Cundiff back at practice, hoping to return on Sunday

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Though veteran Shayne Graham would love the opportunity to kick against his old team in Cincinnati, Billy Cundiff returned to practice on Wednesday in hopes of making his return against the Bengals in the regular-season finale. Cundiff had not practiced since Dec. 7 and was limited in games against Indianapolis and San Diego before fully resting his injured left calf last week. The 2010 Pro Bowl kicker now appears confident in wanting to get back on the field. “It’s come a long way,” Cundiff said. “Obviously, I needed the rest. I couldn’t even make it through the game, so now this is just a matter of trying to progress it and see if I can make it through practice. If we can do that, then hopefully we’ll be able to play on Sunday.” Right guard Marshal Yanda, linebacker Dannell Ellerbe, and defensive tackle Arthur Jones did not participate in Wednesday’s practice. Speculation persists about the severity of the rib and thigh contusions that forced Yanda out of Saturday’s game. Ellerbe is still waiting to be cleared to play after suffering a concussion against Cleveland. Defensive end Cory Redding and cornerback Cary Williams returned to practice on

Yanda missing from practice while three injured Ravens return to work

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Preparing for arguably the most important regular-season game in the history of the franchise, the Ravens returned to the practice field with several ailing players at their disposal. Right guard Marshal Yanda (rib and thigh contusions) was not one of them as the Pro Bowl lineman was absent from the portion of practice open to the media, joining linebacker Dannell Ellerbe (concussion), defensive lineman Arthur Jones (undisclosed), and wide receiver Anquan Boldin (knee surgery) as absentees. With Boldin already expected to miss Sunday’s game in Cincinnati, Yanda’s injury is the most concerning as the Ravens are faced with the possibility of using veteran Andre Gurode or rookie Jah Reid at right guard, which is neither player’s primary position. Gurode did play right guard early in his career with the Dallas Cowboys but earned five trips to the Pro Bowl at the center position. Meanwhile, cornerback Cary Williams has been cleared for contact and return to the practice field after sustaining a concussion in last Saturday’s win, a positive development considering how equipped the Cincinnati Bengals are at the wide receiver position with A.J. Green and Jerome Simpson. Defensive end Cory Redding (ankle) and kicker Billy Cundiff

Boldin, Redding absent for second straight day

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Defensive end Cory Redding has expressed confidence that he’ll play while wide receiver Anquan Boldin’s status remains more mysterious as the Ravens prepare to welcome the Cleveland Browns to town on Christmas Eve. Neither veteran was present during the open portion of practice on Thursday after both veterans were listed as non-participants on Wednesday’s injury report. Redding has been dealing with a right ankle injury for a couple weeks while Boldin’s absence is puzzling after he was present for the Ravens’ walk-through practice on Tuesday. The No. 1 receiver is listed on the report as having a knee injury. Kicker Billy Cundiff (left calf) was not present during the portion of practice viewed by media, a strong indication that newly-signed veteran Shayne Graham will handle kicking duties against Cleveland on Saturday. Cundiff hasn’t practiced since Dec. 7 despite having kicked in the Ravens’ last two games. Referee Walt Coleman and his crew will officiate Saturday afternoon’s game between the Ravens and Cleveland. The weather forecast predicts sunny conditions with temperatures in the mid-40s.

Ravens add Boldin to shrinking injury report on Wednesday

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — At a time of year when many teams have a laundry list of players on their injury reports, the Ravens find themselves getting healthier as they enter a Week 16 meeting with the Cleveland Browns. Baltimore only listed three players on its first practice report of the week as defensive end Cory Redding, wide receiver Anquan Boldin, and kicker Billy Cundiff did not participate in Wednesday’s outdoor practice. Redding has been dealing with a sore ankle while Cundiff is hampered with a left calf injury that forced the Ravens to sign veteran Shayne Graham as an insurance policy. It’s unclear whether Boldin’s listed knee injury is more an issue of soreness or something he obtained in the loss to San Diego last Sunday night. He was present for the team’s walk-through practice on Tuesday afternoon. Cornerback Lardarius Webb, linebacker Ray Lewis, and cornerback Chris Carr were not listed on Wednesday’s injury report, a sign that the Ravens are getting healthier as the postseason looms closer. Meanwhile, the Browns listed had seven players absent from Wednesday’s practice, including cornerback Joe Haden, wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi, and quarterback Colt McCoy. The Cleveland signal caller is not expected to

Harbaugh unobliging in discussing Ravens' injuries on Friday

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — It’s been the same story for the last month as Ray Lewis has been sidelined with a turf toe injury. The media ask about the Ravens linebacker’s chances of playing, and coach John Harbaugh provides an answer offering some level of hope despite Lewis having missed the last four games. However, the Ravens coach was not willing to play the same game on Friday afternoon after Lewis had just completed his third straight practice of the week. “We’ll see, we’ll see,” said Harbaugh when asked of Lewis’ chances to return against the San Diego Chargers on Sunday night. “You know who’s playing anyway, so just report what you know. Sometimes, you’re right. Sometimes, you’re wrong. You’re about 50-50 right now. We’ll see what you got.” Of course, Harbaugh was referring to the speculation of the last couple weeks suggesting Lewis would make his return against the Chargers in Week 15. That outcome appears all but certain after the 36-year-old made it through a week of practice without any setbacks. The Ravens are 4-0 in Lewis’ absence, but would clearly welcome back their emotional and cerebral leader on defense with open arms as they take on the

Ngata, Grubbs back; Webb still sidelined on Thursday

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — A day after five key players were sidelined, the Ravens welcomed back defensive tackle Haloti Ngata and left guard Ben Grubbs to Thursday’s practice while they continued to wait on the injury status of three others. Ngata (back) and Grubbs (toe) appeared to simply receive a day off on Wednesday while kicker Billy Cundiff (left calf), defensive end Cory Redding (ankle), and cornerback Lardarius Webb (left toe) were again absent from the portion of practice open to the media. It should be noted that the viewing portion of practice concluded with several players still arriving on the indoor practice field. Webb’s injury is considered to be the most serious as it appears likely the Ravens’ No. 1 cornerback will be unavailable against the San Diego Chargers on Sunday night. Linebacker Ray Lewis (toe) and cornerback Chris Carr (back) were present and working for the second straight day, improving their chances to return to action in San Diego. The 36-year-old Lewis has missed the last four games with a turf toe injury while Carr has missed the Ravens’ last three contests. Both were listed as limited participants on Wednesday’s injury report. The Ravens will depart Baltimore on
