The 2011 Defensive Player of the Year Terrell Suggs took part in his first team workout of the offseason on Tuesday and looked noticeably trimmer than he did last season in recovering from a torn Achilles tendon suffered in the spring.
Suggs walked out to the practice field with running back Ray Rice looking 10 pounds lighter than he did last season when some criticized the rush linebacker for being out of shape when he made his accelerated return in mid-October.
“He’s healthy and he’s in great shape,” Harbaugh said. “He looked tremendous out there. We dove right into a very fast practice. It’s his first football practice in his offseason program, and he didn’t seem to have any problem at all. He looked good.”
The five-time Pro Bowl selection also played with a torn right biceps over the final two months of the season while being limited to a career-low two sacks. His performance perked up in the postseason, but the Ravens are depending on Suggs to look more like the wrecking ball he was in 2011 when he accumulated 14 sacks and seven forced fumbles, both career highs.
His presence at the mandatory practice brought an increased level of chatter welcomed by at least one teammate on the opposite side of the ball.
“It’s always fun to have him out here,” Flacco said. “He’s one of the guys that likes to talk a little bit at practice and make things a little bit more interesting.”
Practice role call
In addition to Yanda, defensive tackle Terrence Cody (hip surgery) and offensive lineman Antoine McClain (foot surgery) were absent from the field during Tuesday’s practice.
Cornerback Lardarius Webb (knee) and linebackers Jameel McClain (spinal cord contusion) and Albert McClellan (shoulder surgery) all did individual work on a limited basis. Inside linebacker Arthur Brown (sports hernia surgery) participated in several individual and team drills in what was another positive sign that he’ll be 100 percent by the start of training camp.
Wide receiver Marlon Brown (knee) and defensive lineman Kapron Lewis-Moore (knee) were present but did not participate.
