SPEAKERS

Nestor Aparicio, John Martin

Nestor Aparicio  00:01

Welcome home. We are W, N, S T, am 1570 Towson, Baltimore. We call this thing Baltimore positive. You’re doing the Maryland crab cake tour out on the road fadeleys This week at Lexington market. And I don’t care when they’re starting that Oreo game, we’re going to start our programming at fadeleys during lunchtime. We will have the Maryland treasures scratch offs to give away the boardwalks been like the popular the horses to the AST courses. I have been trying to pitch the Blackwater motif of mollusks, of birds and crustaceans, but we’ll have these next week as well as we take the Maryland crab cake to our back to Catonsville. First time ever in the former paint store in the wallpaper store that is now the fishmonger’s daughter. It’s a beautiful space. We’re looking forward to getting out there. Thursday, they gave me my own table overlooking Frederick road. All of it brought to you by our friends at the Maryland lottery. In conjunction with GBMC, I’m working wearing my walk a mile in their shoes shirt. We had some great guests on from that as well as orthopedics and hip and knee replacements, a little bit of that, as well as HVAC and plumbing needs. With our friends at Farnham and Dermer, they are the comfort guys. This guy is trying to provide some comfort this week because he’s been giving away a lot of money. I said to him, you know, we’re gonna talk Pac Man scratch offs at my Maryland treasure scratch offs. I’m looking forward to getting the PAC man’s. We have a NASCAR promotionalist John Martin is like, no, no, we’ve got winners, winners and more winners. And I went to empty lottery here, and I see this young lady that had two grand slams in one game and soaked you out of $10,500 so congratulations to Michelle Crisco. So you want to talk winners here today? Do you John Martin?

John Martin  01:40

You know, we talk winners every day, Nestor here at the Maryland lottery, some days we talk more with winners than others, but we always talk winners here at Maryland lottery. Yeah, the Michelle Crisco story is a great one. You may recall that was the Houston Astro series recently, a couple weeks back, and she was so excited being the contest of the game. Lifelong Orioles fan that she said, You know what, I’m going to be actually buy a ticket and go to the game myself, that very game. So she chose that Astros game. Actually, she was selected by us to be the contestant of the game. She came down to the ballpark and was all excited about it. And if you remember the story, Adley rushman hits a Grand Slam, and she’s thinking, This is great. That’s five grand. And two innings later, Jeremiah Jackson has another grand slam, and she is just over the moon, uh, thrilled with excitement. And you know these great stories about fans? You go to MD lottery.com, for all the details on these stories. The great thing about these stories is you find out the people are really tied to Orioles history. These are not just casual people, just taking a flyer here. This is a passion of hers. I find out in looking at her story that her great uncle was a ticket taker and work security at Memorial Stadium. So she has been living Orioles for years. I didn’t

Nestor Aparicio  02:59

8

have Jones to lunch last week over Costas, and he met Dick Girardi. So my old friends, and they asked Luke about his passion for the my dad was in Usher Memorial Stadium 1983 you know, like, so, like, they’re really this, this town’s got a lot of, you know, we got a lot of bones with the Orioles, and it doesn’t shock me, but the fact that somebody went to the game when they’re the winner. I don’t know that I’ve ever spoken to you about that. Like to think, because I think I watch the games on TV, and they announce your name on TV and all that. But I’m thinking, if I were the contest in the game, why wouldn’t I go to the ballpark? That’d be make it more fun, right?

John Martin  03:35

Exactly, exactly. And speaking of fun, you can go to MD letter.com, and check out all the upcoming contestants of the game. One of my favorite games to play here, Nestor on our show, even if you don’t enjoy it, I do, is the where in the world is scenario, and we have a winner coming up this weekend against the the Nationals on the 17th. Joseph McLaughlin, from I’m sorry, wrong person. Jerome Williams on the 16th. Jerome Williams is from East New Market Maryland. We’re in the world. Nestor is East New Market Maryland, and don’t confuse it with new market Maryland.

Nestor Aparicio  04:13

Is it east of New Market Maryland?

John Martin  04:15

Okay, that was the easy part.

8

Nestor Aparicio  04:17

Okay, all right. I got half of like East St Louis has got to be east of St Louis. I feel like I’ve heard a new market Maryland. You know, there, as an aside, there was a new market in the AHL in Canada. So I know it’s not that one. They were the new market saints.

John Martin  04:36

I’ll give you a hint.

Nestor Aparicio  04:37

You

John Martin  04:37

8

cannot comfortably walk from new market Maryland to east. New Market Maryland, that would be not possible.

Nestor Aparicio  04:45

Are these islands what? We got a lot of water here. Okay, I’m gonna have to, okay, you’re forcing me to actively cheat. So I’m not even gonna look up new market. I’m gonna look up East New Market Maryland. In East New Market, Maryland, looks to be a lovely place. I’ve been here. I’ve been here. It’s been everywhere. Secretary, I’ve been everywhere. It is right by her lock. It is right by one of the great crab cakes in Maryland at suicide bridge. It is right near. So it’s just north of it’s not north of Cambridge. As you go below Cambridge, and then you go north, you know where it is. It’s north. Look at the

John Martin  05:30

map. I know where it is.

Nestor Aparicio  05:31

It’s north of the black water refuge that is depicted here in this Maryland treasure, which is one of the great places in the state. So Eastern Shore. It said on the eastern shore.

8

John Martin  05:42

And, you know, I I don’t have current figures available. I only go by what Wikipedia tells me. But as of 2010 not the 2020 census, but the 2010 census, 400 people, 400 in East Newmarket, Maryland, my guess is they may have lost a few in the last 10 years. You

Nestor Aparicio  06:02

know what the craziest thing is is, I absolutely 1,000,000% have been through this town because it’s the town you have to go. It’s a lovely little town. I mean, there’s like a little fire firehouse there. I mean, I I’m looking at it. It’s Mount Holly road. It’s right near Secretary. Secretary is a beautiful little town too. And then suicide bridge restaurant is right. Everyone should do that, and you should ride the little ferry boat out onto the

John Martin  06:32

top tank River. You’ve baited me twice here, and I’m ignoring it both times. I’m sure there’s a story about why it’s called Suicide bridge, and I don’t have time for it now. But Jerome Williams of East New Market, Maryland, we wish him lots of luck against the Nationals on the 16th. And you can go to MD lottery.com

Nestor Aparicio  06:48

8

he’s already won money, though, right? This guy, they

John Martin  06:51

went $500 for being selected, and then it’s $500 for every

Nestor Aparicio  06:55

order. Take the first 5060, bucks. Walk up the road to suicide bridge restaurant. Get yourself crab cake. They’re out on the deck. All right, you

John Martin  07:01

know what else is fun, giving away money on the big wheel. I know you’re a big fan of

8

Nestor Aparicio  07:06

we had eight spins. Last I checked, we only had two people come in, and we had more people.

John Martin  07:11

They are just, I think we spoke it into existence.

Nestor Aparicio  07:14

Okay?

John Martin  07:15

8

And so what happened is we had a gentleman and his son who visited us from Washington County, and you may recall Nestor, over the last several weeks, we’ve been talking about the positive vibes that are emanating from Hagerstown, Maryland, and this gentleman bought his big spin ticket At the A, C and T convenience store in Hagerstown, Maryland. He wins the spin on the ticket. He comes in here, he spins the wheel and wins $140,000 and wish he and his family well with that. I believe, if I have my facts right, and if not, someone will correct me, that may be the largest big spin jackpot prize to date. You can get up to a $250,000 win on the big spin we’ve had even since I’ve breaking news, breaking news. Yes, we have yet another winner who has come forward, and we have scheduled, not scheduled, their big spin yet. So that would be our fourth big spin winner. There are four more out there, total of eight. So buy your big spin scratch off ticket at any of the nearly 4300 retailers around the state of Maryland.

Nestor Aparicio  08:28

So I’m watching this guy and his kid come in from from Western Maryland in Hagerstown, and former dairy farmer, it says here, and this is the part that I like, where you being the Executive Director of the Maryland Robert John Martin, that you allow people to remain anonymous, yet still fun, because they put up. You know, dad and his son are holding the check for $140,000 and they want to remain anonymous. It says Washington County winner on it, but I do like that they’re participatory. You can see that people

John Martin  09:00

really win. You know what? It’s a lot of fun. You see, you see people come in here, and again, they know they’ve already won something that’s, well, there’s 50 grand, right? They drove

Nestor Aparicio  09:09

in knowing they had 50,

8

John Martin  09:10

right? They had 50. And we were not going to take that away from them. And then they spin the wheel, as you can see there on the wheel and the picture, if you go to MD lottery.com, you’ll see a variety of winning amounts on the wheel, just like you’ve seen popular TV game shows. And so you spin that wheel, and it goes round and round and round and and then stops right there at $140,000 so congratulations. We wish them lots of excitement. And how many more

Nestor Aparicio  09:38

winners? We’re still looking for a couple handful.

John Martin  09:40

We have one more in the queue, as we say here at lottery headquarters, that will be the fourth. We haven’t scheduled that yet for the big spin, and there are potentially four other winners out there. So you can buy the big spin ticket at any of our Maryland lottery retailers. So

Nestor Aparicio  09:54

8

go play the games. John Martin is here. He is playing the games. Home run. Riches is alive and well a. Um, you know, I saw Powerball got hit recently. Mega Millions is a over a quarter of a billion dollars here. We also have the racetracks promotion for this week. But I want to talk about your racing. You had this NASCAR Powerball Chase that’s going on right now. Let’s talk a little NASCAR and a little racing here, because I know this is, this is a big one, and it involves a big trip down to Miami too.

John Martin  10:23

It is. And if you go to MD lottery.com We’ve done this Powerball promotion now with NASCAR for the last several years, and it has changed this year. And it’s changed because NASCAR has changed the way that they award their top Driver of the Year. It’s called the chase, and we are going to be chasing the Powerball winners. If you buy a Powerball ticket between now and June 15, so there’s still plenty of time, you can enter it into your My lottery rewards account and and we will then select over five drawings, eight winners. Each drawing. First drawing will be May 18, so it’s coming up in a few days, and then every week for the next five weeks, we’ll pick eight winners. They will win $2,500 for being selected. And then those 40 people will be in a virtual drum here at lottery headquarters, and we will select one of them to be the state of Maryland representative for the National the chase drawing that will occur over a series of weeks leading up to the VIP trip experience, to homestead, to be there, live and in person, when we will pick one of four lucky finalists. One of them will win $1 million at the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series championship in Homestead, Florida, and

Nestor Aparicio  11:44

that is going on through June 15. You can get all of the details up at MD lottery.com, John, I haven’t asked you much. Second Chance and the app, I don’t get into this too much with you, because I feel like it’s sort of ubiquitous, but it’s not I mean, when I give away scratch offs, people don’t know how to play the game, or they wonder what the rules are. And the prize check, which is sort of a modern ish thing, but when I whip out my fancy app and I show them the little QR code thing, you go pub, and sometimes the schmutz is still in the way. You have to get the schmutz out of the way. But second chance and registering, I if you’re playing the games, you’re really doing yourself at this service, if you’re not using the app and you’re not getting involved in second chances, because this is where all of this fun we talk about happens with home run riches in these things, well, there’s

John Martin  12:36

even more fun that we haven’t talked about. For instance, just being a Maryland lottery rewards Club member, and entering those tickets in you accumulate points, and those points can be used for a variety of drawings. Of course, we talk about these elaborate drawings for for the big prizes, but we have a thing going on now where you enter 50 of your draw points, and you could possibly win a St Petersburg luxury resort vacation. We will award that on July 7. So enter now, and it’s a pretty fun trip there. Total value of the luxury resort vacation is over $17,000 you want to guess what if a four night stay at the vinoy resort and golf club,

8

Nestor Aparicio  13:14

oh yes, fancy smancy. I know that place now.

John Martin  13:19

It is, it is. It is. It includes a spa trip, a round of golf, some spending money, and beautiful relaxation. So one lucky winner of that event was just for being a my lottery rewards club member. So lots of fun stuff.

Nestor Aparicio  13:33

All right. Well, John Martin’s here. He’s the Executive Director of all things Maryland lottery and gaming. They put us on the road with the Maryland crab cake tour. Next week, we will be at the fishmonger’s daughter on Thursday, christening and opening a new location of the faid leaf family. Damien Hans been talking about it for years, getting it open. We had a meal out there last week, and next Thursday, we’ll have a lot of Catonsville guests, as well as some Maryland treasures. Scratch off skidway. Did I cover everything? I mean, you got so many winners in these winter stories, we could sit here all day and just talk about people winning 200,000 people winning $200,000 right?

John Martin  14:04

8

Yeah, or more. You can go to MD lottery.com and look at the young man. Maurice Williams, won $5 million on our latest $50 scratch off tick called $5 million Lux scratch off a Washington DC man who was lucky enough to win shortly after his 59th birthday by handling and winning number 59 How’s that for a little voodoo with magic?

Nestor Aparicio  14:32

Good thing for me, I’ll be 58 this year. Maybe 59 is gonna be

John Martin  14:35

my lucky man. That’s, that’s, it’s all been around

Nestor Aparicio  14:37

36 was my lucky number. But that was so 23 years ago.

8

John Martin  14:40

Now it is And speaking of lucky numbers, we were announced very proudly This week our results for the state of Maryland sports wagering contributions in the month of April, we had actually our best month the fiscal year, over $9 million of contributions to the. A blueprint for Maryland’s future fun, which

Nestor Aparicio  15:02

April’s bigger than, like January, even right with playoff games and whatnot.

John Martin  15:07

This year it seemed to be that way.

Nestor Aparicio  15:10

8

Well, so April has, from a betting perspective, now that it is all modern on the up and up. I mean, baseball comes online every night, but really, football, excuse me, a best basketball and hockey go into playoff action as well as national championship is probably

John Martin  15:27

in April too, right? Yeah, the NCAA National Championship the beginning of the month. He had full month of baseball. He had hockey playoffs, basketball playoffs, and the professional leagues and lots

Nestor Aparicio  15:37

of games too. When I think about how many playoff games there are. There are less games this month just because more teams have been eliminated.

John Martin  15:44

Yeah, and the reason, and again, we’ve talked about this before. From time to time, the parlay betting, I’m not necessarily a strong proponent of that. I think people need to really be educated as to what they’re they’re wagering on. But sometimes they they take information and do with it what they see fit. So a lot of parlay wagers. And, of course, baseball and and basketball and hockey and and all the sports, professional sports are going on in the month of April. I’ll give you many opportunities to to build parlays. And that’s where I think a lot of that, that revenue comes from trying

8

Nestor Aparicio  16:18

to figure out why April is such a big month. And I’m thinking, well, there’s a lot going on. It’s not like June or July, when there’s really not a lot of sports happening, right? No,

John Martin  16:26

I would say from this point on, although, you know, we may still get a good may, because, again, of the playoffs, but as you correctly pointed out, you have less games. So yeah, my sense is this may be the high water mark, then for the year with May and June. Then, of course, we turn the page on a new fiscal year starting July 1 and and everyone excited about the prospects for the NFL season, so we’ll have plenty to talk about in the summer leading up to to the fall.

Nestor Aparicio  16:52

Well, I can’t beat you up too much on his home run riches. I mean, they’ve hit a couple of grand slams at a cost, right? So at least we’re sort of ahead on Grand Slams, but behind on victories at this point, hopefully things perk up against the Washington Nationals this week and all the rays next week might be better than the Yankees. John Martin is the executive director of all things Maryland, lottery and gaming. I always remind folks, you got to be 18 to play these games, and if you have anybody in your life that’s struggling with gambling, there are resources out there. They’re at MD lottery, one 800 gambler, all of these things that are there. We don’t talk about it much, but this is time of year where you see somebody being a little too involved in the sports thing, especially this week with the horse racing this week too. I’ve had, we’ve had a lot of gambling talk. John, remember so far back that this was the one week we always talked about gambling because of horse racing. Now it has become a ubiquitous thing, so I always try to tell folks do this responsibly and have a good time with it, right?

John Martin  17:48

8

Yeah, absolutely. You know there are resources available. And I think sometimes what gets lost in the shadows too is that family members can can reach out, because oftentimes the person who’s involved with it doesn’t will deny there’s a lot of denial going on. They don’t see that, but it really affects spouses, parents, children. Again, a variety of people can be affected, and those resources are available for family members as well. Like you said, One 800 gambler is a toll free number free services for Maryland residents, and they will put you in touch with the people that can help.

Nestor Aparicio  18:19

John Martin will return again next week and return to give away more money, hopefully from Oriole home runs here, from home run riches. All the information is up at MD lottery.com including the NASCAR information, as well as the new Pac Man promotion, which, when I get done with the Maryland treasures Pac Man tickets coming for me next month. We are W, N, S, T AM, 1570 Towson, Baltimore, and we never stop talking. It’s Miss Pac Man two, Baltimore positive. Stay with us.
