Thompson, Pierce suffer injuries in preseason opener

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) In what was otherwise a satisfying 44-16 victory in the preseason opener, the Ravens suffered two injuries of note against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday night. The most concerning at this point appears to happen to wide receiver Deonte Thompson, who injured his left ankle making a 5-yard reception in the second quarter. The second-year wideout was in visible pain as he limped to the sidelined and was tended to by members of the training staff. Reports from Tampa indicated he was seen in a walking boot following the game. The second notable injury was to Bernard Pierce as the backup running back scored a 20-yard touchdown early in the second quarter. Pierce took a helmet shot to the hip as he was crossing the goal line and landed awkwardly, appearing to tweak his knee. He was limping noticeably until he jogged to the sideline. “We look pretty good right now,” said head coach John Harbaugh, who didn’t name any specific injuries. “We’ll have some things we’ll have to see about [Friday] – X-rays, MRIs, things like that. So we’ll have to

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) OWINGS MILLS, Md. — The Ravens conducted their final open practice Tuesday before their preseason opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and saw three players return to the practice field. Pro Bowl running back Ray Rice was present and working after leaving the field for the final 20 minutes of Monday’s practice with what was described as a turned ankle by coach John Harbaugh. Inside linebacker Daryl Smith and defensive tackle Terrence Cody were both practicing after receiving a day off on Monday from the Baltimore coach. Players absent from the field Tuesday included tight ends Ed Dickson (hamstring) and Dennis Pitta (hip), wide receiver David Reed (groin), guard Marshal Yanda (shoulder), offensive lineman Ryan Jensen (foot), defensive end Kapron Lewis-Moore (knee), linebacker Jameel McClain (neck), and defensive backs Chris Johnson and Omar Brown. Johnson was believed to be one of the veterans receiving a day off on Monday but wasn’t present for the special-teams portion of practice. Brown left the field early with an undisclosed injury on Monday and didn’t return. Harbaugh wouldn’t specify their injuries following Tuesday’s practice, only describing them

Ravens release first depth chart of summer

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) With the Ravens kicking off the preseason in Tampa next Thursday night, the first depth chart of the summer has been released. It’s very important to understand the estimated depth chart is a creation of the public relations staff based on observations during training camp practices and not a creation of head coach John Harbaugh, meaning the coaching staff’s actual depth chart could be different. That being said, it is interesting to see defensive tackle Haloti Ngata listed as the starting nose tackle — he’s taken nearly all of his snaps at that spot with the starting defense in camp — and Courtney Upshaw and Elvis Dumervil listed as co-starters at the strongside linebacker position. Upshaw has played extensively with the first unit in the base defense while Dumervil has looked more like a situational pass rusher at this early stage of camp. Veteran Jameel McClain is still listed as a starting inside linebacker despite the fact that he remains out indefinitely and on the physically unable to perform list, but free-agent acquisition Daryl Smith is listed as the starting “Mike” inside linebacker

Osemele returns to practice field on limited basis Monday

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) OWINGS MILLS, Md. — The Ravens saw a key member of their starting offensive line return to the practice field Monday as left guard Kelechi Osemele practiced for the first time since late last week. The second-year lineman strained his right hamstring in the first full-squad workout of the summer on Thursday and was sidelined through the weekend. Only right guard Marshal Yanda (shoulder) remains out of action among the projected five starters along the line, but the two-time Pro Bowl selection passed his physical over the weekend, a sure sign that he is moving closer to returning to practice after offseason shoulder surgery. Osemele took part in a very limited capacity, only working during positional drills before sitting out the team portions of practice. “It’s still early. We just want to make sure we have everybody healthy,” Osemele said after practice. “We don’t want to lose any of our starters right now. Today went well, it felt great. It was good to be out there with the guys again and get all the mental things going on.” Others missing from Monday’s workout

McKinnie returns to practice, Osemele sits out Friday

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) The first-day drama surrounding left tackle Bryant McKinnie has appeared to resolve itself to some degree for the Ravens. According to WNST.net colleague Brett Dickinson, the veteran offensive lineman returned to the practice field on the second day of full-squad workouts after being held out Thursday by coach John Harbaugh, who told reporters McKinnie was “too heavy” to practice. The 33-year-old was believed to be carrying 10 pounds more than the team preferred, but the overall sense in Owings Mills was that McKinnie would be able to shed the weight quickly. McKinnie’s return was good news because starting left guard Kelechi Osemele sat out Friday’s practice as he tweaked his hamstring a day earlier. The second-year lineman was playing in McKinnie’s place at left tackle before he was stretched out on the sideline and was seen with an ice pack on the back of his right leg while watching the second half of the workout. The injury was not believed to be serious and his absence on Friday was likely precautionary. Other players missing from Friday’s practice included wide receiver Marlon Brown, cornerback

Jacoby Jones passes conditioning test second time around

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) Raising eyebrows after failing his first attempt at the conditioning test earlier this week, Ravens wide receiver Jacoby Jones has reportedly passed it on the second try. According to an NFL Network report, the 29-year-old is now eligible to practice as the Ravens gather for their first full-team workout of training camp on Thursday afternoon. John Harbaugh didn’t sound overly concerned about Jones’ hiccup when asked about it on Tuesday, expressing confidence that the Pro Bowl return specialist would pass it when given a second opportunity. However, the Ravens coach also wasn’t giving Jones a free pass after he was placed on the non-football injury list, which clearly sent a message to the “Dancing With the Stars” contestant. “He’s really close on it,” Harbaugh said. “Never make any excuses for him — he should pass it — but he was traveling and things like that. We’ll see. It’s up to him. It’s his job to do. That’s the fact. Facts are stubborn things.” Jones will compete for Baltimore’s second starting receiver job opposite Torrey Smith this season. The Ravens announced Thursday morning that

Orioles reportedly sign 24-year-old Cuban outfielder Alvarez

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) With 26-year-old outfielder Henry Urrutia making his major league debut this weekend, the Orioles are wasting no time in restocking their minor-league system with a Cuban outfield prospect. According to Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com, 24-year-old outfielder Dariel Alvarez has agreed in principle to a deal with the Orioles worth $800,000. He met with team officials in Sarasota this week and the deal could be completed as early as this weekend. The right-handed hitter defected from Cuba last year and went on to play professionally in Mexico. He was deemed a free agent by Major League Baseball earlier this year, but he reportedly considered a return to his native country after his initial contract demands weren’t met by any club. Though his overall approach isn’t considered as polished as that of Urrutia, many scouts believe the younger Alvarez projects to have more power at the major-league level if he can refine his swing in the minors.

Orioles first baseman Davis to hit cleanup in All-Star Game

(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!) Leading the majors with 37 home runs made Orioles first baseman Chris Davis an easy choice to hit cleanup for the American League in the All-Star Game and AL manager Jim Leyland agreed. Appearing in his first Midsummer Classic after tying Reggie Jackson’s AL record for most homers before the All-Star break, Davis will hit in the fourth spot instead of more established sluggers such as Miguel Cabrera, David Ortiz, and Jose Bautista. The 27-year-old slugger homered in each of the final four games prior to the break and was the leading vote-getter for the All-Star Game being played Tuesday night at Citi Field in New York. Of course, Davis won’t be the only Orioles representative in the starting lineup as center fielder Adam Jones will hit seventh and shortstop J.J. Hardy will hit in the No. 9 spot for the AL. The Orioles had more starters than any club in either league before National League manager Bruce Bochy named Rockies outfielder Michael Cuddyer as his designated hitter, giving the Rockies three starters. Third baseman Manny Machado and late-addition pitcher Chris Tillman will
