While Nestor wanted to lean in on Maryland Lottery Executive Director John Martin just a tad during Cleveland Week (Guardians exit and Browns fall), this one also included a mutual Fernando Valenzuela tribute and a chance to roll out the big holiday scratch-offs and promotions that have skipped right past the pumpkin pie and into the peppermint season. And someone sitting on a $1 million ticket that is unclaimed.

SPEAKERS

John Martin, Nestor Aparicio

Nestor Aparicio  00:01

Welcome home. We are W, N, S, T, am 1570 Towson, Baltimore and Baltimore positive. At some point I’m gonna get my 26 logo up. I have this great oyster and crab. I just haven’t put it on the video yet. This week, I’m waiting for our 27th anniversary. Uh, big week. This week we, uh, we’re crab cakes. We’re back out on the road. We’re going to be at mama’s on the half shell. The kids call it foundry row. I call it painters mill because I’m old school, because I once saw Frankie Valley into four seasons there, back in the day, Marilyn Lowry Britton, all together, the Raven scratch offs. This has been a lucky batch that Roz worked me up last month. Still have a handful of these left. We’ll be doing that in conjunction with our friends, Jiffy Lube, multi care that move Luke Jones back and forth to Owings Mills in a short, condensed football week. And, you know, people wonder if John Martin of the Maryland lottery is a stand up guy. He is here in the aftermath of the Cleveland guardians lost, which we all here in Baltimore mourned because of what it meant for the Yankees as well as it’s Brown’s week here in Baltimore, John Martin, we’re purple today, the executive director of all things Maryland, lottery and gaming. How are you? I mean, I know you weren’t really ducking me last week, sending me Seth and all, but I felt bad for the Guardians I did, and I I wanted it for you, for all of you, and all of my Cleveland buddies are on this week because we’re playing the Browns this week. So I am publicly saying I was guarded out. I was ready to go. I was all in on big Christmas.

John Martin  01:28

Nice, yes, I think we all were, and I you know that, and that’s the fun of playoff baseball, isn’t it? I mean, for for 99% of the people viewing that, they had no idea who this young man was and ironically. And you know this because you’re John Kenzie, what a great name. John Kenzie Noel, his first major league game in Baltimore, first at bat, Gone Home Run. That doesn’t happen to everybody, and then in that under the bright lights. I mean, I love the reaction from people all over the country, starting with Brian Anderson on the call dusty Baker in the studio the Spanish broadcast in Cleveland, who merely began singing Felice Navidad.

Nestor Aparicio  02:12

I could have to google that that’s

John Martin  02:13

good. Yeah, it’s, it’s, that’s the stuff that just makes you, makes you proud to be a fan, next to us, fan of the game. Well, regardless, regardless of where you’re from, but you know what? They were playing with house money all along. You can go back to the archives. I know you have them early in the season. I told you, wait a minute. You know, let’s, let’s keep this real. They have no starting pitching. They massively ran the bullpen, unfortunately, to excess, by

Nestor Aparicio  02:40

the way, as Luke pointed out this week, he’s like, you wonder why I talk bullpen all of July and August, for the Orioles perspective, like, you gotta have a bullpen. And now that we’re three weeks into the playoffs, you gotta have a bullpen, right? There were

John Martin  02:53

six pitchers that I understood I was American Leaguer in all of baseball. Six pitchers had a less than 2.00 era. I don’t know about whips and wars, I know about eras. Four of those six were the Cleveland guardians bullpen, right? That that doesn’t happen, but it did, and it was a great learning experience. First time manager Steve Vogt, fans are jacked and ready for the next go round, and I think you know, Hope springs eternal in places like Baltimore and Cleveland. And Cleveland, where you have young teams that you’re building, and the hot stove league is heating up already with with who’s going to be where next year. And we can all agree on one thing, anybody but the Yankees. And as we we tip our cap, our Dodgers cap, and acknowledge the news recently, this week, the passing of a legend in Fernando Valenzuela. No,

Nestor Aparicio  03:48

it as we taped this. It happened in the overnight, and at two in the morning, I got up and saw it on my phone. And I knew Fernando, so I, I took, I taken a great picture with him about 12 years ago at Arizona. He had a cup of coffee. Here he was in this is a fun thing. John Martin from the Maryland lottery. Here we’ll get to jackpots and Christmas, sure, holidays. And with Scratch, we’ll get to all this with Fernando, when he came to the team was 9092 9394 in that range, right? And and they were struggling at that point. Johnny Oates was here. He was a legend, right? And I was he. I was 1213, years old, and 8081, 82 so now I’m 2324 I have my own radio show that one day the Maryland lottery would sponsor, and I’d have my own station. But this is in 1992 93 I’m I’m 2526 working at the paper. If you’ve watched my documentary, you can tell where I was in my life at that point. And Fernando, they signed Fernando Valenzuela. They bring him in. And like, Fernando was almost as big a deal as Cal Ripken to me, you know, at that point, he was a legendary figure in 1992 93 and he came in the locker room, and I was a little afraid of him, and I didn’t know if he spoke English real well. I didn’t know, you know any much about him, other than, you know, the set and the screw. All and like all of that stuff, he just was a beautiful guy, and really under the radar, low key for all that Hollywood and all the Mexico loved him, and like all that, just a sweet, sweet guy, and a guy that was always had a smile, would always say hello to you before you said hello to him. So when I saw him in the parking lot 15 years ago, I yelled, Fernando. He looked around, didn’t recognize me, and then he lit up when he recognized me. Big hug. The whole thing. My wife took a picture. It’s the last time I saw him, but I saw he had been struggling. But Fernando, I told my wife when I was making my royal farms coffee this morning, and we’ll get on to I have a Christmas segue for you. She’s gonna love that. Um, I told my wife this morning we’re making coffee. Said Fernando died less. She’s like, Yeah, I know it’s terrible. And I said it makes me think of in 1993 I was new to radio, trying to get over, trying to get nasty Nestor and be a star. I’m on the air 18 months at the time. We would have thought it would last 33 years, but I played the song Fernando every night. He pitched for good luck, the Abba song, Fernando. So I have all the tapes, and the tapes literally say on their Fernando. Like the literal tape, say Fernando, so I can go back. This is new tradition of my show, W, i, t, h, call me right now, 481, 57 so I had all of this stuff going on when I was a young man, and Fernando was a beautiful memory, you know. So, um, speaking of Christmas, we had big Christmas. Yes, yes. I’m home with my phone, and I don’t want to say that you have opted me into something that you have and probably I hit, didn’t notification. And I’m always using the app. I’m always using your app, because when I give these tickets away, people go say, hey, Nestor, did I win anything? I don’t understand how to play the game. And I’m like, Well, get your little price check and give me your little Scooby Doo, and I’m gonna open my little Scooby Doo and go and it either gives congratulations and I get I get flowers and balloons, or I get not a winner. And because I use that app, somehow I’ve been Saturday morning, I woke up and it says holiday scratch offs now available. I got my notification so I knew what I would be talking to you about this week, even before I did my big Christmas segue Nestor,

John Martin  07:02

as we say around here, and we’re fond of saying it. It’s never too early to play holiday scratch offs.

Nestor Aparicio  07:08

I just got pumpkin and spice in my coffee. What are you doing to me with this peppermint?

John Martin  07:11

That’s alright. That’s alright

Nestor Aparicio  07:14

for that. If eggnog is available, I’m in. You know? You know, if

John Martin  07:17

you go to MD lottery.com, and just peruse the lineup at the $1 price point. Gift tag cash. Just as it sounds, the ticket looks like a gift tag Nestor. We think that’s going to be a fan favorite at the dollar price point. Gift tag

Nestor Aparicio  07:34

Nestor, from John exactly top price, $500

John Martin  07:38

How about that number two in the lineup. The $2 price point. It’s gold outside. Gold outside. I have these

Nestor Aparicio  07:47

tickets in front of me. You got snowflake triplers. You got good stuff. Here we do.

John Martin  07:51

We do $3 peppermint payout,

Nestor Aparicio  07:53

five peppermint smell this year.

John Martin  07:55

You know what? We did not. We did not opt in for the peppermint this year.

Nestor Aparicio  07:59

Nothing smelling this year.

John Martin  08:01

Well, that’s don’t open the door for me.

Nestor Aparicio  08:04

Hold on. Hold on. Last year you did gingerbread and peppermint. I was thinking, maybe you get eggnog, and I don’t know, just don’t do Juniper. Juniper doesn’t smell good.

John Martin  08:14

Well, yeah, yeah, I understand that. But they’re not smellies this year. They’re just, they’re unscented this year. That’s the word you’re looking for. The $5 holiday like doubler, the $10 snowflake, Tripler. And I lied, it smells like snowflakes.

Nestor Aparicio  08:31

No, it doesn’t. You’re making that up. The $20

John Martin  08:35

win, 100 200 or $500 we’ve had this ticket before. It’s not necessarily a seasonal ticket, a holiday ticket, but we did give it a little festive look.

Nestor Aparicio  08:44

Yeah, Christmas balls on there. It’s got ornaments on there. Yeah?

John Martin  08:47

Okay, ormonds, yeah. Ornaments is the word looking for there too. Just, just to help you out on the lexicon today. So that’s that’s going on. But you know what? We also have, as you’re well aware, Second Chance prizes. If cash prizes aren’t instantly in your future. Please enter via M My lottery rewards, and you can enter your your your tickets, and we will have 12 weeks of extra chances to win, starting with the end of October. Go to MD lottery.com for the dates to enter the dollar ticket denomination, the price you pay is the number of entries. A $5 ticket gets you five entries, for example. And we will start on the 28th 29th of October will be the actual prize drawing for five, $5,000 winners. 12 weeks of five, $5,000 winners, plus a little extra bonus in there, twice in the in the run midpoint, about December, 4, fifth and at the end, January 16, one $100,000 winner. So lots of cash prizes if you’re not lucky enough to win instantly, on the on the scratch off. MD, lottery.com, for all the details on that, I’m

Nestor Aparicio  10:03

going to start a rumor that John Martin told me that the snowflakes are scented as I go out here. Just don’t call me a snowflake as we get through there a big, big jackpots. My wife noticed the other day. She purchased last week. But remember, my birthday was about 380 400 million. Got her in. She put the 20 bucks up. Next morning, she said, no winners. And next thing you know, we’re getting up on a lot of money. We’re over a half a billion dollars now, right? Well,

John Martin  10:32

first off, thank you for playing, and thank Jen for playing. As we speak, we’re nearing the half billion dollar mark on Powerball, about a quarter billion on the Mega Millions and our sleepy little multi match up to 1.7 million. That’s our in State game. Draws on Monday and Thursday. Check MD lottery.com, for all the details on how to play. But that’s the one that kind of creeps a little bit of the time, up to 1.7 million. That’s going to get some folks interested as well. But yeah, please check out the jackpot. Play responsibly enjoy, and hopefully you’ll you’ll be able to to get one of those come see John Martin messages on your phone. Yeah, I went

Nestor Aparicio  11:16

to went through this with Seth Elkin last week. A little bit dreaming, because that’s what you want me to do. You want, you want me to do. You want, you want my wife to dream about $478 million what will we do? How much cash will we get? We went through the, you know, 52 weeks, and $1,000 a day and $1,000 a week and all of those things. But I’m thinking 1,000,007 in multi match. And a lot of folks multi match, tell folks what multi match is. It really is. It’s our State game. As you say, it is

John Martin  11:40

an in law, yes, in State game. It’s been with us longer than I’ve been with us. So it’s been here a while. It plays a little uniquely and that you have the option to pick your own six numbers, or you can have the computer generate those, and then you get an additional two lines. So actually, you’re playing three lines, 123, and if you if you match the numbers drawn out, so you win. But you also have the option to have all 18 numbers in play, all three lines to to move up the prize ladder as well. So lots of fun, very interesting game, a little different than your traditional Powerball Mega Millions. I’m

Nestor Aparicio  12:17

gonna have to talk to my friend Leonard Raskin, Raskin global, about how much money it’s going to take to put me away, to get me off the rate, just to get me out, just, just for me to drop the money, literally drop the mic, right? Like I’m thinking 1.7 million probably get, you know, billion of that, or like that. You know, put that away in a little nest egg as a 56 year old now, and I’m getting low, I’m just trying to figure out what’s going to get me to retirement. That’s the game I want to play. John Martin is here. He’s executive director of all things Marilyn, lottery game. Until then, I’m going to talk about the scented snowflake tickets around here, as well as these tickets I have, which have been a real lucky batch. We’re in football season. You know, we talked about the Ravens when they were owing to, remember back when they were owing to, and what was us and housing, seems a long time ago, long time feel like a little while ago, momentum wise. And this is the part of the program where I think your mic gets a little fuzzy and our signal goes down a little bit, because we have to talk about the Ravens during Brown’s week, especially the Deshaun Watson and listen, you don’t have to anything about the browns. I’m doing it all this. We have Darryl. Darryl. Darryl writer on for an hour. I’ve had Munch bishop on for an hour this week talking about all of that. So I don’t even need to get into the football side of it, but your little game here with the ravens, first off, it’s the most successful, most played game you do every year, according to all of you. When you tell me about the Raven, scratch off game, but it comes to life even more when the team comes to life and they have lost in a month and a half, and it’s it’s starting to not just feel like the holidays are out here. It’s starting to feel like a Festivus a little bit, because teams pretty good.

John Martin  13:42

The team is doing well, and players who love the Ravens scratch up tickets are doing very well as as well. Go to MD lottery.com and check out the fun ways you can participate with both a $10 and a $2 ravens ticket. Again, if you are an instant winner, you win cash. That’s wonderful. But if you’re not, you can enter those tickets into your My lottery rewards account and potentially win some valuable experiential prizes. For example, we have a new thing called fan of the game, where, if your name is selected for that particular game, you win $1,000 you get another 1000 for each touchdown scored by the Ravens last week. Suzanne Winchester of Bel Air five touchdowns. Nestor against the bucks, she wins $6,000

Nestor Aparicio  14:29

See, that’s what I want to do. I want to be at the winner’s house when we’re going to throw six, when we’re playing the browns. No offense to you. I mean, you know I’m so you know what I’m saying, right? But on the week when you’re the winner and like, we’re going to score 567, touchdowns, I want to be at their house for each one of those that that would be the most fun place. Miss Winchester, that would be the best place to be. I would think especially well the fourth

John Martin  14:52

or fifth one. You know what? Valerie Vale I don’t know if she’s going to be throwing a party this weekend. She’s out in Frederick. She’s next up. She

Nestor Aparicio  14:59

loves. Patrick, I’ll come over. Val, let me over, please. I’ll bring money. I guarantee she’s going to win more money this week. They’re going to be touchdowns this week. That much. I can promise you

John Martin  15:09

bring that famous spinach dip that I know you you whip up from time, right? So I’ll do that, yeah, with the bechamel, sure. Oh, sure, excellent. But she’s on deck for the the game coming up this weekend. And then we have Marianna Johnson of Oakland, Maryland, she’ll be the fan of the game on November. Lovely out

Nestor Aparicio  15:25

there. That’s this time of year, Western Maryland. Very seasonal foliage. Oh, nice, yes,

John Martin  15:30

yes. Very nice friends. Hey, you know what’s this is fun on the Ravens. One more thing before we move on from that, we have our away game trip. And this year is New York. And on December 15, the three people were selected last week. They are Leonard Brown of granite Maryland, bon Garcia of Riverdale and Raymond Jones of Salisbury. Those three lucky winners and a guest will be on the team train to go to New York, and that will come up the middle of December. So lots of fun involved for them as well. MD, lottery.com. All about the ravens and Second Chance prizes. You

Nestor Aparicio  16:06

want me to sing Billy Joel or Frank Sinatra? Which one you

John Martin  16:09

want? Oh, do I have a none of the above. Is that an option. Some folks like to get away.

Nestor Aparicio  16:14

Take a holiday from the neighborhood. John Martin is here. Hop a flight to Miami Beach or to Hollywood. We’re going to New York on the Ravens trip. So all of these things that are happening in holidays, all this, which still an event season. Here we talk about the autumnal part of this. And by the way, since the last time you and I got together, I saw the Northern Lights. I don’t know if you do you know this that the Northern Lights were here, that was an amazing like that was number one on my bucket list of all the things that if I won a billion dollars from the lottery, I would chase the Northern Lights until I found it. I don’t need to do that anymore. So I told Leonard Raskin, my financial advisor, I’m like, you know, much money it saved when the Northern Lights came out here? How much time off the my life had saved that it actually happened here. But this is the time of the year when you guys are doing events. There’s wine things, there’s seasonal things, there’s pumpkin patches. You guys are out spinning the wheel, aren’t you?

John Martin  17:06

We are doing that. And you know what? I kind of missed the whole I’m in that category. People like, what, what, huh, what. And so it was a memory. I missed the whole thing, but, but, yeah, it looks like you guys had some fun. Those of you that saw that, and the the range of the coverage, the people were able to see it here in the United States was,

Nestor Aparicio  17:25

well, there’s a long litany. If you go to Baltimore, positive just put northern lights or Aurora, about Borealis into the search field. You’ll see how many times in my life I’ve talked about chasing it. My wife and I flew to Spokane on a moment’s notice back in May, chasing it, it didn’t happen. Still, good story. A good pancakes there and flew home. Used all our points doing it, chasing you, just like, let’s go. It’s it’s out. Let’s do it. And we literally at 720 in our home watching baseball of all family. We’ve been watching the Indians that gig. And was an afternoon day, and I was supposed to be in yoga on the yoga mat at 730 I didn’t go to yoga that night. I bailed at 645 and the northern lights appeared out side of our door at 725 lasted a bit like a rainbow, maybe 1520 minutes it lasted, and I made I said to my wife, I may never see it again, but we cried. It was crazy. Our pictures are, have you seen my pictures of the Northern

John Martin  18:16

I have? I have visited and seen your pictures. They are, they are very they’re the real

Nestor Aparicio  18:21

Northern Lights, just like you guys, that’s what I understand. Real lottery tickets when you’re spinning these ones. Where are you guys going to be here? Event wise? And we also have a Halloween thing going on, like it’s a spooky season here, right?

John Martin  18:31

Promotions are going on non stop. Hollow win is a great promotion. It’ll run through the month of October, obviously, where, if you buy a pick three, pick four, pick five. Ticket. On a random basis, you may win a cash prize of $5,000 or actually the the random basis is the is the $2 fast play ticket. There’ll be drawings for the cash prizes of 5000 $10,000 but yeah, Halloween, MD, lottery.com. For more details. Events, we’re gonna be out in the marketplace. You know, it’s one of these days where we’re gotta be in two places at once. So we’re split up the team, and we will be at where would be. We’ll be at the bar. Barktober Fest,

Nestor Aparicio  19:18

oh, with the doggies. All right, I like that. You

John Martin  19:21

know what? It is? It possible. It’s, it’s, it seems like that came up too quick.

Nestor Aparicio  19:26

What I get? We did it last year, and anything for the dogs against and I friends at work, at barks. Love you, Kate. So taking care of the animals, I just put this funny picture up on the screen because, like, it’s the Halloween season. People are coming, like, in costume, to claim $68,000 prizes. I mean, people really have a good time when they win. When it says, see John Martin CMD lottery, and they come and visit you this time of year, they’re they’re getting in, they’re falling into the spirit of Halloween.

John Martin  19:52

They are definitely falling in the Spirit. But we have some people who haven’t fallen yet, and we’ll get those in a second. But this weekend, yes, barktoberfest. On Saturday, but we’ll also be on the same day at the same time out in Westminster for their crab cake. Pardon me, crab cake festival. I

Nestor Aparicio  20:09

know all about this. A lot of my friends, Cocos won it last year, right? Yeah, and great myself. A bunch of my friends, clients, delicious crab cakes. I hope the weather holds so we went last year. My wife and I, I went from, I I went from, I flew into town from, I think it was on the West Coast. I flew in and we went to that event out in the field. They got great bands out there. Yeah, great event this weekend. And our friends at the Bay are putting that on. So I love those folks. Yep. So

John Martin  20:31

you got two things going on this weekend. We’ll be there. But you know, talking about people come into the to to the winner’s lounge and and claim their prizes. Unfortunately, we have a number of unclaimed prizes Nestor. And that can happen, that can happen for a number of reasons. One is, if you win a significant prize, you have 182 days from the date of the drawing, like a Powerball or Mega Millions ticket. So we always caution, get your affairs in order, seek your financial advice, your legal advice, whatever you need to do, and then come in and claim. Because once you get that, that process going, it could be a mind so

Nestor Aparicio  21:06

once I come to you, you’re like, you want a or b, from a payout standpoint, you need to know, you need to fill out the form when they come to you, right? So that right, that’s, that’s great advice. I mean, I, I think I would do that the minute that I won. You know, I wouldn’t call you first. Or if I call you first, that you would say when you come in, have it together. That’s kind of how it works when you win a million dollars, really, right? And

John Martin  21:27

you can go to MD lottery.com, if you’re, you know, see the numbers, the history of the numbers, to see if, in fact, you’re holding a winning ticket. If it does, in fact, scan on your app and says, Hey, you won a prize. We have a million dollar, Mega Millions ticket that

Nestor Aparicio  21:43

has not been claimed. The ticket was sold in Brooklyn Park at the check cash depot back on october 14, a million dollars my birthday. That was a lucky day for that. So that’s only been a week or two, though that’s unusual. If somebody’s into May or April and has a ticket of some denomination and they haven’t cashed it. I hope the dog didn’t need it, you know, right,

John Martin  22:04

right, right? Well, yeah, that’s a whole other problem. But yeah, you can go there if you’ve got a Powerball ticket. We’ve got a handful of $50,000 winners from the month of October, the first half of the month, that have still not claimed at various places around the country, from Baltimore City, Bethesda, Riverdale, Waldorf, White Plains. We don’t hear a lot from White Plains, but you know, those folks are all winners, and they can check out the website, check out the app, and make an appointment here to claim their price. All

Nestor Aparicio  22:36

you know is where it was sold, right? Like, literally,

John Martin  22:39

right, right. I mean, that’s, that’s the way the system works. But you know, when they do show up, it is kind of fun. We did have a player from Essex who a woman who stopped at at ROFO out in White Marsh, I believe there on Pulaski highway, or

Nestor Aparicio  22:55

no bad rofos in White Marsh, trust me, all fresh fried chicken. I had it for dinner last night. John Martin is here. He’s the executive director. All thanks, man, on the lottery game. Maryland lottery gaming. He joins us frequently to talk about gaming. But more than that, just not just the lottery and the Powerball being big and all of that, um, sports wagering this time of year, I just want to say to you, you and I talk about Responsible Gambling. One 800 gambler. We’ve had friends on from from Maryland, talking about what happens when you make that call. And I would just say this. Over the last few weeks, John, I’ve seen more media stories of people who’ve been affected by this, people who’ve had this problem, who have spoken out and it’s made it into the mainstream media in a way of hearing the story of really tragedy and how they got help. So I think that that’s good messaging. I just want to let you know that I’m seeing more of that in regard to, Hey, man, slow your roll. Don’t wreck your life over this. And if you have a problem, get help. Get help. If you have a problem, resources

John Martin  23:48

are available. And again, a lot of the resources are free of charge, to to to Marylanders. So if you, if you feel like you need some assistance, or if a family member, because a lot of times the calls come from a family member or business associate, someone who’s affected by the actions of the individual. One 800 gambler is probably the easiest way to do that. That’s an easy number to remember. Those folks on the other line are professionals, very skilled and adept to get you the right resources for you and your family. All right.

Nestor Aparicio  24:22

John Martin will be here next week. We will be hopefully eating some crab cakes over the weekend. On Friday, we’re going to be at mama’s on the half shell in Owings Mills at Foundry row. I call it painters mill. If I say painters mill to a guy from Ohio to you, does that mean anything to you? Or it’s just a road in Owings Mills to you, right? It is just a road to Owings mill. So I want you to Google this. There’s a little homework, and everybody my audience knows about this. Is why I’m making a big stink about this. There was a place called painters mill theater. It was called the painters mill star theater in the 60s and 70s. And it just every famous person ever, every Tony, Bennet, Dinah Shore, like they Liberace, they all. Played painters mill and it kind of went away, and it kind of came back in the 70s, some rock bands played there, The Pretenders, the police, some of those bands in like 7980 81 Alice Cooper played there, and then they had a very tragic fire. But it flooded a lot, because it was in this flood area.
