The Marquette University men’s basketball team has added former Maryland standout Darryl Morsell to the 2021-22 roster, first-year head coach Shaka Smart announced Monday afternoon.
Morsell (6-5, 200) arrives in Milwaukee after spending the last four seasons at Maryland. In 2020-21, he was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and earned a spot on the league’s all-defensive team. He averaged 9.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game in 30 appearances and shot 48.6 percent from the floor. The Terrapins advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament last season.
“We are extremely excited about Darryl joining our program,” Smart said. “He comes from an outstanding family, possesses tremendous character, and impacts winning in a variety of ways. Darryl’s leadership will have a powerful affect on our team.”
A two-time all-conference selection, Morsell is ranked among Maryland’s all-time leaders in minutes, starts, rebounds and points. He is one of just 16 players in program history with 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 100 starts.
Morsell will be on campus in July and have one season of eligibility with the Golden Eagles. He earned his bachelor’s degree in family science from Maryland in 2020 and will pursue a graduate certificate in sports leadership at Marquette. He was a multiple-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree at Maryland.
