Nestor Aparicio 00:01
Welcome home. We are W, N, S, T. Am 1570 Towson, Baltimore. We are Baltimore, positive. We’ve been taking the Maryland crab cake tour on the road. I had breakfast crab cakes. Had a breakfast omelet with some crab and shrimp in there. Was delicious. At State Fair on Tuesday morning, we gave away a bunch of these ravens scratch also the Maryland lottery lucky batch. Tammy, my server, won two bucks, so I felt good about that. And we’ll be back at Cocos on Wednesday of next week, and then Friday at Pizza John’s. I got some great guests coming our way next week, and really big appreciation to Cindy Atkinson for coming by and talking about her charity and starboard society with a big event next week in the Timonium Cockeysville area, as well as Dr Sunil Dasgupta from UMBC, has a podcast called I hate politics, even though he doesn’t hate politics. He’s a professor of poli sci at UMBC, and Luke and Alan came by to talk about the orange plumes of smoke that came over the warehouse. We have a new manager here, and Craig Albert as well. And I want to welcome on to the program. John Martin is away this week. He’s on assignment, like they used to say in 60 minutes in World News Tonight. Seth Elkin is here. He is our defending champion of all things baseball, of all things Maryland, lottery communications and big jackpots. This week, we had a lot of things talk about. I mean, I’m playing these Jurassic Park ads. I’m seeing the Hawaii stuff. I’m giving out Raven scratch offs. Last week it was sniffers, and I got to get up with Roz on the scented candy cane holiday version. All this. But before we do this, you and I, we got baseball between us. How late did you make it in game three? I mean, to me, that is a big barometer, because I have a story that goes along with it, but I missed most of the game, if that matters, but I did catch the beginning in the end. But how did you do Seth,
Seth Elkin 01:51
I made it until maybe the fourth or fifth inning, and I said, All right, it’s it’s going to be bedtime. My wake up time is pretty early, and then I happened to roll over in bed and check the score about 130 in the morning, it was tied in the 14th inning, and I said, All right, it’s history in the making here. Let me, let me turn on the TV, and I couldn’t turn it off after that, as much as I wanted to go back to sleep watching those two teams go back and forth like that through those scoreless innings and the tension that happens in an extra inning World Series game was something special. So I was glad that I got a chance to see that
Nestor Aparicio 02:27
I missed the 12th inning Kershaw thing. So I feel a little bad about that, but yeah, I did the same experience. I mean, I had the football game on too, and I just turned to my wife at about 10 after nine. I’m like, I’m just not gonna make it. I’m not like, I’m 50, seven, I know my I like, I’m going to fall asleep. I’m not going to make it, and I’m not going to do it uncomfortable, like sort of on our love sack, our bean bag. I mean, I’m going to bed. So I went to bed and I wrote it off, and I woke up at two in the morning because I’m 57 I have to pee. And I walked across the house to pee, and I came back and fumbled for my glasses, and because I’m like, was it Daphne on Scooby Doo without my glasses? So I you know not what Daphne it was. Yeah, it was Daphne, right now, Daphne was the blonde. What was her name? Sabrina. I don’t know. Velma. Velma. Velma. Thank you. Yeah, Velma. Couldn’t see, so I tried my glasses, like Velma. I looked down and I’m and like, my app still had, like, baseball, football on it from the Chiefs game. And I saw, Oh, okay, the chiefs beat the snot out of the commanders. Are great. And then I hit the baseball thing, and it said, 17th inning, five, five. And it was like, it was 232 you know, 232 something like that. When I went to the bathroom, I came back in, and I put the game on, and it was like on, and that dude was pitching the fifth inning, whoever the hell he was, the guy that they just brought up, the guy with the beard looked like it should have been Philly, because all the Phillies look like John Kruk, right, literally, or Jason worth when he had the Jesus look. So I hear my wife cough out of the bedroom like at 230 in the morning. I’m like, All right, hey, are you awake? I am now. I’m like, hey, the baseball game still going on. It’s the 17th inning. She got up, she ran in. We watched the end, we saw the home run, and then we couldn’t go back to bed because it was 10 after three in the morning. I mean, it was a memory for anybody loves baseball, and then seeing Shohei pitch the next night, poor sob. I felt like, oh, man, hey. You know, I don’t know that any more has ever been asked of a player ever than what the Dodgers ask of Otani on Game four.
Seth Elkin 04:36
You’re seeing something truly special when you watch him. It’s literally once in a century. You know, a century ago, you had Babe Ruth, who could do those things, hit and pitch, and now you’ve, 100 years later, you’ve got Joey Otani. So it’s, it’s something special, all
Nestor Aparicio 04:49
right, three game series as we get here. So we got the World Series, and then we have Raven scratch offs. But more than that, we got big jackpots. I just want to leave with the jackpots, because that’s where my. Five starts over 750 million in Mega Millions getting up on 400 million with with Powerball just that’s it’s a big deal when it gets to be these numbers,
Seth Elkin 05:10
yeah, more than a billion dollars worth of jackpots. As you mentioned, that Mega Millions coming up as past that $750 million mark. 754 million is the estimated annuity value for the next drawing coming up later this week, and then Powerball has rounded its way past 370, $5 million so we’re in, we’re in getting into high jackpot territory. It’s some big prizes out there waiting to be won, and some excitement as we close in on toward the end of the year. Here kind of, kind of, kind of excited about that. And I know players love the jackpot games when the jackpots get high, so we’re looking forward to seeing we can get some wins here.
Nestor Aparicio 05:47
I love seeing the ads where the beach thing for Jurassic Park, but before I get to that, because that’s in season, nothing more in season than this. And I’ll be honest with you, when I whip these out this time of year, you always say to me, but saying it for years, as long as long as I’ve had a relationship with Baltimore positive and Marilyn Lauder, this is the most popular game, the Raven scratch off times too. I gave one of these away to at State Fair, and she said, I want $100 on that game the other night. And I’m thinking like, so must be a lucky batch, but, but it is the most popular game you play. And this, we’re into the heart of the heart of second chances right now, and tickets for 20 years and all of that. And I don’t know if you noticed, Mr. Steeler guy, because I’ve been in your office, Ravens won. So you know, it’s a we haven’t had a lot of that around here, so I want to get a little good mojo before Thursday night begins, and at least promote the Raven scratch off, because we have a bunch of winners, and they’re all local, and they’re all Ravens fans,
Seth Elkin 06:40
yeah, and we had actually a really special story connected with one of our ravens Second Chance winners. Four of the winners in the second chance promotion won season tickets for this year for 2025 and along with that prize comes a $500 shopping spree at the team store. The Ravens just completely revamped the team store at MNC Bank Stadium. They call it the flock shop now looks great in there. We saw some pictures and some video from the last few days, because we had our winners go and do their shopping sprees here in the last couple days. And one of our winners had a really special time with it, Doug gadeske, who is a former Maryland resident. He lived here. He told us from 1988 to 2023 he’s retired. Now. He lives in New Hampshire, but still spends a lot of time here in Maryland, attending ravens games and Orioles games and Navy football. He’s a big Maryland sports fan, and he was one of our second chance winners of this prize, and he made arrangements to donate his shopping spree to Kennedy Krieger. And so we had a really special time over there. Kennedy Krieger worked with us, and worked with with with Douglas to help us identify one of their patients. And we had an occasion over there at the end of last week to to have them come and do the shopping spree together. And a really special time and something that,
Nestor Aparicio 08:01
just as a young person, a child that was, it was a guy,
Seth Elkin 08:04
actually, who has been a Kennedy Krieger patient since he was a child. He’s in his 30s now. Oh, okay, but and a big Ravens fan, yep. So what do you pick out?
Nestor Aparicio 08:14
That’s what I want to know. 500 bucks in a T store. I know things are, can be a little bit pricey. Get the NFL merchandising level, you can pick out a nice jersey and
Seth Elkin 08:24
Real Deal stuff. He got a Tyler loop jersey, was what he picked. So, all right, and a couple of other things. So he and his brother and his mom were there with him, and
Nestor Aparicio 08:33
black, white or purple, because I have to ask now, because there’s because, as you know, even I mean, dude, I saw those pajamas you guys ran around in a Sunday night. You know,
Seth Elkin 08:43
we’re gonna skip over the whatever the that excuse for store uniforms. Actually, we’re gonna skip over that entire game. We’re just not going to talk about that. But
Nestor Aparicio 08:51
I’m trying to skip over September as a Ravens, the focus though, of course,
Seth Elkin 08:55
with our second chance winners, and that was a really special occasion. And we, we have great thanks for the Ravens Doug for for working with us to put that together. That was a really special occasion, and got a little news coverage out of it as well. So we were really happy about that. And then a couple of the other Second Chance winners, Lester Thomas from Middle River and Brandon mazaro from Essex had their shopping sprees a couple of days ago, and Candace Davis from Upper Marlboro is still yet to do hers, but she was also a winner of this same prize. So a lot of fun involved with us for that, and we were really glad to get a chance to participate in that and work with our partners at the ravens and Kenny Gregor to pitch in that, to help us put that together.
Nestor Aparicio 09:37
So look, if you know how happy people are when they went two bucks or five bucks or five bucks when I give him a scratch off out on the Maryland crab cake tour. By the way, we’ll be at Cocos next Wednesday. We’re pizza John’s on Friday. Come on, I got great guest at Cocos. I’m lining some stuff up at Pizza John’s as well to do something special for the honor Craig heist, who loved pizza John’s as well. We lost him a couple weeks ago, but as far as you know, rounding up the. Troops and bringing people together and experiential fun. We have Ravens. We have a trip to Cincinnati in a couple of weeks. Ravens fans are gonna be doing that this unlock the thing that you do down at your building that is a little bit money Hall. I don’t know that it’s Halloween. People dress up. We have Halloween, another competition that’s ending here this week with Halloween. But like, I see this at MD lottery.com I know we talked about it. I kind of forgot about it because I got all wrapped up in ravens and Jurassic Park and jackpots and all that. But you do this really fun thing with these safes. And I told John, I said it kind of reminded me of the Geraldo thing with the Chicago and, you know, but because there could be something in there, but at least it’s not like, let’s make a deal where it’s going to be like farm animals or something, you know. So you’re not, you’re not winning a goat or anything, but it is kind of neat that you come down and you dream up these interesting, experiential, little fun, maybe you’ll win a whole lot of money, things,
Seth Elkin 11:00
I would venture to say, first of all that it’s a lot more fun than the Geraldo Rivera safe incident, because that didn’t end well, there’s actually something in the safes that we have for people to open, but yeah, the the unlock the cash live game. It’s a second chance promotion that’s connected with with two of our tickets, you can enter any $10 worth of break the bank scratch offs or cash combination fast play tickets into your My lottery rewards account. And we still have one more of these drawings left to go that’s coming up on November the sixth. So you have through November the fifth to enter, and you could be one of the two contestants to come down for that last event we had. We’ve had two of them so far where the the two winners come in, they each get to open two safes out of six that we have across the the front of
Nestor Aparicio 11:46
the room. Gotta see this in MD, live. I’m just saying, go out to the website. It’s visual, and I can’t visualize it, but it, it does seem like, of all the things you can win, this one seems fun to me, like it’s
Seth Elkin 11:56
fun. You you pick, they each pick a combination, and then they see which of the six safes opens up, and inside of each safe there is an envelope containing a prize amount. And the largest of the prizes in those envelopes is $15,000 there’s also a $10,000 prize, and there are also $2,500 prizes and the potential to win books of scratch off tickets. So we had the second of those three events just a couple of days ago, and you’ll be able, as you said, to see the video on on our social media and on our website coming up here real soon as we put that together. But we had two winners that were here. Tanya Shreve from Brooklyn Park won $17,500 she got that $15,000 envelope, and she got a 2500 as well, and then Sally Drake from Joppa town won $5,000 and also won a book of unlock the break the bank, scratch off tickets, so chance to win a little bit more with those tickets. So it was a fun it’s a fun event. It’s a interactive event, which is something that I think we’ll look to build on as we go forward when we do our second chance promotions. A lot of them, as you say, are experiential. You mentioned the the Jurassic Park ticket that’s connected with a chance to win a trip to Hawaii, and the the Ravens tickets and Second Chance promotion with the chance to win ravens themed prizes. But we’re trying to come up with some other fun, interactive things for our second chance winners to do, and we’ve had a good time with unlock the cash and fun time for Tanya and Sally as they came here a few days ago and won some cash. So something to look forward to again. One more entry deadline coming up on that November the fifth. You’ve got until then to get your tickets in, and you could be the one of the last two contestants to get a chance to
Nestor Aparicio 13:35
do that. There’s a whole game show part of like, do it, of that competition that I kind of like, you know what I mean, you can’t have a whole game show. Make it more of a treasure hunt. I love that.
Seth Elkin 13:45
Yep, it’s, it’s fun. That’s, that’s the fun part of this that I think we, we kind of focused on is, how can we make this experience interactive, make it something a little extra special for the second chance win. You
Nestor Aparicio 13:55
guys give millions and millions of dollars away. I talk about this all the time. You know, there’s 30 some odd million dollar winners in this state every year, on average, and but you don’t get to see the look on their face when they win, right? There’s only a few of these things that like, literally, you do in front of people. Most of it happens. I get to see it. Sometimes when I’m out, I’ll see somebody, I’ll see him light up, though. It’s like, bingo, dude. When people win, they hold their ticket up like they they look at it and they’re like, they go, they wave it. And I like, so I literally, I mean it’s, I don’t, it’s maybe human nature. Seth Falcon is here. He communicates for the Maryland lottery. He joins us whenever John can’t join us, and usually that’s after a Cleveland loss or something like that. I can give you Pittsburgh and Cleveland guys a hard time, but like you feel good for Flacco, right? Even though he beat like you feel good for him or no? Ah, yeah, no comment. Jeez, man, you can’t hate on Joe Flacco.
Seth Elkin 14:48
Yeah, you know what he’s he’s been a division rival for so many years, it’s hard to look the other
Nestor Aparicio 14:52
way at St Joseph Vincent Flacco, to you, I feel that way about Roethlisberger, don’t worry. But I don’t feel the way about burrow yet, or never felt that way back. Arson Palmer and certainly the Browns have never had a quarterback long enough that I didn’t like maybe John Watson. But other than that, as far as winners and local winners, we’ve had some fun stories. I want to give you a little oxygen. You love talking about winners and people coming in. I hope we get somebody winning the 750, $4 million or upward, or that here in Maryland, we need a jackpot here. We need a giant Maryland jackpot soon, but in the meantime, you’re giving money away all the time, and people are having fun
Seth Elkin 15:28
stories. Yep, we we do this every day. As you mentioned, you know, we get to see the winners. We don’t maybe see that look on their face that you do when they’ve scratched off and they find out right in that moment that they’ve won. By the time a lot of the winners get to us, when they come in to redeem their tickets, they’ve had a little bit of time to process the fact that they’ve won. So we do get some some fun reactions. I remember one we brought a winner into the winner’s circle room to talk to them, and we had our our staff gathered there to clap for them. And when we opened the door, the person had a big smile on her face, and she pulled out her phone and took a picture of us standing there clapping for her, which I thought was fun. We don’t, we don’t often get that reaction because, like, I say, a lot of people have kind of had their time to to process what’s going on, and they’re there, like, literally, to pick the check up, right? Like they’re there to file their paperwork. Sometimes depends on the amount of the of the prize, if the filing
Nestor Aparicio 16:21
paperwork, we don’t ever talk about that, but like, there is, there’s a tax this, as I say to Martin all the time, it’s just on the up and up. So when you come in, it’s on the up and up. But people are really excited, and they’re driving, sometimes they’re driving into the city from somewhere else in the state to pick up their checks and and you literally get to see them. And I’ve been in your offices, the buddy rugo room. I’ve worn some of the purple boas and fun pictures of being a winner, but there’s that moment where they get the check. That’s fine.
Seth Elkin 16:46
Yep, they it’s, it’s something that’s special. I think you realize pretty quickly. Occurred to me, you know, 10 years ago, when I, when I got here and I started meeting winners on a regular basis, you you’re meeting them on one of the best days of their life. You know, probably gonna. It’s not every day that they’re gonna, that they’re gonna claim a $50,000 prize or $100,000 prize. It’s something special with something that stands out so and we enjoy being able to celebrate that with them and tell their stories. It’s a lot of fun for us.
Nestor Aparicio 17:13
I have a lot of fun just coming out and visiting with you, even sitting in your office amongst all the Terry Bradshaw stuff and Jack Lambert stuff. But when I give the tickets out, it really, there is a Santa Claus feeling about a chance to win that everybody, we want to remind everybody play responsibly. We did a big thing here. Seth, couple weeks ago, when you weren’t here, you always are doing it. But the week that we did, it was talking about September numbers and slowing the roll and being careful of what’s going I mean, ravens play twice this week, right? So for people that have that have a proclivity to be involved in this. And I don’t need to tell you, you followed the NBA last week. You follow what happened with the ravens and the injury report last week. Anything you want to say on that, because we’re always trying to be respectful of people having a good time. And I see people having a good time, but I I’m always concerned, and I always like to voice that concern when I do these segments with
Seth Elkin 18:00
y’all Yep, the same message that we always give, as you say, slow your roll. You if it’s sports betting that you’re talking about, you just never know what’s going to happen. You like to think that you have some understanding and knowledge and can predict, but sometimes you just can’t see what’s coming and you just have no idea. And this time of year, we also like to remind people with the holiday scratch offs that have launched a lot of people like to give holiday tickets as a gift, and it’s very important for us to remind people that lottery tickets are not an appropriate gift to give to anyone who’s younger than 18. You have to be at least 18 years old by law to buy lottery tickets or to participate in anything that the lottery does. So please, as you’re buying your holiday scratch offs, we have six different holiday scratch offs that just came out a couple of weeks ago, please make sure that anybody that you give them to is at least 18, and play responsibly and gift responsibly this holiday season.
Nestor Aparicio 18:56
I always do that too when I’m out, because people, I mean, Costas is a family joints, those Cocos, those Pizza John, certainly a family joint. So play it out responsibly. Do all that. You know, I don’t, I don’t think I left any stone unturned, other than we’re about to turn the page on Halloween. We’re in the middle of Jurassic Park, and I’m seeing all that beachy stuff and making me think about my friends in Jamaica and also in Hawaii, as there’s a, there’s a giveaway. But last week was big here, and you missed out on this. It was the the unveiling of the scented holiday ticket, which is, if the Ravens is your most popular. My favorite are the scented tickets, because they make my bag smell really good during the holiday. My bag smell like gingerbread, like through March and peppermint two years ago, and then last year, you came in with that special snowflake scented ticket that John Martin told me about last year. I think he duped me for a week or two. This year, you guys started in on me, probably right around we did start a Jurassic Park. I’m like, are we doing sniffers? Because it’s
Speaker 1 19:56
important to me smell good. You got to call him scented tickets, not sniffers. Said. The tickets. All right, I’m
Nestor Aparicio 20:01
done. This is official. You now know I’ve been chastised properly by both of you. It’s
Seth Elkin 20:05
the $3 candy cane cash, which is the scented ticket this year. It’s one of six holiday themed tickets that launched on October 17, and they
Nestor Aparicio 20:16
all have fun names. Can I read them? Go ahead.
Seth Elkin 20:22
Festive fortune, gifts of green, just Bell bucks. I love just one buck with the with the buck with the deer on it. So with a couple of different scenes of that, I
Nestor Aparicio 20:34
bought the gifts of green. And you can make any you know, side joke you want about gifts of green, but as long as it doesn’t smell like juniper. You know what Juniper smells like? I don’t it’s awful. My wife had this wreath that she put in the hallway, and we lived in a condo, and every year the it smelled like cat pee, pee, and so it was juniper. And so when I see anything that looks like Juniper or like Christmas trees, I’m much more about gingerbread and much more. So these candy, they’re going to smell like peppermint tea a little
Seth Elkin 21:06
bit, right? Like a candy cane, right? Yep, that’s, that’s the scented ticket for this year. And I’m
Nestor Aparicio 21:09
going to come see Roz, and I promise that the minute we get through the pumpkin and the pumpkin spice and the pumpkin pie, I’m going to have scented lottery tickets here, and I’m not going to call them the other I’m calling scented because it’s official, but they’re going to smell good, and I’m going to give them
Seth Elkin 21:24
away. And all six of these tickets, not just the scented ticket, but all six of the holiday tickets, are part of the holiday cash and dash Second Chance promotion. We actually just had the first drawing in that we have weekly drawings where we’ll be giving away $5,000 prizes, and one of the four winners in the first of those drawings is from your homeland, Courtney Floyd of Dundalk. Hi Courtney was a $5,000 winner, along with Stephanie work from Salisbury, Joshua Passman from Cockeysville and Cosmo Scott from College Park. So they were the first four, but they’re going to be weekly winners of $5,000 prizes as we go forward here all the way into January, and then in the the grand prize in this second chance promotion is the chance to go to Chicago and participate in the dash shopping spree, where you get 90 seconds to run through the warehouse of prizes and grab as many items off the shelf and throw them in your cart as you Can. So that’s a really fun Second Chance prize that we know people enjoy. We haven’t had that second chance prize with our holiday promotion in a couple of years, so we’re glad to bring that back and and that’s just getting started. So you got all kinds of time to to get your tickets in on that. Any of the non winning holiday tickets can be entered into my lottery rewards to get in on the cash and dash Second Chance promotion,

yeah, I don’t know who’s but I’m kissing here at the Maryland lottery right now. But I just say you’re marketing people, thumbs up this year. You know, these are fun. These are weird. There’s a funky Chicago. I even found out from John last week. And I don’t know if you know this about me, but I was nationally syndicated for three years. Turn of the century, I had to fly in and out of Chicago for three and a half years. Northbrook, the whole deal, the Wrigley Building, Chicago, my kind of town. It’s my kind of town in late spring. So this thing I heard, you’re not going to have to go to Chicago like in January, like I did for Springsteen, when it was 10 degrees. This is a spring. This is a nice time trip. I love Chicago. I love it in the spring. That’s like another Sinatra sub that was Paris in the spring. But this is wild, right? Like, this is a shopping spree. This is kind of fun,
Seth Elkin 23:31
yeah, it’s a it’s a nice trip. And you get a chance to spend a couple of days in Chicago, which, as you say, anybody that’s ever been there knows how much fun it can be to spend some time there. I had a chance to go to Chicago on my own a couple years ago. Went to Wrigley Field for the first time. So you get a chance to go in the spring, while baseball season is going on, maybe you can take in a Cubs game or a White Sox game too. So good, good prize, and something that we’re glad to be able to, as I say, glad to be able to bring back

statue of my cousin, center field, it’s more like left center field shaded under the stadium on the south side, and get the low taste when you go to Comiskey Park. You got to do that. And by the way, there’s nothing better than watching baseball from Dodger Stadium and a World Series game. So I went to dodge stadium last month for a game just baseball heads. You’re one. I’m one. Hey, I don’t know who’s going to win the World Series, but it’s been a good one. Then I get everything in Seth Elkin from the Maryland lottery, because I want to make sure we’re communicating all things we
Seth Elkin 24:25
need to communicate. Yep, lots and lots of activity going on, lots of Second Chance promotions, lots of jackpots to be paying attention to. So busy time for us.

MD lottery.com, I always encourage folks to download the app. That’s the easiest way. I had some folks the other day at State Fair want to know if they won or not. I’m pulling out my app, and I’m there’s a little scanner on there. Boom, price. Check you got it. And when you win, like, balloons go off, and it’s like you’re a winner. So I like that. We got to come up with something, you know, other than non winning and second chance. But I’m more. Working on that. But the Maryland lottery marketing people doing a good job of doing
Seth Elkin 25:03
shopping. You remember scented? We’re in good shape.
Nestor Aparicio 25:07
Scented, scented sounds like a candle to me. You know, scented candles and a scratch off ticket too. All right, candy. My bag will smell like candy cane for the holidays. My cat will probably like that as well. I am Nestor. We are W, N, S T. Am 1570 Towson, Baltimore. And hey, if you want to get a Maryland lottery, scratch off ticket. Come see me at Cocos on Wednesday, come see me pizza John’s in Essex on Friday, we are doing the Maryland crab cake tour. We are Baltimore positive. Stay with us.
