I was looking for a forum to let my dad know exactly how much he means and has meant to me throughout my life. WNST provided that forum for me and I greatly appreciate the chance. Geez…24 years!! Has it been that long???
I would’ve had NO GUESS who hit that ball although I remember the video and the Kittle’s tirade VERY well. And it came up when he came here for his cup of coffee a few years later…I was sitting in the RIGHT FIELD bleachers that day, way up top!
Of course, Bob Haynie probably knew RIGHT AWAY that it was Roenicke…

That was a great idea about the baseball memories contest. However, there was one MAJOR mistake in the winner’s story. It’s no big deal really but I thought I would point it out to you. When I first heard the guy’s story on the radio this morning, I clearly remembered the play and WHO hit that ball. I recall Kittle moving back on the warning track and then beer flying out of the stands above (I was watching the game at home). Gary Roenicke hit that baseball not Eddie Murray as the guy said in his story. As a matter of fact, Murray went hitless in both playoff games at home in 1983 against the Sox. I knew it was Roenicke because he doubled and homered in game 2 and it was the double in the top of the 2nd inning that involved Kittle getting doused in beer. I’ve seen this replay a few times before and I clearly remembered Roenicke hitting that ball so I decided to google the 1983 playoffs and that confirmed what I thought all along. I’ve attached a brief summary of the game below that I copied from my research. I’m surprised no one at WNST remembered Roenicke hitting that ball not Murray, although that game did take place almost 25 years ago. My research also confirmed thatMurray went hitless in both games in Baltimore. Again, it’s no big deal, the guy’s story and his sharing those memories with his Dad is what counts the most.
