The Ravens announced Monday that wide receiver and return specialist David Reed was placed on the 53-man roster after beginning the season on the physically unable to perform list while recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee suffered last December.
To make room, Baltimore placed defensive back Anthony Levine on injured reserve with a shoulder injury.
Where Reed fits exactly is still up for debate as the Ravens are clearly happy with Jacoby Jones’ work handling both kickoff and punt returns, but Reed is a candidate to be used in kick and punt coverage.
“I think he’ll be a big part of special teams probably to start off with,” Harbaugh said. “He’s practiced really well on special teams the [last] couple weeks. [We’ll] kind of work him back into the offense and see where that goes. It just provides us another good football player and see where we can fit him in.”
Odds & ends
The Ravens can clinch their second straight AFC North title with a win over the Steelers and a Cincinnati loss in San Diego this Sunday. However, Harbaugh said his team isn’t viewing the three-game advantage as a comfortable position. “There is no comfort in football. It’s not allowed. Comfort is not the word that comes to mind. ‘Competitive,’ ‘confront’ — not comfort — comes to mind. So, no, we have no comfort.” … Asked to reflect on whether later practice times and sleep studies worked in preparing for a West Coast trip, Harbaugh had some fun with his answer. “Yeah, I thought we were really wide awake at the end of the game.” … Not shying away from the Ravens’ offensive struggles that once again surfaced over the first 50 minutes of Sunday’s win, Harbaugh also offered perspective on his team’s overall performance away from M&T Bank Stadium, which includes a 4-2 record. “Well, we’ve got the [fourth-best] road record in the National Football League, so that’s pretty good. Then again, I think our guys take the right approach. We’re certainly not patting ourselves on the back. We’d rather take the hard look. There are so many things that we can do better.”
