Nestor Aparicio  00:01

Welcome home. We are W, N, S T am 1570 Towson, Baltimore. We call this thing Baltimore positive. We’re positively going to be back down at the downtown homestead. Of our friends at Lexington market going to be there at faidley’s on Wednesday afternoon. My dude, Ivan Bates, is going to come by and talk law and order. Megan McCorkle is going to come by talk about living in Baltimore. Luke’s going to come by. We’re going to talk about football. We’re going to have the schedule out beyond Rio on Thursday night the Yankees in town this week, and all my just, I’m wearing my orange from Farnham and Durham, or just trying to be a good doobie here and play it out and hope that they don’t fall 10 games under 500 but we will have scratch offs in the Maryland lottery. I have the Maryland treasures, a really cool series of artistic these have been fun, and they’ve been lucky, which is good, because I’ll have them as well at the fishmonger’s daughter out in Catonsville. The newest place it is the faidley’s family, damihan the divine family have been years birthing this place in downtown Catonsville. I was out there the other night. It is lovely. I’m going to get back out there. They made a table just for me to do the show in the front window, and I can invite this guy over for lunch there, because he’s not that far away, but he’s like, got youth programs and senior programs, and he’s working on his own game, then he’s raising a family. RJ Shepherd is the golf pro over at Forest Park on the west side of town. They are part of the classic five golf family. They support us. We support them. We talked about getting out and hitting the little white dimple ball, and we try to get all you all on. And I had ed on because he was at Butler cabin in pimento sandwiches last time at the Masters, and he’s up here at Pine Ridge after a nice stint down at Mount. Mount Pleasant as well. But you’re out on the west side of town hitting ball, and we got the big tournament in Philly. I mean, look, you’re never going to get a major closer than this one this week, right? This PGA tournament? Right?

RJ Sheppard  01:58

No. Well, close. We did have the Senior PGA down at congressional, which is down in DC, so they do have some big events down there. But yeah, Major, yeah, pretty close to our backyard, you know, about an hour and a half up the road. So if you can get up there, give it a chance some great players in the field. You know, scotty’s going to be there, Roy’s going to be there. Cam young. He’s coming on, trying to join that big three conversation. So it’d be great to see

Nestor Aparicio  02:26

8

favorite golfer. Do you have a guy like

RJ Sheppard  02:29

Roy? Roy McElroy is my favorite? Yeah, we share the same birthday. He’s a smaller guy like me. Can hit it far, so I love his game. Yeah?

Nestor Aparicio  02:39

All right, well, this is anytime I get can I say you golf guys? Because I’m at this point, I’m 57 I’m not a golf guy, but you golf guys, the guys that live it, eat it, breathe it. My wife’s been sneezing ever since we’ve been cutting the grass out here. Wouldn’t be good for us to live on the course right

Nestor Aparicio  02:54

now. A lot of piling out there right now. Lot of tree pollen

8

Nestor Aparicio  02:57

happening

Nestor Aparicio  02:57

out

Nestor Aparicio  02:57

there right now. Um, that’s your time of the year, right? So,

RJ Sheppard  03:00

8

yeah,

Nestor Aparicio  03:00

give Well, I want to get on to the PGA and on to what happens, but I do think I watched the masters. I went over to Costas and waited to the end. It was less dramatic than I wanted to be. I think the major sort of stopped people this weekend going on. We have Preakness happening. I’m going to be out in Vegas with the Maryland party on Sunday. Everybody be watching lacrosse and golf and set, you know, the NHL, if your team’s in an NBA, if your team’s in it, or you bet on it, or whatever. But this is where golf sucks you in, right? This is where one of those things, like you can’t go. You can go play basketball if you want, over at the Y you can hit a hockey puck if you want, or whatever. But golf’s the thing. When people see it and they drive by it, and they’re in West Baltimore, they come in and they’re like, Alright, I need to learn how to play. I’m getting old now, and they find you as a pro, this is your time of the year to sell the game and to get and to find the joy in the game for yourself. But I know you see it in other people, because you teach it all day. Man, yes,

RJ Sheppard  04:00

yeah, spring is here. Weather’s been kind of iffy recently, but I think, you know, I’m looking at the forecast for next, next week. Actually, this weekend’s going to be nice. We got 80s coming up. So, yeah, golf’s here. Golf season is here. You know, people drive by, people, you know, it’s a game you can play for a lifetime, too. So a lot of guys, you know, you know, like you said, the basketball guys, football guys, baseball guys, you know, they’re kind of coming out of that, and they’re coming into golf. If you look at LeBron James, he’s he’s getting in the golf now, I don’t know if you noticed that, but he’s, like, addicted to it. Now, like, well,

Nestor Aparicio  04:33

it is something you can pick up at any point in life, yes, and once you pick it up, you need someone like you, and look for me. I need a chiropractor. I have an orthopedist on this week from GBMC. I gave blood. Apparently, you’re gonna have to have to make a few lifestyle changes with my diet, from what I’ve been told about,

8

RJ Sheppard  04:57

the results back, yeah, I

Nestor Aparicio  04:59

want to get. Royal farms back on as a sponsor, but I’m gonna have to go to the baked chicken, apparently. And, you know, I got to get off the western I need to do the Eastern fries, not the Western fries, so, you know, but nonetheless, I’m just saying, like, there is a point where, and I said this to my old farts I got together with last week, the dick Girardi and Mike Marlon. Like you guys aren’t playing pickleball, are you, you know, but there is a point, I think, for golf, even if it’s just playing putt, putt down at the beach or taking a grandchild out, or doing, I know, like, this is big doings for you in a couple of weeks with your dad and every one of you who golf, Dad, it’s, you know, British Open. It’s like, all of this stuff that goes on around these majors, where family gets involved and wives get involved and children get involved. And that really is your hope for everybody at Classic five, I think, right,

RJ Sheppard  05:50

yeah, that’s the beauty of golf. You know, anybody can play from four to 84 so, you know, like, like, you know, we’re going down to Ocean City later this week. Me, my dad, my uncle’s couple of buddies, play some golf down there, have some fun. And that’s the beauty of it. You spend four hours, or even two hours. You just want to play nine holes. Spend a lot of time with your family, friends, strangers. You know, sometimes you get paired up with strangers, but they’re all great people. You meet people, you play 18 holes with them. Now you’re best friends. So now you got a group going that’s coming out every week. Every couple of weeks we got First Tee going PJ junior league on we’re playing other courses. We just came from Chartwell Country Club yesterday down in Severna Park, so we were down there playing a match. So it’s awesome, man, golf’s here, looking forward to a great season, and keep the ball rolling. If you need help, please come and see me. A lot of guys, they just trying to get into the game, but they’re, they’re learning from their buddies, you know, their buddies they meet. They mean well, they may give them some tips here and there, just to, you know, Do this, do that, but you want to learn the real fundamentals from a professional that way. You’re not, we’re not, you know, trying to get rid of bad habits. We’re forming great habits to start with, and it’s a good building block there, from there on. So I love it, man. And we got ladies beginners classes coming up, Operation 36 I want to promote that, so it’s a great program.

Nestor Aparicio  07:09

8

What is that? What is that? Operation 3636 is my favorite number. You didn’t know that, but it’s

RJ Sheppard  07:14

true. Really,

Nestor Aparicio  07:14

anybody knows me in those it just has always been my favorite number. That’s all

RJ Sheppard  07:18

well, actually

8

Nestor Aparicio  07:18

my

Nestor Aparicio  07:18

favorite number.

RJ Sheppard  07:19

I actually just turned 36 last Monday, May 4. May the Fourth be with you. I just turned 30

Nestor Aparicio  07:24

8

also my lucky number The one time I hit the lottery. I tell John Martin, this is I’m now a lottery spokesperson, and my old boss beat me up because I got the lottery numbers wrong in the paper back in 1987 40 because that’s what I was in charge of back when I worked at the paper.

Nestor Aparicio  07:38

Yeah.

Nestor Aparicio  07:39

I mean, you went, ooh, yeah. I mean, 40 years later, my boss is still giving me manure about it, and I’m buying the crab cakes, you know, for but back in 1987 I went into East Point liquors and I played a lottery. I had $1 and I played it, and I said, if I win, I’m going to go see Springsteen at the spectrum on the tunnel love tour. I’d never seen Springsteen, and I won $80 I won eight. It wasn’t Philly. I won $80 I boxed 9369, was my jersey number when I played baseball, played hockey, had a little bit to do with Reggie Jackson, until I met him, and then he wore 44 but nine was my jersey like my favorite jersey number and 36 so 936, and so, 36 so operation 36 is that?

RJ Sheppard  08:26

What? So usually, what’s the usually par for nine holes at a golf course. You know

8

Nestor Aparicio  08:32

par?

RJ Sheppard  08:33

Yeah, usually,

Nestor Aparicio  08:35

I mean, you’re talking about pro east, 72

RJ Sheppard  08:39

8

watch for 18 that’s for 18 holes, okay, that’s for 18 holes. So we just cut it in half for

Nestor Aparicio  08:44

36 Okay, fair,

RJ Sheppard  08:45

right? So the goal is to shoot 36 so the first level,

Nestor Aparicio  08:49

see, I wasn’t listening to the teacher already. This is why I’m a lousy student. For you golf pros, I I missed the first question. I’m sorry. Go ahead. No,

8

RJ Sheppard  08:57

you had it, right, but you just did it for 18 holes. For nine holes, it’s 36 so we’re starting to people. So a lot of times the complaint is beginners, they don’t get on the golf course, right? They’re just at the putting green. They’re just on the reins. They never get time. Oh,

Nestor Aparicio  09:11

you’re afraid of losing a ball, dude, you know what I mean? Like, literally, it’s a long day if you don’t know what you’re doing playing golf,

RJ Sheppard  09:18

right? Right? So we have this course here. So we’re starting them. We they do. They take classes, but we also take them on the golf course. Every other week, they start from 25 yards from the hole, and the goal was to shoot 36 for nine holes. So for each hole, the goal was to shoot a four from that from that 25 yards.

Nestor Aparicio  09:36

8

So it’s like

Nestor Aparicio  09:37

so once they

Nestor Aparicio  09:37

put with weight to the wedge

RJ Sheppard  09:40

walk, we’re just off. So they’re going to chip, all right, all

8

Nestor Aparicio  09:43

right.

RJ Sheppard  09:43

So chipping and putting get that dialed in. Then we move back to 50 yards, level two, then 100 yards, level three. So

Nestor Aparicio  09:51

there is something about seeing the course at different distances, right, that allows you to muscle down instead of muscling up. Because all of us want to go out and just beat the crap out of the ball at the range, right? So we’re

RJ Sheppard  10:03

8

teaching them how to get the ball in the hole, nuance,

Nestor Aparicio  10:06

nuance, all right,

RJ Sheppard  10:08

in the hole in the least amount of shots. So it’s a great way. We just started our spring session see

Nestor Aparicio  10:14

my

8

Nestor Aparicio  10:14

wife could handle that. That would be a great way for my wife to learn golf instead of taking on the big banana here’s 330 yards, and you got to hit it in and it’s into the woods, and then and it’s in another woods, went up onto the went over to get

RJ Sheppard  10:31

frustrating. And they, you know, gets frustrating for them, and they kind of, it’s not right, it’s not fun anymore. So we have a great time. We did the spring sessions just wrapping up. We’re going to start the summer session here in June. So give us a call. We’ll get you signed up. Any ladies. We got juniors too, so we got that, and we got summer camps coming up. So we got some great things coming up, instruction wise, programming wise, and also, you know, just come out and play, have a great time. Of course, in great shape and looking forward to a great

Nestor Aparicio  11:00

year. 2900 Hillsdale road, right over in west side of town, Forest Park golf course. My dude, RJ Shepherd, defending champion here, repeat offender on the Baltimore positive. You give me a little history lesson about Forest Park. 1934 I’m assuming that was a very white neighborhood in 1934 was a golf course, and it was probably very suburban and a long way from downtown, and a horse and a carriage ride on the first first Fords that were built, those were going on be 100 years, 92 years, 92 years. So obviously, West Baltimore heavily African American. You’re African American. We talked about Tiger Woods and his role in all of this. What? What’s the modern part of that makes your golf course? How has it survived all this long? And obviously, people in your side of town, there’s a these are thought to say, well, African Americans don’t play golf, or they don’t have access. Or, you know, it’s Country Club, and it’s $500 around. And this is expensive, and that’s expensive. You didn’t have any problem finding the game, and your dad, and there’s a long history on your golf course of having people come out and learn the game.

RJ Sheppard  12:09

8

Yeah, I think the big thing is just being for the community. You know, community, like you said, it changed, you know, over this 92 years, you know, kind of different backgrounds, different cultures, but it’s just being for the community to serve the community at large. So, you know, we want to provide great customer service as well. You know, we’re a lot of times beginners or new people get into the game and they’re trying to, they’re kind of treated, as, I don’t want to say it, like, why are you here? Kind of like, you know, you’re distracting. You know, we have a we have a thing going. You’re you don’t know what you’re doing. Why are you here? But we want to be welcoming. Dude.

Nestor Aparicio  12:51

I’m always afraid of wearing the wrong shoes, having a shirt that doesn’t work the right way. You know, I think there’s a thought about being on a golf course where I’m being judged is like, my allowed to have a ponytail? Here am I? Am I allowed to let like because it’s a quiet game, right? Like, you know, anybody that listen? I’m a loud guy, and I grew up with the Colts and the Orioles and sporting events and doing all that I had never gone to. I’ve only been to a handful of golf tournaments I’ve been to BMW last couple years. Thank you. Curio wellness, that had me out. But there is a different etiquette part, like even going to a tennis match. The first time I ever went to tennis 40 years ago. I’m like, It’s really quiet here. It doesn’t feel that quiet on TV. Or maybe in 1980 it didn’t feel that way Wimbledon or whatever. But there is a golf part where, if you’ve seen Happy Gilmore, for crying out loud, or the trash open out in Arizona, but there is a point where there’s etiquette, and they’re sort of like, I don’t know what I’m doing. Do I fit in? Do I belong? I know I’m going to shank the ball. So the minute they see me hit the ball, they this is me in South America last month. They I look Hispanic, until I start talking. Then they start, they speak Spanish to me, and I’m like, No, I just look Hispanic. I don’t, I can’t speak it. But I think when you you’re not a great golfer, and you show up, there is a point where, like, where do I start so I don’t embarrass myself, because you’re going to lose balls and you’re going to shake it’s part of, like, learning the game. I’ve never done it. I mean, I played a lot of baseball. When I first learned to play, I told you norm for Koco’s key down to furnace Creek 3035, years ago, I held it like a baseball. I mean, I didn’t even know how to hold the club, like, literally,

Nestor Aparicio  14:32

right,

RJ Sheppard  14:32

right? Yeah. So, yeah, we want to be welcoming. And you know the main thing is keep peace, a good place, pace of play, right? So you can be, you can be as horrible as you want, but long as you keep up with the group in front of you, you’ll be good in our book, right? Long as you’re not holding up the golf course, not not backing up the people behind you. And we’re here to help, you know, we got pros here to help teach me myself. Got a couple other guys that helped me out. We do clinics and the Junior Golf. Ladies golf, everything. So we’re here to help and and help you better enjoy this great game of golf, because it’s a great game, and want you to enjoy it and play it for a lifetime.

8

Nestor Aparicio  15:08

Operation 36 is that what this is

RJ Sheppard  15:11

called? That’s the that’s the beginner golf program. Yep.

Nestor Aparicio  15:13

Yeah, see, like I was going to ask you some knucklehead comes out like me. What do you do with them? I mean, I know how to hold the club now. I’ve obviously hit the ball before I you know, I know top tracer in the technology talk about the analytics and baseball and all of that. I mean, you can really correct. You can become better at golf, if you wish to be, and you fall in love with the game. There’s so many ways to get better at it, not just to mention the clubs and all of that. Then maybe it was when you were a kid out there banging around and hacking, right?

RJ Sheppard  15:43

8

Yes, yeah, technology, and that’s the beauty of it, too. It has an app that comes with it so they can track. I can track when they practice, so they can log in

Nestor Aparicio  15:54

their practice. Oh,

Nestor Aparicio  15:55

man, teacher knows if I did homework.

RJ Sheppard  15:57

Yes, yes, yes. So I love that aspect as well. And it’s videos that they can watch. I can, I can, I can look and see if they watch these videos on the grip, on the posture, on the, you know, the takeaway, different things, aspects of the swing. So I think it’s great, and we’re going to keep building from it. And I think it’s going to be great getting beginners on the golf course and growing the game and having making them enjoy it better. Yeah,

8

Nestor Aparicio  16:25

RJ Shepard’s here. He is the golf pro over at Forest Park. They’re part of the classic five. All right, real quick, because I really brought you on to talk about this tournament Philadelphia. You know, I mean, first off, the live thing looks like it’s about to go under. And, I mean, the whole hierarchy of golf over the last 2436 months, it’s been screwy. It’s involved Trump. It’s involved Saudi money and dirty money and blood money and a bunch of players. But this is, you know, this, this is the big one here, in regard to the PGA this week, it’s right up the road in Philadelphia,

RJ Sheppard  17:00

yeah, yeah. Second major of the year, scotty’s defending champs. He’s gonna be looking to defend. He won last year down in North Carolina, Quail Hollow, which actually they just played there last week. First time winner won, Ray tan, he’s from Norway, but yeah, it’s gonna be awesome. Should be great. Great turnout up there in Philly. Should have nice weather, so it should be going

Nestor Aparicio  17:22

though,

RJ Sheppard  17:23

8

I’m not going. I’m going to Ocean City, so I’m we’re gonna play some golf, but we’ll watch it on TV,

Nestor Aparicio  17:30

so you don’t have that on the but there’s no bucket list for you to do masters. PGA,

RJ Sheppard  17:34

Oh yes, oh yes, yes. For sure, for sure. Yeah. But hopefully they can come to Baltimore. I went to BMW. But I like being

Nestor Aparicio  17:43

some big ones. And there’s a tournament jerseys had some big ones too, you know, yeah.

8

RJ Sheppard  17:48

But I like for them to come to us, for them to come to our backyard. Hopefully, one day they’ll, we’ll get a major at caves or something, Baltimore Country Club. Maybe they’ll probably be the two top courses that’ll get one. But, um, yeah, definitely, that’s on the bucket list. But, um, yeah, I want to play some golf too, right now. But, yeah, but

Nestor Aparicio  18:08

you know, you guys, you get out, you get itchy about this, because you Yeah, you live it, you breathe it, you teach it. I mean, how you don’t get to play much, right? I mean, that’s the story of every pro, literally,

RJ Sheppard  18:18

right? No, we don’t, but, you know, we play when we can, I try at least get in a few holes, like nine holes in the evening before I go home. That’s a big thing for me, just to keep the game sharp. And Seattle,

Nestor Aparicio  18:31

8

yeah, hour and a

RJ Sheppard  18:32

half, about an hour one hour, yeah, yeah.

Nestor Aparicio  18:36

Well, I hit the damn ball as good as you maybe I would, you know, wouldn’t lose as many balls. RJ shepherds, here, he is the golf pro over at Forest Park. Hey man, thanks for coming on. Always a pleasure. I mean, Orioles, we’re trying to fix them. I’m doing my best.

RJ Sheppard  18:49

I’m glad we got the way yesterday. Big series this week, but we’ll see. Yeah, hopefully we get a wild card. That’s probably our best luck, our best

8

Nestor Aparicio  18:57

dude. I picked him to win 92 games. I’m feeling pretty foolish, right about now, right? I mean, I believed in effing

RJ Sheppard  19:04

I don’t blame you. I don’t blame you. Yeah, I don’t blame you. But, um,

Nestor Aparicio  19:08

I was drinking the orange Kool Aid, is what I was doing. RJ, I think, yes. RJ, nobody had to get in touch with you. Just come over to the pub, ask for you, right? Simple as that,

RJ Sheppard  19:16

8

yeah. Phone numbers, 41044844653, give us a call. Classic five golf com. Check us out. Yeah, come see us here.

Nestor Aparicio  19:29

Nestor Aparicio  21:29
