It sounds like heresy but last century, “tailgating” was illegal in Baltimore. (You kids can look it up!) In 1996, when the Ravens came to the Charm City, David Modell set out to change those laws and in 1997 when the first purple trip San Diego took 200 “Nasty Nestor” listeners to Jack Murphy Stadium, we met some Chargers fans in the parking lot and made some memories. There were many, many roadtrips and more beer, sandwiches and fried chicken consumed along many highways with Gunther buses but this virgin voyage in a town that the NFL has now forgotten was truly unforgettable.
We always find it rather comical that the Orioles and Angelos family nitpicks with Major League Baseball about the City Connect jerseys. In the modern era, everything the franchise does attempts to “reconnect” with the Baltimore fan base that it spent years alienating and subjugating by pampering to Washington baseball fans with the lack of the hometown city name on the road jerseys. Our radio station, hosts and listeners spent the first decade of our existence as the hometown sports radio station trying to explain to Peter Angelos why “BALTIMORE” across the crests of the visiting grays was not just a marketing ploy or a sales pitch, but a way of life for the home team.
Serendipity followed our WNST 25th Anniversary celebration as local sports cartoonist Ricig gifted a surprise visit and local musician Ed Lauer joined Nestor at Costas Inn for a winding discussion about a quarter of a century of lousy Orioles baseball, the Bob Irsay dummy and the dream for another orange parade in Baltimore.
