Ravens to wear black jerseys in regular-season home finale

Sunday marks the Ravens’ final regular-season contest of the year at M&T Bank Stadium, and they’ll be going out in style as they wear their black jerseys against the New York Giants. The Ravens announced Wednesday they will wear their alternate tops for the second time this season as they try to snap a three-game losing streak and lock up their second consecutive AFC North title. Baltimore wore the black jerseys in Week 13 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, a game in which the Ravens lost 23-20 on a Shaun Suisham field goal as time expired. Sporting a 9-3 all-time record wearing their alternate jerseys, the Ravens have yet to decide their pants color for Sunday’s game. Teams are only permitted to wear their alternate or throwback jerseys twice per season and are prohibited from wearing them in the postseason.

The task for the Ravens is clear against the New York Giants, even if it remains a difficult challenge with their recent struggles and three-game losing streak. Win and they’re AFC North champions for the second straight season. A loss keeps their division hopes up in the air, regardless of what happens earlier Sunday between Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. Both the Bengals and the Steelers have a chance to win the division while the Ravens simply need one win in their final two weeks of the regular season to guarantee the division title. Via the three-way head-to-head tiebreaker, Pittsburgh would win the AFC North if the Ravens lose their final two games and the Steelers win their last two. The Bengals are the AFC North champions if they beat Pittsburgh and Baltimore in their final two games (with the Ravens falling in Week 16, of course). The Ravens could still win the AFC North without winning another game should the Bengals lose to the Steelers on Sunday and Pittsburgh fall to Cleveland in the final week of the season. Ravens remain in wait-and-see pattern with infirmary report

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — As the Ravens desperately seek to get healthier for their Week 16 meeting with the New York Giants, head coach John Harbaugh didn’t offer much of an idea on which players might be returning to action this Sunday. Aside from the announcement of linebacker Jameel McClain’s season coming to an end, Harbaugh offered the typical wait-and-see approach he’s expressed to media as the Ravens have dealt with a plethora of injuries. Of the Ravens’ seven inactives for Sunday’s loss to the Denver Broncos, five were starters, including strong safety Bernard Pollard and right guard Marshal Yanda. “We’ll just see if they can practice and how much they can practice,” Harbaugh said. “We have some optimism with that. The guys that are out from last week, Marshal and Bernard, we’ll see how they go as the week goes along. Ed Dickson, the same. That’s really it on injury stuff.” Yanda (ankle) and Pollard (chest) missed all three practices last week and were considered highly unlikely to play despite being listed as questionable on the final injury report. T. Smith, Pierce exit Sunday's game with concussions

BALTIMORE — As if the sting of a third straight loss wasn’t enough, the Ravens’ list of injuries grew even longer on Sunday as wide receiver Torrey Smith and running back Bernard Pierce both left the game with concussions. Pierce sustained his concussion in the second quarter while Smith was injured attempting to make a long reception early in the third quarter. Neither player returned to the game. “We’ll have to check those out later this week,” coach John Harbaugh said after the game. Smith made just one reception for 14 yards against the Broncos while Pierce carried the ball five times for 20 yards in the 34-17 loss at M&T Bank Stadium. Wide receiver Tandon Doss suffered a twisted ankle and linebacker Albert McClellan was dealing with a hamstring issue but returned to the game. Neither player appeared to be in bad shape in the locker room following the game. Ravens players react to Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy

As we all try to process the unthinkable tragedy that took place in Newtown, Conn. on Friday that claimed the lives of 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School, the news devastated me not only as a person but as a former educator. Taking great pride in my five years as a fifth grade teacher, I struggle to find words to respond to such a heinous act. When I was teaching, we would conduct lockdown drills several times a year and I would always have at least a few students — older than the ones at Sandy Hook, mind you — who would grow uneasy, even though they were fully aware that we were only conducting a drill. As we gathered in a corner of the room with the classroom door locked and the lights off, I would always reassure my kids by saying there was a 99.9 percent chance that we’d never need to do this because of a dangerous situation, but we needed to be prepared just in case. Yanda, Pollard absent from practice for third straight day

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Two more players returned to the practice field for the Ravens on Friday, but the status of Pro Bowl guard Marshal Yanda and safety Bernard Pollard remains in doubt as both missed their third straight workout ahead of Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos. Fullback Vonta Leach (ankle) and defensive end Pernell McPhee (thigh) were present and dressed out to practice for the first time this week during the portion open for media viewing, but Yanda (ankle) and Pollard (chest) haven’t practiced all week. Yanda is dealing with a significant ankle sprain while Pollard aggravated the sore ribs he’s played with for most of the season. Should neither Yanda nor Pollard play this weekend, Bobbie Williams and James Ihedigbo would presumably fill in at their positions. Linebackers Ray Lewis (triceps), Terrell Suggs (biceps), and Dannell Ellerbe (ankle), defensive lineman Arthur Jones (shoulder), tight end Ed Dickson (knee), and running backs Ray Rice (hip) and Bernard Pierce (back) were all present after all practiced in some capacity on Thursday. New offensive coordinator Caldwell planning to call plays from booth

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Holding court with the media for the first time since being promoted to the Ravens’ offensive coordinator position, Jim Caldwell plans to remain in the same spot during game days as he did as the quarterbacks coach. Caldwell worked from the upstairs booth during previous games and plans to remain there in his first game since succeeding Cam Cameron in the play-calling duties. Wide receivers coach Jim Hostler will then be on the sideline and relay Caldwell’s calls to quarterback Joe Flacco “That’s my plan, but obviously, that could change,” Caldwell said. “Whatever John [Harbaugh] wants me to do, that’s where I’ll be. At this point, that’s where I plan to be.” Calling plays from upstairs will not only give Caldwell a better view of what the defense is trying to do but will keep him away from the chaotic nature of an NFL sideline with players and staff members often chirping in the heat of the moment during game action. Ravens CB Asa Jackson suspended four games by NFL

Ravens rookie cornerback Asa Jackson has been suspended four games for a violation of the NFL’s performance enhancing drugs policy, the league announced Tuesday. The fifth-round pick from Cal Poly will begin his suspension immediately, meaning he will miss the final three games of the regular season and not be eligible for reinstatement until the day following the Ravens’ first potential postseason game. “We are aware of this matter, but due to the confidentiality of the program, we are unable to provide additional comment on the situation,” the Ravens said in a released statement. Jackson was inactive for the first 10 games before playing in the Ravens’ last three contests due to injury problems at the cornerback position. He has recorded one special-teams tackle but has yet to see any time as a defensive player. The Ravens hadn’t announced a corresponding roster move as of Tuesday afternoon.

Picking up the pieces from a difficult 31-28 overtime loss to the Redskins and the subsequent firing of offensive coordinator Cam Cameron on Monday, the Ravens still have a clear path to the postseason entering Week 15. Baltimore has done everything but mathematically clinch a trip to the postseason for the fifth straight year. Only one Powerball-like scenario exists in which the Ravens would miss the postseason that involves the Ravens losing their last three games, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati both winning in Weeks 15 and 17, and those two playing to a tie in their Week 16 meeting. The Ravens can clinch their second straight AFC North division title with a win over the Denver Broncos or losses by both the Steelers and the Bengals this week. Another extremely unlikely scenario exists in which the Raven could secure the division crown with a tie , a Pittsburgh loss or tie, and a Cincinnati loss or tie. Beating Peyton Manning and the red-hot Broncos won’t be an easy chore, but the Ravens will at least have their ticket for the postseason officially punched by way of a tie with Denver, a Cincinnati loss or tie, or a Pittsburgh loss or tie.

Yanda, McClain exit Sunday's loss with injuries

LANDOVER, Md. — The Ravens added injury to the insult of a disappointing 31-28 overtime loss to the Washington Redskins with the loss of two more starters on Sunday. Pro Bowl right guard Marshal Yanda exited in the fourth quarter with a right ankle injury and didn’t return while starting inside linebacker Jameel McClain left Sunday’s game in the third quarter with a neck injury and was sidelined for the remainder of the afternoon. Coach John Harbaugh confirmed X-rays were negative on McClain’s neck. “That’s good news,” Harbaugh said of the preliminary results. The immediate status of Yanda remains a mystery as there was much concern over his injured ankle following the game. The sixth-year lineman was helped to the sideline as he put no weight on his right leg before being carted to the locker room. Following the loss, Yanda left the Ravens locker room using crutches but was able to put some weight on the ankle as he moved to the team bus.
