Our favorite segments are the ones when we mix and match guests who’ve never met. For the 25th Anniversary celebration at Costas Inn on the Maryland Crab Cake Tour, sports cartoonist Mike Ricigliano surprised Nestor with typical flair and legendary music teacher Calvin Statham tickled the ivories with an impromptu “My Fair Lady” show tunes singalong.

Wait a minute back, WN st Towson, Baltimore and Baltimore positive. We are positively Costas. It is my 25th anniversary, trying to come up with 25 Wild segments of, of my life. We started the radio station on August 3 1998. Today is August 3 2023. And we’re Costas, we’re celebrating with the Maryland lottery. They’re celebrating their 50th anniversary. We’re giving these away. Do we have any winners yet yet? Jen, any $100 winners? We have some $100 Winners over Coco’s. We’re Costas right now. We’re going to be traveling on the Maryland crabcake tour throughout the month. Next week. We are back in Greenmount. Station and Hampstead. We’re going to be at Pappas in Glen Burnie later on in the month we’re gonna be back at failings downtown. But I’ve already had a bowl of soup here. I’ve had some ribs. I’ve had some french fries. We’ve had great conversations with friends. I asked Mr. Stayton back because he was just legendary. Earlier in the year at drugs city. My son brought his $89.99 cent Casio tone. CT 5200. Probably better than a piano was at Holabird. Mr. State. Him, of course, was my middle school choir teacher. And we had a chorus class. We sent Christmas songs. His wife was an amazing singer in the state of singers. He’s toured the world. So if you want to hear the life story, Mr. Stadium, I learned a lot about you. But I had to have you back because it’s my anniversary. And you’re one of my favorite people. And I invited my favorite people today. Just so you know, John Allen was here, you know, so I want you to know, it’s real. My love for you is real that you were invited to
Calvin Statham 01:34
play. I knew that. You know, I
Nestor Aparicio 01:36
love you. Yeah. All right, right, because I took you to My Fair Lady last year. So this is micro SIG Liano. Mike has been a part of every anniversary I’ve ever had,
Mike Ricigliano 01:45
right? Yes. Right. I’ve supplied you with a champagne bottle to write.
Nestor Aparicio 01:49
So I have a 10th anniversary champagne bottle. We’re Sikhism is an artist. He’s my official cartoonist. Dennis is here. Dennis said to me. Can I meet received? What do you do in here? I didn’t even invite you.
Mike Ricigliano 02:03
I came to gift you this stupid hat. You know? The only reason
Nestor Aparicio 02:09
why knows you love me. You know what it is when you invite people to cost us and they come here. You think they love you all they really wants to crabcake not at all. So you guys have never met my story. So Mr. Stadium took me under his wing in 1979 taught me how to sing. I want to go home. I’m gonna take a sentimental journey. Gone sad. So, so see, this is why I brought the this is why I brought the extra money. Yeah. Sentimental Journey Home. Do you feel like eating for Archie at the piano at the beginning of all the family with this is hard. Yeah, it just feels like we’re gonna start to sing. But Mr. State has been in my life forever. And he disappeared from my life. Even though I was trying to get breakfast with him. When my mother was alive. He avoided me.
Calvin Statham 03:09
I did not avoid you.
Nestor Aparicio 03:11
I tried a lot. I called your son Patrick. And he
Calvin Statham 03:15
would tell me and I said, Well, you have to come and get me and take me.
Nestor Aparicio 03:19
Well, thank God for Lori and Jerry Piper. Laurie here. Do you know this? And I told this story to Dan, I told me I talked about you on the air this week. We’re saying oh, I said when my when my my girlfriend was pregnant with my son. And I was in 11th grade and working with the news American we had Bob NOSC Miss Bob NuSTAR by 10 minutes. Oh, I’m sorry. Let’s go. I was here for two hours. So you are the one adult who was encouraging to me when I had a little bit of a scarlet letter. Right. And, you know, being from Dundalk, and having being a young parent and all of that stuff. And so I mentioned you you show up here, you’ve been in my life all this time. Sure. He’s been in my life all this time and you’ve never met. No, that’s what it’s when he was going out together. Later. We’re getting Sentimental Journey is what you see you every year have made something weird and wild. So you’re the artists. You’re the musician. I want to know what this represents as
Calvin Statham 04:15
the one who didn’t have sense enough to get me as a teacher.
Nestor Aparicio 04:19
Brian Poole did not have you. He signed up for music appreciation or something. Man, Miss Ross Thank you probably. So Laurie and Sherry, when my son when my son was in his formative age, and we’re sick you remember this? I was nationally syndicated? Yeah, in 1998 99 and 2000. My son was 1314 15 years old. I couldn’t leave them at home. But I had this job in Chicago. And he made friends with this kid named Ryan Perry Hall High School Middle School in high school, and had these parents the Pipers who lived around the corner and Perry Hall and Laurie like my son so so much that she said he can move in with me when you’re in Chicago. Wow. So Laurie parented my son at various points during his journey and that’s why it turned out good. I mean, look, these people
Mike Ricigliano 05:13
say exactly the
Calvin Statham 05:14
same. But you see Laurie is a special person.
Nestor Aparicio 05:18
I know she is. Tell everybody why there is.
Calvin Statham 05:21
She’s she’s just absolutely special because she is special. She doesn’t need a reason why. If you meet her one time, you will know she’s special. Correct. Now she did meet a special young man. I have to say that too. He paid me to say that Jerry. But no, they’re both. They’re wonderful, wonderful, wonderful feet. So
Nestor Aparicio 05:45
Jerry’s younger brother I went to high school with and middle school with Jerry’s at Dundalk guy. So I meet these people in Perry Hall who are from Dundalk who babysit my kid. Okay. So a year ago, two years ago on give us the on the tour we’re doing for crabcakes first crabcake tour, my host that was going to put us up down in Easton got COVID and couldn’t have us on the tour. We didn’t have a place to stay. Jerry and Laurie had a boat in St. Michael’s and put us up. We’re out on a boat three o’clock in the morning listening to I don’t know, bad company or something. Listen to some music, right? And we start talking to Mr. Stadium. And they’re like, We know Calvin, I’m like, I gotta get into do the show. This is two and a half years ago. I completely forgot that they knew Mr. Stadium last year. Uh, my fair lady ad came on during ravens game So December. My Fair Lady was playing at the Hippodrome and I said this is a good opportunity for Mr. Cole Mr. Stadium because I was in My Fair Lady. He miscast he miscast me you did?
Mike Ricigliano 06:50
What did you cast him as the girl?
Nestor Aparicio 06:54
He miscast me. Tell him what you cast me as 1982 He was. What was old Tom Karpov Papa Yeah. He cast me as a weirdo in my
Mike Ricigliano 07:07
weird what? Not?
Calvin Statham 07:09
Not a weird it was a
Nestor Aparicio 07:10
Hungarian linguistics expert
Calvin Statham 07:12
and factly so that’s not though
Mike Ricigliano 07:15
right on the mind. I
Nestor Aparicio 07:16
did not have a singing part. I want you to go Wow.
07:18
So but
Calvin Statham 07:20
thing in pot the not always the main part. You know? Sometimes they are sometimes they’re not.
Nestor Aparicio 07:27
I wanted to sing. I wanted to be a star. But
07:30
you didn’t say that.
Nestor Aparicio 07:30
I was born on Broadway. I was born but it was born at church home corner of Broadway and say that I was born on Broadway. It’s true. It is. It’s true to Moscow. So last year, I see the commercial I see it again. And I said that it was cold. It was Christmas time I said to Jen, I’m like, Have you ever seen my fair lady? And Jen’s like, no, never seen my fair. Listen, you know, I was in my fair lady. She’s like really? I said with Mr. Stage and she’s like, is that that old codger music teacher you always talk about that I’ve never met. And I’m like, Yeah, that’s him. The old codger teacher that I was that you’ve never met. And I couldn’t believe they never met because I saw you any I hop with my mother
Calvin Statham 08:07
raise. Did Jennifer say that? Or did you say that?
Mike Ricigliano 08:12
Well, I said that. So I think it should give us a little I have often.
Nestor Aparicio 08:18
So we’re gonna get right because that’s a big part of this store. Okay, got it. So I said, Well, let’s call Mr. Stadium. And I called Mr. Stadium and I invited me said, Well, you got to come get me. And I I went out online and said, Does anybody remember Mr. Stadium, and I put this on Facebook, and Facebook page went nuts. Everybody loves him as much as I do everybody. And then I have a business partner here who is a partner my station Bruce share. His father was Nathan share, who owned the blast and had a Lomas ruler, one to preach. And he said to me, you know, Calvin stayed and taught Pikesville for like a decade. He taught me and all my friends in Pikesville I’m like, what? So I didn’t know any of this. And then Laurie reached out to me and said, You just posted about Mr. Stadium. I’ll go get it. And I said, All right, because he won’t even tell me where he lived anyway. You don’t want me to come get him he doesn’t know where. So we went down to my fair lady on a cold night we bought tickets. And my wife had never met Mr. Stadium and the minute he walked through the door she said you need that man in your life. So I invited him out. And we sang a little bit and I said we’re going to invite him back out of my 25th anniversary you live around the corner from here and you and I’ve never had a crab cake together I don’t like crab cake one that’s why we never had a crab cake. So that explains things so on a day like today I thought we bring the piano out had Mr. Stadium come out sing a little bit nice and he miscast me because I should have been Freddie right you know and and he he cast Louis shown good a nice job and okay job. But I mean, it’s been we’ve been 41 and a half years.
Mike Ricigliano 10:00
and I still don’t seem bitter about it, so
Nestor Aparicio 10:03
I’m hiding it. I’m hiding my bitterness. You know, through all of this. It’s so good to see you and have you out with my friends. And it’s good to have received shock me and Dennis by showing up. Yes, Eddie Lauer’s here now he’s gonna come up play the guitar,
10:18
Eddie. Eddie, bring your
Nestor Aparicio 10:21
guitar. What they were good at what good musician without a guitar. Ah, so I have music use Miss John Allen your bandmates house. So unlike Simon Cowell putting bands together, putting friendships together, and we’re saying I want you to tell the story about your crazy artwork and I’m gonna I’m gonna let you leave you have to leave.
Mike Ricigliano 10:39
Well, thanks. I have to leave. Yes, but I wanted to, you know, contribute to the 25th anniversary thing I’ve known after all those years so yes, this is a just a light up had kind of like our substitute fireworks for the day. All right, I’m gonna take this off. So yes, it’s just a little long haired nester, it’s the long head Nester now pushed a little button here. I’ll do it for you.
Nestor Aparicio 11:04
thing because it doesn’t turn on. Here we go. Yeah, you go. And it lights up and it spins.
Mike Ricigliano 11:10
Yes, there it is. So it’s very fast. For the
Nestor Aparicio 11:14
Aren’t you glad you’re not one of these kind of artists do something. Yes. One wild ride. Oh, man that feels good on a summer. And also
Mike Ricigliano 11:24
you know, I I’m here I was very privileged to do a lot of the yard signs that Nestor has done over the years or season it or Angeles is in it gives Chad steel in it now.
Nestor Aparicio 11:39
Okay. We didn’t put him in it. Okay. crabbing it. The turtle in it. Yeah. It’s
Mike Ricigliano 11:45
an REO. It’s a raven.
Nestor Aparicio 11:47
Mirror. Was that cannabis? Oh my shirt. No, it’s a palm tree. It’s a pumped it looks like cannabis. That one looks like cannabis. And it’s cannabis. Okay, it shown it’s legal now. It’s okay. It’s okay. Okay.
Mike Ricigliano 12:01
Anyway, you know, happy 25th NAFTA, you know, it’s just, you know, happy to have been along for the ride was only 25 It’s maybe it’s longer than 25. And I,
Calvin Statham 12:15
I would have thought at least 50 Yeah. Right.
Nestor Aparicio 12:22
going on tour and leave me alone.
Calvin Statham 12:24
What do you what are you back? On to when I’m gone? I put it last time.
Nestor Aparicio 12:28
Well, you’re not going anywhere. You’re not gonna be here playing my kids at $9 piano okay, no matter what. You gotta get out of your I love you, man.
Mike Ricigliano 12:38
All right, I mean, made mistake. He’s a legend already in my mind.
Nestor Aparicio 12:42
I know. You know about the mystical relic. There’s something you’re a mystical relic unto yourself at this point. Like literally Dennis Kalonzo said to me the other day, can you get received to sign this thing and do this piece of art? And I said he he said to me like how well do you know we’re sick? And I’m like well enough that he drove over your my anniversary and brought me gifts without me even realized he was gonna do it. And you stood me up to Coco’s last week so we gotta get out for you right you can come to my neighborhood I can come to your neighbor I
Mike Ricigliano 13:11
well, we’ll do it.
Calvin Statham 13:13
And some minute fuck you.
Nestor Aparicio 13:16
It doesn’t look like me. Looks like the guy you miscast and in My Fair Lady 82 He’s singing I have often walked down the street before but the pavement never stayed beneath my feet before
Mike Ricigliano 13:31
launch into it.
Nestor Aparicio 13:32
Oh come on come on.
13:34
Oh that one semis Sarah stories high no in time on the street where you
13:52
towering feeling just you know some whatever
Nestor Aparicio 14:05
you don’t have to play it of course he knows how to play
14:24
stories
Mike Ricigliano 14:39
no happy to be here for that.
Calvin Statham 14:43
How long has it been since I played that song?
Nestor Aparicio 14:46
Well, listen, is this the best part about this as we go down to my fair lady, and we’re sitting like the third row he was spitting on us, right? We’re there and he’s I put him on the inside. And it was wonderful because I love him so I’m with him. And curtain opens you And the guy who’s doing Freddie does, you know, I have all fool. And he said that boy can sing is what he says to me. And I’m like, you know, you never said that about me. You know, I just wanted that I wanted that approval from you. You know,
Calvin Statham 15:13
I can’t win it away.
Nestor Aparicio 15:17
When are you here with me? You No,
Calvin Statham 15:20
no, no, you’re here with me. That’s a good point.
Mike Ricigliano 15:23
That’s a good point. Exactly. Right. Yes.
Calvin Statham 15:26
Is that right? Jerry? Is that right? Listen to Jennifer is that right? She didn’t
15:32
even she didn’t take you.
Nestor Aparicio 15:35
Ask him how many years he taught children. This this this is
Mike Ricigliano 15:38
finished at 5099 years. Terry? How
Nestor Aparicio 15:42
many years you teach?
Mike Ricigliano 15:44
Oh my gosh, almost. Almost 50 for my wife,
Nestor Aparicio 15:47
59 years, this man taught music
Calvin Statham 15:50
59 And I’ve been mad October 3 59 years.
Nestor Aparicio 15:56
Man he told me that story over drug city last year. And you know what’s amazing is you walk in and I was with my kids. I always did. I’m 10 years old. I walk in and meet this man. All these years later, still foundational and part of my life. But I didn’t know your journey. You know what I mean? I didn’t know the story of you being from Dundalk. And you had all these.
Calvin Statham 16:16
I was from Sparrows Point. Whetstone document no that sparrows born.
Nestor Aparicio 16:21
Kami says don’t dock right here. We haven’t turned the corner that’s Edgemere H Sparrows Point.

Calvin Statham 16:46

It’s too much to tell. I can’t tell it all and I’m I’m scared that I might forget something if I thought it talking. Why was it called Spirit? Why is it called Spirit? It was called Sparrows Point, I guess because it must have had Sparrow birds riding around somewhere. Right? But I all I know is I was born there. I was the last of seven children. And all my sisters and brothers were teachers of some sort. And I wanted to be a teacher and then that’s when I went to Hollenberg
Nestor Aparicio 17:33
Everlast except to go to
Calvin Statham 17:35
I went to Pikesville from Hollenberg that I came back to Holabird from Pikesville and found me and I found you and so many others. No, no, you already there when I left. What are you talking about?
Nestor Aparicio 17:49
You came in 79 Why would you come back to calibrate? I didn’t know that till I talk to you about it last year.
Mike Ricigliano 17:53
What was he like as a you know a child?
Calvin Statham 17:56
Who this Oh yeah. He was wonderful. He really was really, really fantastic.
Nestor Aparicio 18:08
I’m only listening what’s he doing? I don’t know what he’s saying.
Calvin Statham 18:13
I was saying to you two thumbs up look what
Nestor Aparicio 18:22
that’ll see anything.
18:24
You didn’t see that?
Nestor Aparicio 18:26

Nestor Aparicio 18:59
If I gave you sheet music right now because you really doubt it. Not gonna get I bought a song for you to learn. So I’m not going to tell you now because you can read sheet music theory sheet music. You I have a song that I have had sheet music for for 30 or 40 years and I know that I have sung accompanied by people. And it’s a Quincy Jones song. And I was almost in Los Angeles last Friday is the name for you. You 90 yet?
19:33
Oh my god.
Calvin Statham 19:36
22
Nestor Aparicio 19:37
Okay, so Quincy Jones turned 90 last week and they honored him at the Hollywood Bowl. And they had all of
Calvin Statham 19:43
the Hollywood Bowl though. Did you? Well, yes, I did. Oh, yes. Really? Oh really?
Nestor Aparicio 19:49

But I didn’t and they honored Quincy Jones and Quincy Jones song had the sheet music and I found it. Cleaning all my stuff out is the only sheet music I found. And I’m like, Why do I own this? Because I love the song. What is the song? I’m not going to tell you because you can’t read sheet music.
Calvin Statham 20:09

Nestor Aparicio 22:04
Because you knew I could do better. You knew I could do better. You knew I was a hell of a town right up until the point where you miscast
Calvin Statham 22:13
