Osemele returns to practice field on limited basis Monday

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — The Ravens saw a key member of their starting offensive line return to the practice field Monday as left guard Kelechi Osemele practiced for the first time since late last week. The second-year lineman strained his right hamstring in the first full-squad workout of the summer on Thursday and was sidelined through the weekend. Only right guard Marshal Yanda (shoulder) remains out of action among the projected five starters along the line, but the two-time Pro Bowl selection passed his physical over the weekend, a sure sign that he is moving closer to returning to practice after offseason shoulder surgery. Osemele took part in a very limited capacity, only working during positional drills before sitting out the team portions of practice. “It’s still early. We just want to make sure we have everybody healthy,” Osemele said after practice. “We don’t want to lose any of our starters right now. Today went well, it felt great. The first-day drama surrounding left tackle Bryant McKinnie has appeared to resolve itself to some degree for the Ravens. According to WNST.net colleague Brett Dickinson, the veteran offensive lineman returned to the practice field on the second day of full-squad workouts after being held out Thursday by coach John Harbaugh, who told reporters McKinnie was “too heavy” to practice. The 33-year-old was believed to be carrying 10 pounds more than the team preferred, but the overall sense in Owings Mills was that McKinnie would be able to shed the weight quickly. McKinnie’s return was good news because starting left guard Kelechi Osemele sat out Friday’s practice as he tweaked his hamstring a day earlier. The second-year lineman was playing in McKinnie’s place at left tackle before he was stretched out on the sideline and was seen with an ice pack on the back of his right leg while watching the second half of the workout. Raising eyebrows after failing his first attempt at the conditioning test earlier this week, Ravens wide receiver Jacoby Jones has reportedly passed it on the second try. According to an NFL Network report, the 29-year-old is now eligible to practice as the Ravens gather for their first full-team workout of training camp on Thursday afternoon. John Harbaugh didn’t sound overly concerned about Jones’ hiccup when asked about it on Tuesday, expressing confidence that the Pro Bowl return specialist would pass it when given a second opportunity. However, the Ravens coach also wasn’t giving Jones a free pass after he was placed on the non-football injury list, which clearly sent a message to the “Dancing With the Stars” contestant. “He’s really close on it,” Harbaugh said. “Never make any excuses for him — he should pass it — but he was traveling and things like that. Orioles reportedly sign 24-year-old Cuban outfielder Alvarez

With 26-year-old outfielder Henry Urrutia making his major league debut this weekend, the Orioles are wasting no time in restocking their minor-league system with a Cuban outfield prospect. According to Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com, 24-year-old outfielder Dariel Alvarez has agreed in principle to a deal with the Orioles worth $800,000. He met with team officials in Sarasota this week and the deal could be completed as early as this weekend. The right-handed hitter defected from Cuba last year and went on to play professionally in Mexico. He was deemed a free agent by Major League Baseball earlier this year, but he reportedly considered a return to his native country after his initial contract demands weren’t met by any club. Though his overall approach isn’t considered as polished as that of Urrutia, many scouts believe the younger Alvarez projects to have more power at the major-league level if he can refine his swing in the minors.

Orioles first baseman Davis to hit cleanup in All-Star Game

Leading the majors with 37 home runs made Orioles first baseman Chris Davis an easy choice to hit cleanup for the American League in the All-Star Game and AL manager Jim Leyland agreed. Appearing in his first Midsummer Classic after tying Reggie Jackson’s AL record for most homers before the All-Star break, Davis will hit in the fourth spot instead of more established sluggers such as Miguel Cabrera, David Ortiz, and Jose Bautista. McFarland to make first major league start against Yankees Friday night

BALTIMORE — Orioles manager Buck Showalter offered a changeup to nearly everyone by announcing left-handed pitcher T.J. McFarland will make his first major league start Friday against the Yankees instead of fellow rookie Kevin Gausman. The assumption all week had been the latter would take the mound against New York after he was recalled Monday to pitch out of the bullpen if needed, but Showalter officially revealed his plan to go with McFarland following the Orioles’ 7-3 win over Cleveland on Thursday night. “It’s his turn. He’s on four days of rest,” Showalter said. “He’s ready to go 80-plus pitches tomorrow, at least, and hopefully pitch five or six innings. The Yankees will have something to say about that. We’re in a position to cover whatever innings. We wanted to see how we did tonight.” Gausman will be available to pitch out of the bullpen and could be a decent bet to receive some work on Friday with McFarland’s pitch count likely limiting him to four or five innings at most. The Orioles figure to send several players to next month’s All-Star Game in New York, but their minor-league system will also be represented as Double-A outfielder Henry Urrutia and Single-A pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez have been selected to play in the Futures Game. Both players will play for the World Team in the minor-league contest taking place July 14 at Citi Field. Urrutia, a Cuban outfielder in the midst of his first year in the Orioles system, was also chosen to represent the Baysox in the Eastern League All-Star Game. He is hitting .365 with seven home runs and 37 RBIs and is rumored to be heading to Triple-A Norfolk in the near future. At 26, the defector could arrive in Baltimore sooner rather than later as he’s impressed with his hitting prowess and has improved defensively in his time with Bowie. Rodriguez, a 20-year-old from Venezuela, is 6-4 with a 2.85 earned run average in 14 starts for Frederick this season.
