Dumervil still missing from practice due to ankle injury

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — The Ravens continued preparations for a key Week 15 meeting against the Detroit Lions with a key member of their pass rush again missing from practice. Outside linebacker Elvis Dumervil continues to be sidelined with a left ankle injury suffered in the Week 13 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thanksgiving night. The 29-year-old missed his first game of the season this past Sunday in the 29-26 win over Minnesota after coach John Harbaugh expressed optimism early last week that the rush specialist would be able to play. The Baltimore coach is taking a more conservative stance on Dumervil’s status this week, saying Monday that he has “a chance” of playing against Detroit. “It’s definitely gotten better,” said Dumervil, adding that he plans to try to return to the practice field on Friday. “The strength is getting there. Just trying to continue to work on strengthening that ankle.” He injured his ankle late in the first half of the win over the Steelers but returned in the second half to finish the game, making his slow recovery time concerning after initial optimism that he wouldn’t miss any further action. Dumervil acknowledged playing through great pain in

Dumervil absent Wednesday, Jimmy Smith cleared from concussion protocol

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — After coach John Harbaugh offered an optimistic outlook for the Ravens’ health earlier in the week, Wednesday’s practice confirmed his feelings as outside linebacker Elvis Dumervil was the only notable player not to participate. The rush specialist injured his ankle in the second quarter of last week’s win over the Pittsburgh Steelers but returned early in the second half to finish the game. Harbaugh said Dumervil looked OK on Monday but hinted that he might be limited during practices this week before expressing confidence that all players who were nicked up in last Thursday’s game would be able to play Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings. Cornerback Jimmy Smith (head) practiced on a limited basis after being cleared by doctors after completing the league’s concussion protocol. The third-year defensive back appeared woozy while walking off the field following the violent collision with Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell late in the fourth quarter. “Jimmy is becoming one of the top corners in the National Football League by the way he is playing,” said Harbaugh on the importance of Smith being cleared. “The numbers bear that out, and the film bears it out. It’s important to our football team,

Stokley leaves game with sprained left knee

On the heels of their big 22-20 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thanksgiving night, the Ravens will take advantage of the extra time off to rest and recover from a brutally physical game with their AFC North adversary. A number of players left at different points in the action, but the most serious injury appeared to occur to veteran wide receiver Brandon Stokley, who left the game late in the first half with a left knee sprain and did not occur. It was only Stokley’s second game back from a nagging groin injury that had hindered him since the end of September. Coach John Harbaugh didn’t have any new information on Stokley’s status following the game. “He has got a knee [injury],” Harbaugh said. “We’ll see about it Friday.” Cornerback Jimmy Smith was shaken up on the violent goal-line collision with Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell late in the fourth quarter and was down on the field for a couple minutes before walking off on his own power. Harbaugh said the starting defensive back “should be OK” despite Smith appearing woozy as

Harbaugh guarded in response to Flacco's criticism of offense

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) A day after Joe Flacco compared the Ravens’ offensive wrinkles to that of a high school team, coach John Harbaugh wasn’t tipping his hand in reacting to his quarterback’s criticism. Flacco made his feelings clear Tuesday about his dislike for the wildcat offense and lining up as a wide receiver, and the Baltimore coach appeared uncomfortable in addressing the sixth-year signal-caller’s words, instead wanting to focus on Thursday’s prime-time meeting with the Pittsburgh Steelers. “My reaction would be my reaction. I’ll just leave it at that,” Harbaugh said. “One thing about Joe — and I think any great player — is they want the ball in their hands. And he’s always been that way. He’s always felt that way. I want him to have the ball in his hands.” Perhaps the most interesting development from Harbaugh’s response on Wednesday came when he was asked whether Flacco’s words would impact whether or not they run the novelty formation in the future. The quarterback said he didn’t anticipate the Ravens running the wildcat formation much after sharing his feelings with the coaching staff. Harbaugh acknowledging

Ravens light on injuries in short week to prepare for Steelers

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Despite working on a short week in preparation for a Thanksgiving meeting with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Ravens appear to be as healthy as they’ve been all season with only two players on the injury report for a second straight day. Defensive end Chris Canty (shoulder) was a limited participant for a second straight day after briefly leaving Sunday’s win over the New York Jets while rookie reserve safety Brynden Trawick continues to be sidelined by an ankle injury suffered in the first quarter of the Week 12 win. The good news for the Ravens is the improving health of defensive tackle Haloti Ngata, who is no longer appearing on the injury report after dealing with a left knee injury for the better part of two weeks. The eighth-year defensive lineman made it through the Jets contest without any issues after being a game-time decision. “It actually stayed loose throughout the game and it loosened up more, so it felt good,” Ngata said. “It was great to get back on the field, and our schedule is great this week
