The Orioles may or may not have chosen their next manager.

After The Athletic and USA Today said Baltimore would hire Chicago Cubs bench coach Brandon Hyde, general manager Mike Elias labeled those reports “premature” on Tuesday night. The executive told reporters in Las Vegas that a hire was unlikely to be completed before the conclusion of the Winter Meetings on Thursday.

The 45-year-old Hyde has been with the Cubs organization since 2012, serving as minor league field coordinator, director of player development, bench coach, and first base coach at different points. Prior to his time in Chicago, he spent nine seasons in the Miami Marlins organization as a minor league coach and manager and major league bench coach.

Hyde is one of six candidates to interview for the Orioles’ managerial opening, a list that reportedly includes Seattle bench coach Manny Acta, Arizona vice president of player development Mike Bell, Kansas City quality control-catching coach Pedro Grifol, Washington bench coach Chip Hale, and Colorado bench coach Mike Redmond.

The next Orioles manager will become the 20th in club history dating back to 1954.
