Ravens sign veteran Chris Johnson to boost cornerback depth

With top cornerback Lardarius Webb already lost for the season and starter Jimmy Smith hampered with a groin injury, the Ravens boosted their secondary depth Tuesday with the signing of former Raiders cornerback Chris Johnson. To make room on the 53-man roster, Baltimore placed rookie running back Bobby Rainey on injured reserve with a knee injury. The 33-year-old Johnson was released in March after spending the last five seasons with the Oakland Raiders. He played in only four games last season before finishing the year on the non-football injury list as he dealt with the fatal shooting of his sister. Johnson made 29 starts in his five-year run with Oakland, intercepting eight passes and and forcing three fumbles. The cornerback was originally drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the seventh round of the 2003 draft but didn’t make his NFL debut until 2005 with the St. Louis Rams. With Smith’s status in question after he was unable to loosen up an injured groin to play in the 55-20 win over the Oakland Raiders in Week 10, the Ravens will likely elect to activate another cornerback against Pittsburgh this Sunday. Rookie Asa Jackson was the only cornerback on the 53-man

Ngata, J. Smith sit as Ravens cruise to convincing win over Oakland

Even though there was no need to look for a silver lining in the 55-20 victory over the Oakland Raiders, the Ravens were afforded the opportunity to rest injured defensive starters Haloti Ngata and Jimmy Smith a week ahead of their showdown with Pittsburgh next Sunday. Both players were listed as active but did not play as they sat with nagging injuries. However, the circumstances for each player were different as the Ravens made a concerted effort to sit the Pro Bowl defensive tackle but had to make an adjustment on the fly as Smith’s sore groin would not loosen up during pre-game warmups. “We decided to dress Haloti,” coach John Harbaugh said. “We are trying to get Haloti healthy. He didn’t practice this week much, but we felt like it would be smart to dress him because he is a difference-maker for us. We started the game out, and we were hoping that we wouldn’t have to play him, and it turned out that we didn’t have to.” Ngata had seen limited action from his normal workload in each of the Ravens’ last two games and admitted earlier in the week that lingering knee and shoulder injuries are limiting

Ngata, Yanda, B. Williams return to practice; Lewis visits Owings Mills facility

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — As the Ravens made final preparations for Sunday’s game against the Oakland Raiders, they received a special visitor to their Owings Mills facility as injured linebacker Ray Lewis greeted teammates and watched Friday’s practice. Baltimore also saw three more starters return to practice as guards Marshal Yanda (knee/ankle) and Bobbie Williams (ankle) and defensive tackle Haloti Ngata (knee/shoulder) were all present for the portion of practice open to the media. All three had missed practices on Wednesday and Thursday, but it remains to be seen what their level of activity was and whether they made it through practice without any setbacks. Safety Ed Reed (shoulder/knee) was also practicing for the second straight day as it appears there’s little question regarding his availability for Sunday’s game. He worked on a limited basis on Thursday. Defensive end Pernell McPhee was absent for the third straight practice and now appears likely to miss his second straight game as he continues to recover from knee and thigh injuries. As for Lewis, it remains to be seen whether he’ll address the media for the first time since suffering a torn triceps in his right arm in the Ravens’ 31-29 win over

Ravens tackle McKinnie reportedly facing lawsuit from Miami strip clubs

The financial problems continue for Ravens offensive tackle Bryant McKinnie as he reportedly faces a $375,000 lawsuit due to accumulated tabs at Miami strip clubs. Per an NBC Miami report, a lawsuit was filed by Charles “Pop” Young, the father of rap superstar Trick Daddy, for tabs accumulated by McKinnie at various strip clubs between February 2009 and September 2010. Young claims the money was borrowed by McKinnie but never repaid. Young is looking to recover the owed money plus interest as well as his legal costs through the lawsuit. McKinnie’s base salary was cut from $3.2 million to $2.2 million less than a week before the start of the regular season. The 33-year-old was also replaced as the starting left tackle by fourth-year lineman Michael Oher, which has hindered McKinnie’s chances of recovering the $1 million in lost salary through incentives that can be reached by playing in 50 percent of the Ravens’ offensive snaps. The lawsuit reportedly includes a promissory note claimed to be written by McKinnie on Oct. 1, 2010 that suggests Young loaned him the $375,000 in cash. “In the past we discussed this amount listed above once the NFL season starts and I began receiving
