Ravens sign veteran wide receiver, place Campanaro on active PUP list

Less than a week before their first full-squad practice of training camp, the Ravens have made a series of tweaks to their 90-man preseason roster.
After placing the oft-injured Michael Campanaro on the active physically unable to perform list to begin the summer, Baltimore announced the signing of journeyman wide receiver Griff Whalen, who has spent time with New England, San Diego, Miami, and Indianapolis in his five-year career. Campanaro has been recovering from a toe injury sustained during spring organized team activities and is eligible to return to practice at any point. Head coach John Harbaugh had indicated last month that Campanaro would be ready to go for the start of training camp.
The Ravens also signed undrafted rookie cornerback Reggie Porter on Friday.
Whalen, 27, brings some experience to the table as he’s played in 41 NFL games over the last four seasons, catching 47 passes for 509 yards. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Stanford product also has experience as a return specialist, an area of need for the Ravens entering camp.
Whalen and Campanaro will be among those competing for a potential roster spot behind the projected top four of Jeremy Maclin, Mike Wallace, Breshad Perriman, and Chris Moore at the wide receiver position.
In addition to Campanaro, cornerback Tavon Young (knee) and defensive lineman Patrick Ricard were also placed on the active PUP list. Of course, Young suffered a torn ACL on June 1 and is not expected to play this season, but teams may not place players on injured reserve before the end of the preseason without first subjecting them to waivers, which explains Young’s roster status.
Fifth-round offensive lineman Jermaine Eluemunor was placed on the non-football injury list on Thursday, but he has since passed his conditioning test and has been cleared to begin practicing with other rookies.
The Ravens have also waived defensive back Daniel Henry and wide receiver Aaron Bailey with injury designations over the last two days.
