After two strong performances against Winston-Salem State and Florida Atlantic, Maryland guard Greivis Vasquez was named ACC Player of the Week on Monday.

While his critics will remind everyone of his struggles in the Maui Invitational and against Villanova, the eccentric Vasquez has always been streaky during his four-year stay in College Park. Following the win against Florida Atlantic, coach Gary Williams suggested Vasquez looked โ€œflatโ€ in the early stages of the season after going through the NBA Draft process and playing competitively throughout the summer.

This marks the fifth time Vasquez has received the honor from the conference.

Hereโ€™s the official release from the ACC:

GREENSBORO, N.C. โ€“ Marylandโ€™s Greivis Vasquez has been named ACC Player of the Week, while Miamiโ€™s Durand Scott earned ACC Rookie of the Week honors.

Vasquez averaged 26.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 8.0 assists while leading the Terps to victories over Winston-Salem State and Florida Atlantic. For the week, the Caracas, Venezuela, native shot .583 (21-for-36) from the floor, including .600 (6-for-10) from behind the arc.

In earning the Player of the Week Award for the fifth time in his career, Vasquez had a double-double in Tuesdayโ€™s 98-55 win over Winston-Salem State with a season-high 27 points and 11 assists. The senior guard closed out the week with a 26-point, eight-rebound and five assist effort in Marylandโ€™s 72-59 victory over Florida Atlantic Sunday.

Vasquez has increased his offensive production in the month of December. The effort against FAU was his third straight game and his fourth in the last five games with at least 20 points. Vasquez has raised his scoring average from 7.5 to 15.9 points per game over the past seven games โ€“ all of which have had him scoring in double figures (20.7 ppg in his last 7 games, 24.3 ppg in his last 3 games).
