OWINGS MILLS, Md. — The Ravens welcomed a key member of their secondary back to practice Friday as cornerback Jimmy Smith took part on a limited basis.
Practicing for the first time since injuring his groin in the Dec. 2 loss at Pittsburgh, Smith hopes to be available against a Cleveland passing game coming off a season-high 340-yard performance in its win at Tennessee. The 32-year-old defensive back has missed two games since the Week 7 bye and has played through a number of nagging injuries this season.
While Smith returned to the field, defensive end Calais Campbell missed a second straight workout as concerns linger about his overall health. On Thursday, head coach John Harbaugh said Campbell got through the Dallas game healthy, but the five-time Pro Bowl selection labored through just 23 defensive snaps in his return from his calf strain and a COVID-19 infection that combined to cost him nearly four full games.
After being listed as a non-injury absence on Thursday, Campbell was a non-participant on Friday officially due to the calf injury. The 34-year-old also suffers from asthma, which could be a factor complicating his conditioning after dealing with the virus.
“I think just with time, he should continue to get better and better,” Harbaugh said Thursday. “He’ll be working on it this week.”
For the Browns, top cornerback Denzel Ward (calf) was again absent while starting tight end Austin Hooper missed Friday’s practice with a neck issue. It was unclear of the severity of Hooper’s injury as of Friday evening.
