Hammel to start potential Game 5 and other Game 4 pre-game notes

(Update: Joe Saunders was named the Game 4 starter following the 3-2 loss to the Yankees on Wednesday night.) NEW YORK — As the Orioles prepared to play Game 3 of the American League Division Series against the New York Yankees on Wednesday night, their starting pitcher for Game 4 remained a mystery. Manager Buck Showalter will wait until after Game 3 to decide between left-hander Joe Saunders and right-hander Chris Tillman to make Thursday’s start at Yankee Stadium. Saunders would be working on five days’ rest while Tillman hasn’t pitched since last Wednesday against Tampa Bay in the final game of the regular season. “We were kind of hoping you would tell us,” said Saunders, drawing laughter from the media gathered prior to Game 3. “Because we don’t know yet. Whoever it is, me or Chris, we’re going to go out there and do our job.” To the surprise of nearly everyone outside the organization, Saunders pitched 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball against the Texas Rangers in the AL Wild Card game last Friday to help land the Orioles in the Division Series. Saunders made one start against the Yankees in the regular season, allowing two earned runs

Reynolds’ hand good to go and other notes for ALDS opener

When Mark Reynolds was plunked on the left hand by Rangers starter Yu Darvish in the second inning of Friday night’s game in Arlington, the Orioles feared the worst for their first baseman. The club saw Nick Markakis break his thumb after being hit by a similar pitch nearly a month ago, but the news was better for Reynolds, who stayed in the game to finish an 0-for-3 night at the plate. He is expected to be in the lineup against the New York Yankees in Game 1 of the American League Division Series. “This guy is a very tough, durable man, but that one had a little different look in his face,” manager Buck Showalter said. “I initially thought it might be broken. I haven’t heard anything yet, but I’d be surprised if he’s not a player [Sunday] night.” Showalter officially named right-hander Jason Hammel as his Game 1 starter, but he wouldn’t go as far as naming the rest of his rotation. Wei-Yin Chen and Miguel Gonzalez will likely be the next two in line to pitch in the five-game series, but an uncertain weather forecast could alter plans. Sunday is expected to be a very rainy day,

Why tonight is special to me…

Tonight, we watch the Orioles compete in their first postseason game in 5,469 days. In October 1997, I was a freshman in high school and sported a mouthful of braces. Earlier this week, I celebrated my 29th birthday. Though very happy for the city of Baltimore and for all Orioles fans, I’ll think of four very special people in my life who are here in spirit but not in body tonight. I’ll remember Grandmom’s amusing mix of optimism and fickleness with Grandpop hilariously needling her from across the room the entire time. I’ll envision Pop sitting in his recliner, watching quietly but intently. And I will picture Dad sitting on the couch next to me, hanging with every pitch as he screams and drops popcorn all over the floor. They are the reason why I love baseball and why I’m in this business. And the thought of the four of them watching this one tonight brings a smile to my face. Regardless of what happens over the next few hours in Arlington, enjoy this one for yourself and for those who loved the Orioles and are no longer with us.

Game times announced for potential AL East tiebreaker and Wild Card game

(Updated: 7:15 p.m.) Major League Baseball has announced times for a potential American League East tiebreaker game on Thursday and the AL Wild Card play-in game on Friday. A potential one-game tiebreaker between the Orioles and New York Yankees would take place at 7:10 p.m. on Thursday night. Of course, the Orioles must defeat the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday and the Yankees must lose to Boston for this game to be necessary. The Orioles would hold the tiebreaker over New York for home-field advantage due to their superior record against AL East opponents this season. The AL Wild Card Game will start at 8:37 p.m. on Friday night. Should the Orioles beat the Tampa Bay Rays in the regular-season finale, they are guaranteed to at least host the wild card play-in game. They would then play the Texas Rangers, who fell in Oakland Wednesday. If Baltimore falls to the Rays on Wednesday, they would go on the road to play the Rangers in Arlington. The potential AL East tiebreaker game and the AL Wild Card game are both scheduled to be televised on TBS. Here’s MLB full listing of postseason schedule: AL Wild Card Game Friday, October 5 TBS

Report: Former Ravens defensive coordinator and Colts head coach Pagano has leukemia

Former Ravens defensive coordinator and Indianapolis Colts head coach Chuck Pagano has been hospitalized with leukemia, according to multiple reports Monday morning. The illness is considered “very treatable’ as Pagano will be hospitalized for the next six weeks while undergoing treatment, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen. The Colts had a bye in Week 4, but Indianapolis Star columnist Bob Kravitz reports Pagano had been complaining of unusual fatigue and went for blood workup during the bye week. Indianapolis offensive coordinator Bruce Arians will serve as interim coach while Pagano focuses on treatment and recovery. The Colts have called a 10:30 a.m. press conference to offer more information about Acute promyelocytic leukemia, the form with which Pagano has been diagnosed. In 2011, Pagano guided the league’s third-ranked defense in his only season as the defensive coordinator in Baltimore. Prior to that, the 51-year-old served three years as the Ravens secondary coach under John Harbaugh. Wildly popular with his defensive players, Pagano often drew comparisons to former Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan during his tenure in Baltimore.

NFL won't fine Harbaugh for bumping official Sunday night

Multiple outlets are reporting the NFL will not fine coach John Harbaugh for making contact with an official during the Ravens’ 31-30 win over the New England Patriots on Sunday night. Harbaugh picked up a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for bumping an official while trying to call a timeout in the fourth quarter. The coach had expressed confidence that the league would not fine him prior to the news breaking. “I guess I didn’t understand how he interpreted it,” Harbaugh said following the game. “But, what we’re told is to get the timeout where they can see it in front of their face in those situations. That’s what I’ve been told for five years going into this game. I think he took it as bumping him. I didn’t mean to bump him. I wanted to call a timeout, so I apologize for bumping, but the intent was to call a timeout.” Unlike Harbaugh, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick will be fined for grabbing an official at the conclusion of the game.

Ravens back in black — sort of — against Browns Thursday night

As the Ravens prepare for their third prime-time home game in four weeks, I believe I’ve fielded more questions about which uniform they’ll be wearing each week than who will be lining up at rush linebacker. Wearing purple jerseys with white pants in each of their first three games — they wore their dark jerseys in Philadelphia as the Eagles wore white — the Ravens will finally be back in black when they welcome the Cleveland Browns to M&T Bank Stadium on Thursday night. It’s just not the look most fans were hoping to see. A team official confirmed the Ravens would once again wear their purple tops but will do so with black pants this time. The purple-and-black combination was the team’s home uniform in their 1996 inaugural season and brought back the look in a prime-time game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Dec. 5, 2010. They wore black pants with their purple jerseys in their final two home games last season, the Christmas Eve game against the Cleveland Browns and their divisional-round contest against the Houston Texans. The team has remained rather quiet on the status of their alternate black jerseys and there have been plenty of reports
