With unrest at the tight end position after the news of veteran Owen Daniels undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery this week, the Ravens promoted Phillip Supernaw from the practice squad and waived tight end Ryan Taylor ahead of Sunday’s meeting with the Cincinnati Bengals.
Rookie Crockett Gillmore is expected to start in place of Daniels, but Supernaw figures to be active and to potentially receive limited opportunities when the Ravens use two-tight sets.
Supernaw was promoted from the practice squad to the active roster earlier this year after the season-ending hip injury suffered by Dennis Pitta in Week 3 and was active against the Carolina Panthers. He was cut earlier this month when the Ravens claimed Taylor off waivers from the Green Bay Packers and then re-signed to the practice squad.
Taylor was inactive for both games he spent on the active roster.
The 24-year-old Supernaw spent two years in Houston under Gary Kubiak and was primarily a member of the Texans’ practice squad, but he did appear in one game last season. His familiarity with the system made him a logical fit from a depth standpoint.
