The Ravens filled their open roster spot Sunday by claiming veteran linebacker Robert James off waivers from the Atlanta Falcons.
Third-year receiver LaQuan Williams was waived earlier in the day to create a place on the 53-man roster for James, who was a fifth-round pick in the 2008 draft. The 29-year-old has appeared in 18 games in his career, including all 16 for the Falcons last season while serving primarily on special teams.
At 5-feet-11 and 224 pounds, the Arizona State product is undersized for the linebacker position but figures to be a contributor for special teams coordinator Jerry Rosburg’s coverage units. James made 11 tackles last season.
Prior to 2012, James’ status within the Falcons organization was mostly in flux as he waived on a few occasions and bounced back and forth between the practice squad and the active roster.
