Ravens linebacker McClain reportedly cleared to return to action

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) Though not eligible to return until after this week’s game against the Green Bay Packers, Ravens linebacker Jameel McClain appears to be moving closer to his return to football. Currently on the reserve physically unable to perform list as he recovers from a spinal cord contusion, McClain has been medically cleared to resume playing football, according to a report from The Sun. McClain suffered the injury last Dec. 9 against the Washington Redskins and hasn’t played since despite working out and attending meetings at the team’s Owings Mills facility. McClain may resume practicing as early as next week and will have a 21-day window in which to practice once he steps back on the practice field. However, the sixth-year linebacker can be placed back on the 53-man roster sooner than that if the Ravens deem him ready. “We’ll just keep taking the MRIs, and when the MRI is clear, then he’ll go,” said coach John Harbaugh in late August before McClain was placed on the reserve PUP list. “The MRI will be clear. There’s no question that at some point in time it

Osemele sidelined with back spasms early in first half

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) A Ravens offensive line already struggling through the first quarter of the season played a man down for much of their 26-23 win over the Dolphins on Sunday as left guard Kelechi Osemele was sidelined with back spasms. Osemele played in the Ravens’ opening offensive series before being removed for the remainder of the game. The team did not announce an injury for Osemele during the contest, but coach John Harbaugh offered clarity on his status following the win at Sun Life Stadium. “He was tightened up in pre-game and we tried to get him in the game,” Harbaugh said. “We had already set the 46-man roster. He went the first series. He couldn’t go, and that’s why we made the change to A.Q. Shipley.” The injury left the Ravens with just one healthy reserve lineman — rookie tackle Rick Wagner — as newly-acquired left tackle Eugene Monroe and third-year lineman Jah Reid were among the inactives in Week 5. The Ravens were also shorthanded at the wide receiver position as both Jacoby Jones (knee) and Marlon Brown (hamstring) were out with injuries.

Ravens part ways with disappointing 2012 fourth-round pick Thompson

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) In a move not very surprising after a very quiet preseason, the Ravens have parted ways with second-year safety Christian Thompson after the conclusion of his four-game suspension to begin the 2013 season. The 2012 fourth-round pick has been waived by general manager Ozzie Newsome despite the Ravens reportedly being granted a roster exemption for him through Week 5. Thompson appeared in seven games as a rookie and was suspended for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy, complicating his standing within the organization. Thompson made little impact during the preseason as he worked mostly with the third-team defense while other young safeties such as Anthony Levine, Brynden Trawick, and Omar Brown leapfrogged him on the depth chart. With the addition of former Bengals safety Jeromy Miles last week, the Ravens now have five safeties on their 53-man roster and two — Trawick and Brown — on their practice squad. The Ravens would have the option of signing Thompson to their practice squad should he clear waivers, but that doesn’t appear likely considering how much depth they already have at the position and how little

Webb, D. Thompson leave Sunday's loss with injuries

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) The sting of a 23-20 loss to the Bills wasn’t the only pain the Ravens endured Sunday as cornerback Lardarius Webb and wide receiver Deonte Thompson each left the game with injuries. Webb suffered what was described as a thigh injury, and coach John Harbaugh said they will know more about its severity on Monday. He left the game in the first half but was able to run and backpedal on the sideline, indicating that it shouldn’t keep him out for an extended period of time despite being held out for the remainder of the afternoon. Making his 2013 debut, Thompson performed well offensively as he caught four passes for 50 yards on five targets from quarterback Joe Flacco. However, the second-year wideout suffered a concussion while making a 33-yard reception in the fourth quarter when Bills safety Jim Leonhard was flagged for hitting a defenseless receiver. It was Thompson’s first action since spraining his foot in the preseason opener on Aug. 8. Linebacker Albert McClellan injured his shoulder and will undergo magnetic resonance imaging testing on Monday. He underwent shoulder surgery in

Rice practices for second straight day; Marlon Brown returns to field

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) OWINGS MILLS, Md. — The Ravens’ injury picture continued to improve on Thursday as running back Ray Rice practiced for the second straight day and starting wide receiver Marlon Brown returned to the field after a one-day absence. Rice (hip flexor strain) worked on a limited basis Wednesday and was moving very well during the open portion of Thursday’s practice, making it very likely that the Pro Bowl running back will return to action Sunday against the Buffalo Bills. The 26-year-old missed his first game since his 2008 rookie season this past Sunday. “Anytime that you have Ray [Rice] on the field … He’s a game-breaker. Not only in terms of being able to run the ball, which we all know and understand, but also in the passing game. He’s like lighting in a bottle. Having him certainly opens things up. You have to be concerned about him, and he feels good right now, so things are going well.” Brown did not participate on Wednesday and is dealing with a neck injury, but he was a full participant during Thursday’s practice as he’s

McKinnie, J. Jones offer accounts of party bus incident

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) After a party bus altercation in Washington, D.C. that gained national attention on Monday, Ravens left tackle Bryant McKinnie and wide receiver Jacoby Jones offered their thoughts Wednesday night on what really happened during the offensive lineman’s birthday celebration early Monday morning. McKinnie’s account doesn’t support the TMZ report saying Jones was struck in the head with a champagne bottle by an exotic dancer named Sweet Pea. The 34-year-old said on his weekly radio show with WNST.net that the TMZ source may have been paid for the story. “He didn’t get hit over the head with a bottle,” McKinnie said. “You had a girl who managed to find her way on the bus at the end of the night. She wasn’t invited.” Meanwhile, Jones took accountability for being present at the scene but insisted that there was no foul play on his part. The return specialist was ruled out for Sunday’s game as he continues to rehab the MCL injury he suffered in the season opener on Sept. 5. Coach John Harbaugh said Jones was fine on Monday and took part in his

Flacco fires back at Lewis' criticism of Ravens leadership

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Starting quarterback Joe Flacco wasn’t the first to defend the Ravens’ current leadership in response to former teammate Ray Lewis’ criticism earlier in the week, but his words rang the loudest on Wednesday. Responding to Lewis’ comments made on ESPN questioning the team’s current leaders in the aftermath of the party bus altercation that resulted in wide receiver Jacoby Jones being smashed in the head with a champagne bottle early Monday morning, Flacco defended the team’s recent track record when it comes to off-field behavior and downplayed how much leadership can influence what players do away from football. “It is what it is. Ray knows better than that,” Flacco said. “Things happen. I think we’re usually a pretty good team with stuff like that. If you look around the league, there are probably a lot of leadership problems then. So, like I said, Ray knows better.” No charges were filed and there is no evidence to suggest any player who attended left tackle Bryant McKinnie’s birthday celebration committed any crimes, making the story inconsequential in Flacco’s eyes. Coach John

Ravens claim former Bengals safety Miles off waivers

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) The Ravens claimed former Cincinnati Bengals safety Jeromy Miles off waivers on Monday. The fourth-year product from the University of Massachusetts played in the season opener for the Bengals before being waived, re-signed, and finally waived again on Saturday prior to the Bengals’ Week 3 meeting with Green Bay. At 6-foot-2 and 215 pounds, Miles has good size and will serve primarily in a special-teams capacity. According to The Sun, Baltimore waived rookie safety Brynden Trawick to make room for Miles on the 53-man roster. Trawick accidentally ran into Pro Bowl return specialist Jacoby Jones while the latter was trying to field a punt in the season opener. The collision sprained the medial collateral ligament in Jones’ right knee in the process. Miles has 49 career tackles and had spent his entire career with the Bengals after being signed as an undrafted free agent in 2010.

Ravens take another injury hit to defensive line

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) BALTIMORE — The Ravens sustained another blow to their defensive line in Sunday’s win over Houston as backup nose tackle Terrence Cody left the game with a knee injury in the first half and didn’t return. The fourth-year defensive lineman injured his left knee in the first quarter before being taken to the locker room. His absence left the Ravens with only one healthy reserve defensive lineman — second-year end DeAngelo Tyson — since veteran Marcus Spears was already filling in for the injured Chris Canty and rookie Brandon Williams was also inactive. Coach John Harbaugh acknowledged that Cody could be sidelined for a while, but he appeared to avoid a long-term injury. Outside linebackers Pernell McPhee and Courtney Upshaw saw time along the defensive line with the Ravens shorthanded for much of the game. “It does not look to be a long-term sprain,” Harbaugh said. “We’ll know more [Monday]. It could be a week, but more likely, it will be a couple weeks. We’ll see.” Backup running back Shaun Draughn suffered a high ankle sprain and reserve linebacker and special-teams contributor Albert

Texans left tackle Brown out for Sunday's game

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) The Houston Texans reportedly departed for Baltimore on Saturday morning without their Pro Bowl left tackle Duane Brown, who will miss Sunday’s game against the Ravens. Listed as questionable on the final injury report of the week, Brown is dealing with a significant turf toe injury and was not expected to play in Week 3. The injury snaps a streak of 78 consecutive starts for the 2012 Pro Bowl selection and creates a great opportunity for Ravens outside linebacker Terrell Suggs against backup Ryan Harris on Sunday. With Suggs matched up against Harris and right tackle Derek Newton faces the task of blocking Elvis Dumervil, the Ravens should be able to create pressure on Texans quarterback Matt Schaub from the edges. This could also force the Texans to use tight ends Owen Daniels and Garrett Graham as extra blockers more often, which would be a major help for a defense that’s struggled to cover tight ends early this season.
