No changes to Ravens' injury report for Thursday

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — There were no changes to the Ravens’ official injury report for Thursday as right tackle Michael Oher continues to look like a good bet to play against the Cleveland Browns in the home opener. The fifth-year lineman was a full participant for the second straight day as he continues to receive treatment for the sprained right ankle sustained in the season-opening loss to Denver. He appeared to be moving well as he took his normal spot with the offensive line in the portion of practice open to the media. “[He’s an] unusual guy – extremely tough, extremely dedicated and disciplined,” offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell said. “He has a very, very high tolerance for pain. He’s been able to get back out. He’s obviously committed to this team, and he’s working at it extremely hard.” Defensive tackle Arthur Jones was a limited participant once again after being cleared to begin practicing earlier in the week. Ravens to try out former Giants tight end Ballard on Monday

Desperate to improve their production at the tight end position, the Ravens will reportedly try out Jake Ballard. The former New York Giants tight end was waived by the New England Patriots at the end of the preseason after missing the entire 2012 season due to the torn ACL he suffered in Super Bowl XLVI. Prior to the injury, Ballard had a good 2011 season with the Giants, catching 38 passes for 604 yards and four touchdowns in 14 games. According to FOX Sports’ Mike Garafolo, Ballard will work out for the Ravens in Owings Mills on Monday. Ballard struggled in the preseason as the Patriots were hoping he could help fill the void left behind by Aaron Hernandez and the currently-injured Rob Gronkowski. The Ravens have struggled to find production at the tight end position following the long-term hip injury to starter Dennis Pitta in late July. Ravens lose J. Jones, Oher to injuries in first half

The Ravens suffered significant losses to both their offense and special teams units in their embarrassing season-opening loss to the Broncos. Return specialist and wide receiver Jacoby Jones suffered a knee injury in the second quarter while right tackle Michael Oher hurt his right ankle later in the quarter. Neither player returned to the game as the Ravens fell 49-27 to lose their first season opener in the John Harbaugh era. Jones was injured trying to field a punt when rookie safety Brynden Trawick inexplicably ran into him in the midst of a full sprint. After limping off the field, he was taken to the locker room for further examination and was wearing street clothes on the sideline during the second half. OWINGS MILLS, Md. — There were no changes to practice attendance for the Ravens on Tuesday as they continued preparations for their season-opening game against the Denver Broncos. Already ruled out for Thursday night’s game at Sports Authority Field at Mile High, defensive tackle Arthur Jones (undisclosed illness) was once again missing from the field and hasn’t practiced since playing in the Ravens’ third preseason game on Aug. 22. Coach John Harbaugh reiterated Tuesday that the health issue is not related to football and once again deferred to Jones to decide what details he eventually discloses. “It’s not anything that’s like life-threatening or anything like that, but it’s non-football related,” Harbaugh said. “We’ve just got to get some tests done to make sure he’s OK. OWINGS MILLS, Md. — The Ravens completed their practice squad Monday by re-signing former Towson wide receiver Gerrard Sheppard and adding running back Jonas Gray. Baltimore released undrafted offensive lineman Jordan Devey a day after adding him to their developmental squad. Sheppard was with the Ravens throughout the offseason and summer before he was waived on Aug. 25, but the McDonough grad left quite an impression on coach John Harbaugh, making his inclusion on the practice squad less surprising. He did not record a catch in the preseason. “These are men with dreams and aspirations who work really hard, [like] a Gerrard Sheppard — [a] local guy from Towson who just did a great job for us,” Harbaugh said in late August. “He is a really talented, hard-working, good person, and no matter what he does in life, he’s going to be amazingly successful.” Gray was with the Miami Dolphins in the preseason after spending his college career at Notre Dame. The Ravens filled their open roster spot Sunday by claiming veteran linebacker Robert James off waivers from the Atlanta Falcons. Third-year receiver LaQuan Williams was waived earlier in the day to create a place on the 53-man roster for James, who was a fifth-round pick in the 2008 draft. The 29-year-old has appeared in 18 games in his career, including all 16 for the Falcons last season while serving primarily on special teams. At 5-feet-11 and 224 pounds, the Arizona State product is undersized for the linebacker position but figures to be a contributor for special teams coordinator Jerry Rosburg’s coverage units. James made 11 tackles last season. Prior to 2012, James’ status within the Falcons organization was mostly in flux as he waived on a few occasions and bounced back and forth between the practice squad and the active roster.

Ravens linebacker and Randallstown grad Bryant suffers serious knee injury

Bryant hoped to make a bid for a long-shot chance at the 53-man roster Thursday night in St. Louis but instead suffered what’s believed to be a season-ending injury. The Randallstown graduate suffered a significant left knee injury at the end of the first half when he collided with teammate John Simon. Bryant was down on the field in obvious pain before being carted to the locker room after playing a strong first half that included three tackles and a sack. “That looks like a season ender,” head coach John Harbaugh told reporters in St. Louis after the game. “We’ll know [on Friday] after we get the MRI but all indications are there’s substantial ligament damage there — nothing that he can’t come back from. Obviously, he’ll work on that. I’m sure he’ll get surgery and rehab it.” Bryant figured to be a solid candidate for the practice squad, so the injury likely means he will be placed on injured reserve, allowing him to remain with the organization. He was a member of the team’s practice squad late last season.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Ravens defensive tackle Haloti Ngata returned to the practice field Tuesday after being excused the previous two days to deal with a family matter. However, the Ravens were still dealing with the absence of starting defensive end Arthur Jones and rush specialist Pernell McPhee during their final workout of the week open for media viewing. McPhee has experienced knee soreness for the better part of a week while the reason for Jones’ absence was partially explained by coach John Harbaugh after Tuesday’s practice. “Art had an issue — it’s not football-related,” Harbaugh said. “I’m going to leave it to Art to explain what it was, but it was more of a personal health thing that’s not serious. Coach John Harbaugh told reporters Sunday that Ngata had been excused to deal with a family issue, but the eighth-year defensive lineman wasn’t on the field in the first 30 minutes of the workout a day later.
