Honorable mention: Big Benโs broken beak โ Dec. 5, 2010; first win at Three Rivers โ Dec. 12, 1999
Sure, the Ravens lost the game in the final minutes, but what Baltimore fan didnโt revel in the sight of Ben Roethlisberger walking off the field a bloody mess in the first quarter of that Sunday night encounter.
In all seriousness, the bloody scene epitomized the brutality of the rivalry and how players โ including Terrell Suggs who, essentially playing with one arm, recorded two sacks in the 2008 AFC Championship game โ have often performed admirably at less than 100 percent.
The subject of Roethlisbergerโs broken nose was broached earlier this week with John Harbaugh humorously tossing some kindling to the rivalry fire with this comment:
โHeโs a tough guy. He had the broken nose. I was glad we broke his nose and then I was very impressed that he played through it. Obviously, you can throw very effectively with a broken nose. He proved that.โ
A far cry from the trash-talking days of Joey Porter and Shannon Sharpe, but it will have to suffice for this week.
In 1999, the Ravens earned their first victory at Three Rivers Stadium behind Qadry Ismailโs 258 receiving yards and three touchdowns, continuing a strong late-season surge that would roll into the 2000 championship season.
