Nestor Aparicio 0:01
Welcome home. We are WNST AM 1570 Tass of Baltimore. We are Baltimore positive. We are positively here at Pizza Johns. The box right behind me said so. I changed my whole view here because I wanted the view into the Emporium where all the ice cream is, but instead I just got boxes here, which is even better. So I brought to you by friends at the Maryland Lottery. I have the new Raven scratch-offs. I gave number one to Jessica Vallis of Harford Designs. She was my first guest here at Pizza Johns. Number two goes to Dr. Steve Elliot of the Elliott Chiropractic Life Center on Joppa Road. He’s been my chiropractor for it says 26 years, like right here, but it’s actually going to be 28 years very soon. How are you, man? What’s going on? Nice flowered shirt. You guys, Oriole season there?

Steve Elliott 0:45
No, Fridays. Every Friday is a Hawaiian shirt day in my office. You and your

Nestor Aparicio 0:50
mom watching Oriole baseball together, or what’s happening here?

Steve Elliott 0:53
Yeah, several days a week. Yeah, I’m not there every game, but quite a few.

Nestor Aparicio 0:58
Yeah,

Steve Elliott 0:58
yeah. It’s been. It’s uh. It’s always fun, right? Do you want to do any

Nestor Aparicio 1:02
baseball in this? I mean, because like I could do baseball, I could do. I mean, we have a lot of doors we could we could do. But you’re wearing Oriole orange, and it is trading deadline week. And I figure your kids are gambling on it. You and your mom are watching us, so you know it’s perfect.

Steve Elliott 1:15
I hadn’t I hadn’t really thought about talking about the Orioles. It’s interesting to see where they are. I mean, that little winning streak was sort of made me feel good about absolutely, but but I mean, you know, it’s I as much as we feel they may be underperforming. At the same time, you know, it keeps my mom entertained.

Nestor Aparicio 1:40
It does, right?

Steve Elliott 1:41
Isn’t

Nestor Aparicio 1:42
that what it’s for? It’s

Steve Elliott 1:43
supposed to be fun, right?

Speaker 1 1:44
Right.

Steve Elliott 1:44
In some way or other. So, so

Nestor Aparicio 1:46
she’s not canceling her mashing subscription after the training. Who?

Steve Elliott 1:49
No. No. She is. She is in from the beginning.

Nestor Aparicio 1:52
All right. Well, tell Mama said hello. We, you know, I’ve known Steve a long time as my chiropractor and all that, and we try to have some fun here. You, you want to give a chiropractic speech to start the thing, and just about my back and this silly padded seat that I forgot and drove around all day without hurt my back. Was in with you at seven in the morning after I left the gym, and I’ll just say this about getting older because I’ve only. She told me this story, and it’s like this is the history of my side of town. How many times I’ve been on 95, been on Boston Street, been in Canton, been in Fell’s Point, the future a little Italy. All of that would have changed with a political decision to to make essentially O’Donnell and Boston Street freeways.

Steve Elliott 11:32
Yep, I mean, but that’s that’s the sort of history of of urban development for the last 100 years, right? In Seattle,

Nestor Aparicio 11:40
they did that, and they’ve now ripped the freeway out, Boston too, and they’ve built a park. So if you’ve been to downtown Seattle 15 years, 10 years ago, for my baseball tour in 15, it was a freeway that was getting gutted. They’ve now completely turned it into a harbor place in downtown Seattle. That freeway is under the ground now. That freeway does not sit, and this changed in the in the last 10 years. So this is also the undoing of harbor place being such a great idea 45 years ago, and then not being that, and me paying the price for living across the street from there and losing my ass in my own property value in the city versus like what the next generation of vision is going to be for all of this stuff for for everything right. Well, and I

Steve Elliott 12:29
find it interesting the way decisions are made in those in those aspects and and who suffers right which neighborhood is is destroyed or blocked off or you know, and a lot of those are political slash economic decisions that are made, unfortunately, by folks that are not the shareholders in the in the end result. Well, that’s why we

Nestor Aparicio 12:51
vote. We try to vote, right? We

Steve Elliott 12:52
try. That’s why everybody

Nestor Aparicio 12:53
should vote.

Steve Elliott 12:54
Yeah, but there are folks that are either unable to or not in the socioeconomic groups that that pursue that, and they have a tendency to be the ones that suffer most, unfortunately. But that’s that’s just kind of the nature of. Listen, you know, I’m not going to get into the whole history of of redlining in Baltimore, but it’s there. There’s a book on it.

Nestor Aparicio 13:15
Antero Patilla wrote a beautiful book on that, by the way. So, but

Steve Elliott 13:18
I mean, these decisions are made typically without the input of the shareholders. So with the key bridge

Nestor Aparicio 13:24
going down, incidentally, makes me think of you because your location at LA Chiropractic lies right next to the freeway, right, right on the beltway, right on the beltway, dude. The amount of traffic on the beltway since the bridge went down

Steve Elliott 13:35
changed.

Nestor Aparicio 13:36
It’s stunning, isn’t? I mean, it really is stunning. I got trapped coming back from Alan’s mother’s funeral, Randallstown, coming to your office to get to go to my my yoga appointment on Thursday night, and I sat in traffic, and I text my wife from traffic, and I’m like, “This is the worst traffic experience I’ve had in Baltimore in memory in my marriage, and I live downtown, live in Towson, you know, like White Marshall lived in Perry Hall. Like I just that bridge going down has changed a lot. It’s just a lot. Like people trying to get to your office to get adjusted, right? Like literally, you’re at the you’re Perry Parkway. Yeah. People come in every day and say it took me in afternoon traffic. It’s just different. I think it’s changed our lives around here a little bit. Yeah,

Steve Elliott 14:21
I mean, certainly has. I mean, especially those folks that are coming up from the south. I mean, would it have been easier for them to go around the the beltway counterclockwise to my office because I’m at sort of like 1o’clock on the beltway, if we put it that way. Sure. And you know, at 4o’clock that bridge is gone. I mean, on the clock of the beltway. Sure. Right. So if you’re coming in at 5o’clock on the belt, hey up 95, and you didn’t want to go through the tunnel, and you, you know, there are people that are not able to go through the tunnel because of the type of vehicle they drive, and all of a sudden that changes everything. I think

Nestor Aparicio 14:51
about the political decisions to build the tunnel. Like I was in Philly two weeks ago, and I’m in the subway in Philly, and thinking who would have the political. Juice to build a subway in any city from scratch again. The kind of capital it would take, the kind of project it is. We can’t get this bridge built this from here. I can see right, right. Can you imagine building a like? And I think about the marvel of it and the American ingenuity, power. we can do hard things, as moms say to their kids, right? And I think about that all the time. And I’m thinking, like, doing hard things, making hard decisions, whatever they are, as a society. These are the type of deep thoughts that I have with my chiropractor all the time. But part of this is just a silly bridge going down a couple of years ago, and how to figure that out, how to navigate that as a state, as a community, as a country, as red and blue. All of it. Who’s going to pay for it? Whose fault is it? Was it a conspiracy? I don’t care. We need to get the bridge put back. Right. So

Steve Elliott 15:54
think about the political will in order to be able to do these things, right? And the ability to the ability to present an argument and make the sale on that argument. In other words, to to actually have yeah, we

Nestor Aparicio 16:06
didn’t need it anyway. How many cars go across? Critical thinking, right? Critical

Steve Elliott 16:10
thinking that that allows us to come to a conclusion that that might not be the greatest for everybody, so to speak. And some people might, you know, not not enjoy it as much, but in the the larger sort of perspective, it worked better for all as many people as possible. So, have you ever heard of a guy named John Rawls? Sure. Yeah. Right. So that whole concept of of justice as you know fairness, right? So his concept of of the the veil of secrecy, right? So or shouldn’t say secrecy. It’s a so the concept being that you don’t know where you sit in the class of you don’t know your gender, you don’t know your race, you don’t know your your income, you don’t know. But you’re going to make a decision based upon you know how do we build a society going forward, right? How do we build a society going forward? And I don’t know where I sit in that society. So you’re going to make a sort of a self-interest decision, as we all do, but you don’t know what yourself is. So sounds like an

Nestor Aparicio 17:14
independent voter.

Steve Elliott 17:15
Yeah, kind of like that.

Nestor Aparicio 17:17
Unaligned, or at least theoretically, you’d like to think you’re not aligned, that you’re on each issue.

Steve Elliott 17:23
Well, you want to. You’re trying to make the best choice for as many people as possible, and you’re trying to also make that’s

Nestor Aparicio 17:28
more egalitarian, right? Trying

Steve Elliott 17:30
to make it actually.

Nestor Aparicio 17:32
I guess is that. I think that’s the right word. Yeah, I. You know, I think that works. Let me go to my thesaurus here and look up. By the way, Dr. Steve Elliot is here. Tell me what you do, basically.

Steve Elliott 17:44
I’m a chiropractor, pal. That’s it. Right. I I evaluate and that’s exact

Nestor Aparicio 17:49
word I wanted

Steve Elliott 17:49
egalitarian.

Nestor Aparicio 17:50
The perfect word means believing that all people are equal and should have the same rights, freedoms, and chances in life. It’s egalitarian opportunity,

Steve Elliott 17:59
right? So you want describing a

Nestor Aparicio 18:00
system, law, or way of life focused on fairness, sharing, and removing big differences in social class, wealth, or power.

Steve Elliott 18:07
Right. So one of Rawls’s big big points is that if if there are going to be inequalities in a society and you can’t get around the inequalities, the inequalities should always favor the poorest amongst you. So in other words, those folks should get the most bump for whatever the inequality is. They should get the best bang out of it, as opposed to those folks that have more. Right. So let’s just say somebody who’s in the in the poorest segment of society gets equity

Nestor Aparicio 18:33
versus equitable versus equal.

Steve Elliott 18:37
Right.

Nestor Aparicio 18:38
Equitable.

Steve Elliott 18:38
Right. Right. You’re trying to you’re trying to improve those that have the least most. I

Nestor Aparicio 18:42
learned that a few years ago. I learned a lot on this show. That’s why I bring you on, Dr. Steve Elliot’s. Chiropractic Life. It is our crab cake tour, even though it’s including pizza today. Ever since I got back, GBMC, you know, I went and gave blood, and they gave me back the AA1C, a1C. You know, I needed to cut back on fattiness and fried that.

Steve Elliott 19:05
Okay.

Nestor Aparicio 19:06
I don’t think I’ve had five French fries since I gave blood back in maybe April.

Steve Elliott 19:11
Okay. So I’ve been

Nestor Aparicio 19:11
trying to be better. I’m here at Pizza John’s today, and I’m mixing a salad. I had a little pizza earlier. Okay. But like French fries and gravy, ice cream, fried chicken.

Steve Elliott 19:22
Yeah, no, yeah,

Nestor Aparicio 19:23
yes. Pizza,

Steve Elliott 19:24
yeah.

Nestor Aparicio 19:25
You know, subs. You know, in general, I like subs. But I’m not addicted to a lot of bad things. I don’t eat a lot of processed. You know this about me. I mean, I’m relatively healthy, so I eat wild main blueberries. I eat a lot of grains. I eat a lot of nuts. I eat legumes. I don’t eat a ton of meat. I don’t eat a ton of fried. I eat a lot of vegetables. I, you know, I like rice and potatoes. I can go brown and I can go sweet potato. I can get lighter. I can get off of butter. I mean, I can be good. I mean, I can be good. You know, I can moderate.

Steve Elliott 20:00
You’re saying it like it’s a, a struggle.

Nestor Aparicio 20:06
I just don’t take it all away. You know what I mean?

Steve Elliott 20:08
My patient Len, I was talking to him the other a couple weeks ago. He was talking about all of the all the things he’s working on, right? In order to stay healthy into his old age, all these things he’s working on, and I said, “Man, that sounds like a lot of work. He goes, pick your suck, pal. Pick your suck. You want it to suck now, but but not later. I was like, that’s awesome. I’m gonna I’m gonna use use that on the radio. That’s right. Pick your suck. Pick

Nestor Aparicio 20:30
your suck. Yeah. I well, that’s just it. I mean, I feel like moderation’s the key. But when I got this my chart reading back, you know, like I gotta, I’m just telling you, I got

Steve Elliott 20:42
never look.

Nestor Aparicio 20:42
I looked, and I was like, I just got out of the shower. I’m in the mirror. I’m feeling good about. I’m taking pictures of myself. I’m like, hey, you look good, dude. And then I open the my chart thing up if I can find it on here because I don’t really want to find it. I mean, I re I’m because I. It’s not a hippo if I’m if I’m reporting it on myself, but I went through this, and it really-it’s made me think about French fries and gravy in a whole different way. And I don’t really want to think about French fries and gravy that way. That’s

Steve Elliott 21:11
all. Yeah, we’ve convinced ourselves if we don’t have the cheese steak today, we’re good. But we’re going to eat the ice cream today, and then we’ll have the cheese steak tomorrow, and then we’ll have the fries the day after that. And we think we’re doing pretty well. No, no, no! I’m not like I’m not like trying to mix a salad

Nestor Aparicio 21:24
in to get away with it. But I would say this from my perspective, as an example, and this is just me. I’m going to be at Costas next Thursday in Timonium doing the show. I I was at Koco’s on a business meeting with my GBMC client. Hi, Christina, and I got a salad, and I got the coconut shrimp. I wanted the cream of crab soup. I love the cream of crab, but I didn’t do it. So what I’m trying to do is just get like I want the French fries here at Pizza John’s right now. I’m not getting the French fries today and the gravy.

Steve Elliott 22:00
Okay, so I’m just

Nestor Aparicio 22:00
trying to like cut the edges around how much pleasure I’m going to give myself. You know what I mean?

Steve Elliott 22:07
Yeah. One

Nestor Aparicio 22:07
or two little things here and again, but like I love fruit in my cereal. I love every meal I eat, so I can love a salad just as much as I can love a French fry.

Steve Elliott 22:20
Yeah, it’s difficult, and it’s funny like that. I love broccoli. It’s difficult when we when we we receive so much joy from food, right? Because then it becomes sort of an avenue for joy, as opposed to just a way to fuel the engine, right, and build the machine. So those are those are tough concepts that we deal with societally not very well. Your

Nestor Aparicio 22:42
LDL unhealthy fats are slightly elevated. Oh, come on! It’s not high enough where you need medications or further labs, but I recommend healthy lifestyle changes, including ready exercise. I’m on a yoga mat five days a week. I don’t know how much more I can plan to fit in as myself. Okay, reducing the amount of fried fatty foods. Your A 1c is in the pre diabetes range.

Steve Elliott 23:11
I think everybody’s is,

Nestor Aparicio 23:12
and the recommendation is same as above. Otherwise, labs are within normal limits. So this little thing, and I got two of them. I got another one the next day. Lipid panel and hemoglobin A1C comprehensive medical panel, and that’s it. So I that I got that on April 1st, and it was no April Fool’s joke. No, same day I hired Lock and Four. I’m just kidding. I would say that this

Steve Elliott 23:42
is basically not out of the ordinary for somebody who’s in your age group demographic, right? I just think. Are

Nestor Aparicio 23:51
you the doctor that’s going to sit here and tell me to get the French fries and the gravy right now? Because I, you know, no. I already had a milkshake for crying out loud. Right. So

Steve Elliott 23:57
why would I tell you to get French fries?

Nestor Aparicio 24:00
You’re telling me to cool out.

Steve Elliott 24:01
I’m just telling you, don’t worry about this so much. Just be smart, and you know, eat. Make a better decision once a day. Make one good, better decision once a day.

Nestor Aparicio 24:12
Thank you, GBMC, for keeping me in line. I made one really bad decision today by getting a milkshake. I had a delicious. It was a great decision, actually. I had a mint chocolate chip milkshake, and I took Brett’s advice. He offered whether I wanted the look. I sucked on it so much that I, I, they collapsed. Yeah, I still got. Oh, that’s good. I still got a little bit of mint chocolate chip at the bottom. That

Steve Elliott 24:36
thing was caved in so far, some miners passed away.

Nestor Aparicio 24:38
And I was like, so this is mint chocolate chip with I got whipped cream on it. It’s still good, dude. I mean, I want to lick. I want to. I want to get rid of the show and like I want to. I have a milk chocolate milkshake mustache. He’s a whiz.

Steve Elliott 24:51
You’ve already you’ve already maxed on all your lipids for the day. Okay. No French fries. So

Nestor Aparicio 24:56
what? No French fries. Dr. Steve is here to keep me alive and well. He’ll do that for you at LA Chiropractic Life. Tell people how they shouldn’t like call you when their back hurts. I mean, they should, but you don’t want them calling you when they’re in like massive distress. And is that

Steve Elliott 25:14
what are you talking? I’ll take that 50%

Nestor Aparicio 25:16
of your bit. Like, what percentage of people call you because they’re in like pain? Is it? It’s more than 50% That

Steve Elliott 25:22
oh yeah, vast majority. Okay, yeah. So

Nestor Aparicio 25:24
when you are in pain, call him. But there is a point where like you don’t really want these people to be in that kind of pain. I don’t want

Steve Elliott 25:30
anybody to be in pain. Right, right. You’re in business. But I, it to me, it makes sense to try and prevent some issues if we can, or if you’ve got a you know a small problem. Let’s prevent it from becoming a big problem. Big problem. You know, a lot of these small problems. We’re thinking, oh, is it going to go away? Oh, that little that little back thing right now. I’ll be fine. I’ll be fine. And then three weeks later, they bend over to pick up something like that weighs like this, and then they can’t stand up. And they’ve been getting the warning sign for a little while, but we are really good at ignoring warning signs, like really good. That’s probably one of our top, top talents as a species. So

Nestor Aparicio 26:09
it’s not that bad, right? Exactly. Exactly. I heard my dad. Ah, he’ll be put some Windex on it, right?

Steve Elliott 26:19
You’ll be fine. You’ll be fine. Toughen

Nestor Aparicio 26:21
up.

Steve Elliott 26:22
Yeah, don’t be such a sis. Don’t be such sis. Yeah. So anyway, let’s let’s let’s help help where we can when people are now. I’m going to take anybody where I find them. That’s just how I feel. I

Nestor Aparicio 26:34
know you are. I’ve seen your work,

Steve Elliott 26:35
but we’re going to do our best to make sure they don’t go through those things with any sort of regularity,

Nestor Aparicio 26:41
and he has no patient lousier than I over the course of 28 years. Dr. Steve Elliott is my chiropractor. He’s been my friend for a long time. Visit him and Allison. And so here’s what I’m going to do right now. Okay, I’ve been beating you up for years about doing a commercial for me. Right now, if I were to give you 30 to 75 seconds to say this is my friend Dr. Steve from the Elliott Chiropractic Life Center. What should people know about chiropractic and coming into your office?

Steve Elliott 27:10
What should they know about chiropractic and coming into my office? Most people will equate chiropractic to strictly biomechanical issues like low back pain, neck pain, that sort of thing. I heard right, but it it works on a bigger sort of sphere than that because our nervous system runs our body, and sometimes we don’t equate some of the symptoms we’re experiencing with with being a a nervous system issue. So, I would say things like headache, migraine, some sort of some types of allergies, some types of asthma, some types of breathing issues, some types of digestive issues-they’re not excluded from what chiropractic can do for folks. We know that our brain runs our body and it talks to our body over our spinal cord, which runs inside of our spinal column. That’s made up of 24 movable segments called vertebrae, and if those things do not sit in the right spot, or do not move in the right pattern. We’re going to end up with some pressure somewhere in the nervous system, typically locally, and it can cause why your

Nestor Aparicio 28:09
your nerve hurts in your pinky, but it’s really coming from your spine.

Steve Elliott 28:12
Typically, right? Those sorts of things. People have, you know, I’ve got leg pain. Well, it’s not in your leg, right? It’s in your low back. So our job is to find out what that alignment issue may be for you and undertake to correct it for you, and we find that it works really well with most folks. So,

Nestor Aparicio 28:31
410-882-7670, and I will say the first tip from Dr. Steve to me 27 and a half years ago was don’t sit on your wallet,

Steve Elliott 28:41
sitting on that. Don’t sit on your wallet. There’s your

Nestor Aparicio 28:43
first tip, Elliot Chiropractic Life. I am Nestor. We are here at Pete’s Johns, all on behalf of our friends at the Maryland Lottery. It is the Maryland Crab Cake Tour, which includes pizza, no French fries, and gravy today. It did include a milkshake for me today, but I was promoting. Look, I was promoting Jessica Vallis’s fantastic ice cream endeavor, the Seven Valleys Ice Cream Playground in Pensilucky, right up by Luke Jones. Maybe Luke’s nieces could be part of this when it opens, and we’re trying to make this playground a reality. So to do that, I sacrificed and I had a mint chocolate chip milkshake. Took one for the team. Well, I mean, Peach Johns does have milkshakes here and ice cream, which I don’t promote enough of, as well as a crab cake, which I will be promoting later. John Allen will be here, my rock star buddy. We’re gonna talk about his new single with the Stone Horses. The band’s out playing all summer long, doing cool stuff. I’m sure there’ll be a Child’s Play reference or two. But really, we’re gonna talk about meet me over the mall. Which mall? Gold Ring. Now we meet Gold Ring on me East Point. So John and I remember East Point Mall and all of our buddies from East Point Mall, and this is our last tour at East Point Mall today. It’s almost like when they shut down Ridgemont once Picoli and Damone back in the day. So this is you know we were the mall rats at East Point, and we’re gonna go. Be mall rats one last time when we leave here, and we’re probably going to do some Dundalkies and speak our Dundalk language. Your local tongue,

Steve Elliott 30:08
you know. They don’t

Nestor Aparicio 30:09
talk like that down Essex.

Steve Elliott 30:10
It’s funny when people speak with accents from different parts of Baltimore.

Nestor Aparicio 30:15
They’re different. If
