A. Jones undergoing tests for undisclosed illness, McPhee limited Tuesday

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) OWINGS MILLS, Md. — There were no changes to practice attendance for the Ravens on Tuesday as they continued preparations for their season-opening game against the Denver Broncos. Already ruled out for Thursday night’s game at Sports Authority Field at Mile High, defensive tackle Arthur Jones (undisclosed illness) was once again missing from the field and hasn’t practiced since playing in the Ravens’ third preseason game on Aug. 22. Coach John Harbaugh reiterated Tuesday that the health issue is not related to football and once again deferred to Jones to decide what details he eventually discloses. “It’s not anything that’s like life-threatening or anything like that, but it’s non-football related,” Harbaugh said. “We’ve just got to get some tests done to make sure he’s OK. Until the tests come out the right way, he’s not going to be able to play. It’s something that I’ve been told now they can’t tell you how long it will be. It could be a week; it could be indefinitely. We don’t think it’s going to be the second part of it.” According to the Ravens coach,

Ravens add former Towson receiver Sheppard, running back to practice squad

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) OWINGS MILLS, Md. — The Ravens completed their practice squad Monday by re-signing former Towson wide receiver Gerrard Sheppard and adding running back Jonas Gray. Baltimore released undrafted offensive lineman Jordan Devey a day after adding him to their developmental squad. Sheppard was with the Ravens throughout the offseason and summer before he was waived on Aug. 25, but the McDonough grad left quite an impression on coach John Harbaugh, making his inclusion on the practice squad less surprising. He did not record a catch in the preseason. “These are men with dreams and aspirations who work really hard, [like] a Gerrard Sheppard — [a] local guy from Towson who just did a great job for us,” Harbaugh said in late August. “He is a really talented, hard-working, good person, and no matter what he does in life, he’s going to be amazingly successful.” Gray was with the Miami Dolphins in the preseason after spending his college career at Notre Dame. As a senior with the Fighting Irish, Gray carried the ball 114 times for 791 yards and 12 touchdowns. In 40 rushing

Ravens awarded veteran LB Robert James off waivers from Atlanta

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) The Ravens filled their open roster spot Sunday by claiming veteran linebacker Robert James off waivers from the Atlanta Falcons. Third-year receiver LaQuan Williams was waived earlier in the day to create a place on the 53-man roster for James, who was a fifth-round pick in the 2008 draft. The 29-year-old has appeared in 18 games in his career, including all 16 for the Falcons last season while serving primarily on special teams. At 5-feet-11 and 224 pounds, the Arizona State product is undersized for the linebacker position but figures to be a contributor for special teams coordinator Jerry Rosburg’s coverage units. James made 11 tackles last season. Prior to 2012, James’ status within the Falcons organization was mostly in flux as he waived on a few occasions and bounced back and forth between the practice squad and the active roster.

Ravens linebacker and Randallstown grad Bryant suffers serious knee injury

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) Linebacker D.J. Bryant hoped to make a bid for a long-shot chance at the 53-man roster Thursday night in St. Louis but instead suffered what’s believed to be a season-ending injury. The Randallstown graduate suffered a significant left knee injury at the end of the first half when he collided with teammate John Simon. Bryant was down on the field in obvious pain before being carted to the locker room after playing a strong first half that included three tackles and a sack. “That looks like a season ender,” head coach John Harbaugh told reporters in St. Louis after the game. “We’ll know [on Friday] after we get the MRI but all indications are there’s substantial ligament damage there — nothing that he can’t come back from. Obviously, he’ll work on that. I’m sure he’ll get surgery and rehab it.” Bryant figured to be a solid candidate for the practice squad, so the injury likely means he will be placed on injured reserve, allowing him to remain with the organization. He was a member of the team’s practice squad late last season.

Ngata back at practice, A. Jones sidelined with "personal health thing"

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Ravens defensive tackle Haloti Ngata returned to the practice field Tuesday after being excused the previous two days to deal with a family matter. However, the Ravens were still dealing with the absence of starting defensive end Arthur Jones and rush specialist Pernell McPhee during their final workout of the week open for media viewing. McPhee has experienced knee soreness for the better part of a week while the reason for Jones’ absence was partially explained by coach John Harbaugh after Tuesday’s practice. “Art had an issue — it’s not football-related,” Harbaugh said. “I’m going to leave it to Art to explain what it was, but it was more of a personal health thing that’s not serious. But we just held him back this week.” Others missing from the practice field on Tuesday included wide receiver Deonte Thompson (foot), offensive lineman Ryan Jensen (foot), and tight end Dennis Pitta (hip). Backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor (concussion) was practicing once again and appeared to be moving closer to being available to play in Thursday’s preseason finale if the Ravens don’t elect

Ngata, A. Jones still missing from practice on Monday

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) OWINGS MILLS, Md. — The Ravens were still missing two starters along their defensive line Monday as Pro Bowl defensive tackle Haloti Ngata and defensive end Arthur Jones were absent from the open portion of practice. Coach John Harbaugh told reporters Sunday that Ngata had been excused to deal with a family issue, but the eighth-year defensive lineman wasn’t on the field in the first 30 minutes of the workout a day later. Jones (undisclosed) was missing for the second straight day after Ravens players were off from practice on Friday and Saturday. Also missing from Monday’s practice were linebackers Pernell McPhee (knee) and Jameel McClain (neck), wide receiver Deonte Thompson (foot), defensive end Kapron Lewis-Moore (knee), offensive lineman Ryan Jensen (foot), and tight end Dennis Pitta (hip). McPhee missed last Thursday’s game against Carolina with what the Ravens are calling a knee injury and the third-year pass rusher hasn’t practiced since then. Harbaugh had no update on Thompson Sunday as the second-year wideout has been sidelined since Aug. 8 after injuring his foot in the preseason opener against Tampa Bay. His extensive

Taylor evaluated for potential concussion; Webb, Yanda receive first preseason action

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) The Ravens lost their first preseason game of the summer Thursday night but appeared to make it through the 34-27 loss to the Carolina Panthers with relative health. Coach John Harbaugh reported only one injury following the game as backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor left the game in the fourth quarter and was evaluated for a potential concussion. Third-string quarterback Caleb Hanie replaced Taylor after he was taken to the locker room for further tests. “He went through the concussion protocol there, so we’ll just have to play that one by ear, have not heard anything on that,” Harbaugh said. “Other than that, we came out healthy. [I’m] very pleased about that.” Cornerback Lardarius Webb and right guard Marshal Yanda made their preseason debuts and reported no setbacks following the game as Webb played an outside cornerback spot in the nickel package and Yanda played the first couple series with the starting offensive line. Webb hadn’t played in a game since suffering a torn ACL last Oct. 14 and had been practicing on a limited basis from the start of training camp before increasing

Ravens release veteran cornerback Johnson

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) Just over a week before NFL teams must trim their preseason rosters from 90 players to 75, the Ravens have released veteran cornerback Chris Johnson. Reportedly struggling to deal with migraine headaches over the last couple weeks, the 33-year-old had missed a sizable portion of training camp and missed last Thursday’s preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons. Johnson was battling young cornerbacks such as Asa Jackson, Marc Anthony, and Moe Lee for a place on the 53-man roster. Signed last November to sure up a roster that had lost cornerbacks Lardarius Webb and Jimmy Smith due to injuries, Johnson played in five games, making seven tackles and forcing a fumble. Johnson was active for the AFC Championship against the New England Patriots but did not play in the other three games of the Ravens’ run to a Super Bowl championship. Johnson signed a one-year deal this offseason to remain with the Ravens, but he was never considered a lock to make the regular-season roster.

Ravens escape second preseason game without any serious injuries

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) After the Ravens’ 27-23 preseason win over the Atlanta Falcons, head coach John Harbaugh painted a positive picture from a health standpoint. Outside linebacker Elvis Dumervil suffered a minor groin injury and rookie safety Matt Elam tweaked his ankle, but the head coach described both as “fine” after the game. Dumervil also downplayed any significance to his ailment in the Baltimore locker room. “Nothing really injury-wise came out of this game,” Harbaugh said of the injury picture. “So that’s a positive.” According to The Sun, reserve outside linebacker Adrian Hamilton injured his wrist and will have further tests on it Friday. Rookie defensive tackle Brandon Williams was also shaken up in the second half of Thursday’s game but returned to action soon thereafter. Last week against Tampa Bay, the Ravens lost wide receiver Deonte Thompson (ankle), running back Bernard Pierce (knee), and defensive tackle Marcus Spears (hamstring) and only Pierce has returned to practice at this point.

Injured linebacker McClain, Ravens reportedly restructure contract

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) Still sidelined as he recovers from a spinal cord contusion suffered last December, veteran linebacker Jameel McClain is reportedly taking a smaller salary to remain with the Baltimore Ravens this season. According to Tom Pelissero of USA Today, the Ravens have reduced McClain’s $3 million base salary for the 2013 season to just $1.5 million, offering an additional $1.5 million in cap savings for general manager Ozzie Newsome. The report also indicated that McClain’s projected 2014 salary of $3.2 million was unchanged. Baltimore now has roughly $5.5 million in salary cap space, which is important considering Newsome will keep his eyes on the market for more wide receiver help between now and the start of the regular season. The Ravens signed veteran slot receiver Brandon Stokley to a one-year minimum salary benefit contract earlier in the week, which pays him a $940,000 salary but carries only a $620,000 cap charge. Veteran tight end Dallas Clark also signed a  one-year minimum salary benefit contract. Signed to a three-year, $10.5 million contract that included a $3.6 million signing bonus in 2012, McClain injured his neck against the Washington
