SPEAKERS

Seth Elkin, Nestor Aparicio

Nestor Aparicio  00:01

Welcome home. We are W, N, S, T. Am 1570 Towson, Baltimore. We are Baltimore, positive, positively getting us through NFL draft weekend. Here. I’m wearing my fun cop and state shirt because it’s gotten chillier and it’s going to get warm again. And I don’t know what’s going on with the weather, but I do know we’re going to be doing the Maryland crab cake tour multiple times in the coming weeks, where Koco’s This week, on Thursday, we will be at Pizza John’s next Friday on the first of May, then the seventh at Planet Fitness and Timonium, the 13th at faidley’s in Lexington market. We’re looking forward to getting out. We will have the Maryland treasures scratch offs a very popular batch, I don’t know, the orange one, which is the boardwalk. People keep taking this one from me. I think it’s because it’s sunny and it’s fun, but they’re all fun. Seth Elkin is joining me now. The Pittsburgh Pirates have not swept the Orioles this week, so therefore I have nothing to be ashamed of. We’re hitting grand slams. I mean, I’m thinking John Martin’s just disappeared, because there’s been two grand slams since he left. He’s got to go figure out this 10 grand. He’s going to owe some of these lucky, fast play Oriole home run riches contestants, but happy NFL draft weekend to 80 degrees and beautiful in Pittsburgh, Virginians and not this weekend. And we’re all going to have new football players by Sunday. So this is a fun week, right? Seth, yeah,

Seth Elkin  01:19

I think the region is generally looking forward to it back there. It’s my it’s my home. I will not be there, but a lot of people

Nestor Aparicio  01:27

8

will apparently, what’s your hometown? Like, like, I’m not from Baltimore, I’m from Dundalk. You know, where are you from?

Seth Elkin  01:33

I am from Beaver, Pennsylvania. So not to be not to be confused with Beaver Falls, which

Nestor Aparicio  01:39

it’s not Joe Namath, which is where Joe

Seth Elkin  01:40

Namath is from, separate town, but very close. Yes. So how come is it next town over? It’s two towns over, but, yeah, it’s the same general

8

Nestor Aparicio  01:48

vicinity you grew up two towns away from Joe Namath, where you grew up Joe, Joe

Seth Elkin  01:53

Namath and Mike Ditka and Tony Dorsett and Ty law. I mean, Beaver

Nestor Aparicio  01:56

Falls is famous? Is there anybody from Beaver that like played for

Seth Elkin  02:01

8

John Burkett, who was a pitcher. Oh, sure, absolutely. Yeah. John Burke went to went to Beaver High School, the same high school that I went to, several years older than me, but, but pitched for the Giants very successfully in a couple of

Nestor Aparicio  02:13

other teams. So people don’t know this, I’ll just do a little Dundalk reference here, because, I mean, don’t get me starting to sing the Dundalk alma mater. But when I went on the radio back in the 90s, my 35th year, but back in 1995 96 Dundalk High School, and I went to high school with James Parrish, late, great James Parrish and went to temple. Passed away long, long time ago, but we went to high school together. He played in the Super Bowl for the Steelers and the Steelers cowboy Super Bowl, if you remember, the Barry Switzer Super Bowl, the Neil O’Donnell Super Bowl, I’d like to forget that one. That’s right, you forgot that one. So Marvin Lewis says same thing. So JP played in that game, and he also played for the Cowboys at one point in his career, very short career, but he passed away. And I remember from the high school Mike by Leckie was a 76 Dundalk graduate who pitched in the World Series for the Braves that year. So we had in the World Series in October, and then the Super Bowl, and then January. We had Dundalk high graduates on the grand stage in both of those events. And I just thought, Man, I wonder how many high schools could actually you know, that’s done, dog, so I’ll start to sing my Dundalk praises, but and your Pittsburgh praises. If anybody goes up to Pittsburgh this weekend, check out the Clemente Museum, because it was cool. And I had my man Dwayne reader on a couple weeks ago, and the weather will be good, and I don’t know, we’ll have draft picks and all that, but we have, at least on the baseball side, Seth Salamis to talk about here, extra innings and walk off Salamis and all sorts of Salamis. The Home Run Rich is kind of alive even we’re not winning enough,

Seth Elkin  03:46

but we’re getting grand slams. We’ve had now two grand slams in the first month of the season. We had three. All last

Nestor Aparicio  03:55

year, we had six. Two years ago, I remember six being the number, and we were chasing that, and then we weren’t so good last year three. Only three last year.

8

Seth Elkin  04:02

Really, I looked it up. I wanted to see through the magic of baseball. Reference, I can tell you,

Nestor Aparicio  04:06

it was three last year. So last place, I don’t know,

Seth Elkin  04:10

but we the latest one was the game on April 20. Bryant Lindsay from Baltimore won $5,500 he got that $5,000 for the Grand Slam, plus $500 for being selected as the contestant of the game, and that is our second one. We also had Judith Franco on April 13, who got a grand slam and two other home runs in that game. She won $6,500 so plenty of chances still to get in on this. We just had the second drawing for contestant of the game, but we have the monthly so you can get your $5 home run riches walk off winnings fast play tickets at any Maryland Lottery retailer, and you can enter any of those tickets into my lottery rewards for the chance at being the contestant of the game or the VIP contestant of the game. And the first one of those is coming up. On April 29 Angela Ruffin from colesville is going to be our contestant of the game for that night at the game against the Houston Astros, and she will be in the ballpark in the truest club, and we will be with her, watching and and filming and hopefully getting a big celebration. Maybe we get another grand slam. Maybe we equal last year’s Grand Slam total on that night, and Angela can celebrate $5,000 right there with us. So we’re hoping for that, and that’s a lot of fun. And you can get all the details on how all this works at MD lottery.com,

Nestor Aparicio  05:33

8

Seth, I know you think I’m bougie and I’ve been to the truest club level. I haven’t. I did go to the Oregon last Wednesday. Have really good seats. Thank you. Curio wellness. Wendy, I was down right on the on deck, so of course, was 88 degrees and the sun, I mean, I’ve soaked through my shirt and whatnot. Played the Arizona Diamondbacks, a tourist club will give you

Seth Elkin  05:51

seats in the air conditioning. I know about

Nestor Aparicio  05:53

all of this because I’ve got friends that keep going to the to this club, right? And every time they go up there, I see him on social media, and I did see Ethan Giffin. I took a little picture with him up there on Wednesday when I went to the game business person special. I felt special. So every time they go out to this, this truest club, they don’t brag about the cushy seats or the shade or any of that, they just put pictures of the food up. So I know what the food looks like there, because that’s what they share. It’s, it’s the shrimps and the crab cakes and the desserts and, you know. And I thought like, if Ethan had handed me, like, some of the peach Melbourne or whatever they had there that day, like, would that be against the rules to pass the food over? But I did feel like, can you hand me one of those tarts? You know, I thought that would be the thing to do, but I won’t do that. Next week. I know Doug is going to go out and be a part of all of this, and I’ll find out about all it, but I am, you know, it’s weird like I’m Baltimore positive, and they haven’t played well, but at least the lead story is they’re hitting some grand slams. Finally, right? That that’s the, that’s the, that’s the headline here.

Seth Elkin  06:56

We love to see it, and we get excited along with our players whenever it happens. So yeah, very happy about that, and lots of chances to still get in on that as the season rolls along here.

8

Nestor Aparicio  07:07

All right, so look, I give these tickets out. I’ll be doing it at Koco’s. I do the crab cake tour. Come see me next week at Pizza John’s and down like, by the way, crab races on May 13 down at Fayette Lee’s, and we’re getting the fishmonger’s daughter up. But I give these out, and then I have the Maryland lottery app, and I scan sometimes for people see if they win. I get balloons. It’s fun for me too. But you got some stories this week about some really kind of out of left field, progressive in different ways, that people have won that aren’t traditional, like I scratched it, I won 20 bucks? Or even if I scratch it 150 grand, those are more traditional than when progressives add up or when people don’t know that they’ve won. Like, I remember, Rich is a little bit like that. You get get your name picked, you get that phone call that you might deny, but you get some great stories this week about Powerball and Mega Millions have other ways to win than winning like $150

Seth Elkin  08:01

million right? Yeah, we’ve, we’ve had a couple of prizes that have popped up here, actually, that we’re still waiting on having these claims. So we’re glad to get the word out about these. Let’s go back. First of all, we’ll start with multi match. Multi matches, our in state jackpot game. It’s drawn Mondays and Thursdays, so similar to Powerball and Mega Millions, where the jackpot continues to rise until someone hits the jackpot. But of course, it’s only played here in Maryland, so the jackpots are never going to be up in those hundreds of millions of dollar ranges, but the multi match jackpot starts at $500,000 and we had a $1.7 million multi match jackpot that was won in St Mary’s County in March, and that one has not been claimed yet. But on the heels of that, just last week, we had another multi match jackpot winner, $570,000 that was won on a ticket sold in Colombia, and we’re still waiting on both of those winners to come in and claim a multi match is a $2 jackpot game, and for $2 you get three rows of numbers, three lines of numbers from a range of one to 43 you can pick the top line yourself, but then the second and third lines are selected at random by the lottery computer system, and you can win prizes in multiple ways. As the name of the game implies, if you match anywhere between three and all six numbers on a single line, you can win prizes matching all six on any of the three lines of your ticket wins you that jackpot. So you have three lines on your ticket, if you got three chances for that $2 ticket at hitting the jackpot on each one of those tickets. And then there are other ways to win using all three lines of numbers on your ticket. And you can get all of the details on the price structure at MD lottery.com but a very cool game, our in state jackpot game, and we love when people hit that one,

Nestor Aparicio  09:49

when you’ve had two winners, 1.7 and other 570,000 and neither one have claimed. Yeah, we’re waiting. We’re waiting to see possible that they don’t know that they won. They threw the ticket away. It’s it

Seth Elkin  10:01

8

is it is possible. We certainly hope that it’s not happening. We do everything we can to get the word out as soon as we know that there’s been a jackpot one. We put something up on our website, we put information out on our social media, and we put the word out and make sure everybody knows that we had a jackpot hit. And then, of course, if you’re looking at what the jackpot is, it resets after it’s been won back to $500,000 for the next drawing. So anytime you see it down there at that $500,000 level, you know it just got hit. So you can take a look and

Nestor Aparicio  10:29

see where that’s right on the front of MD lottery, right here, 510,000 right now, as we go on Seth Elkin is my guest. He communicates for the Maryland lottery. We’re trying to communicate and find those winning tickets. That’s just it’s a lot of money. And I just think, like, if I want 1,000,007 I wouldn’t wait too long. You know what I mean? Like, I’d be wanting to, like, hey, spring’s coming. Summer’s coming. I gotta, you know, I gotta, I gotta, get in on this.

Seth Elkin  10:49

You know? Well, there is also a $500,000 Powerball double play prize that’s out there in the April 11 drawing. Somebody who bought a ticket at the shoppers in Largo, in Prince, George’s County, won a $500,000 prize in the double play drawing of Powerball. Now double play is an optional feature that you can add when you buy a Powerball ticket. Powerball cost you $2 if you add the double play option, it’s an additional dollar. So it takes your price to $3 but for that $3 ticket, you get a ticket that’s good for two separate drawings. There’s the Powerball drawing that happens at 11 o’clock every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday night, and then about 30 minutes later, there is the double play drawing that occurs. And double plays got its own separate prize structure with a top prize of $10 million so this $500,000 prize is the second tier prize in the Powerball double play prize,

Nestor Aparicio  11:43

strike good tier, half millions. A good tier,

8

Seth Elkin  11:44

half a million dollars. So somebody out there is holding a ticket worth half a million dollars that bought their ticket in Largo for the April 11 drawing, and we’re hoping to meet that person very, very soon. So couple of interesting ways to win. There are lots of ways to play. And you know, these tickets are, you know, multi match tickets, as we mentioned, were $2 Powerball, even with the double play option added, is $3 and it gives you a ticket that’s good for two separate drawings. So there’s some value to it there, and lots of interesting ways to play.

Nestor Aparicio  12:14

Well, we’re always having fun. This time last year, we did the art contest that begat these Maryland treasures tickets. And this is kind of a fun thing, but you know me, if I can’t get the Maryland treasures, I’m always about Miss Pac Man, because I was, you know, I am of that age that I played a lot of Pac Man, and then Miss Pac Man, and then Donkey Kong, and then burger time, all at the mercadoes at East Point mall, put the quarters in there, had a slice of pizza with Larry. It was fun. But Miss Pac Man, it’s back. Yes, yeah,

Seth Elkin  12:45

Miss Pac Man. And, you know, we love these things that connect to people in exactly the way you’re talking about nostalgia or personal connection. I think that’s what the Maryland treasures. Tickets are really all this Pac Man

Nestor Aparicio  12:55

8

glided a little bit more after the cherries and, you know, like all that stuff.

Seth Elkin  12:58

Yes, yep, the Ms Pac Man tickets are out there. They launched April 17, and you can win a top prize of $30,000 on the ticket. But any non winning this Pac Man ticket, if you really want to indulge in the nostalgia, you enter your non winning Miss Pac Man tickets for a chance to win a Ms Pac Man home arcade unit. So how cool would that be? You wouldn’t have nothing

Nestor Aparicio  13:21

would get done. It would just wouldn’t

Seth Elkin  13:22

have to come up with quarters anymore. You’d have it

8

Nestor Aparicio  13:25

right there in your living Miss Pac Man was a little bit it had a little like, a little more feminine, like, ding, ding, ding, kind of sound to it. But I do know the difference between Miss Pac Man and Mr. Pac Man and chasing the bananas and the cherries and the peaches around. But there is a miss Pac Man chomp your way to 30k I love that. You can check that out. It’s empty lottery.com. Alright, so last but not least, and this is kind of a weird game show. Part of this, we’ve been running the ads for this for weeks. We had a couple of winners. How many people get to spend the big spend?

Seth Elkin  13:54

There are a total of eight top prize tickets in the big spin game.

Nestor Aparicio  13:59

Last week, we had two. How many

Seth Elkin  14:01

8

have already been redeemed? So there are still six of them out there waiting to be claimed, and those six people will get a chance to come down here to our office and spin the big spin wheel. It is a game show style wheel. It’s about six feet tall, and the prizes on there range from $50,000 up to a top prize of 250,000

Nestor Aparicio  14:22

price is not wrong. I will tell you that right now,

Seth Elkin  14:24

anybody who walks in the door with one of those six remaining tickets has already won at least $50,000 as the smallest amount they could win. But we certainly hope we get somebody to hit that 250,000 it did not happen the first time we did the big spin ticket in 2024 this is the second edition of it. It’s been very, very popular. People love the idea of getting the chance to spin that wheel.

Nestor Aparicio  14:45

They let you in there. Like, when there’s somebody wins, they come down. How many people are I know we’re filming it, and I know there’s, like, official things that have to happen so that it’s on the up and up, because that’s the way we run things at the Maryland lottery. But like, how many people get to watch this person spin it? Because I. Thinking, like, even on that game show the pub Barker did, please spay and neuter your animals too. I agree with that. But there were, you know, there was, like, some commotion, you know, I want a little commotion. If, do I get to bring people? If I spend

8

Seth Elkin  15:15

a wheel, can I bring, like, Absolutely, people have brought members of their family with them. And much fun with that, members of our staff that are there as well, and it’s, yeah, it’s already

Nestor Aparicio  15:25

won 50 grand. You showed up. You’re ahead of the game, and you’re spinning the try to

Seth Elkin  15:29

win more, period, right? It’s, it’s, it’s an enjoyable experience. You can tell there’s a lot of smiles in that room when that happens. I hope we

Nestor Aparicio  15:36

8

find these other six people. So go out and play, play, play. It’s Merrill lottery. Please play responsibly. Seth’s always here to talk about that as well. Did I leave anything out here this week? I mean, I really am having fun. It’s not often. I mean, I’ve been doing lottery for a long time that I get four different you know, I could say to people, which one do you want? And, you know, some people take the horses, some people take the lobsters and the, excuse me, the crabs and the herons. And some people take the bridges. They they think it’s the Key Bridge, but it’s really the Bay Bridge, because there’s two spans. So these have been, like, super fun for me. Yeah, we, we

Seth Elkin  16:08

love the creativity. And again, just the way people connect, you know, any any piece of art, you know, there’s a natural connection that you have to it when you look at it, especially when it’s images that are as familiar as these are. And, you know, we asked, we ran a contest to have Maryland artists create artwork about the state of Maryland that celebrated the treasures of Maryland. That was what the whole theme of the contest was about,

Nestor Aparicio  16:33

you and me, dude, Ocean City, August, right here. You me, John right in Mako, right the convention center.

16:38

What do you think? Yeah, I will be

8

Nestor Aparicio  16:41

there so. And you know what I have to do in order to go there? I have to go across. I don’t have to go because I’m not going through Delaware. You’re across the bridge right here. So you have to cross the bridge to get there. And then when you cross the bridge, this is great recommendation, especially for Jens from Pittsburgh. Or not, is it stopped down at Blackwater, when you see all these birds, and you have the greatest time on the way down just Cambridge, and you just make a right turn. And then when you get down to Ocean City, you go south, and you go to Assateague, and you see the ponies. They don’t have dollar bills on them, but they, they might. Is that good? Was that a Maryland travelog?

Seth Elkin  17:11

There you go. You just, you just did an ad for for Maryland treasury. I just pissed off

Nestor Aparicio  17:14

everybody in Western Maryland because we left them out somehow.

Seth Elkin  17:17

8

But we’ll get well, you know, two of the artists are from Frederick County, one from Frederick, and one from Mount Airy. So I saw the

Nestor Aparicio  17:22

one gal from Frederick. I don’t know which one she did, but I saw the piece at MD lottery on her and I thought, you know these artists, and they’re like, That woman has a real was a real artist and whatnot. And I thought, that’s kind of cool. You know, this is a great entree, and it was great talking about it last year, but actually holding the tickets is awesome. Yeah, Mike

Seth Elkin  17:41

Powell, who’s our video content creator, on our communications team, did video profiles of all four of the artists. You’re talking about, Julia Chipless from Frederick, who exactly she made the Ocean City image that one’s hers. So, oh,

Nestor Aparicio  17:52

okay, we’ll tell her it’s orange, the orange ticket.

8

Seth Elkin  17:58

But, yeah, we’ve got video profiles of all four of them that Mike created that are on MD lottery.com there’s a Maryland treasures page there that’s got all of those videos. You can find out a little bit more about the artists and their work and

Nestor Aparicio  18:11

see these benches in Ocean City. Do you have any idea how much fun we used to have in the 80s and 90s, and sitting on these benches and talking to girls when they went by dogs and like all the stuff that we did in Ocean City, you know?

Seth Elkin  18:21

Now, that’s the end of our commercial, right there.

Nestor Aparicio  18:25

8

Now, these were fun, man, this was a good time. Ocean City, Maryland. I love it. So that’s, that’s my little travel log. You love it too, because we get together every year. Seth Elkin is here. He’ll be rooting for the pirates this week, and I’ll be rooting for the I’m worried about the Oriole. Seth, I’m just, I’m I’m at, I’m at, I’m not at the like the it’s not a red light on the dashboard, but the little orange lights on, and it’s blinking a little bit right now, I’m worried.

Seth Elkin  18:49

Well, we got two grand slams so far, so we’re ahead of the game on as far as that goes.

Nestor Aparicio  18:54

That means the bases were loaded. That’s good. That’s better than one hit or no hits. That’s good. That’s walks. Maybe get some guys on base.

Seth Elkin  19:01

You know, traffic on the base pads. That’s what

8

Nestor Aparicio  19:03

you want. So good and better pitching. Hey, I will. I’ll see you hopefully soon. Did I leave anything out? I got everything in, didn’t I? I think

Also the fast play we got Spring Fling going on there. As I as I peruse, at some point we’re gonna get one of these Mega Millions, or power balls back up to six, 800 900 million. So my wife goes by the Royal farms to be like, I gotta buy some tickets. Marilyn, lottery sponsor everything we do. They put us out on the road to give away these Maryland treasures that we talked about with all the great artists. I have four different cards or scratch offs to give away. I’ll be doing that at Koco’s on Thursday of this week. Next Friday, we’re back at Pizza John’s in Essex. I’m really looking forward to that, because I get friends together, I can get the french fries and gravy because I can’t eat it all myself. And then on the seventh we’re going to be a planet fitness working it off in Timonium. Make sure you stop by for that. And also, on the 13th. 18th. We’re doing the crab races. Ivan Bates is coming down. They got some celebrities coming down the fadeleys, and Lex in the market for the crab races. If BJ surhoff shows up, it means we’re all going to lose and then we’re going to be opening the fishmonger’s daughter. I’ll be back out in Catonsville for that. I got a little sneak preview the other night. I’m not supposed to talk about it. You’re going to love the fishmonger’s daughter, that’s all I’m going to say. I am Nestor. We are W, N, S T am 1570 Towson, Baltimore. We never stop talking Baltimore. Positive.
