Nestor J. Aparicio  00:00

Tom Pierce is here he is a swing and extra classic five golf. Got locations all over the city and get a classic five golf learn more microscope Liano better known as received the Artiste is here, we’re Coco’s we’re doing the Marilyn crabcake tour. It’s all brought to my friends at the Maryland lottery Gold Rush double sevens. I gotta get used to saying that I have a whole stack to giveaway. We’re gonna be doing that here. Coco’s today. We’re going to be Cooper’s and Fells Point on Friday for Fleet Week. And then next week, we’re Costas on Thursday before the Orioles beat the Yankees after they beat the Phillies, and then we will be in Papist on the 25th and Parkville. I invited you up for that I thought I don’t Mount Pleasant. You come up there and you’re like, No, I want to come and talk Phillies Orioles. So you were you here you were here at the 83 World Series. We

8

Mike Ricigliano  00:45

arrived here in 83. I was telling Tom that we moved here in August of 80. The next month, the Orioles won the World Series. Well, I moved here a little earlier because I was worried

Nestor J. Aparicio  00:56

and you thought this is great. This is going to happen more often. I

Mike Ricigliano  00:58

thought the greatest baseball town I have ever seen buffalo didn’t have a major league. It was so great for your art to write. It was fantastic.

Nestor J. Aparicio  01:06

8

And Cal Ripken Eddie Murray and then Earl Weaver and Altobelli and

Mike Ricigliano  01:10

all those guys like just being able to kind of do that for at the time sports first, also a defunct paper that I work for. Ya know, it was

Nestor J. Aparicio  01:20

a guy at that table two and a half hours ago, pulled me over after the first segment and said my dad covered the Orioles for the news post you remember the news posts have Kurt and I’m like I worked at the news. Yeah, so his dad was an Oriole writer who passed in 1967 when he was a 13 year old boy. He knew Stedman like all that. So it’s amazing. Small to him. And you’re talking about the valley with me and I would have never known that we were gonna sit here and talk about it is amazing. That’s why I don’t script these things because I never know, three

Mike Ricigliano  01:51

is a long time ago. A lot of not one in all that time. You know, the first year if I were to move here in 84, I never would have tried to get to

8

Nestor J. Aparicio  02:01

how many playoff games the Orioles have won since 1983. And I think yeah, they want a series of 96 and 9097 and did and then as well they won a playoff game in the Delmon young thing in 14.

Mike Ricigliano  02:14

Like damn, there’s a couple there’s a couple I don’t

Nestor J. Aparicio  02:17

know the numbers but I’m not less than 10 because they had won four and four but not a lot. They have not won a lot of playoff games even and Phillies have become more last 15 years. 15

Tom Pierce  02:30

8

years I mean when I really wrestled late 70s We made it but we always lost to the reds or the Dodgers to pirates are good but then it’s like the carpenter family I think sold the team and similar to what the Orioles have gone through. You have an owner that isn’t proactive. I’ll be very PC in how they want to run the team calm I

Nestor J. Aparicio  02:50

always call him unorthodox right sorry past tense let’s make sure we use that

Tom Pierce  02:55

I mean now and so then it’s the Phillies had many down years just like girls did right? I mean the change of ownership the new ownership group I mean there we love them fold out what the stadium

Nestor J. Aparicio  03:05

the fanatic the ring the bell I have friends that were this baby blue. My friend Micah book doll is with his kid he’s in where they plan to Fenway now is that where they are? Yeah, look into pictures, right? So I mean, I have Phillies fans everywhere. I threatened to go to Philly to Camden Thursday to see Chris Stapleton. I made good with Dick Gerardi. I sent a picture already. Yeah. I sent Gerardi rods horse odds is Belmont week last week, but I sent him horse odds on me and him getting a cheesesteak together which we talked about for years in Philly. at Joe’s Joe’s steaks, that’s where he wants to take you have never been there. So I gave him odds for the whole week. I was like 12 The one that make it the Chris Stapleton. I was 41 for Tommy Conwell and 72 for the Rolling Stones. I made it to Tommy calm because the weather was great was free

8

Tom Pierce  03:52

was in Wayne, Pennsylvania. Now I know I saw time to count on when I was young and the young Rumblers he’s still young. It’s

Nestor J. Aparicio  03:57

still great. So I went to Philly on Saturday night. And just being out in the square. It was amazing to see how many people had Philly stuff on and more than equal stuff this time and you’re more than six or certainly more flyers, but there was Philly stuff on all kinds of people. And I don’t know if I went to a festival in Baltimore this week that ever you weren’t an Oreo hat. Oh, how many people in here got an Oriole hat on today or how many people I see what were swag right but when you’re good 15 years. You just have enough silly stuff in the closet that you’re wearing out. And I’m telling you I saw 100 Different Phillies items and all bubble pee all the Schmidt the stuff that I love, you know I have a sixth time you know I love the Phillies. I’ve told you this. I was a huge Phillies fan in that era when you met me. I

Mike Ricigliano  04:47

also love the Phillies I was telling Tom that after after the Orioles and you know I love the Giants because I love Willie Mays but but those those and I love the Mets growing up so that was it but not not so much. Now it’s all Orioles. But I still I still love the Phillies. They’re really fun. And the Phillies I gotta say this time even when they played them in 83 And now the same thing they’re just they just have this kind of rough neck I don’t know this they just have kind of battles that I’ve always enjoyed

Nestor J. Aparicio  05:18

8

Orleans in alright don’t know sky. I mean Curley’s wife was my best friend growing up. You didn’t know I didn’t know that. Oh, like I teach at her wedding. I don’t take pride in that because you know Kurt’s Kurt, but I love you Shonda. Up in Philadelphia the other night, I took this picture. I guess I took it for you. All right. So I want you to read what it says you can see as a Philly sign I’m gonna share with everybody read it out. Because this is the guide for this is Tony calm on the other side isn’t in front of the stage. Right? So this guy took this picture of his back figure, he wouldn’t mind his back. And I thought, this is just such a great quote,

Tom Pierce  05:49

the sound of a wood bat hitting a baseball. It’s the heartbeat of America.

Nestor J. Aparicio  05:53

That’s it. He’s wearing a film. He said, right there. And I took that picture. And I thought we played him next week. And that’s for the rivalry and it’s a little bit more here, but I got nothing to say. I mean, if it was a really good, and he was really good and losses in us in October.

Mike Ricigliano  06:14

Oh, I think it’s entirely possible. Well,

8

Tom Pierce  06:16

it’s interesting that you said that you didn’t see many people with oil stuff on when you’re around. I was at the beach. We have friends that live in Delaware’s who went to some of the Delaware beaches this weekend. It was Phillies and Ortles show. I mean, that’s all the pirates stuff’s gone. Oh, no, there was that’s all I saw. I mean, people if they were wearing a baseball team or wearing a sports team, it was Orioles or Phillies and groups. I mean, there were so many Orioles everywhere. My wife had her rules. I didn’t I forgot my Phillies hat. So I’d

Nestor J. Aparicio  06:42

wear Oriole stuff now but I’m saying the Orioles are new it’s a week and a half old here right you know literally when the Phillies beat I saw a guy with who the second the second baseman Chase Utley. Yeah. Oh, right. There was a dog at the party that had a 26 There’s There’s number right Jason Lee had a dad, Chase Utley jersey on a dog at this party. And they got to just that’s what rutschman and Henderson will be 15 years from now. People will have 35 Richmonds on their dog

Mike Ricigliano  07:15

they now what are you talking about? They probably have I understand,

Nestor J. Aparicio  07:19

8

but it’s not. Dude, there were still 30,000 empty seats last night. Right with the brasier. So it’s still coming. I don’t know if the reason it’s sold out this weekend is because the Phillies fans are common. Yeah, that’s just the truth. I mean, they’re gonna be 30,000 Philly fans. I

Tom Pierce  07:33

saw I think the Phillies are two or three in the league in their in home games in there. How many seats are sold, attended? Their attendance is like 97

Nestor J. Aparicio  07:43

Look, this would go back to 83 received when I was a kid 70 You know, late 70s, early 80s. There are only a couple places that drew the Yankees drew the Dodgers drew the Phillies Drew, there were only a couple of the Phillies were a big draw, which is how they got Pete Rose. What’s how they got Joe Morgan. I mean, they got players because they had money to win and they had money because they sold tickets. It was always a great baseball town. It really going back to tug McGraw and like all of them, Richie Ashburn and all that, but this last 15 years with Philadelphia is represented is what we would like to have 15 years from now, which is you had a couple of down years, but most years out of these 15 years 12 Out of the 15 years, you went down to Clearwater thinking we can be a playoff team,

Tom Pierce  08:27

right? Well, I think they always have to keep rushman and Henderson, you have to pay them Don’t worry about it. Just pay him. You got to keep that core. You keep that core with how young the team is. I mean, the orals can be phenomenal for 10 year

8

Nestor J. Aparicio  08:41

you feel that on your golf courses here though right now you feel the Orioles. Right, God Yeah. But you didn’t for a long time. You’ve been doing this a while, right? I mean, no, not winning, winning. You know where I feel it and received my wife’s on crutches. Right. We’ve been going out to dinner a little bit more because I don’t want to cook and up on her feet. She’s working all day now. Bringing her beautiful crab cake here from Coco’s later on cooking a trip they’ll travel well, but I don’t mean ain’t taking him.

Mike Ricigliano  09:08

She didn’t hear that when we go out. We were

Nestor J. Aparicio  09:11

at State Fair watching a game last week. We were at CVP the other night we were not your mama’s last week, this apple tv things ish. I mean, yeah, on Friday nights where the game’s not on. We almost came over to watch the game here Sunday, but they’re closed the Coco’s on Sunday. So we went to Costas and said that crabs, but we were at Costas on Sunday, and he wasn’t crowded at 130 in the afternoon. That’s not when people go and eat a bunch of crabs, usually on Sunday. But everybody in the bar, every TV was on the Orioles. Everybody was on every pitch. Everybody’s got the beer and they’re looking at they’re watching the game. And everybody’s moving when Couser is the triple. And my wife has been married to me for 21 years, right? And she turned to me in the middle of the game when the move started and she’s like, this is the first time in our marriage Ah we’ve been in a bar watching just an Oreo game where everybody in the bush because I’ve always told her it could be that way because she saw me to free the birds she saw this family turn on me she saw Mike Flanagan commit suicide she’s been with me for all of that and she’s been waiting for this baseball thing I wrote that book in oh six about how baseball could save the city and I still kind of you should believe that now soon we’re seeing but we’ve waited all this time and the 83 thing when the Phillies come in here it really does mark us to say that a long time man no one has been it plenty people in the stadium have no recollection of that over the weekend no and only knows Chase Utley all they know is what you are right now.

Mike Ricigliano  10:41

8

You know and so you know some people get down on there being a whole new wave of Oriole fans or like you know, just in because they’re winning, but

Nestor J. Aparicio  10:51

you got to celebrate plenty reminisce bandwagon.

Mike Ricigliano  10:54

You’ve got to celebrate that. You know, it’s great. More than merrier on this on this ride. You

Nestor J. Aparicio  11:00

know we’re seeing is we’re in two things. One for me one for him. Yeah, of course. Of course. Yeah. Sorry about me. Classic five. Tom, I will get you out of your for us opens this weekend. If you fall in love with golf. I got a spot for you. Right, exactly.

8

Tom Pierce  11:11

Oh, definitely. I just have to look online, go to our website, classic five golf.com Always look to book the tee time we allow people without a player card 14 days in advance. I have to say we are in the summer. So Friday night, if you want to play Saturday morning, player.

Nestor J. Aparicio  11:26

What’s that? That’s a card that we put you know what a player card was? No, I didn’t need to feel dumb. I was it was

Tom Pierce  11:34

a baseball card. That’s why I set that up. For $35. In the last a whole calendar year, you get discounted rates. All right. So you pay are different than the five bucks is less than around anywhere. Oh, it is. So if you play more than four times a year pays for itself. Nice. All right. And you also can book for car correct. But you name it that the frequent golfer cards, since I joined the corporation without a player’s card. But did they get 60 days in advance term?

Nestor J. Aparicio  12:01

8

You have to be in the club? No, you’d have to be in the club. I don’t know it’s a play club. It’s a player. I figured you had to spend a lot of money to get no not at all now but it’s man I was gonna say Mr. Angelo zoning the team, you want to figure this out the baseball because they’re gonna have a club too, for television for what they’re doing every macro level, every golf course he’s trying to figure out how do we make it more special for everybody, right? You’re trying

Tom Pierce  12:27

to maximize and you want to people’s experience. That’s when we always looked at fun, have a great time. And if you go to any of the courses with the car, okay, and it works out well. But just a matter of just booking. Reality is when you need to when you want to play more time in advance is better because we are in the summer. demand is high, especially on weekends, because that’s when people in play when you were just saying about Angeles and I was very happy to see what the girls have done with T Rowe. You know that, to me means I’ve seen that as an ownership group, because I’ve seen it with a lot of it all the Philly teams that you’re partnering, you’re bringing in a big sponsor, that to me means that you’re hopefully going to

Nestor J. Aparicio  13:01

that 15 million a year release goes directly to Adley rutschman.

Mike Ricigliano  13:04

And that’s what I that’s what I thought I switched back on and on Facebook. And then I saw that people getting in there and saying if it means

8

Tom Pierce  13:10

I’m hoping if Yeah, like that’s that’s the mentality and if that’s the mentality the ownership group has that’s great for Baltimore and the Orioles because they’re gonna be good. I mean, some of those players and some of the young guys that are immune if you go, it’s wild, I have my my brother in laws and sales. So he’s in the Carolinas a lot and he loves baseball Minor League. He said he always wanted to be an umpire. And he’s gotten to some Norfolk games. He’s like, there’s some young guy he’s mentioned names I have no clue who these

Nestor J. Aparicio  13:36

guys are gonna be the trades when we go to get Kyle Gibson back or

Tom Pierce  13:39

whatever something or that they’re gonna be up in three years and just be Wow, they’re pushing people to play.

Nestor J. Aparicio  13:45

8

Throw them into the deal with walkies great player, great player. Great since they got a good system out at the classic five as well. We’re ciggies here. We’re gonna do one more segment was received. Marcel is going to be here with six nieces here. I have not seen Michelle Spraga since 1991. Wow. All right. So and she’s five feet away. I’m Facebook friends with her. And we’re going to talk about Africa animals. And we’re going to talk about Coco’s about that. I

Mike Ricigliano  14:12

want to say this about Tom he’s you’re such a good ambassador for golf man like I I don’t like Oh, but when you were talking about it, so you know, good for you.

Tom Pierce  14:22

Well, thank you. Thank you and good luck for I’ll do it this way. Good luck for our teams. Yeah,

Nestor J. Aparicio  14:26

like I was gonna do like the thing and say, a tough guy. You want to bet me a cheesesteak? Thank you some crabs a bet you go goes Greg kick against Philly Joe’s cheesesteak but I can’t get worked up one way or another it’s fun it’s bad and that’s baseball is when a couple you lose a couple the Cardinals sweet bus we come back we take we get the brooms out on the razor. I like

8

Mike Ricigliano  14:49

I liked the Phillies too much to do that. Now if the Yankees are Oh yeah, of course. It’s

Nestor J. Aparicio  14:54

hard to hate the Phillies. You know why the fanatic fanatic over Westminster rabid fans back in London you know all your people were taking the cheese steaks over there with the fish and chips last weekend so maybe we get the Orioles brand big enough they’ll take us to London you know we took our football team twice that taking these animals from Philly down to Brazil to play play football.

Tom Pierce  15:16

I mean you can’t wear green though. Did you hear that?

Nestor J. Aparicio  15:20

8

You can’t leave. I want to talk about animals. Show’s over. I’ll have Marcela back we’ll talk crabcakes I wanted to learn about lemurs in monkeys. Next, sorry. Add a monkey in the studio once it was Capeci, and it tried to eat me. So I had a sponsor. So since then, Michelle is good seeing you every 32 years you do beautiful work online. Save the animals I watch every one of them. I meant that I did. All right.

Mike Ricigliano  15:52

I’d say probably lose probably take a cold fish. She’s lives in Florida and my wife always gets cold.

Nestor J. Aparicio  16:00

I mentioned that I was cold here because it’s hot out it’s cold near you. Did you are selling it to the air conditioner works. There’s no database. No Yeah, yeah. So so hold on.

Tom Pierce  16:10

You haven’t heard about the grind.

8

Nestor J. Aparicio  16:11

Heard about it? Because I’m Facebook friends with Joe Julio who I gave his first job to him when he was here. I put I put your Julio on the air for his first shift. And he’s the star of Philadelphia. I’m so I didn’t know that’s such a good guy. Joe, Julio is a beautiful guy. So I hear him when I’m in Philly because I listen to MMR. I want to use when I’m up there. I’m gonna use it when I’m up there.

Tom Pierce  16:31

My wife was never on Mars. We went to the beach this weekend. I mean, I

Nestor J. Aparicio  16:35

can’t do a really good Philly because I do Baltimore so well, and they’re like different years. I can’t do escan or Tommy Conwell. I, because there’s such great Philip, you don’t have a great Philadelphia accent. It’s now

Tom Pierce  16:46

8

all the times I’ve been working in public relations that midlantic I’ve tried to lose my union. I

Nestor J. Aparicio  16:53

never would peg you Fil A you don’t you don’t wear it in that way. So this game is I’m trying to be professional. I’ve been to Brazil. Okay. I went for the stones. I went to see you too. I’ve been to Sao Paulo. I’ve been to Rio de Janeiro. I’ve been the point Osiris. You’ve been through South America when Faris Brazil. Okay, so we get to Brazil. And they’re playing a game of Americana, which is the gigantic 300,000 seat stadium. And you can see from the foot of town and everyone I talked to there, said don’t take your wife. Like you can’t take your wife to a soccer game that won’t don’t do that. Just don’t do that. So we didn’t go because it didn’t. We were pretty much hold one safe, you know what I mean? Like favelas. And I mean, Brazil was Tajo 20 years ago. The only reason I went because Julio went with me. And I felt like well, if I go with because my wife and I were like, we’ll go to Buenos Aires we’re going to Brazil alone during Carnival now. I don’t think so. You know, we’re least gonna get mugged at the worst, you know? So, but we went and it was it was cool. We had a transcendent experience there. But the the notion that you’re gonna go down there and act like a jackass and be an Eagles fan, the one thing that everybody told me there were black, blend in. Don’t speak out loud. Don’t talk loud. Don’t mark yourself as an American no matter what. So this was 1718 years ago, just from a safety that makes you a target.

Mike Ricigliano  18:20

Right? Same thing that they said to us when we went to the Raiders championship game.

Nestor J. Aparicio  18:24

Yeah, ravens

8

Mike Ricigliano  18:25

black

Nestor J. Aparicio  18:26

told me the story because I don’t know the whole

Tom Pierce  18:29

I’ve heard it on radio a couple of times. I’ve heard different stories and stuff like that. No, I don’t think from what the last I heard was the stadium they’re playing in. Their archrival wears green and you’re not allowed to wear green in the stadium. Like fans Nobody’s allowed to wear

Nestor J. Aparicio  18:43

8

it sounds like a Philly wives tale i is asking making this oh, what I hear from

Tom Pierce  18:48

any of the film, I heard it from national. And so the NFL. And the question was, why would the NFL take two teams that were green? To a place because a lot of ways to wear green is the only green they care about is of course it’s the

Mike Ricigliano  18:59

break point. Yep. Yeah.

Tom Pierce  19:00

Well, I’m sure they’ll figure I mean, they can always put the US can wear their black uniforms and green bacon or whites. The helmets would be a challenge. But if that’s the case, or the players, but for fans going down, you know,

8

Nestor J. Aparicio  19:13

that’s the game played in Philly. Let’s go. Let’s I mean, when

Tom Pierce  19:16

there’s a home game, I was not happy that we were playing in Brazil or overseas to start to see

Nestor J. Aparicio  19:22

the you know, none of them are happy when they play overseas to the check clears.

Tom Pierce  19:25

8

Yeah, that’s true. True.

Nestor J. Aparicio  19:27

I went to London. It was astonishing to see how fans it’s not BS. I mean, there are people I saw every Jersey every team, my wife is now going to another she went over to Germany. She went to the Colts Patriot game in Frankfort and sold out. I mean, she got tickets online for 100 bucks, but it’s not as hot as the NFL would have you believe that like everybody there’s a football fan but much more so than baseball. Play the Phillies are playing over there last week against the Mets and the Yankees and Red Sox and a guy that he never gonna catch on over there. That’s a gimmick. That’s not that they’re not selling anything. But I do think the NFL in Brazil is not a gimmick. I think that that that that could catch on there and the way that I mean American and European music in Brazil it’s when bands go down there. Do you ever want to see your rush fan at all? Yeah. Oh god yeah, the rush documentary on their trip to Rio Russian Rio. It’s It’s amazing. They sing the song y y z. Here’s the thing. It has no words. Yeah. There were 200,000 people singing the words to a song that has no words and rush. You can see on stage they had never they played every they’ve never seen anything like it and having experienced you to there and the stones. It was transcended when Keith Richards came out and Buenos Aires to the to the to the second stage that they always had in the stadiums. And he plays happy. It was a driving rain on him. And there were 200,000 people singing Resharper Resharper Resharper Resharper. And he was like, this is beautiful music to my ears. Yeah, it’s good to be it’s good to be anywhere. And like when you see the Rolling Stones or soccer play, and you realize basket, the NBA and what it’s become. The NFL has got a shot in Brazil. I don’t think it’s a wasted Packer. packers. Okay. It’s the other green team, the

Tom Pierce  21:29

other the other grantee. I mean it’d be some if they played the Jets, they could

Mike Ricigliano  21:33

be another good green team,

8

Nestor J. Aparicio  21:35

but not a good I’m going to end this segment without your knees so I want to tell right toe to zoom in and tell me about monkeys one day. So I think more solidified Marcel into a crab cake with her before I leave. You know, from a sports perspective, and I asked this question flippantly with Dave shine and when he was here like a year ago, right, what’s the next parade for Baltimore? Philadelphia. Your football teams good. Your baseball teams good. Your basketball team pretty good hockey team not not there right now. The Orioles are really good. The ravens are really good. Because the real fight amongst fans is you suck your tasty kids show them and you switch bread you know whatever your crab cakes, whatever your thing is. It’s really about championships for fan bases. Right? And from the Philadelphia perspective, you never thought the Eagles would win you get one right Phillies were after at sort of wayward like we’re way we’re, and they’ve won. And I remember that vividly seeing all my Philadelphia fans having a good time with all that and the Red Sox and won a bunch time to cubs and won me all these teams win. I wonder what the next parade for either one of these towns are? Because these are they grease poles in your city when they run out when there’s a threat of winning a championship? Well,

Tom Pierce  22:45

that’s always the thing. It’s like when I see that on TV, and I always think is that like when people put no dumping? That’s the first thing you see a whole bunch of trash under that pole. Put out, don’t crease the polls, people are going, I can do that right now. You just tell him that I go do it. I’ve

Mike Ricigliano  22:59

seen the after effects of those Mummer parades. Oh, those are just a way Chelsea’s

Nestor J. Aparicio  23:05

8

become like. He’s like going to Mount Rushmore for Philly and eat like,

Tom Pierce  23:08

championship. I never thought we’d have a football championship in my lifetime.

Nestor J. Aparicio  23:12

Right gave up.

Tom Pierce  23:16

I didn’t quit I just said I didn’t think it would happen. I didn’t I wouldn’t. I

8

Nestor J. Aparicio  23:19

never thought Peter Angeles would die. I never. I mean I’m still never getting my press credential back. But that’s neither here nor there. I’ll write about that later this summer. But to answer

Mike Ricigliano  23:27

your question, I think it’s going to be Philly or Baltimore baseball this year. You know, that’s why I could see that. Okay. One of those two and I honestly I would lean towards Philly just a little bit statistically but I think it’s one of those two teams. The

Tom Pierce  23:43

American leagues better this year. Yeah, it’s got to be tougher October the American League has got has what six teams over 500 for the Yankees or back Cleveland will you know if they do anything at the trade deadline Cleveland’s pretty solid Texas

Nestor J. Aparicio  23:58
