Welcome home. We are W, N, S, T, am 1570 task in Baltimore. We are Baltimore positive. We’re positively taking the Maryland crab cake tour out on the road this week. Will be at fade leaves on Wednesday, and then after the ravens and Texans get together on Sunday, on Monday, we will be at Costas in Timonium. I am wearing my El Guapo shirt. I would remind everybody the best chicken enchiladas in the world, get on over to El Guapo. Make sure you check out that pozole as well. The Maryland lottery sponsoring our crab cake tours, I will have some Raven scratch offs to give away on Wednesday and on Monday, two times this week in the ravens are going to play one time this week. On Sunday, the Houston Texans are coming to town, which allows me to invite one of my recurring friends and guests and legends on John McClane has covered football in Houston for as long as I can remember, 50 some years. He is retired, not out to pasture in any way you can find him. McClain on NFL. He’s also a longtime Pro Football Hall of Fame voter. He is down to Houston via waco awaiting this beaten up version of The Raven. John, I was with you five, six weeks ago. Lamar, I think they’re going to win the Super Bowl. I’m picking them. I’m picking them now. Week five, one and three lost to the chiefs, lost to Detroit. But the real story here Lamar, Ronnie, Stanley, Matt a BK, roquan Smith, Marlon, Humphrey, Nate Wiggins, all in the injury report, Texas are picking a good week to get here in Baltimore. I’ll tell
John McClain 01:31
you that, John, if you got to play the ravens, and it doesn’t matter whether it’s in Baltimore or not, since Lamar Jackson got to the ravens, Texans never even come close to beating them. The fewest points the Ravens have scored against Texans, 25 and so it’s always been a blowout. Now Cooper rush, Texans went to AT and T Stadium last year and played against cowboys with Cooper rush, and he threw for like 355, yards, one touchdown, one interception, but the Texans won 34 to 10, and the Texans right now have a defense playing really well, and they’re giving up 12 points a game. They’ve given up 51 by far the fewest in the NFL. They gave up 14 to the Rams, 20 to the Buccaneers, 20 to the Jaguar, 21 to the Jaguars, and zero to the Titans. And so rush knows them very, very well. And and I look at the ravens, what’s going on right now, and it reminds me, the Astros who had more injuries and lost more war than any team in baseball this year, including eight starting pitchers. And you hope that it’s that those I saw my BKs out for the year, and boy, if when Lamar comes back, of course, they can score with anybody. But what is mystifying to me, and I guess it’s because of the injury, is how bad their defense has been that is an un raven like defense, well,
Nestor Aparicio 03:10
they can’t get after the quarterback. Um, you know, that’s since Clowney left and Van noise getting older hadn’t been on the field yet this year, adafe always been just a dude. And, you know, they drafted Mike Green, who had sexual assault allegations on the back end of the Justin Tucker off season here, and they just have not managed pass rush. Stopping the run has been something we’ve been spoiled on around here, especially since roquan Smith came in a couple years ago. That’s also been an, I mean, the whole thing’s leaky right now, John and when you’re talking about Lamar Jackson, $50 million Ronnie Stanley, $20 million Matt abika, $25 million roquan Smith, $20 million Marlon Humphrey, $22 million when those players aren’t on the field, I guess in any franchise you take five or six of the top earners off a team in key positions. I said it was like center field. It’s like the middle of the field is gone on both sides. Now for this team here, John Harbaugh got his work cut out for him right now, especially at one and three, and especially with the lofty expectations of some of you national writers put on them, thinking they’re winning the Super Bowl, they’re my pick, because that’s who you were saying a month ago. This has been the strangest month of ravens football in a long, long time here, John, because we’ve seen it go from huge expectations and rightfully so and a star studded cast to now. How are they going to hold this together and get Lamar upright again?
John McClain 04:38
Help is on the way, and that’s the Texans offense. Texas offense has been terrible. Now. It improved in one quarter, the fourth quarter, against the Titans. But the Titans are just awful. I expect Brian Callahan to be fired anyway, maybe with a bi week. I think in a couple couple of weeks. Coming up, but they’re going they got big problems in Tennessee, as you can imagine, in the Texans, and had scored six points in the fourth quarter, and then they erupted and ended up scoring 26 winning 26 so they have new offensive coordinator and play caller, Nick Haley, who came from the Rams, and he has the Rams running games and patriots passing game where he was before that, and they look better against Tennessee. And yes, Tennessee’s defense is a little better than its offense, but it’s still the Titans, so we don’t know what to expect. CJ strouded, 125, rating, two touchdowns. First time in seven games, he had thrown multiple touchdown passes, and they can’t find a consistent receiver besides Nico condos. He gets doubled by everybody. And one thing they did find in this game that they just had a rookie named woody marks, fourth round pick from USC, a running back, and we’ve been wondering all season why he doesn’t get more carries. And he and Nick Chubb looks pretty good for Nick Chubb, coming off those major surgeries that he has, but woody marks had touchdown rushing, touchdown receiving and and had a it was a third and 17, and they threw him screen pass, and he got the first down, and it was all him. So he’s a player the Ravens going to have to worry about as a runner and as a receiver, but I’ll guarantee you this is going to be a low scoring game. I picked the Texans beat Titans 1916 in a field goal game, low scoring and boring, but the Titans had a field goal kicker. Joey swag referred to him as Joey wide right, because he missed 41 and 43 and but that game was six, oh, in the fourth quarter. So the Ravens defense doesn’t have to be very good to contain the Texans offense. I’ll guarantee you,
Nestor Aparicio 07:01
John McClane is here. He is the general of all things Houston football. He is a Hall of Fame voter, and in some Hall of Fames as well, down in Houston, Texan Texas, the Texans coming in with CJ Stroud. And I think about him. And I think protection, protection, protection. How have you seen him emerge from that first year where he had such incredible success, you know? And I you talk about the supporting cast and being able to run the ball, I think about the front line just protecting him. Has that gotten better this year?
John McClain 07:33
It has. It’s steadily improved. They change each position as new player. Four of them are new Titus Howard played left guard last year, is back at his natural right tackle position. They have a rookie left tackle, second round pick, ariante ursary, who just got schooled in the loss to Jacksonville by Josh Heinz Allen, but he bounced back against the Titans, their right guard, Ed Ingram, they got in the trade with Minnesota for a six round pick pro football focus has him as the highest rated guard in the league, and they they subbed out a left guard. Now they’ve having to play. They’ve switched the centers back and forth, but according to next gen stats each each game, they’ve improved their pressure right and right now they’re 17th, which is amazing, because last year they were 32nd but the offense is still not very good. Sometimes Stroud feels pressure when it’s not there, because he got hit last year, sacked second most, hit the most, and then this year started terribly at the Rams. Rams have a great defensive front, but and he also, under Nick Haley, has the authority now at the line of scrimmage to call audibles, call protection, skate protections, instead of the center. That’s a lot to put on a third year quarterback’s plate, but they had a touchdown pass on Sunday to rookie Jaden Higgins for 24 yards that he switched out of. So maybe he’s growing into this new responsibility, but if he doesn’t have the protection he’s always throwing on the run, bailing out. Sometimes he doesn’t step up. It looks like Nestor. He just lost his confidence. He’s not as comfortable as He was with a rookie when he was fearless. Now he didn’t get in a lot as a rookie, but he just came out and he fling it all over the field and just look confident, comfortable, everything you want, and then, because of the all high expectations, last season, his offensive coordinator Bobby slowly didn’t adjust to the adjustments for Stroud and his offense, which is why he got fired. But the Texans have been 10 and seven each of the last two years. They’ve won a playoff game each. To the last two years, lost on the road at Baltimore, last year, Kansas City and this year, I wouldn’t nobody’s talking super bowl that had a lick of sense. But you I predicted to go 11 and six, and right now, my prediction is way off, because they’re playing a first place schedule, and it’s still tough, even though they’re catching the Ravens at the you’d think at the right time, Texans haven’t beaten the Ravens. Ravens Since Gary Kubiak was there.
Nestor Aparicio 10:29
Is that the case Keenum game when he came out of the train, beat him 2014
John McClain 10:34
when Kubiak was the offensive coordinator for the Ravens.
Nestor Aparicio 10:37
John McClane is here. He is McClain on NFL, if all wise people in the league follow him, he covers the Texans and and the old Oilers and titans in in Nashville as well. Through all these years, you’re already predicting that the Titans are firing the head coach, right?
John McClain 10:54
Yeah, let me tell you something. Since you you like the Oilers, I was at a fundraiser last Friday at a place downtown raising money for the thing for the Houston Police Department called assist the assist the officer. And Dan pastorini was there former others, quarterback, your favorite doctor, Doom, Robert Brazil, Vernon Perry. It was a lot of former wheelers at this event. And when we do charities, and we ask those guys to come, they always come out because they’re great in the community. They’re still beloved here, even though the Oilers moved to Nashville and now the Titans, and they’re not the Texans. They don’t have an association with the Texans. But boy, if you need them for good causes. You can get them.
Nestor Aparicio 11:43
Well, we had the same thing here with Bruce Laird. We had it forever with Tom Matty, until he passed. We honor the 75 colts here three weeks ago. John So Bert Jones was in the room. I was in a room with Bert Jones and Roger Carr and to me, and I had light Ella on the show. So, you know that’s that’s as good as it gets to the seven year old version. A little nasty Nestor, so John McClane is here. He’s down to Houston. All right, let’s stop all this. I get back to football in a minute, because I know
John McClain 12:09
I got one more thing. Go ahead, there’s a thing about a book that’s just out, and it’s written by David Fleming from ESPN. I forget the title, but it was about the one season of the Dallas Texans in 1952 they had guys like Gino Marchetti, they had a future colts, and they moved, after one season, to Baltimore. And I’ve been going through that book. David Fleming, if people google it, his new book, you’ll see it. And there’s so many great players on that one team that became great. They weren’t that really good that year, but the team was an abomination in every sense of the word. And they and they all became the cults. And it is got some great stories. Well, a little Baltimore
Nestor Aparicio 12:59
history there for you as well. Do you think they can win the Super Bowl with CJ Stroud?
John McClain 13:06
Not now. I think Stroud is good enough quarterback to win anything if he has talent around him right now, he has one really good receiver. They drafted receivers in the second and third round, and maybe his line will get better, but they’re going to have to address it again in the draft. And they have, they have drafted three linemen in the first in two seconds, and none of them are starting. The first round picks, long gone. Guard Kenyon green, biggest bust in team history. And then they have two others, a guard juice Scruggs doesn’t start, and right tackle Blake Fisher doesn’t start, and they were second round picks the last two years. So it would help if General Manager Nick casario would hit on offensive lineman like he does every other position. But yes, I think Stroud is good enough to win the Super Bowl. He’s not Patrick mahomes, but he’s not Trent Dilfer either, but he’s got to have players around it, John,
Nestor Aparicio 14:03
I’m sure you remember the first time you met Damico Ryan’s when he came from Alabama, and 20 years later, he’s the guy running the organization, Zach, or is one of those guys here in Baltimore on defensive side that I remember the day I met Zach, or he’s from Dallas, but don’t hold that against him, and now He’s running the defense here, sort of a similar trajectory for a young African American defensive stalwart now, Zach or had the game taken away from him physically, maybe the same way Matt abika is going through right now. We’ve had those parallels this week, but in Tamika Ryan to come back and I, I think this in the backside of Deshaun Watson, we’ve had our situation here with Ray Rice and the Wembley knee and 17 for the Republicans in the fan base that follow Trump, and then the Justin Tucker nonsense here in the office, these franchises trying to put the right shine and face on things. I think the Texans have had the hardest time with that just because, and I’ve known you a long time, it hasn’t worked there for the Texans and. They’ve been back in the same way, the Browns haven’t been as bad as the browns, but haven’t won enough playoff games. Haven’t been as big as the franchise could and should be to make a Ryan’s being charged with that. But more than that, just sort of a beloved community guy. It serves a lot of purposes, and he’s growing into being a head coach, but he’s an impressive guy, and I got to think, when you met him when he was 21 years old. You’re not shocked that he’s 40 and running
John McClain 15:24
the team, right? No. And about Zach Gore, when I watched the Ravens on TV last year, and then when I watched him, when they annihilated the Texans on Christmas, and I watched him, and he always would get a lot of attention during the game, and I’d read about him, and I’d think that guy’s going to be a head coach. He reminds me of Damico and and Damico Ryans was out of football one year. I met him the day after he was drafted second round in oh six NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. Played here six years and then, and he had a injury, and Wade Phillips wanted to go to a three four in 2011 didn’t think he could play it, so then they traded him to Philly, where he played his last four and blew out his Achilles and any spinning year out of football. And Kyle Shanahan, Robert salah, who been on the staff with Kyle Shanahan under Gary Kubiak, called him up and said, we’re putting together a staff here for Kyle. Would you be interested in coming over and being a GA we think you’d do great. And so dmico said yes. So Solid told Kyle Shanahan, Kyle reached out. They hired him. He went over there was part of that staff started quality control, moved up to linebackers, then defensive coordinator, when solid went to the jets, and he did really well, and when the Texans brought him back, you’d have thought it was a dignitary when he came in. It was such a big deal here because he was so respected by the fans and the media. And I remember when he came in with his wife and kids out of his limo and walked into the front of NRG stadium. Every employee was outside or inside, up the stairs, and it was like a gauntlet for D’Amico, with everybody clapping for him, because he is so respected. And the first news conference, he had Nestor. They had a lot of former players there, and he gave a speech, his introductory speech, and when we walked out to interview the former players, they said, Man, he’s got me so fired up, I want to go find my whole uniform and suit up right now. And I told him, I said, Man, when you played, you were a good talker, but not that kind of inspirational. He said, I’ve learned a lot since I left here, and the players love him and respect him. He gave up this past game defensive play calling to his coordinator, Matt Burke, so he could focus on the big picture, especially on the offense, which had been so bad. And I don’t think Titans were good barometer the Ravens because of injuries and everything. May not be either, but if they’re, if they, D’Amico is a really good coach who’s very motivational type guy who’s respected by his players, he fired one of his closest friends, Bobby, slow after his first Bobby’s second year. No, it’s first year, snow second. And it was a hard thing for him to do, because they had come up together with the 40 Niners and had it packed. You get a coaching job first, I’ll hire you to make go. Got it. Hired Bobby as his play caller and offensive coordinator, and it didn’t work the way they wanted it to last year. And good coaches have to make hard decisions because Bill O’Brien told me something Nestor that I’ll never forget. Somebody told him. He said, a new coach hires his friends because you’ve made these deals with everybody. If I get it, I’ll hire you. And if you don’t realize which one of them can’t coach, and you keep them, you’re destined to fail. In other words, your friends can get you fired quicker than anybody in Damico made those he makes tough decisions. They’ve already cut loose with CJ Gardner Johnson, who was a head case around there, and then they they have traded by offensive tackle cam Robinson, who had become a backup who could only play left tackle, and so they traded him to Cleveland yesterday. So domicos not afraid to make hard choices in the GM nick the serio tries to give him the players he wants, the kind of players he wants. He never shoves a player down Ryan’s throat and they that’s why they have such a good working relationship.
Nestor Aparicio 19:45
John, you know football better. Anybody I know, I’m sitting here watching this Raven thing fall apart, and I think to myself, how can you expect them to win based on the players that aren’t on the field this week? Harbaugh’s got his hands full here, just all the way around. The thing is on. Fire in a huge way at one and three for the fan base here, for how bad the defense has looked, for how bad the pass rush has been now, the injury setting, which is an easy crutch to use, but this is, this is a tough circumstance for the Ravens right now, and completely not where anyone in the organization thought they were going to be two three weeks ago,
John McClain 20:20
certainly not me, as I picked him to win the Super Bowl, I it’s third year in a row. I’ve done it your fault. He’s blaming the last two and I don’t remember you going, No, no, they’re not going to win the Super Bowl because we thought there was a good chance they would. They’d be a contender. And the fans up there, they’ve been spoiled. You know, once Lamar got there, that already won two Super Bowls, and Lamar comes in, and, yeah, Lamar needs to win a Super Bowl. Lamar needs to get to a super bowl first. And but they, every year, they’re a Super Bowl contenders. So now, because of circumstances, injuries, I’m guessing it’s injuries, although that defense looked awful in the Buffalo game before they started getting hurt, and you mentioned earlier about the team here, yes, it’s been a disappointment. They’ve never gotten beyond the divisional round, because every time they’ve won the Division, and they want it more than any other team, they’ve won wild card games, like last two years, beat the Chargers last year browns, the year before they play that next game on the road, and they have to go to places like Baltimore, and they’ve been to Baltimore twice now in the divisional round and got killed Kansas City, until they get a playoff game and home in the divisional round, they’re not going to AFC Championship game for all the fans in Baltimore who are who are complaining, how about this? Houston has not had a team in the AFC Championship game since the 1979 love your blue Oilers, led by Earl Campbell, Dan pastorini and Bob Phillips, one
Nestor Aparicio 21:59
folk caught that ball in bounds. I’m telling you right now,
John McClain 22:01
79 and they haven’t won one since 1961 when the Oilers won the first two AFL championship.
Nestor Aparicio 22:12
That’s a long time, but you remember it, though, right? John,
John McClain 22:16
I did truthfully when I was a kid. I love to see, I love to see. Started 60 cowboys started in 60. I was nine years old. I watched them religiously, and I watched the AFL because they threw the ball all over the place. They had George bland a year. They had Billy cannon. They had good receivers. They won it. They were high scoring. They were great. The gray helmets, right? Gray helmets and the cowboys were awful, three three yards and a cloud of dust, so I fell in love with AFL, like a lot of fans did when they were kids back then,
Nestor Aparicio 22:48
nothing says AFL, like that helmet. I’m gonna tell you right now. John McClane is here. Listen, I love to see you smile, and I don’t want to see you frown or cry, and certainly don’t want
John McClain 22:58
to see you don’t ask me about the Astros.
Nestor Aparicio 23:01
Well, what about the rest of baseball? What about the rest of the posts? I think, Hey, man, you went a lifetime without having playoff games from 1980 and 86 on and you know, I’m in Baltimore, I can talk all day about what we haven’t had here, and all the years I’ve owned the radio station, but this is a weird postseason for the Astros and not be involved. And certainly I watched that sham of a press conference with manzalino and Elias on Monday on my television here the baseball thing in both of our Bergs. This is where it really gets disappointed the real baseball heads like you and I to sit and watch everybody else play for the next month.
John McClain 23:39
Well, to me this year, and I’m sure to you as well, considering what the Orioles, Orioles had been doing, I thought Baltimore was the biggest disappointment in the American League. In Atlanta, biggest disappointment in the National League. And Astros been in playoffs eight years in a row. They didn’t deserve to be in the playoffs this year, because if you can’t beat the stinking A’s in West Sacramento, California twice in a three game series, you don’t deserve to be in. If you can’t sweep the losing angels in the last series, you don’t deserve to be in. They lost on a tie breaker. Tigers just started to choke like crazy, but they backed in, and they had the tie breaker with the Astros. So they got in. The Astros didn’t. And I will say this honestly, the Astros had more injuries than any team I’ve ever seen, including player like Jordan Alvarez, who missed, missed 125 games and but that’s not what kept their best players who were healthy from having a bad season. They struck out second most in baseball. They chase fourth most in baseball, which is maddening. And Jim crane their owner, he’s not used to not being in the postseason. So we’re expecting big changes in this off season. We’re not. Sure what all the fans want the hitting coaches gone and they want the medical people changed because of all the not just the injuries Nestor, but the rehab and the diagnosis and the coming back and so expect big changes from the Houston Astros.
Nestor Aparicio 25:17
Well, you had a parade, even though you banged on trash cans around there, I I would be okay with him cheating to win here. Now at this point, it’s just been too long since 1983 John McClane is here. He knows that the Astros didn’t cheat, and if I give him another half an hour, he’ll explain to me that all of my Venezuelan brethren didn’t had no effort in cheating in that but hey, look, the Yankees and Red Sox are here. We can hate on them, even though they’re playing together. And there’s a part for me we’re like the Guardians coming on like this. Let them win this year. Let them finally win in Cleveland. That’s what I think
John McClain 25:47
I’d like to see Seattle and Milwaukee, the big market teams that spend all the money not getting in the World Series. And by the way, it’s trash can lids, not trash cans. So if the Orioles are going to do it, they need to make sure they get
Nestor Aparicio 26:01
it right. Well, they got Mike Elias. They got some roots, you know.
John McClain 26:04
And I don’t want to see the Dodgers anymore, the best team money can buy. I’m tired of seeing them. I want to see new blood. I think if the guardians are in there, that’s fine with me. But I don’t hate Seattle. I hate the Rangers. I hate the Dodgers. And I used I grew up a die hard Yankees fan, so I can eat the Yankees like most fans here. So it’s the Dodgers and Rangers, but Seattle, I would love to see the mariners in winning division first time since I won when they had one of the biggest chokes in playoff history, considering a 116 games and lost to the Yankees, and I think that’d be great. And I think the Brewers, brewers been the best team in baseball all year. And I, I’m, let me ask you this, I remember after last season when the Orioles had all those great young players and they were came up through the system, why did they not fortify their pitching staff and do a better job of that.
Nestor Aparicio 27:04
They have poor ownership right now. This ownerships talked a lot. The guy’s made his own bobblehead. He got, um, he got picketed last week for all of his investments in in fossil fuels and wrecking the earth and all that stuff. So, I mean, this guy came in as a white knight, a Baltimore guy, and my dad was a postman. He these are hedge fund guy, these, these. These are not these are not Baltimore people. They’re not people that have moved into the community and made it a part of the community. And the press conference on Monday just left me really scratching my head. Why you would have the interim manager you’re not going to bring back as part of the postseason pre it just every single thing they’ve done, it’s, it’s, it’s just as bad as Angelo’s. It’s just different kind of bad. It’s a more quiet bad, and it’s not overtly evil out in front of it, the way Angelo’s really was for a long, long time. I don’t know what they’re going to do. They’re doing a lot of talking, and I know this half a million fans. They lost this year at the gate. A half. Their attendance was down a half a million, and they finished in last place. And all of their young players, all of them in totality, holiday, rutchman, Henderson, Mayo, all of them had worse years this year. So I don’t know what to say. They have not made a change in leadership. Mike Elias is still going to be the guy picking the groceries. He’s going to pick the manager, as you know, in baseball, he’s going to boss the manager around. So who the manager is? It’s not going to be Buck Showalter, you know, it’s not going to be Bruce Bochy. So I don’t know how this is going to go, but it’s been very disconcerting here, because it felt like it was on the move up for both of these franchises. Now we have a one in three injured Lamar, all of that on the backside of I mean, I’m out of the sports business. John, I hate sports, I’ve decided. But at one o’clock on Sunday, I’ll be watching football with you. Hey, I love having you on twice in the same month. We’ve been blessed. My audits have been blessed. I’ll, uh, I’ll bother you again when the ravens and Texans play in the playoffs in a few weeks.
