The preseason nonsense has ended. “Final” cuts have been made. And the 53 current Baltimore Ravens have been selected. Now, it’s time to get ready for the Indianapolis Colts and get a real in-season clock working in Owings Mills. Luke Jones and Nestor discuss the Ravens week ahead in preparation for a Super Bowl-run that will begin with many questions left to be answered on the field in the friendly heart of the Midwest.

The discussion centered on the Ravens’ initial 53-man roster and what it means for Week 1 against Indianapolis.

Roster Decisions

• Luke said the biggest call was keeping Namdi and Teddy Buchanan on the initial 53 instead of placing them on IR immediately, so both can keep practicing and be evaluated for an earlier return.

Yeah, I mean, I don’t. First and foremost, I don’t think it was a the most dramatic, interesting final 53, or I guess I should say initial 53, right? Because we know it’ll start changing immediately. Starting with, do you try to claim some players who are waived elsewhere, right? I mean, we see that some sometimes some of the worst stories tend to be the guy that thinks he made the team, but then he’s the guy that goes because they claim some other team’s linebacker or something like that. You know what I mean? So, so there is a. There’s no such thing

No, I mean they’re final for the best players, and that’s about it. And even those guys, it’s not forever, right? So, but but I think when you look at it, I mean, to me, the headline that, and we’ll get to Joe Fignano here in a few moments, but so many questions about Namdi Matabike, and they’re still there, right? We don’t know if he’s going to play Week One. We don’t know if he’s going to play Week Two. We we don’t know any of that. All we know right now is he’s on the initial 53 man roster. Now I’ll point out if they had elected to place him on IR and use one of their designations to return, because you can do that with two players right off the bat from Final Cuts. You can do that. They don’t have to be on the 53-man roster. You don’t have to cut someone else and have them on for a day, because that used to be the case with how they did it. But I would point out. So, so here’s where I was skeptical that they were going to put him on IR right now. If you do that, it takes them out of play for practice for this week, for next week, for the first couple weeks of the season. I think you’re allowed to start practicing after two weeks. You know, two after two games missed with the the IR rules, which change just about every year. I mean, they’ve changed so many times over the last, you know, 1314, years that they’ve done this designation to return thing, going back to Ray Lewis, right? It was a way different animal way back then when he did it. Deer antler

yeah, yeah. But, but, but I think what you need to keep in mind here is, you want him to keep practicing, right? You want him to keep ramping up. You want him to start hitting. You want him to, you know, he started hitting the sled last week. Do I think it’s not looking overly promising for him to be ready for week one? You know, I it’d be tough for me to argue against that, right? I mean, I it feels like might not be week one, might not be week two, but if you put him on IR, then he’s out until week five at a minimum. So this allows him to practice. And the other thing I’d point out, and this also applies for Teddy Buchanan, who’s still ramping up as well, who has had an incredible rehab. I mean, he tore his ACL in mid-December, and the fact that he came off PUB before the end of training camp is a testament to him and and the rehab he’s done, but you can still take this all the way out to september 12 hypothetically, and then decide okay, we’ve given Namdi two more weeks. He’s still not terribly close to to being ready. We’d really like the roster spot for player A or player B, whatever, they could hypothetically put him on IR right there, and be no worse for wear than they would have been had they done it on Sunday. So I’ll just, I’m not saying that’s going to happen. In fact, I would guess that’s probably not the way this is going to go. But I do want to point that out from a from a clerical standpoint. They can be no worse for wear by. Placing him on IR 12 days from now, you know, on the eve of the Colts game, and he he still would be in a position where he missed four games, right? I mean, like it’s no different, except now by not doing it for final cutdown day, he can practice this week, he can practice next week. You have basically two more weeks to evaluate. Okay, how close are you? Is this going to be a week two thing, a week three thing, or is this still maybe looking like week five or six? And then, if it’s week five or week six, then you put them on IR because you know then then you can have another player on your roster. But and and keep in mind, you always have players that you deactivate on game day anyway. So you know, I my my gut would tell me at this point he’s probably going to stay off of IR, and they’re just going to go the route of if he is inactive week one, so be it. If he’s inactive week two, so be it. And you know, if if the thought is, hey, we think he could be ready by week three or week four, then yeah, you don’t want to waste a couple games on IR. Then they’ve got a pretty healthy roster overall right now, so so so that’s kind of where you’re going with that. But I just wanted to point that out because a lot of people said, well, he’s you know he’s not going to be on IR. They technically could still do it, but at this point, you know you you want them to practice, right? You want them to ramp up. You want to see what this looks like. You don’t want to just put him on IR. You got to shut them down for the next month, so you’d rather not do that. So, so that was kind of the big takeaway with Madabike and Teddy Buchanan being on the 53-man roster. The other takeaway, and we’ve talked about this on an annual basis, 22 of the last 23 years, the Ravens have kept at least one undrafted free agent on the 53-man roster, and it’s two, right? So, so, so I I thought that was interesting, but to me, it it kind of just illustrated that they’re not very high on a decent Isaac, right? I mean, if it’s a sunk cost, it’s a sunk cost. You chalk it up to being a bad draft pick, and he got hurt, and you, you know, there’ll always be a little bit unknown there. And Sergio

David Ajavo, you know, go through the list, right? I mean that that it happens. You know, you don’t want it to happen a lot, but it happens. So so so you know, we’ll see about Ethan Burke. I think primarily you see him on special teams for now. You know, I’m not not necessarily thinking he’s going to be a major part of the rotation early on in the season at outside linebacker, but you know Joe Fignana was a good story. I mean I talked talked about this in passing leading into the preseason finale, but keep in mind this was a guy that they initially were bringing him into rookie camp as a tryout, along with Diego Pavia, who was a what Heisman runner-up. He went undrafted. Yeah, there was a little bit of back and forth there with those guys being tryouts, or whether they were going to be signed to the roster, whatever. They end up signing both of them. They cut Pavia after the spring, and Joe Fignano, I mean, he had a nice college career. Go go look at his numbers at UConn last year. I mean, did a nice, really nice job. But as is typically the case, you know, measurables and and all the questions, you know, level of competition, all those questions that lead to someone, you know, whether they’re being drafted late or going undrafted. So, but point is, first couple weeks of training camp, he was barely even getting any reps. I mean, they still had Skylar Thompson healthy at that point in time. So you know, Lamar’s getting the reps with the ones. Tyler Huntley’s getting the reps with the twos, and third team, which doesn’t get as many reps anyway, but on top of that, Skylar Thompson was getting the third team reps. So Joe Fignano was going through practices and at times not getting any 11 on 11 work. Well, Skyler Thompson gets hurt. He lands on IR. Fignano practices just a couple days where okay, you’re the number three guy for right now, and goes out there in the preseason opener and does enough to. Garner attention, and then played not unbelievable football in Minnesota, but relative to how the other quarterbacks played, played pretty well. You know, representative effort in Minnesota, and then he played really well against Washington on Friday night. I mean, this kid led the NFL preseason in passing yards. Let me be clear: it’s the preseason, and you’re going up against backups in third string, but like that’s that was saying something. So I still had skepticism that they would keep him on the roster because again, when you have a quarterback like Lamar Jackson, and when you have a veteran backup like Tyler Huntley, who I know Tyler Huntley has his warts, but this guy’s proven multiple times that he can go out there, muddy up a game, and help you win a game or two if your starting quarterback’s going to be out a few weeks, right? We’ve we’ve seen it. I mean, Tyler Huntley saved helped save their season a couple times last year. You know, it was a collective effort, but we’ve seen him do that. So, point is, you have a pretty decent backup, so I was skeptical in the idea of one they would carry a third quarterback. I was, and I’m still skeptical that he, you know, I’m, I’m still not convinced he was going to be claimed off waivers. I mean, we’ll never know now. I suppose there could be some reporting out there that says Team X was going to take, you know, John Harbaugh and the Giants were going to claim him off waivers or or whatever, or Todd Monkin or or whatever team you want to kind of imagine any team that needs a quarterback, but but he did a nice job and I think you know I some I’m sure there’ll be some people that will try to read way too much into this, but I think you like him enough that hey he had a nice preseason he seems coachable. He seems like a likable kid. You know, his his quote on Friday night was so mature. I mean, and he’s an older rookie. He’s 25. You know, he’s not he’s he’s not really the typical rookie quarterback prospect that’s 21 years old, right?

And that’s why you know the the ceiling for him is maybe he becomes a a good backup in the NFL, right? I mean, I would think, right? I I don’t think he’s going to be the next Tom Brady, is my point. But you know, he has just has a good head on his shoulders, and he was asked about his chances on the roster on Friday night. He said, “Look, I could put my head on the pillow and sleep well, knowing that I did everything I could with my opportunity. That just that was impressive. Like he came across as someone and say, “Yeah, I’d like to root for that guy. So, if he develops into a long-term backup, that you know, a year from now they can move on from Tyler Huntley and he’s their backup. And you know what I saw

Really, think about it. You just said it with 11 slappies. He’s perceived to be a slappy until he’s not. You know what I mean? Like that. That’s that’s the point. So he did a nice job, and clearly they saw something to say: One, we’re not confident that we’re going to get him through the practice or get him through waivers and onto the practice squad. And two, you know, this guy showed a lot of growth with just getting reps. Like we weren’t even giving this guy practice reps, and suddenly he’s the third string guy, and and he’s throwing touchdowns and and making nice throws to Jacoby Lane and and Tez Walker. I mean, like real NFL receivers, and doing a nice job. And I mean, it was a good story, right? And we’ll see we’ll see what comes of it. I mean, for all we know, he could be cut in three weeks, right? But we also, for all we know, he could be their he could be their backup next year, right? I mean, they could say, “Hey, we love Figniano. We think in this system we have now he’s a perfectly good backup to Lamar Jackson. We can save a little bit of money here and move on from Tyler Huntley, right? I mean, like it’s not it’s not that deep, but it’s it’s a cool story, right? Anytime one of these undrafted rookies make it, I mean, it’s it’s a really cool story, and it’s a testament to this organization with the scouting process. I mean, they cut two of their seventh round picks. They kept two undrafted rookies, right? I mean, it speaks to not, and I’m not saying that to bash their seventh round picks, but it speaks to the the their ability to cast a wide net to bring in undrafted talent, and when you have two decades plus of a reputation of being a good landing spot for undrafted rookies to develop and have a chance to make the 53-man roster, I mean it-it just it speaks to a good scouting process. I mean it does. So you know we’ll see. I mean that’s. And Ethan Brooks going to become a starting player. Not going to say Joe Fignano is going to replace Lamar Jackson in three years or anything crazy like that. But it’s a good story, and you know there weren’t a ton of, there wasn’t a ton of drama with their other moves, right? I mean, you know they they traded C.J. Acoya to John Harbaugh and the Giants. You know they got a 2028 late round pick there. I mean that’s that’s basically a signal that you were going to cut them and the Giants threw you a bone to to get to the front of the waiver wire line, right? I mean that’s that’s what a trade like that really is. But you know there was that they you know they cut Robert Longerbeam their six round pick from last year, who missed all of last year with a knee injury. I’m guessing there’s a decent chance they get him on the practice squad. So this wasn’t a there. There weren’t any handshake agreements. Like I thought maybe John Jenkins would be someone. Maybe they’d cut him and bring him back later in the week, and maybe or maybe he’d be on the practice squad, and you’d kind of do that. You know, it was it was fairly cut and dried, other than you know your two undrafted rookies. But it’s the Ravens. 22 of 23 years, they’ve kept at least one. So you know, you’re every year when I’m going through my roster projection, I’m looking at it and saying, okay, who is who is the undrafted candidate or two that has a shot to make the roster?

You know, Burke was someone that, as of a couple weeks ago, I started looking at you know Dominic DeLuca, who I think will probably be on their practice squad as an inside linebacker that will probably help them on special teams at some point. But you know Joe Fignano just kept putting up good numbers and good tape, and we know that this is a league that is desperate for good quarterback play. Again, I’m not saying he definitely would have been claimed, but Eric DeCosta looked at it and said, you know, if there’s X percent chance of him being claimed, and we want to keep him, we better keep him

Yeah, I’m. I’m glad. I’m glad you brought up the center, though. I mean, I said this to you last week. All signs continue to point to Jovan Gwyn being the starting center. I mean, he started the preseason game. He he left after two series. Now Posick got a lot of run, but he got run against you know the third string guys. So I think Gwynn’s going to be the starting center. Now that does not mean I’m necessarily going to assume he’s going to be the the center from week one through week 18, because we’ve talked about it with Posick with the Achilles and working his way back, and we’re going to have to see. I mean, Javon Gwynn has what 11 career snaps under his belt. We really don’t know if he can play or not. He had a nice summer. Clearly, he had a nice enough summer to earn it, even after Pinter’s injury. But I mean, unless, as I said to you, unless they’re being over the top coy for some reason, I wouldn’t even be able to explain. All signs point to him being the starting center and and Posick being the the backup at least for week one, you know. And we’ll we’ll if it goes horribly, then I’m guessing Posick will be in there week two, right, or week three, or whatever it is. But, but I think that’s what we’re going to see. I mean, we’re we’re now into regular season mode, so we’re only going to be able to watch the first 30 minutes of practice, you know, enough to take attendance. But that’s that’s kind of my expectation now. You know, I think, I I do think just a couple takeaways in terms of what they did Friday night. It was interesting. Jacoby Lane did not play in the preseason finale. I think that’s a clear cut sign that he won the number three wide receiver job over Tez Walker. I mean, I think he’s the you’re going to see him on the field. He’s going to play. He’s going to get every opportunity, at least the opportunities of a number three wide receiver, which in this system I think is going to be a little more prominent than it was under Munkin. NFL. I’m glad you brought that up because the NFL. We saw this with Josh Jacobs. We saw this with what the the edge guy in Denver, who off the top of my head, his name is escaping me, but we saw that the commissioner was exempt list. Those individuals were put on that list, which is basically suspension with pay, and and you’re not allowed to play. I mean, it’s that simple. Jonathan Cooper was the other one, so my my apologies on that. Bateman, and along with a couple others who’ve had Puka Nakula being one of them, the the NFL continues to investigate that. You know, it’s an ongoing legal situation. The NFL could potentially, conceivably, at any point because we’ve seen suspensions even before a legal situation plays out. If they’re if the NFL deems there’s enough evidence there to to say hey this this warrants discipline regardless of what the legal system system ultimately rules so I you know he’s on the roster for now the assumption is he’ll begin the season and play for now but could there be a suspension at some point in time, yeah, sure. So that’s where it’s even from a football standpoint to not, you know, not to not to belittle the real life issue at work there. You know, that’s why it’s important for a Jacoby Lane to emerge, right? For these young tight ends to emerge, to to make sure that they’re covered, right? It can’t just be Zay Flowers and Mark Andrews, and that’s it, right? They need other guys to emerge because you don’t know if you’re going to have Rashad Bateman for 17 games, right? And frankly, Rashad Bateman’s been an inconsistent player anyway, so you want more you want more guys to step forward. So, but that’s that’s the update for now, right? I mean that he’s not on the commissioner exempt list at at this point in time doesn’t mean that he won’t be at some point, but the NFL views that as something they’re still continuing to look into and investigate, and you know the legal process is still pending. So for now, he’s on the team.
