Orioles option Clevenger to Triple-A Norfolk to make room for returning Davis

As expected, the Orioles activated first baseman Chris Davis from the paternity leave list prior to Tuesday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers. What wasn’t expected was the decision to option catcher Steve Clevenger to Triple-A Norfolk in order to make room. The Orioles figured to option one of their three catchers on the 25-man roster following the Saturday acquisition of veteran Nick Hundley, but many assumed rookie Caleb Joseph would be sent back to the Tides. Clevenger had been serving as the starting catcher with Matt Wieters on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow discomfort, but it appears that the 30-year-Hundley will now step into the primary starting role. Hundley is a career .238 hitter and provided the game-winning hit in the top of the 10th inning of Monday’s 7-6 win over Milwaukee. Joseph is just 1-for-23 with the Orioles since being promoted earlier this month, but the 27-year-old is 4-for-10 throwing out runners attempting to steal. Never known as a strong defensive catcher in the minor leagues, Joseph has impressed manager Buck Showalter with his work behind the plate. The right-handed-hitting Hundley is only a .199 career hitter against left-handed pitching, making it likely that Joseph will receive

Ravens sign first-round linebacker Mosley to rookie contract

Less than three weeks after selecting nine players in the 2014 draft, the Ravens have all but one under contract after announcing they’ve signed first-round linebacker C.J. Mosley on Monday. The University of Alabama product was the 17th overall selection and is expected to start at the weakside inside linebacker spot next to veteran Daryl Smith in the base 3-4 defense. Mosley was the highest selection made by the Ravens since defensive tackle Haloti Ngata was the 12th overall pick of the 2006 draft. The 2013 Butkus Award winner made a strong impression with the coaching staff at rookie minicamp after members of the organization had been impressed with both his ability and leadership qualities throughout the pre-draft process. He totaled 320 tackles, 6 1/2 sacks, 19 pass breakups, five interceptions, and two forced fumbles in 51 career games at Alabama and is third on the Crimson Tide’s all-time tackles list. “He seems very comfortable in a defense. He understands the game very well. He’s been really well-coached, obviously, down [at Alabama],” head coach John Harbaugh said on May 17. “It’s not like he doesn’t know what gap he is fitting in. It’s not like he doesn’t know what adjustment

Ray Rice, wife scheduled to meet with media on Friday

After learning earlier this week that he will not be prosecuted for a domestic violence incident that took place in New Jersey earlier this offseason, Ravens running back Ray Rice is ready to break his silence. The 27-year-old is scheduled to address the media at the Ravens’ training facility in Owings Mills at 3 p.m. on Friday afternoon and will be accompanied by his wife, Janay, according to a team release. Rice was accepted into a pretrial intervention program earlier this week, which means he will avoid going to trial and will not face any prison time for third-degree aggravated assault. The Ravens are scheduled to begin their first session of organized team activity workouts next week and would like to avoid media attention focusing solely on Rice’s case, making Friday’s press conference logical from a timing standpoint. However, Rice and the organization still await word from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on any potential fine or suspension for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. Rice has yet to speak publicly about the incident that occurred at the Revel Casino in Atlantic City on February 15. He and his then-fiancée were both initially charged with simple assault-domestic violence before the grand

Ravens add three veterans; cut Furstenburg, two others

After this past weekend’s rookie minicamp, the Ravens have signed three veteran free agents while waving goodbye to three former members of their practice squad. Baltimore announced the signings of fullback Shaun Chapas, guard Will Rackley, and tight end Phillip Supernaw and the releases of former Maryland tight end Matt Furstenburg, defensive lineman Cody Larsen, and outside linebacker and Randallstown product D.J. Bryant. Of the three veterans to sign with Baltimore on Monday, Rackley presents the most intrigue after he started 25 of the 26 games he played for the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2011 through 2013. A third-round pick of the 2011 draft, the 24-year-old guard missed the entire 2012 season due to an ankle injury. It will be interesting to see if Rackley’s starting experience would prompt the Ravens to open up more of a competition at the left guard spot with Kelechi Osemele then moving to right tackle, a position the Ravens surprisingly didn’t address during this year’s draft. Chapas has spent time with the Dallas Cowboys, Detroit Lions, and Jacksonville Jaguars in his career and has appeared in six games, making two receptions for 15 yards. Supernaw was with the Houston Texans the last two years, appearing

Gausman sent back to Triple-A Norfolk to make room for Meek

Kevin Gausman’s first run with the Orioles in the 2014 season ended just over 24 hours after it began. The 23-year-old right-hander was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk to make room for right-handed reliever Evan Meek as Baltimore was preparing to begin a four-game series against the Kansas City Royals on Thursday. Pitching on three days’ rest and less than two weeks removed from being diagnosed with a bout of pneumonia, Gausman struggled in his 2014 debut against the Detroit Tigers, surrendering five earned runs in four innings of work as the Orioles were swept in a 7-5 final on Wednesday afternoon. Though the 2012 first-round pick had posted a 2.08 earned run average in his six starts for the Tides, the decision to recall him after such a tumultuous two weeks was questionable at best as he hadn’t gotten back in the normal routine of a starting pitcher. Manager Buck Showalter shared the desire to give left-hander Wei-Yin Chen an extra day of rest — and hinted that he didn’t want the lefty pitching against a Detroit lineup that’s mostly right-handed — and didn’t want to start Miguel Gonzalez on three days’ rest, prompting his temporary move to the bullpen

Ravens issue jersey numbers to 2014 draft class

The Baltimore Ravens announced Monday which jersey numbers they’ve assigned their 2014 draft class of nine rookies. Inside linebacker C.J. Mosley was not only taken with the 17th overall pick in the first round but his jersey number will garner the most attention as he will wear No. 57, which was last worn by Bart Scott and is obviously associated with former Ravens linebacker and current senior advisor of player development O.J. Brigance. The Alabama rookie acknowledged the privilege of wearing the number via his verified Twitter account on Monday afternoon. The only other jersey number choice of interesting note is second-round defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan being assigned No. 97, which was worn by former Ravens defensive lineman Arthur Jones for the last four years before he signed with the Indianapolis Colts earlier this offseason. Here is a complete list of the jersey numbers assigned to the 2014 draft class: LB C.J. Mosley – No. 57 DT Timmy Jernigan – No. 97 FS Terrence Brooks – No. 33 TE Crockett Gilmore – No. 80 DE Brent Urban – No. 96 RB Lorenzo Taliaferro – No. 34 OL John Urschel – No. 64 QB Keith Wenning – No. 10 WR Michael

Dates, times finalized for Ravens' preseason schedule

The NFL unveiled the Ravens’ 2014 preseason schedule last month and released the dates and times to go with them on Monday afternoon. Baltimore will kick off the preseason against the San Francisco 49ers in a rematch of Super Bowl XLVII on Thursday, Aug. 7 at 7:30 p.m. at M&T Bank Stadium. Head coach John Harbaugh and 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh have also agreed to hold four joint practices following the preseason opener as the brothers’ teams will have an opportunity to break up the monotony of training camp. The Ravens will travel to Arlington, Texas to take on the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday, Aug. 16 in the first ever preseason meeting between the teams. In the all-important third preseason game, the Ravens will welcome the Washington Redskins to M&T Bank Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 23 for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. This will mark the eighth time these geographic rivals have met in the preseason. The preseason will wrap with a trip to New Orleans to face the Saints on Thursday, Aug. 28 at 8 p.m. None of the Ravens’ games will be televised nationally, but all will be shown locally. Entering their 19th season, the Ravens are 42-29 in

Gausman won’t be summoned to join Orioles’ overworked bullpen

After sweeping a Thursday doubleheader against the Pittsburgh Pirates in which four relievers pitched in both games, the Orioles will bring a new bullpen arm to Minnesota on Friday. However, it won’t be top pitching prospect Kevin Gausman as manager Buck Showalter revealed the right-hander will be scratched from Friday’s start for Triple-A Norfolk due to an intercostal strain. The 23-year-old could be going to the minor league disabled list while the Orioles will look elsewhere for fresh bullpen help for a three-game series against the Minnesota Twins. Right-hander Evan Meek was optioned to Norfolk following the second game of the doubleheader, but a corresponding roster move wasn’t immediately announced. Bullpen options to be considered include Norfolk’s Preston Guilmet and Suk-min Yoon and Double-A Bowie’s Tim Berry since all three pitchers are already on the 40-man roster. But it’s possible the Orioles could select the contract of a pitcher who isn’t currently on the 40-man roster, according to Showalter. “We’re talking about it. Contemplating who and what,” Showalter said. “Gausman was scheduled to pitch [Friday], but he’s got an injury right now and it looks like he’s going to be scratched from his start [Friday]. I was looking during the
