you guys going to go out there and you’re making a lot of money? Are you going to play like that? Because if not, if you have enough of those guys that don’t do that, yeah, that’s when this team might struggle a little bit more in certain areas than we’re anticipating right now.

I mean, from that that’s kind of what I’ve seen with the center. I mean, no no in indication of any rotating anything like that. I thought the offensive line pass protection was shaky at times. I do think the run blocking looked pretty good. I mean, I it’s tough to gage because it’s thud, right? And especially with someone like Derrick Henry, right? And they’re not finishing. Someone plays. Someone goes to wrap up Derrick Henry. That does not mean it’s a tackle in real time when you’re playing real football. So, but it looked like they, you know, they were opening some decent running lanes and all that. So I thought overall the offense looked pretty good. I thought, I mean, the play of the day to me was Lamar made a great, you know, was a dig route to Devonte’s Walker about 25 yards downfield. Great layered throw over the linebackers, but in front of the defensive backs to the point where Devonte’s Walker takes off and ran for a touchdown. I mean, it’s a really nice play. But to to sit here and and and say that I had any dramatic takeaways, not not so much. I mean, I’ll throw this out there. Tyler Loop went five of seven. Now one one miss was from 60. The other was was was from I think 43 off the top of my head. I mean, it was one that he needed to make. But that said, I mean, we’ve talked about that, right? I mean, is he going. Make him in the games, right? He can go perfect in practice, and

I will continue to say that I would have brought in competition for him, even if it was a case of you bring in someone that you think is lesser from a talent standpoint, and you almost rig it, I just wanted I would have done that to see how he handled that psychologically. By the way, let me give you a cheap shot because it’s preseason, and I want to give this to you. Any thought that Justin Tucker wasn’t going to work in this league again while Deshaun Watson’s the starting quarterback at Cleveland, I just want to interject that in on you over the weekend. So Tucker, you know the phone hasn’t rang and Deshaun Watson’s playing football, so I like making a lot of money and starting against everyone’s will in Cleveland. So I don’t say they could have brought Tucker in or whatever, but it is interesting he didn’t get a call

I’m just very surprised that they never brought in any competition because I wanted to see what it looked like. And any notion, if there if if there’s any notion in their minds of saying, “Well, we don’t want to, we don’t want to ruin the kid’s confidence, like then he’s not the guy. Then you know what I mean? Like that to me reeks of, well, we can’t bring this prospect up in baseball because if he struggles early on, we’ll ruin him. I can promise you, Justin Tucker had a lot of problems. Confidence wasn’t one of them, right? So bring anybody you want, and I’ll I’ll kick him. Exactly. So so we’re gonna see. Maybe it works out fine. I’m not burying this kid, and and I will continue to compliment him on the heels a year after Mark Andrews was nowhere to be found after his failures in Buffalo. really disagree with you. That said, that is an Indianapolis team. Before Daniel Jones got hurt, I mean, they got off to a good start last year. I mean, believe me. Spoiler alert right now. I’m picking the Ravens to win week one. Let’s be very clear about that. However, I don’t think it’s going to be so lopsided where you’re just like rolling the ball out there and and they’re going to win by four touchdowns, right? You got to go out and play well. I mean that’s that’s a team that still does have some talent. I mean they’ve got a a heck of a running back. They just got their number one receiver Pierce back. You know he looks like he’s going to be ready. That they’ve got a. Good tight, a good tight end. You know what’s Daniel Jones going to look like coming back from the Achilles and all that? We’ll see. I mean, it seems like he’s healthy, right? So yes, they should win. But you’re on the road, first-time head coach, first-time play calling offensive coordinator. Are all you’re going to be on all your Ps and Qs in terms of game management, clock management, all those different things? We’ll see. But I’m with you. Yeah, this is a team that if if they’re not two and zero, come what four 430 on september 20. Not that anyone should be like, oh, the season’s over or anything like that, but there’ll definitely be some disappointment. There’s no question about that. This sets up for them to get off to a two and O start, and then to your point, make the long trip down to South America and see how they fare against the Cowboys.

He’s actually going to Brazil, so I know some folks here, Ravens fans, are going down to Brazil for the week in a month now. So paid their $81 for their visa and got that thing going. Luke is around.
