After using the same helmet design since 1999, the Ravens are introducing an alternate look to their uniform set.
On Tuesday, Baltimore unveiled a purple helmet that will be worn with its all-purple “color rush” uniforms for one game during the 2024 season. The new helmet features a gold face mask and a front-facing secondary logo that’s been part of the franchise’s identity — with minor tweaks — since its inception in 1996.
This will mark the first time that the Ravens will wear a helmet that isn’t black. The current logo has been featured on the helmet since a copyright dispute prompted the franchise to drop its original “Flying B” logo used from 1996-98.
Speaking at the NFL owners meetings in Orlando in March, team president Sashi Brown suggested subtle tweaks could be coming to the Ravens’ uniform set.
“We’re really cautious about making changes on a look that really works well,” Brown said. “The optionality that you see — particularly in other leagues — with different types of jerseys and ‘color rush,’ we’re exploring some things with some of the alternative jerseys. But as for now, we’re really happy with the way our jerseys look.”
This is the first notable addition to Baltimore’s uniform set since purple pants featuring a black and white stripe were introduced during the 2018 season.
After previously restricting teams to one helmet, the NFL afforded teams the option to begin using an alternate-color helmet for the 2022 season and will permit a third helmet beginning in 2025.
