Reed fined $55,000 for hit on Giants' Cruz

Ravens free safety Ed Reed has been fined a reported $55,000 for a penalized hit on New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz in last Sunday’s 33-14 win for Baltimore. The veteran appeared to hit Cruz in the chest with his shoulder before making contact with the wideout’s facemask. Reed was penalized 15 yards for unnecessary roughness for contact to the head and neck area of a defenseless player, according to Week 16 referee Carl Cheffers. Earlier this season, Reed was initially suspended one game for a hit on Pittsburgh receiver Emmanuel Sanders before the suspension was overturned. Reed was instead fined $50,000 by arbitrator Ted Cotrell after an appeal that was supported by team president Dick Cass and general manager Ozzie Newsome. “It’s just an interesting situation,” said Reed prior to news of the latest fine surfacing Thursday night. “I just play the game. I’ll let them make those decisions.”

Ravens' opponents set for 2013 season

After clinching their second straight AFC North division title on Sunday, the Ravens now know who they will play during the 2013 regular season. Baltimore will play the NFC North for the first time since the 2009 season and will take on the entire AFC East for the first time since 2010. The Ravens will also play the AFC South and AFC West division winners, Houston and Denver. Harbaugh confirms plan for Lewis not to return before postseason; Boldin leaves with shoulder injury

BALTIMORE — The Ravens clinched their second straight AFC North division title by way of a 33-14 win over the New York Giants to make their decision to hold back linebacker Ray Lewis until the playoffs that much easier. The 37-year-old linebacker must be placed on the 53-man roster this week after his 21-day window for practice concludes but will not play in the regular-season finale against the Cincinnati Bengals. “We will not look at him again for this week. We’ll look at him at the playoffs,” coach John Harbaugh said. “It’s an injury that is a 12- to 16-week injury. If you do the math going back, we thought there was a chance. He is progressing really well. I’m not saying he couldn’t have played the last couple of weeks, but it would’ve been risky to re-injure it. The fact that there was some patience on Ray’s part and our part, it turned out well.” Lewis returned to the practice field on Dec. 5 and is still less than 10 weeks removed from surgery to repair the torn triceps in his right arm. Ravens officially place McClain on IR, promote Hamilton from practice squad

Following Saturday’s news that Ray Lewis would not make his return to action against the New York Giants on Sunday, the Ravens officially placed linebacker Jameel McClain on injured reserve and promoted outside linebacker Adrian Hamilton from the practice squad. McClain suffered a spinal cord contusion against the Washington Redskins on Dec. 9 and was declared out for the season by coach John Harbaugh earlier this week. The Ravens appeared to delay making a roster move in hopes of Lewis taking his place on the 53-man roster but instead elected to place Hamilton on the roster. Hamilton was signed to the Ravens’ practice squad on Sept. 3 and starred at Prairie View A&M during his collegiate career. In two seasons, he collected 108 tackles, 26 sacks, and 34 1/2 tackles for loss. As a senior last year, the 6-foot-3, 251-pound pass rusher led all Division I FCS players with 20 1/2 sacks, which set a new Southwestern Athletic Conference record The Ravens could have promoted inside linebacker Nigel Carr from the practice squad to boost depth at the position but chose not to do so, which might be an indication they’re feeling optimistic about the potential return of Dannell Ellerbe.

Ravens to wear black jerseys in regular-season home finale

Sunday marks the Ravens’ final regular-season contest of the year at M&T Bank Stadium, and they’ll be going out in style as they wear their black jerseys against the New York Giants. The Ravens announced Wednesday they will wear their alternate tops for the second time this season as they try to snap a three-game losing streak and lock up their second consecutive AFC North title. Baltimore wore the black jerseys in Week 13 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, a game in which the Ravens lost 23-20 on a Shaun Suisham field goal as time expired. Sporting a 9-3 all-time record wearing their alternate jerseys, the Ravens have yet to decide their pants color for Sunday’s game. Teams are only permitted to wear their alternate or throwback jerseys twice per season and are prohibited from wearing them in the postseason.

The task for the Ravens is clear against the New York Giants, even if it remains a difficult challenge with their recent struggles and three-game losing streak. Win and they’re AFC North champions for the second straight season. A loss keeps their division hopes up in the air, regardless of what happens earlier Sunday between Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. Both the Bengals and the Steelers have a chance to win the division while the Ravens simply need one win in their final two weeks of the regular season to guarantee the division title. Via the three-way head-to-head tiebreaker, Pittsburgh would win the AFC North if the Ravens lose their final two games and the Steelers win their last two. The Bengals are the AFC North champions if they beat Pittsburgh and Baltimore in their final two games (with the Ravens falling in Week 16, of course). The Ravens could still win the AFC North without winning another game should the Bengals lose to the Steelers on Sunday and Pittsburgh fall to Cleveland in the final week of the season. Ravens remain in wait-and-see pattern with infirmary report

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — As the Ravens desperately seek to get healthier for their Week 16 meeting with the New York Giants, head coach John Harbaugh didn’t offer much of an idea on which players might be returning to action this Sunday. Aside from the announcement of linebacker Jameel McClain’s season coming to an end, Harbaugh offered the typical wait-and-see approach he’s expressed to media as the Ravens have dealt with a plethora of injuries. Of the Ravens’ seven inactives for Sunday’s loss to the Denver Broncos, five were starters, including strong safety Bernard Pollard and right guard Marshal Yanda. “We’ll just see if they can practice and how much they can practice,” Harbaugh said. “We have some optimism with that. The guys that are out from last week, Marshal and Bernard, we’ll see how they go as the week goes along. Ed Dickson, the same. That’s really it on injury stuff.” Yanda (ankle) and Pollard (chest) missed all three practices last week and were considered highly unlikely to play despite being listed as questionable on the final injury report. Dickson, who has now missed three straight games, was listed as doubtful despite practicing on a limited basis last week

T. Smith, Pierce exit Sunday's game with concussions

BALTIMORE — As if the sting of a third straight loss wasn’t enough, the Ravens’ list of injuries grew even longer on Sunday as wide receiver Torrey Smith and running back Bernard Pierce both left the game with concussions. Pierce sustained his concussion in the second quarter while Smith was injured attempting to make a long reception early in the third quarter. Neither player returned to the game. “We’ll have to check those out later this week,” coach John Harbaugh said after the game. Smith made just one reception for 14 yards against the Broncos while Pierce carried the ball five times for 20 yards in the 34-17 loss at M&T Bank Stadium. Wide receiver Tandon Doss suffered a twisted ankle and linebacker Albert McClellan was dealing with a hamstring issue but returned to the game. Neither player appeared to be in bad shape in the locker room following the game.
