NFL won't fine Harbaugh for bumping official Sunday night

Multiple outlets are reporting the NFL will not fine coach John Harbaugh for making contact with an official during the Ravens’ 31-30 win over the New England Patriots on Sunday night. Harbaugh picked up a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for bumping an official while trying to call a timeout in the fourth quarter. The coach had expressed confidence that the league would not fine him prior to the news breaking. “I guess I didn’t understand how he interpreted it,” Harbaugh said following the game. “But, what we’re told is to get the timeout where they can see it in front of their face in those situations. That’s what I’ve been told for five years going into this game. I think he took it as bumping him. I didn’t mean to bump him. I wanted to call a timeout, so I apologize for bumping, but the intent was to call a timeout.” Unlike Harbaugh, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick will be fined for grabbing an official at the conclusion of the game.

Ravens back in black — sort of — against Browns Thursday night

As the Ravens prepare for their third prime-time home game in four weeks, I believe I’ve fielded more questions about which uniform they’ll be wearing each week than who will be lining up at rush linebacker. Wearing purple jerseys with white pants in each of their first three games — they wore their dark jerseys in Philadelphia as the Eagles wore white — the Ravens will finally be back in black when they welcome the Cleveland Browns to M&T Bank Stadium on Thursday night. It’s just not the look most fans were hoping to see. A team official confirmed the Ravens would once again wear their purple tops but will do so with black pants this time. The purple-and-black combination was the team’s home uniform in their 1996 inaugural season and brought back the look in a prime-time game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Dec. 5, 2010. They wore black pants with their purple jerseys in their final two home games last season, the Christmas Eve game against the Cleveland Browns and their divisional-round contest against the Houston Texans. Healthier Ravens make final preparations for New England

(Updated: 3:15 p.m.) OWINGS MILLS, Md. — The Ravens conducted their final full practice of the week in preparation for their Sunday night showdown with the New England Patriots and appeared to be working with their full 53-man squad. Though they performed their traditional “jersey swap” for Friday’s practice, all players listed on Thursday’s injury report were present and working, including offensive lineman Jah Reid (calf). Safety Bernard Pollard (chest), cornerback Lardarius Webb (knee), linebacker Jameel McClain (knee), and defensive end Pernell McPhee (knee) were all practicing during the portion of practice open to the media. All four defensive starters were listed as limited participants for Thursday’s practice after sitting out Wednesday. Listed as full participants on Thursday, linebacker Paul Kruger (back) and left tackle Michael Oher (ankle) were both working and no longer appear to be a concern for Sunday’s game. Reid was practicing — likely on a limited basis — for the first time since suffering a setback during training camp. No "blackout" again for Ravens in prime time

After the Ravens elected to wear their regular purple jerseys to begin the season on Monday Night Football two weeks ago, most assumed they were saving their alternate black jerseys for the Week 3 matchup with the New England Patriots. Instead, the Ravens will wear purple again in a rematch of last January’s AFC Championship game on NBC’s Sunday Night Football. It remains unclear when or if Baltimore will wear its popular alternate jerseys this season. A team official confirmed the plan for Sunday is for the Ravens to wear their purple tops with white pants, which would mark the third straight week they’ve worn that uniform combination. Baltimore wore its black jerseys against the New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers in night games played in Baltimore last season and had last worn their purple duds in a nationally-televised prime-time game against Pittsburgh in 2010 before the Monday night opener on Sept. 10. Of course, the Ravens play their third nationally-televised prime-time game of the month next Thursday against the Cleveland Browns, but it would seem to be an odd choice to don the black jerseys in that one over the first two night games played at M&T Bank

McPhee, Kruger still sidelined for Thursday's practice

(Updated: 8:30 p.m.) OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Practicing in helmets, shells, and shorts for the second straight day, the Ravens were once again without defensive end Pernell McPhee and strongside linebacker Paul Kruger. Kruger is dealing with a back injury and appeared to be banged up in the locker room following the Ravens’ 44-13 win over Cincinnati on Monday night. McPhee is dealing with a right knee ailment but said in the locker room prior to Thursday’s practice that he was improving and wasn’t concerned with his status for Sunday’s game against the Eagles. McPhee underwent arthroscopic surgery in the spring and missed much of the team’s organized team activities. He received a few periodic days off to rest the knee during training camp. “I feel pretty good, I feel better,” McPhee said. “I expect to play Sunday.” Veteran center Matt Birk returned to practice after sitting out Wednesday’s practice with a thigh injury. Kruger, McPhee, Birk non-participants in Wednesday's practice

(Updated: 9:00 p.m.) OWINGS MILLS, Md. — The Ravens took the field late Wednesday afternoon for their first full practice in preparation for the Philadelphia Eagles and were without two defensive starters. Defensive end Pernell McPhee and strongside linebacker Paul Kruger were not present during the portion of practice open to the media. Arthroscopic knee surgery limited McPhee early in the preseason, and he received occasional days off during training camp. The two players combined for just two tackles, though McPhee shared a quarterback sack with rookie linebacker Courtney Upshaw. Center Matt Birk and offensive lineman Jah Reid (calf) were both on the field without helmets but were not working with the rest of the offensive linemen. It’s not uncommon for the 36-year-old Birk to receive days off from practice over the course of the regular season. Safety Ed Reed (hamstring) and cornerback Corey Graham (leg) were both practicing after leaving Monday’s game with injuries. The free safety told reporters after the game he wasn’t concerned about the hamstring strain and fully expected to be ready for the Week 2 contest against the Philadelphia Eagles. One of the featured Week 2 NFL matchups this weekend takes place between the San Francisco 49ers and the Detroit Lions, which has already sparked much discussion about the heated exchange between head coaches Jim Harbaugh and Jim Schwartz that took place in the moments following the 49ers’ win last season. Both coaches have already dismissed any notion of a lingering grudge, but last year’s incident is sure to be a major point of interest when the teams play on Sunday night. With the Orioles taking care of the Tampa Bay Rays in the opener of a three-game set and the Yankees falling at Fenway Park, Tuesday became an unprecedented night in the history of Baltimore sports. The end of the day marked the first time ever that the Orioles and Ravens each held at least a share of first place as Baltimore enjoys the most combined prosperity in its major professional sports teams in nearly 30 years. The feat appeared to be simple to identify at first glance with the Ravens enjoying much success over the last 12 years while the Orioles have languished in the lower half of the division every year since 1997. However, the first-place duality nearly took place in 1997 when the Orioles spent the entire season in first place while the Ravens finished their second year in Baltimore with an underwhelming 6-9-1 record.
