Ravens take another injury hit to defensive line

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) BALTIMORE — The Ravens sustained another blow to their defensive line in Sunday’s win over Houston as backup nose tackle Terrence Cody left the game with a knee injury in the first half and didn’t return. The fourth-year defensive lineman injured his left knee in the first quarter before being taken to the locker room. His absence left the Ravens with only one healthy reserve defensive lineman — second-year end DeAngelo Tyson — since veteran Marcus Spears was already filling in for the injured Chris Canty and rookie Brandon Williams was also inactive. Coach John Harbaugh acknowledged that Cody could be sidelined for a while, but he appeared to avoid a long-term injury. Outside linebackers Pernell McPhee and Courtney Upshaw saw time along the defensive line with the Ravens shorthanded for much of the game. “It does not look to be a long-term sprain,” Harbaugh said. “We’ll know more [Monday]. It could be a week, but more likely, it will be a couple weeks. We’ll see.” Backup running back Shaun Draughn suffered a high ankle sprain and reserve linebacker and special-teams contributor Albert

Texans left tackle Brown out for Sunday's game

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) The Houston Texans reportedly departed for Baltimore on Saturday morning without their Pro Bowl left tackle Duane Brown, who will miss Sunday’s game against the Ravens. Listed as questionable on the final injury report of the week, Brown is dealing with a significant turf toe injury and was not expected to play in Week 3. The injury snaps a streak of 78 consecutive starts for the 2012 Pro Bowl selection and creates a great opportunity for Ravens outside linebacker Terrell Suggs against backup Ryan Harris on Sunday. With Suggs matched up against Harris and right tackle Derek Newton faces the task of blocking Elvis Dumervil, the Ravens should be able to create pressure on Texans quarterback Matt Schaub from the edges. This could also force the Texans to use tight ends Owen Daniels and Garrett Graham as extra blockers more often, which would be a major help for a defense that’s struggled to cover tight ends early this season.

Rice absent from practice for second straight day

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) OWINGS MILLS, Md. — A day after six players missed practice, the Ravens didn’t receive much better news on Thursday as Pro Bowl running back Ray Rice was absent once again while continuing to recover from a hip flexor strain. Coach John Harbaugh said Monday that Rice would not need to practice to potentially play in Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans, but his continued absence makes it apparent that backup Bernard Pierce will play a bigger role in the offense even if Rice is available. Offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell acknowledged this reality prior to Thursday’s practice after Pierce carried the ball 19 times for 57 yards and a touchdown against Cleveland last Sunday. “He’s been a guy that’s run extremely hard,” Caldwell said. “In particular, when you look at our situation right now, he’s going to have to carry a little bit more of a load, but we fully expect him to be able to step up and do the job.” Defensive end Chris Canty (groin), linebacker Arthur Brown (pectoral strain), offensive lineman Ryan Jensen (foot), and wide receiver Jacoby Jones (knee)

Rice's hip injury headlines list of health concerns from win over Cleveland

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) BALTIMORE — The Ravens came away with a 14-6 win over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, but with it came a new list of health concerns topped by the status of running back Ray Rice. Rice went down with a left hip injury in the fourth quarter on a non-contact play and was immediately taken to the locker room where he was diagnosed with a hip flexor strain, according to coach John Harbaugh. Backup Bernard Pierce handled the workload the rest of the way to help the Ravens improve to 1-1 on the season. Baltimore was optimistic after the game about Rice, who wasn’t scheduled to undergo a magnetic resonance imaging as of Sunday afternoon. However, it had to be a scary scene for Harbaugh and the Ravens to see one of their best offensive players go down in pain without being touched. “I don’t have the ‘scary gauge’ on me right now,” said Harbaugh when asked to express how he felt upon seeing the injury occur. “He might’ve gone down to protect himself, too. That’s just something that we’ll have to see.

No changes to Ravens' injury report for Thursday

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) OWINGS MILLS, Md. — There were no changes to the Ravens’ official injury report for Thursday as right tackle Michael Oher continues to look like a good bet to play against the Cleveland Browns in the home opener. The fifth-year lineman was a full participant for the second straight day as he continues to receive treatment for the sprained right ankle sustained in the season-opening loss to Denver. He appeared to be moving well as he took his normal spot with the offensive line in the portion of practice open to the media. “[He’s an] unusual guy – extremely tough, extremely dedicated and disciplined,” offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell said. “He has a very, very high tolerance for pain. He’s been able to get back out. He’s obviously committed to this team, and he’s working at it extremely hard.” Defensive tackle Arthur Jones was a limited participant once again after being cleared to begin practicing earlier in the week. The lineman told reporters he had been dealing with an irregular heartbeat since the third preseason game on Aug. 22. The biggest question facing Jones

Ravens to try out former Giants tight end Ballard on Monday

Desperate to improve their production at the tight end position, the Ravens will reportedly try out Jake Ballard. The former New York Giants tight end was waived by the New England Patriots at the end of the preseason after missing the entire 2012 season due to the torn ACL he suffered in Super Bowl XLVI. Prior to the injury, Ballard had a good 2011 season with the Giants, catching 38 passes for 604 yards and four touchdowns in 14 games. According to FOX Sports’ Mike Garafolo, Ballard will work out for the Ravens in Owings Mills on Monday. Ballard struggled in the preseason as the Patriots were hoping he could help fill the void left behind by Aaron Hernandez and the currently-injured Rob Gronkowski. The Ravens have struggled to find production at the tight end position following the long-term hip injury to starter Dennis Pitta in late July. Fourth-year tight end Ed Dickson struggled to catch the football several times and veteran Dallas Clark dropped a sure touchdown right before halftime in the season-opening 49-27 loss to Denver. Baltimore also signed veteran Visanthe Shiancoe during training camp but decided to cut him on Aug. 25. With the Ravens struggling to

Ravens lose J. Jones, Oher to injuries in first half

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) The Ravens suffered significant losses to both their offense and special teams units in their embarrassing season-opening loss to the Broncos. Return specialist and wide receiver Jacoby Jones suffered a knee injury in the second quarter while right tackle Michael Oher hurt his right ankle later in the quarter. Neither player returned to the game as the Ravens fell 49-27 to lose their first season opener in the John Harbaugh era. Jones was injured trying to field a punt when rookie safety Brynden Trawick inexplicably ran into him in the midst of a full sprint. After limping off the field, he was taken to the locker room for further examination and was wearing street clothes on the sideline during the second half. Jones told reporters after the game that he will undergo a magnetic resonance imaging on Friday. Oher hurt his right ankle when right guard Marshal Yanda rolled into his leg, forcing rookie fifth-round pick Rick Wagner to enter the game at right tackle. The Ravens only went with two active reserve linemen — reserve center A.Q. Shipley and Wagner — as

A. Jones undergoing tests for undisclosed illness, McPhee limited Tuesday

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) OWINGS MILLS, Md. — There were no changes to practice attendance for the Ravens on Tuesday as they continued preparations for their season-opening game against the Denver Broncos. Already ruled out for Thursday night’s game at Sports Authority Field at Mile High, defensive tackle Arthur Jones (undisclosed illness) was once again missing from the field and hasn’t practiced since playing in the Ravens’ third preseason game on Aug. 22. Coach John Harbaugh reiterated Tuesday that the health issue is not related to football and once again deferred to Jones to decide what details he eventually discloses. “It’s not anything that’s like life-threatening or anything like that, but it’s non-football related,” Harbaugh said. “We’ve just got to get some tests done to make sure he’s OK. Until the tests come out the right way, he’s not going to be able to play. It’s something that I’ve been told now they can’t tell you how long it will be. It could be a week; it could be indefinitely. We don’t think it’s going to be the second part of it.” According to the Ravens coach,

Ravens add former Towson receiver Sheppard, running back to practice squad

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) OWINGS MILLS, Md. — The Ravens completed their practice squad Monday by re-signing former Towson wide receiver Gerrard Sheppard and adding running back Jonas Gray. Baltimore released undrafted offensive lineman Jordan Devey a day after adding him to their developmental squad. Sheppard was with the Ravens throughout the offseason and summer before he was waived on Aug. 25, but the McDonough grad left quite an impression on coach John Harbaugh, making his inclusion on the practice squad less surprising. He did not record a catch in the preseason. “These are men with dreams and aspirations who work really hard, [like] a Gerrard Sheppard — [a] local guy from Towson who just did a great job for us,” Harbaugh said in late August. “He is a really talented, hard-working, good person, and no matter what he does in life, he’s going to be amazingly successful.” Gray was with the Miami Dolphins in the preseason after spending his college career at Notre Dame. As a senior with the Fighting Irish, Gray carried the ball 114 times for 791 yards and 12 touchdowns. In 40 rushing
