Welcome home, we are W N S T A M 1570 Towson, Baltimore. This is Baltimore Positive. We are positively taking the show out on the road, doing the Maryland Crab Cake Tour Faith Lees this week. We’re back at Pizza John’s next Friday, and then we’re going to get on our Costas and Coco’s is on vacation. They come back in August. Pizza John’s is on vacation last week. It’s all brought to you by friends at the Maryland Lottery, where they do not go on vacation, including taking me over this bridge through this fantastic Blackwater area to this beach, and then I can even go south and see these horses. It is the Maryland Treasure Series. I will still have these in my possession throughout the month as we do the Maryland Crab Cake Tour, also brought to you by GBMC and Farnon and Dermer. And also, I’ve got my Raskin Global Gear on. Get well soon to Len Raskin, who was a little infirmed last week, he will return, and this guy’s back. People are asking, what’s up with John Martin? I saw you, he hasn’t been around, so you’re having to pay off all of these Grand Slams, and I’m like, that was a couple weeks ago, those grand slams, we still trying to hit some home runs around here, but big jackpots, and I gotta say this, John, you disappear on me last week, I featured, and I know you have this on the front of MD lottery.com there was a dude who won, he only won 50 grand, it wasn’t one of those billion dollar, but he went 50 grand, mr. Positive, he hit himself as you allow folks to do their identity. His identity was mr. Positive, and I’m thinking, gotta feature that on Baltimore Positive, right?
John Martin 1:31
Wow, I, you know, I missed that. How do I know it wasn’t you?
Nestor Aparicio 1:36
I was not, because I did not buy a ticket at a convenience store in Gates. All
John Martin 1:41
right, just make sure it’s on the up and up there. Hey, we’re having a lot of fun, more fun than people should be allowed to have at the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency. We have over a billion dollars in jackpots. I love when we’re able to say that as we speak, all over $600 million on the Mega Millions, over $400 million on the Powerball, and our little engine that could, our multi-match game with $1.8 million So, all three are in the millions, and add them all up, and I did. It’s over a billion dollars up for grabs.
Nestor Aparicio 2:13
Where do you want to start this week? It’s almost like one game show thing. Tell you
John Martin 2:17
what,
Nestor Aparicio 2:17
you want to do home run riches, you want to do Grand Slam winners, you want to do big jackpot. We got it all going on this week.
John Martin 2:23
Yeah, let’s, let’s start with our friends at Home and Rich’s, and the fact that we have a new promotion as we speak. It is the middle of the week, but on Wednesdays throughout the month of July into the first Wednesday of August, we have a thing called Walk Off Wednesdays, which is very nice, because our home run riches game is called Walk Off Winnings, and every Wednesday through august 5, at this point, if you purchase a fast play home run walk off, which is winnings, that I know, wow, I know, I know, I just washed my mouth, and I can’t do a thing with it. I said
Nestor Aparicio 3:03
something that rhymes with luck and truck a couple weeks ago, and I had to get that,
John Martin 3:10
wow,
Nestor Aparicio 3:11
the out, you know, yeah. So we can’t, that’s not a good look, no radio guy, you know. Seven second delay, but then, yeah, the tom ties, those are the fun ones. Those are
John Martin 3:20
fun. Yes, so if you purchase on Walk Off Wednesdays a fast play home run riches walk off winnings game, you get one free. How about that? I like that only on Wednesdays, though. Only on Wednesdays, limited supplies, so get out there early to your local retailer. We have over 4200 of them around the great state of Maryland, and if you’re interested in that ticket, and I’ll tell you who is interested in that ticket, someone won over $182,000 in Parkton on our Progressive jackpot, that is in fact the Homer enriches walk-off winnings ticket. They have not come forward yet. I’m sure they’re doing all the right things, and you know they’re in
Nestor Aparicio 4:03
Parkton.
John Martin 4:05
We know that’s where they purchased
Nestor Aparicio 4:07
Park, and at the very least. Okay,
John Martin 4:09
so who knows where they were coming and going, but right now, hopefully they’re doing their due diligence and getting their affairs in order, and they’ll come and visit us, and we’ll take a picture with a big oversized check. But that’s what the game is all about. Not only can you win cash prizes, you can win a progressive jackpot, and if you have, unfortunately, a non-winning ticket, that’s still good to be entered into our home run riches contestant of the game. And our progressive jackpot has been reset, and it’s now over $45,000 as we speak. We have handed out over $125,000 in home run and Grand Slam prizes so far this year, and we’re about to play my favorite game, if not yours. Where in the world
Nestor Aparicio 4:51
is get my Google Maps open? Okay, go ahead. Here we
John Martin 4:53
go. Here we go. This week, as you know, the Cubbies are in town, and one of our luck caucus is.
Nestor Aparicio 5:00
There. Yes. Okay.
John Martin 5:02
Chicago. Oh, it’s.. is it in Chicago? Is it here? It’s here.
Nestor Aparicio 5:04
I was just guessing. No, no. Cubs, and I’m like, I’m just playing the game. You’re warming
John Martin 5:10
up. I see.
Nestor Aparicio 5:11
I’m trying. I mean,
John Martin 5:13
so the lucky contestant of the game, Ms. Bertha Raley, is from Chaptico, Maryland, Nestor. Where in the world is Chaptico, Maryland?
Nestor Aparicio 5:27
I am guessing, and this is just because I know where Quantico is, and I know that that’s down sort of Rappahannock way, and so I’m assuming it is on the western shore of Southern Maryland, maybe west of La Plata, somewhere in Charles or St. Mary’s County. Now I’m not looking this up. Now let me go and figure out where it really is, because I, you know, I, because I could be completely wrong, Chap Chico, MD, I’m on it. Chaptico, Maryland is well, it’s way, it’s east of Waldorf, and Laplace, but I wasn’t wrong, I was pretty good.
John Martin 6:11
You get some credit, I’ll give you some credit. There isn’t St.
Nestor Aparicio 6:14
Mary’s, it is in St. Mary’s County.
John Martin 6:16
Absolutely, in St. Mary’s County, it’s
Nestor Aparicio 6:18
right by the 301 bridge, where I had that incredible, I had courtesy the Maryland lottery. I went on a Maryland crab cake tour about four years ago, and I had a crab cake in Pope’s Creek at Captain Billy’s crab. That’s a lovely spot, which I am convinced, if you’re from Chaptico, Maryland, you have absolutely eaten something at Captain Billy’s crab house. There’s no way it is. It’s famous, and that bridge has you ever been down there? It’s fantastic.
John Martin 6:49
Can’t say that I have.
Nestor Aparicio 6:50
Well, I know where Chaptico is, and I’m glad I got it right, and I didn’t even cheat. Yeah, all right, good. All right. Thank you. Lovely parting
John Martin 7:01
gifts for you,
Nestor Aparicio 7:03
myself, play the game and try to stop me and actually get it right. I mean, it’s like when I get Wordle right once a year, let me run around and dance and have a good time with it, you know.
John Martin 7:13
Yes, yes. Well, you can take your victory lap after the show, but
Nestor Aparicio 7:17
you made me good. I’m proud.
John Martin 7:19
Well done. So we wish Bertha Raley great success. Hopefully they’ll hit a home runner two or six. Tell her I had a good
Nestor Aparicio 7:28
time down there. Solomon’s is nice. That’s a nice part of our state, beautiful part of our state, Southern. It is beautiful part, beautiful part, very nice. I had never really been there. John Martin is here. He is the executive director of all things Maryland lottery gaming. Hey, this is like a new year for you from a business like usually bring me numbers in August, and I know they make.. we’re not doing that this year, but you’ll come on. But this is sort of a fresh start for your organization, a little bit. I don’t even know what that means, but I know you have some fresh games coming out too.
John Martin 7:56
We do, we do new promotions, new games. We do have the opportunity to reset the counters, they all go back to zero on july 1. Yes, our final results will be announced sometime around Mako, sometime mid August. We should have those numbers. A little spoiler alert, it was a slightly, slightly by the thinnest of margins, better year than last year. I always like to report on a gain, even if it’s teeny tiny, that, but we are moving the needle in the right direction. Get length about that,
Nestor Aparicio 8:30
but I think it’s interesting that so many people are online and maybe gambling in different ways. Hopefully, one 800 gambler, we always say, but but there, there, there’s always movement, I mean, more people are cord cutting and watching t just in all sorts of ways with how we do things, but I think the sports wagering part of this will become a much bigger conversation than maybe even you and I thought it was going to be five years ago, right?
John Martin 8:54
Oh, absolutely, as we looked and we talked before, and we’ll talk again next month as the numbers come final, lottery revenues were slightly up a little bit from from last year. Casino revenues were down a little bit from last year. So those two kind of are a net wash. The big boost has been our sports wagering numbers, which continue to grow at a at a very positive pace, I bet
Nestor Aparicio 9:21
June’s going to be monstrous, because World Cup became something this year in this country, it never could be in any other year, right? And, as well as being here, I mean, this has been a huge sports summer, in a way that maybe I didn’t see coming, even with the Orioles not playing so great, and the Ravens being quiet, the NFL has been kind of quiet in, in a lot of ways, but boy, the soccer thing’s been really a tremendous fun sports thing, and I know people are wagering on it and having some fun with it a little bit. I even looked at the Final Four, this week of the Spain going away, like, you know, it’s it’s a bracket thing, it’s a, it’s a fun bracket thing that I think more people. People have gotten into that’s even made it to your desk and my desk in a way that maybe 20 years ago wouldn’t have, you know,
John Martin 10:06
there is no question, because as we’ve talked as recently as a couple years ago and looked at the sports calendar, we always talked about, well, you know, after the March Madness, you go into the spring and then you kind of get a lull in summer before it picks up in in the fall, not so much this year. You’re right, it’s kind of.. I don’t think we’ve had a lull this summer, and with the World Cup wrapping up, and bam, next thing you know, it’s preseason next month and kick off in September. Yeah, so it’s.. it’s only going to continue to grow. There are more and more options gets more and more competitive in the landscape, and with all of that, we stress, please get educated, understand the game you’re playing, set aside a budget, stick with it, and and make sure you know what what you’re getting into before you start to maybe get in over your head, and if you do, at any point, feel like you need to take a break or need some resources. One 800 gambler is always available to you, or if it’s a loved one of yours who you, as a family member, want to provide some assistance and support, you can certainly make that phone call as well.
Nestor Aparicio 11:14
John Martin is here. He’s the executive director of all things Maryland Lottery Gaming. Always tell folks to play responsibly. We’re always preaching that, but we have some fun around here with sports, and certainly with lottery games. You go to MD lottery.com A few caveats: we’d love for you to download the app and make sure you’re playing your second chances, because that’s really the way that you become the contestant of the game and home run riches, other things. But I don’t really like fireworks. My cat doesn’t like fireworks. Animals don’t like fireworks, but the fast play fireworks available through the 26th year. Just looking at it, all the different fast play games, and I want to give you a little bit of oxygen. I talked to Seth about this two weeks ago, just about progressive in a general sense, like the games are fun, and there’s smaller dollar games and $5 games, it’s a $20 games, and all of that, second chances, but more than that, the progressive part of these games, and I know you already mentioned, but I think you got to go back and make little exclamation, but you’re looking for $160,000 winner parts, remembers that there’s a, there’s like a little surprise part of this, that when you’re playing the games, if you’re not downloading the app and zapping and doing all the scanning, doing all of that, you’re really, you’re cheating yourself out of the opportunity to win a whole lot of money in a lot of cases.
John Martin 12:24
Fast play is a great category for us. We began that in February of 2020 I believe, was when we launched the ticket. And if you’re not familiar, go to MD lottery.com to learn more about the Fast Play games. We try to keep a fresh roster, a lineup of games available. We just launched four new games here at the beginning of July, and we’ve had some fun recently with linking games in Fast Play to other games in our portfolio. For example, we have a $2 race tracks fast play game, so you play fast play, and if you are lucky enough to have a winning ticket. One of the prizes is actually a free race tracks ticket, so it’s a way for us to reinforce the whole portfolio of games, taking people who are maybe not familiar with Fast Play or race tracks and giving them a chance to kind of cross promote one game over the other. We’ve done that over the years with both Kino and pick three and pick four, so a variety of options where we make people aware in one product category of games in another product category, and hope that that that sparks some interest. So look for the $2 race tracks fast play edition on available in stores now. $5 game called Cha Ching. How about that? Go
Nestor Aparicio 13:42
through all these, because I mean, cash tree diamond spectacular, and cha ching. I again, when this.. when I am a completely washed-up radio host, and when this all goes away, I want to work in your marketing department, come up with these names and sit in these, make this is this is fun when naming games is fun for me, like it is. I wonder, how did they go cha ching?
John Martin 14:11
Well, yeah, that, that I can’t, I can’t mean
Nestor Aparicio 14:16
to stump the boss. I’m sorry, no, no,
John Martin 14:17
that’s like the secret sauce, that’s like Colonel Sanders trying to tell you the KFC recipe, I can’t tell you how that happens.
Nestor Aparicio 14:23
All right,
John Martin 14:24
but it does happen, and we have at any point in time over 20 fast play games available. We also have a variety of scratch-off games available, all of this at MD lottery.com and we have a little bit of a teaser. We have a new.. can’t talk about it now. we have a new draw game coming up in time for the football season, and I will leave it at that.
Nestor Aparicio 14:51
You do a football game with the Ravens, scratching off the purple tickets,
John Martin 14:54
actually the Ravens tickets, the scratch. You could talk
Nestor Aparicio 14:56
about that.
John Martin 14:57
I can talk about that,
Nestor Aparicio 14:58
like next. Week coming up, middle, like Luke gets pizza next week in Wawa. By the way, I’m going to the All Star game in Philadelphia, so next week. Yeah, I’m going to Philadelphia next week. So, little shutdown around here, Luke shutting it down a little. I hope nothing weird happens. We’ll be out on the WNST Tech Service, brought to you by Cole Roofing and Gordian Energy. Tech Service is really going to stink next week, because I’m running it. Luke’s on vacation, um, and I’m in Philadelphia trying to have a good time, pretzels and all that stuff, but we come back. I asked Luke today, like, when he said july 27 and eighth, and I’m like, it’s already July, like the double digits, like, whoo, football, here we go, right? So I think that’s going to be the lead story next week, though, right? I mean, once we get that, is that is your biggest promotion, right? Literally from the Maryland Lottery perspective, right.
John Martin 15:44
Actually, next week, on the on Friday, july 17, is when we will make available in stores all 4200 plus retail locations for the MD Lottery, the Ravens, both the $2 and $10 game. We’ve had those two price points in market now for the last several years, and whether you are a fan of the $2 ticket or the $10 ticket, you certainly will be a fan of the second chance opportunities. Include a variety of additional cash prizes and an option to visit, go with the team on an away game. Want to know what it is?
Nestor Aparicio 16:19
Not Rio,
John Martin 16:22
no.
Nestor Aparicio 16:22
Hold, I don’t even have their schedule in front of me. Let me get my schedule, because I.. I listen. I’m still.. I still believe in the Orioles, John Martin. I’ll have you know, I.. oh
John Martin 16:32
boy,
Nestor Aparicio 16:32
I’m focused around here. Okay? Indianapolis, you wouldn’t send anybody who’s a winner, there would you?
John Martin 16:42
I would, I will let you guess, but I will not confirm nor deny. I will leave that for Seth Elkin.
Nestor Aparicio 16:48
I would tell you that you would send them to Dallas, but that game’s not in Dallas, it’s in Mattocon, not where they’re not winning the Bocopa Mundi, all right now, that is in Brussels. So, I don’t know, man, you gotta have a passport. Atlanta, okay? I mean, Atlanta’s nice. I mean, that’s a night game in October. I mean, be nice, Cleveland. Move on, we’ll move on from that. Oh, I know where you’re sending the winners, and if this does not sound sexy at all, a matter of fact, I’ve never.. I’ve been to this place, and ain’t nothing sexy about it, but.. and if you win, but it’s a new stadium, Buffalo, Buffalo, where they have a new coach in the same old court, so that’s November for.. I’m okay, maybe Buffalo. Hold on, let’s see, Chargers play here, so it’s not LA, you’re not sending people to Carolina Thanksgiving week, don’t do that. Houston, I mean, Houston’s okay, that’s the end of November. I mean, that would be cool. Let’s see here, Pittsburgh Christmas week, you’re not sending, nobody will feel lucky. Cincinnati for New Year’s Eve, Peach Obero. I don’t know, my guess is that you’re doing buffalo in the new stadium. That’s my guess. I’m gonna stick with it. You’re not going to tell me, as I
John Martin 18:06
said earlier, I will not confirm nor deny your guess. But file away, put it in a mayonnaise jar on your back porch, keep it there. And then, when Seth Elkin will be your foil next week, you can talk about that, and he will let you know whether you are correct or not.
Nestor Aparicio 18:22
I’m going to talk to him about former Oriole with 10 RBI in the, in the, wow. How’d that happen? Big Bay, you know, we’re baseball fans around here. Make that one happen.
John Martin 18:31
There was a grand salami in there too, wasn’t there? Was
Nestor Aparicio 18:34
stuff going on? I mean, just a lot of it was just, we want him back. I need, I need, I need the O’Hearn factor back here, Mikey, you have to give money when they hit home runs like this, so yes, John Martin is here, he’s the executive director, and of all things, Maryland lottery and gaming and sports wagering, and all the good stuff. Please play responsibly out there. I think we got all the games in. The one thing that this should be the lead story, because I mean, look, it’s nice if Roquan Smith brings me cheesecake, or you know, whatever, but like, the my wife doesn’t care about any of this race tracks, this or that. She cares about $604 million in mega million. We got some big jackpots right now, right?
John Martin 19:15
Big jackpots. Please play responsibly. Check those out at MD lottery.com or when you visit any of our retailers, and when you do check our website, you’ll find a number of stories about big winners. My favorite story, I think, of the week is a man who goes by mr. Fat Pockets, who is a one of our big spin winners, our fifth of potentially eight big spin winners, who came into our luxurious intergalactic world headquarters here at the Maryland Lottery, and spun the wheel, and ended up winning over exactly $110,000 which is why he has the fat pockets.
Nestor Aparicio 19:53
This wheel is torturous, man. Like I’m looking at it online right now at MD lottery.com It is the big spin wheel made for. Familiar by Paul Barker, spay and new to your pets, ladies and gentlemen. So I’m looking at the wheel, and the wheel, like at the top, where he didn’t get it, 125 and then 100 and then 90, then 200 then 110 then 60, then 175 So it reminds, like, I was watching Wheel of Fortune Night, and every time they spin that wheel, you got to bankrupt, you got to lose all your money. So, there’s none of that on the wheel. There’s not a.. there’s nothing on the wheel that the whammy comes and gets you, but no whammies,
John Martin 20:31
no whammies. There is a point where,
Nestor Aparicio 20:33
like, that thing’s just a little Scooby Dooby Dooby from being 200 grand. Also, a little Scooby Dooby Dooby, that’s my name for the little technical
John Martin 20:43
term I’m not familiar with, but thank you.
Nestor Aparicio 20:45
60,000 or 200,000 it dude did a buck 10, so I mean,
Speaker 1 20:49
so just 200,000
Nestor Aparicio 20:50
60,000 and under 10,000 and it’s on a spin, that no offense to, I don’t say it out loud, Price is Right through Carrie Bob Barr, they don’t ever have that kind of stakes when that thing’s spinning, it’s just like a trip to Guadalajara or something. It’s not like 200 grand, you know. So this is big snake wheel, it’s a bunch of the big spin,
John Martin 21:10
right? Not the little, absolutely. And again, five of the eight potential big spin winners already come forward, so plenty of opportunities for you to be one of the three remaining big spin contestants, where just by walking in you win $50,000 that’s the lowest amount, and maximum value on that wheel $250,000 and I will tease you with the fact that to date no one has won $250,000
Nestor Aparicio 21:39
Spin it better, that’s all I can say. John Martin is here. You know, Benton, like Beckham, is what I would say here during the World Cup. He’s executive director, all things marital lottery game, and he visits us on a weekly basis, or sends representatives. And by the way, the young lady, Angel, who won the Grand Slam in the suite, in the truest suite at the Oriole game, like after the rain delay that hooked the game, and the double header, and like all the stuff that happened, legendary, and even better than when Doug Lloyd calls these people, they hang up on them, and they don’t even believe that they won, which makes it even more fun. You can find all of that, as well as some more winner stories out at Baltimore Positive. My thanks to John. Have an enjoyable weekend. This weekend, birds were at Camden Yards. We’re gonna be down to Faith Lewin, the Maryland Crab Cake Tour. I still have some Maryland treasures, and this has been a treasure full series of fun. We’re WNST AM 1570 Towson, Baltimore. We never stop talking, Baltimore positive,
