Taylor evaluated for potential concussion; Webb, Yanda receive first preseason action

The Ravens lost their first preseason game of the summer Thursday night but appeared to make it through the 34-27 loss to the Carolina Panthers with relative health. Coach John Harbaugh reported only one injury following the game as backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor left the game in the fourth quarter and was evaluated for a potential concussion. Third-string quarterback Caleb Hanie replaced Taylor after he was taken to the locker room for further tests. “He went through the concussion protocol there, so we’ll just have to play that one by ear, have not heard anything on that,” Harbaugh said. “Other than that, we came out healthy. [I’m] very pleased about that.” Cornerback Lardarius Webb and right guard Marshal Yanda made their preseason debuts and reported no setbacks following the game as Webb played an outside cornerback spot in the nickel package and Yanda played the first couple series with the starting offensive line. Just over a week before NFL teams must trim their preseason rosters from 90 players to 75, the Ravens have released veteran cornerback Chris Johnson. Reportedly struggling to deal with migraine headaches over the last couple weeks, the 33-year-old had missed a sizable portion of training camp and missed last Thursday’s preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons. Johnson was battling young cornerbacks such as Asa Jackson, Marc Anthony, and Moe Lee for a place on the 53-man roster. Signed last November to sure up a roster that had lost cornerbacks Lardarius Webb and Jimmy Smith due to injuries, Johnson played in five games, making seven tackles and forcing a fumble. Johnson was active for the AFC Championship against the New England Patriots but did not play in the other three games of the Ravens’ run to a Super Bowl championship. Johnson signed a one-year deal this offseason to remain with the Ravens, but he was never considered a lock to make the regular-season roster.

Ravens escape second preseason game without any serious injuries

After the Ravens’ 27-23 preseason win over the Atlanta Falcons, head coach John Harbaugh painted a positive picture from a health standpoint. Outside linebacker Elvis Dumervil suffered a minor groin injury and rookie safety Matt Elam tweaked his ankle, but the head coach described both as “fine” after the game. Dumervil also downplayed any significance to his ailment in the Baltimore locker room. “Nothing really injury-wise came out of this game,” Harbaugh said of the injury picture. “So that’s a positive.” According to The Sun, reserve outside linebacker Adrian Hamilton injured his wrist and will have further tests on it Friday. Rookie defensive tackle Brandon Williams was also shaken up in the second half of Thursday’s game but returned to action soon thereafter. Last week against Tampa Bay, the Ravens lost wide receiver Deonte Thompson (ankle), running back Bernard Pierce (knee), and defensive tackle Marcus Spears (hamstring) and only Pierce has returned to practice at this point.

Still sidelined as he recovers from a spinal cord contusion suffered last December, veteran linebacker Jameel McClain is reportedly taking a smaller salary to remain with the Baltimore Ravens this season. According to Tom Pelissero of USA Today, the Ravens have reduced McClain’s $3 million base salary for the 2013 season to just $1.5 million, offering an additional $1.5 million in cap savings for general manager Ozzie Newsome. The report also indicated that McClain’s projected 2014 salary of $3.2 million was unchanged. Baltimore now has roughly $5.5 million in salary cap space, which is important considering Newsome will keep his eyes on the market for more wide receiver help between now and the start of the regular season. The Ravens signed veteran slot receiver Brandon Stokley to a one-year minimum salary benefit contract earlier in the week, which pays him a $940,000 salary but carries only a $620,000 cap charge. Veteran tight end Dallas Clark also signed a  one-year minimum salary benefit contract. Thompson, Pierce suffer injuries in preseason opener

In what was otherwise a satisfying 44-16 victory in the preseason opener, the Ravens suffered two injuries of note against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday night. The most concerning at this point appears to happen to wide receiver Deonte Thompson, who injured his left ankle making a 5-yard reception in the second quarter. The second-year wideout was in visible pain as he limped to the sidelined and was tended to by members of the training staff. Reports from Tampa indicated he was seen in a walking boot following the game. The second notable injury was to Bernard Pierce as the backup running back scored a 20-yard touchdown early in the second quarter. Pierce took a helmet shot to the hip as he was crossing the goal line and landed awkwardly, appearing to tweak his knee. He was limping noticeably until he jogged to the sideline. “We look pretty good right now,” said head coach John Harbaugh, who didn’t name any specific injuries. “We’ll have some things we’ll have to see about [Friday] – X-rays, MRIs, things like that. Pro Bowl running back Ray Rice was present and working after leaving the field for the final 20 minutes of Monday’s practice with what was described as a turned ankle by coach John Harbaugh. Inside linebacker Daryl Smith and defensive tackle Terrence Cody were both practicing after receiving a day off on Monday from the Baltimore coach. Players absent from the field Tuesday included tight ends Ed Dickson (hamstring) and Dennis Pitta (hip), wide receiver David Reed (groin), guard Marshal Yanda (shoulder), offensive lineman Ryan Jensen (foot), defensive end Kapron Lewis-Moore (knee), linebacker Jameel McClain (neck), and defensive backs Chris Johnson and Omar Brown. Ravens release first depth chart of summer

With the Ravens kicking off the preseason in Tampa next Thursday night, the first depth chart of the summer has been released. It’s very important to understand the estimated depth chart is a creation of the public relations staff based on observations during training camp practices and not a creation of head coach John Harbaugh, meaning the coaching staff’s actual depth chart could be different. That being said, it is interesting to see defensive tackle Haloti Ngata listed as the starting nose tackle — he’s taken nearly all of his snaps at that spot with the starting defense in camp — and Courtney Upshaw and Elvis Dumervil listed as co-starters at the strongside linebacker position. Upshaw has played extensively with the first unit in the base defense while Dumervil has looked more like a situational pass rusher at this early stage of camp. Veteran Jameel McClain is still listed as a starting inside linebacker despite the fact that he remains out indefinitely and on the physically unable to perform list, but free-agent acquisition Daryl Smith is listed as the starting “Mike” inside linebacker
