SPEAKERS

Luke Jones, Nestor Aparicio, Speaker 1

Nestor Aparicio  00:01

Welcome home. We are W, N, S, T am 1570 tassel, Baltimore. We are Baltimore. Positive, positively, getting ready for the Maryland crab cake tour that I’m taking everywhere. I’ll get it back to Costas. I’m wearing my Costa shirt because it’s like drinking this week in the derby. Yours isn’t coming in the race, isn’t it? Pimlico, it’s dead Laurel. And I will have Donna brothers on next week. I will have Randy Moss on. Dick Girardi, I’m going to track him down. I hope everybody still goes to the OTB at the spa Timonium and participates. I will be participating across the street at Planet Fitness with Mark Viviano. My AI pal, Dennis O’Donovan from profit Comm, our pal, Zach Dermer, performer, and Dermer the comfort guys who sponsor this whole thing that we do around here called the Maryland craft cake tour. And April be with me. I do have my I have my funny Planet Fitness hat. I threatened to get it out here. I’m going to

Nestor Aparicio  00:59

get

Nestor Aparicio  00:59

it out because the Orioles have won a couple games in a couple games in a row. I’ll make it my Oriole celebration hat here, every time they win, I get to wear my funny Planet Fitness hat. Be like the goof on the roof or Bob rivers back in the day when they didn’t win for a month and a half back in 88 also brought to you by friends at GBMC. And I’ve had two GBMC guests on I don’t know if they’re telling me something, Luke, but they got me an orthopedist now with a great French name, del enois, and he had a great hat in a bow tie. And we had a great conversation about how I’m trying to avoid the hip surgery, the knee surgery, all the things that all my pals are going through that I’m trying to avoid is the old athlete and athletic supporter that I once was. That’s why I’m going to plan a fitness and getting on a yoga mat. They’ve won a couple of games after, you know, we brought the hatchet to bury them, of course. Dude, is there anything? Can I just say this? We’ll get on to them winning. We can get on to Bassett Boz, you know, Brandon Young. Get on the all of that. We’ll get on to the A’s the Sacramento Las Vegas via Oakland, sort of from Kansas City. A’s in a minute. But is there anything more morose than watching a baseball game in that blimp in Miami? I mean, I’m just being honest, like, when the game comes on, it feels like a C league soccer game from some place in Portugal. I mean, it’s unbelievable how Bush it feels and looks and sounds in every every way. Montreal, 25 years ago, with Tampa, we go down there three times a year. Used to, I don’t. I don’t know what these people are doing when I watch this. I really don’t.

Luke Jones  02:37

It’s funny, because the only time I’ve attended a game, there it was the 2017 All Star game. So the place was full. That said, it comes across as such a sterile, dreadful environment. And

Nestor Aparicio  02:54

would you even want to go there? If you were in Miami, who would fly there and go there? I said to Jen, if I would rather be sitting at the barn Versailles, eating rope of a doing good things. You know,

Luke Jones  03:08

there’s also the factor that the roof is never opened. I mean, even when it’s nice in Miami, and I get it why, I understand why they have a roof. I mean, it’s Miami, especially in the summertime and it rains. But I I remember vividly that when we were there for the all star game nine years ago now, it was quite pleasant in Miami that day. I mean, it wasn’t, it wasn’t 100 degrees and dreadfully humid or anything like that, and the roof was closed. And that’s why I’m so I have, I’ve only seen indoor baseball a couple times in my life, but it’s such a weird kind of depressing experience. I mean, even and obviously, games,

Nestor Aparicio  03:49

have you seen you? You saw two with me, right?

Luke Jones  03:52

I think I’m up to four now, because it was two at Rogers Center last year, the 2017 All Star game in Miami, as I said to you, and then game three of the 2023 al DS in Arlington.

Nestor Aparicio  04:05

Oh, right, that was us together on the roof there. And

Luke Jones  04:08

that was a great atmosphere. But it feels like you’re like you’re playing baseball in an airplane hangar or something like,

Nestor Aparicio  04:15

I agree with you, man, the first indoor game I ever saw was in Toronto, and like, 9293 my buddies and I jumped in a car. Kevin Eck, we drove up to fill to to Toronto together, and we stayed at the harbor Castle West and Brady Anderson was on the team. I was doing radio. I did radio from the field that night, and like I remember being in the sound of the ball, the sound of the bat, the sound of everything. Now I’m going back now 35 years for me. So I have had many more experiences in Houston and Arizona and Tampa and, you know, all of those places I, you know, even kingdom. I went to games the kingdom I like I yeah, I would agree with you. The first time you walk in there, it’s not. Natural. I would agree with that. To me, I get it more, much, much more when I see a concert. I saw you two out in the Indianapolis dome a couple of years ago and back. It’s it’s not as good. I mean, I went to see Springsteen at your place, Syracuse dome,

Luke Jones  05:23

the carrier it’s not called the Carrier Dome anymore, but Carrier Dome

Nestor Aparicio  05:26

it like even the videos I shot that night, they’re in autumn, they’re awful. The videos reflect how bad the sound is in those buildings for music, and it’s it like I would not go see Bruno Mars in Toronto, or Taylor Swift in a dome. You know what? I mean, I just wouldn’t like it would be awful for no matter how much you pay for it. But the baseball thing, I’ve kind of like, I can get around on it when there’s a bunch of people, like in Texas, it probably didn’t feel as domey to you in Texas, in Toronto, because it was full when you were there, right?

Luke Jones  06:01

The atmosphere was way better. I mean, right, so, so the natural, it’s funny to say natural, because it’s not natural, the unnatural feeling that comes with playing inside, playing baseball in what feels like a giant factory or an airplane hangar, or whatever description you want to use, if you couple that with the fact that there are only a few 1000 people in there, which is what it’s been in Miami the last couple nights. Yeah, it’s just very strange. I mean, it’s, I never hated Tampa, by the way, you know, like I went there in 15 I’ve been there my wife threw first pitch out, and Rick Vaughn’s coming on next week. He’s just come on this week, and we’re doing this whole thing after Glenn Davis came up. I needed the Vaughn or the wild thing to come on tell some stories. But, I mean, he ran the rays going into that stadium. He’ll talk about it honestly. You know, from all of the warts and all of that, it was not that was a place I could make a case like I’ve laid in the sun all day, and you’ve driven by it a couple times, right? You’ve never been

Nestor Aparicio  07:00

in it, and before the roof blew off and all that, I never hated going there. I thought it was kind of nice to walk into an air conditioned place on a 94 degree day in Tampa, where it was kind of, it wasn’t Tampa st, Pete. They get that square because everybody there knows the difference. They will tell you too. Oh, they will tell you too. But, like, I never saw that. I mean, and I feel that way, about like the Oakland Coliseum, even when there’s rats there, my wife and I drink a tequila in the upper deck there, which is more like a lower deck, because they didn’t have five levels of sky, sweets and whatnot. So, I mean, I had charm for all of those places. And I’m a guy that went to the old Comiskey Park, the old Tiger Stadium Memorial, like I’m an old soul in lots of ways about going to Candlestick Park with my buddies back in the 80s, to see the wind wrappers blow around and see my buddy Mark Miller freeze his ass off. By the way, call him if you’re in an accident. Blonde Dale Miller, Schuler, they’re available for you in Essex. They’re damn good lawyers. That’s how far back we go. But like, I’ve been investigating ballparks and experiences. I did 30 ballparks in 30 days. You can look it up after my wife had cancer back in 2015 and I just watched that on television, and I think, No way I’ve been to two games there. I dropped you off on the curb twice, you know, for the all star game. I thought Louie was coming in, and he didn’t make it at that point, because they were honoring all the Latin players at that all star game. So I was a little jelly, jelly, jelly, and I was down in not really I was in Key Largo, watching that from Jimmy Johnson’s bar in Marathon. So I drove down to the keys and I drove back and got you into the 12th inning, or whatever it was at this that the CVS across the street there, one o’clock in the morning. And I’m like, you have a good time? You’re like, yeah, had a good time. You know, it’s all star game. You’re like, but it wasn’t like, hey, I want to go back when the Phillies are in town, and there’s, you know, 7000 Phillies fans in there, and 2800 like, I just it the World Baseball Classic. They played a big, big game there. And, you know, I wanted to go as Venezuela and Dominican. I watched that game at the airport bar in Panama City, Panama. I literally landed in Panama. Was watching the eighth inning of the game, and it was like a blowout, but like that was a game. Was 300 bucks to get in to that game. And it mattered. It was World Baseball. But I just I watched the Orioles go down there, and I think for the sport and for our stadium and whatever it’s going to look like with Nelly this weekend. And by the way, you want to tell everybody about your big weekend, that Uncle Nestor is taking the Jones family that you’re needed like we should talk. We’re going to talk about the team. But I think it’s even more experiential that the Yankees are coming here next week after kicking our ass. Who’s going to the game? Who’s going to see Nelly this weekend? I don’t know if you heard or not, but maybe I should get my bandana out here. They got a bobble head on Friday night too.

Luke Jones  09:52

Rock bobble head. So,

Nestor Aparicio  09:53

I mean, they’re, you know, Katie’s rolling out the the red carpet for your niece with Nelly. I don’t you’re not saying. And for Nelly, are you Saturday night? I mean, you’re, you’re taking your family to the game, and literally, I’m looking forward. You better take pictures and video. You better get her cotton candy. You better do it, right?

Luke Jones  10:10

Oh, yeah, my sister will take plenty of pictures, because, you know, she and my brother in law are coming with us. But, yeah, taking Scarlett to her first ever Orioles game. She’s been to some minor league games. She She actually went to a flyers game not long ago that What brother, my brother in law and his dad took her to out in Philly. So she had she

Nestor Aparicio  10:27

seen gritty?

Luke Jones  10:28

Yeah, oh yeah,

Nestor Aparicio  10:30

wow. I didn’t

Nestor Aparicio  10:32

know

Luke Jones  10:32

this. So that was, I’ll have to, I’ll have to show this to you. My sister was watching the game on TV. It was on NBC Sports Philly, and they get that in new freedom. You know, where they live, 10 minutes from my house, but you could actually they sat right behind the net in like, the fourth row, or something like that. And you could actually see the three of them on TV at one point time. Now you had to, like, look for them actively. It wasn’t a close up, but you could see them. I’m like, Oh, that’s pretty darn cool. So, but yeah, we’re taking her. And I’ve been, you know, Uncle Luke’s been alluding to a surprise for the last week or two. All I’ve told her is that she gets to ride in my car, and she thinks that’s the coolest thing ever for some for some reason. I mean, there’s nothing special about my car. Other does have a sunroof, and she likes that. I think that’s what it really is. And every time, I

Nestor Aparicio  11:21

hope you get sunshine and a good weather Saturday, right?

Luke Jones  11:24

Yeah. I mean, I hope the I hope the ball club plays well, but

Nestor Aparicio  11:28

yeah. I mean, you know what we need to do is next week at faveleys, I’m doing the Maryland crab cake tour. Come on down like I think Wednesday, unless they’re on dead alert, Red Alert, playing that last game against the Yankees, unless the Ravens have big news, and we don’t know when the schedule I thought the schedule’s coming next Wednesday. Now that’s on the

Luke Jones  11:47

fire.

Nestor Aparicio  11:47

Like, we don’t know, right? But, like, I really want to hear a full recap. Like, when’s the last time you went to an Oreo game with a ticket to get in?

Luke Jones  11:59

I’m almost and, like, with a

Nestor Aparicio  12:01

buddy and having a beer, or having a dog, or going with me,

Luke Jones  12:04

really, with a buddy,

Nestor Aparicio  12:06

years,

Luke Jones  12:07

it’s probably been, it’s been over 10 years.

Nestor Aparicio  12:10

How often do you leave the press box, like I made you let two weeks ago, and come down and meet people, like, where friends are at the ballpark, and you get the visit with them?

Luke Jones  12:19

Unless I’m really busy, I will, I’ll try not to turn down a friend who says, Hey, I’m here come say hi. Or

Nestor Aparicio  12:27

how often does that happen? I’m asking

Luke Jones  12:29

that opens up at least a handful of times.

Nestor Aparicio  12:31

I mean, that’s the beauty for me when I go to the ballpark. Is running into friends,

Luke Jones  12:35

yeah. I mean,

Nestor Aparicio  12:35

like, you know, like that. That

Luke Jones  12:37

was my best friend, and he brings his wife and two kids to, you know, I probably see him at least four or five times a year where I’ll come and sit with them for an inning or two, you know, like, it’s not,

Nestor Aparicio  12:50

I wish they were better to me. I mean, on a real like, you know, flat out level, because it would be a lot more fun to go down there and try to be a part of building it back, especially now that it’s literally been burned to the ground twice, once by angelos, now by these folks, and it’s at rock bottom right as we speak. And we’ll talk about the baseball team one of the couple games in Miami, but they’re going to come home here in a weird position with Tupac bobbleheads and Nelly things. And Luke’s taking the niece, and whether she should be a Phillies fan or not, your brother in law probably have a quite a say in that, or a beef in that. And maybe the Philly fanatic with the nose coming out, which pretty much got me involved with Pete Rose when I was 13, and Joe Morgan, and you know, Steve Carlton and Schmitter the schmidter, and you know, Gary Matthews and Sarge, and like all that good stuff that I enjoyed as a kid, because I love the Phillies. I still have my Richie Ashburn daddy, who had, I think it’s worth like, 85 bucks on ebay these days that I got a manny trio and Bob Boone, just like, you know, I loved all of that, but I love the delineation of the American and National League, and I loved baseball. I hope Scarlett falls for baseball more than like, soccer or lacrosse or something like that. So the team itself, and the experience of going to the ballpark this weekend. You’ll have that. I’ll have that the Yankees fans will all be in, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Zach Rogers coming back. How Povich is going to pitch, how Brandon young pitched. I mean, as this thing unfolds, if they are ever to get five games over 500 which is when the bell’s gonna ring for me to say they’re alive again. They’re a long way away from that. But signs of life are just winning some games on the road in this awful somnambulant atmosphere of Miami, where, I mean, it doesn’t feel like major league baseball on television, and I know it can’t when you’re there, either probably feels more like covid ball or something. You know,

Luke Jones  14:42

it’s definitely strange. But to your point, I mean, the Orioles are in a position right now where they just need to win games, and when you’re in an atmosphere like that, I mean, it’s you’ve got to bring your own energy, and that’s why it was big for them to score first on Tuesday night, and they did that again on Wednesday night, with Pete Alonso hitting the three run homer. I mean. Talked about it, Pete Alonso’s looking more and more like Pete Alonso. Can’t say the same for gunner Henderson at the moment, but you had a lineup that scored, scored runs, hit the ball. I thought the defense looked, you know, for one night, right? It’s one night. I thought the defense looked pretty good. I mean, Dylan beaver’s made a real nice catch running the ball down in the right center gap. So good to see they need to win some games. We talked about it last year. It was not as though they played like a woeful baseball team for six months. They got off to a bad start in April, and then May was an absolute disaster, right? We’re a year ago at this at this time was when they completely fell down the mountain, and you looked up and they’re 15 or 16 games under 500 and you say, it’s over, right? It’s over. I mean, there’s no boring a historic turnaround. There’s no coming back from that. So the fact that they’ve won a couple games here, I’m with you. I’m not going to sit here and say they’re back season on. All the optimism is back, but it does look like, Hey, you’re getting off the mat here. You’re winning in an environment like you said. It’s so sterile, it’s quiet, it’s depressing. It would have been really easy to go there and continue to feel sorry for yourself if you wanted to, right? So they haven’t done that. They’ve at the very least won a series. You want to keep winning. You want to finish off this series on a high note. You want to come home and and play some good baseball against the A’s, and then while everyone else will brace for the Yankees to come into town at that point, you say, Hey, this is our chance now to to get a little bit of revenge here,

Nestor Aparicio  16:41

it gets in your head, if nothing else. I mean Monday nights in your head, no matter what, because you don’t want to lose the first one. And Rogers might be pitching that, you know, I pitching Monday. I’m sure

Luke Jones  16:51

he’s eligible. Then he threw a bullpen. He’s, you know, I wouldn’t have, I don’t know what would really delay it, other than if he, if you feel like he needs an extra day or an extra bullpen, but shouldn’t be something. I mean, he hasn’t been out that long. So, so

Nestor Aparicio  17:06

hey, I was gonna ask you, can we have a little fun here, since we’re talking about the game, game two, whatever, and there’ll be another game,

Luke Jones  17:12

this is always fun. It’s baseball. Would

Nestor Aparicio  17:13

you make that deal over again? I was just wondering, like when I saw Stowers with his friends and, you know, Brandon young and guys, he kind of grew up playing ball with. I thought to myself, literally, I thought about this last night, I was going down for another bowl of my wife’s chicken Cochise Tory. And I thought, I’m going to ask Luke on the air about this, because I was going to ask the gods about it out on the internet. But I was more interested in where they were having dinner. And I thought, Hmm, not a bad trade. And for Elias to say, I wouldn’t undo that. I wouldn’t like to have the outfielder in the second baseman back at this point. I don’t know I’m only throwing it out, is to say, it’s at least a hell of a debate. I wouldn’t yell up and down one way or another. You may yell and say, the picture is more important that dude started opening day. And I’m like, well, they ain’t one ish, so I, you know, I don’t know that any of it really matters when you don’t win.

Luke Jones  18:08

Well, I think the key factor, and this goes back to why I didn’t love the Grayson Rodriguez for Taylor Ward trade. Kyle Stowers has four, four years of club control. He’s not a free agent until after 2029 Connor Norby? We’ll see. I mean, he’s off to a decent start this year. I haven’t seen anything in him that makes you feel like he’s going to be an above average starting major league player. But

Nestor Aparicio  18:32

you

Nestor Aparicio  18:32

trade him for Blaze Alexander right now?

Luke Jones  18:37

I mean, right? Full disclosure, I haven’t watched enough of Connor Norby in the mate at the major league level since they traded him to really,

Nestor Aparicio  18:45

we have such an inflated sense of first and second round picks around here, and have in all my 35 years on the radio, I mean,

Luke Jones  18:52

but I think it’s tough. It’s it would be tough to say you wouldn’t undo it, because Trevor Rogers is going to be a free agent after this year hasn’t gotten off to a great start, and

Nestor Aparicio  19:02

you’d have showers playing

Luke Jones  19:03

the hours for three more years, and you see the disaster that their outfield is overall right now.

Nestor Aparicio  19:08

You’d find the perspective in this. That’s why

Speaker 1  19:10

that

Luke Jones  19:10

said, that said this deal has aged better than it looked a year ago at this time, a year ago at this time, it looked like it was, you know, not, not quite as extreme as Curt Schilling, Steve Finley, Pete Harnish, for Glenn Davis to bring

Nestor Aparicio  19:26

up trying to get an all star left handed pitcher that might start opening day One day, for a second baseman we can’t use, and an outfielder that can’t get on the feet, they can’t break into our top six at the time, right or seven at the time, if you’re going back to Mullins and the other guy, you know, the other guys that they had around your Santander was even here. So like, I listen, I’m I’m of the mindset of judging the O’Neill’s and the wards in regard and the beavers in regard to what you have. And I wouldn’t undo it one way or another. Or to say if I’m Elias, and even in three games under 500 or five games under 500 or six games under 500 which they could be by the time next Wednesday night rolls around, if they don’t play right against the Yankees, no matter what they do against the A’s this weekend. And I hope they hold their water here, at least they’re playing 500 or four and two through this little stretch against these lousy teams that if you’re a liar, she’ll like, Dude, I got a horse taking the ball every fifth day. We’re trying to win a World Series right now, because my ass is probably getting fired at the end of the year by these neophyte owners anyway, because they don’t know what they’re doing. And the perception is I don’t know what I’m doing, because I read Nestor column the other day,

Luke Jones  20:38

yeah. I mean, like I said, Would I undo it? Probably

Nestor Aparicio  20:41

no, just because I I’m using

Luke Jones  20:43

revisionist history. I mean, hindsight is 2020,

Nestor Aparicio  20:47

Kyle

Nestor Aparicio  20:47

Stowers turned into an is instead of a might be.

Luke Jones  20:49

Now, that said, I’ll also point out Kyle Stowers has had some injuries here going back to the end of last year, and given that and how little faith I have in their strength and conditioning and training staff. And I don’t mean that to single out an individual, I just kind of wonder about the collective there, but that’s where I look at it, and say, Okay, how would he be doing? And I would also say Kyle Stowers is not off to a good start this year. I mean, if you look at his numbers, he’s really scuffling. I mean, he is still doesn’t have a home run in 58 at bats. I mean, he

Nestor Aparicio  21:19

would you trade him for Colton cowser. Right now.

Luke Jones  21:22

Trade Stowers for Colt, right?

Nestor Aparicio  21:25

I mean,

Nestor Aparicio  21:25

that absolutely takes right wherever Stowers is, slump is we take that right now?

Luke Jones  21:29

Sure, yeah. I mean, Colton cows are right now. The only thing he’s offering you is defense.

Nestor Aparicio  21:34

He

Nestor Aparicio  21:34

was three rungs ahead of Stowers on the on the totem Pub is a time they got rid of Stowers. And

Luke Jones  21:39

in fairness, he was on his way to being runner up for rookie of the year at the time. Now what’s what’s interesting, and I don’t know if I brought this up to you on air, but I know I wrote about it at Baltimore positive.com when I was kind of writing my shake up column at the beginning of the week.

Nestor Aparicio  21:54

Shake and bank, baby. Shake and

Luke Jones  21:55

Bake. One thing that I pointed out was it’s interesting that the Yankees recently optioned. Luis heal, who won Rookie of the Year that year over cowser, he’s back in the minors. He got off to a bad start, and he’s in the miners now. Granted, the Yankees have so much starting pitching that, hey, if you’re not going to perform, yeah, they’re going to send you to triple A.

Nestor Aparicio  22:13

Luke, Have I ever told you about Joe Charbonneau and Mark fitridge?

Nestor Aparicio  22:17

You

Nestor Aparicio  22:18

know? I mean, I’ve ever told you about Craig Worthington, you know, like, you know, this year and next year are different years. That’s all I’m going to say. You know,

Nestor Aparicio  22:28

right?

Luke Jones  22:28

No doubt. I mean, we can all, I mean, whether we’re talking about for the Orioles or any number of other teams, we can all remember a rookie of the year that you thought was going to be a superstar, and then he’s out of baseball three years later. You know what I mean? Like, it’s like, there’s nothing that’s guaranteed, but, but to bring it back to your original question, yeah, I’d take Kyle Stowers for three more years after this season, compared to just this year of Trevor Rogers. Now, if the Orioles extend Trevor Rogers, which I’m not, I don’t know if I even would. Quite frankly, I gotta, I need to see what he pitches like the rest of the year before I’m even strongly entertaining that. I don’t think he’s taking an extension at this point, but you know right now, but at the same time, it’s worked out better than it looked like it was going to a year ago. A year ago, it looked like an utter disaster.

Nestor Aparicio  23:17

If you think the Orioles are a contender or a playoff hopeful at this point, if you guys for sure, then then you would not want to undo the deal. You’d be happy, happy, you dude. Dude, let’s say this. Let’s move into a transition. You’re on the a’s and the Yankees. He’s the only freaking hope they have right now. They better hope he gets better, because if what they are going to do is is pitch Povich and young and and bring up Trey Gibson because Ben McDonald’s floating in on the broadcast and like, if that’s what they’re gonna do, they’re not going to be a playoff team. The only way they can be a playoff team, the only way they’re going to play games around or the matter in September is if Rogers is in is and not and certainly Bradish needs, and Brad Basset and by like, all of need to be better, but Rogers needs to come back and be a part of the force in regards and maybe not 1.91 era sudden Sam McDowell, but like, you know, a guy every fifth day is gonna take the ball and give you five six innings, give you what Brandon young gave you the other night in Miami. And friend and young, 2800 friends and family.

Luke Jones  24:24

I mean, it’s taken us a little while to mention it, but I mean Brandon young awful first inning, right? I mean, he had got the first two outs on four pitches and then walk. And then you see what the floodgates open. And you’re thinking at that point, oh, man, this is going to be another one of those starts where he’s out the second or third inning and the bullpen is going to be shot, are they going to be able to hit the ball to try to play like a beer league softball kind of game? And he settled in, and he did just settle in, by luck. He pitched really well after that. That was good to see. You know? I mean, you know what I’m going to say for as much as we’ll talk about those back of the roster or back. At the rotation guys right now, I’m going to continue to say you need your guys that are supposed to be in the is category to start stepping up and being that. Right? It’s tough for me to get mad at Brandon young or Cade Povich when Trevor Rogers and Kyle Bradish and Shane Boz aren’t doing their job, right? Those are the guys you’re counting on all along,

Nestor Aparicio  25:20

or Bassett, who’s making 19 million

Luke Jones  25:22

Yeah. I mean, let’s face it, I mean, I know Bassett. He just hit 10 years of service time, and they talked to him on air about that. That’s a really for anyone who’s not, you know, anyone who hasn’t covered the sport, reaching 10 years is such a big deal because, you know, it just means more in terms of all your perks as post playing career and all those different things, but it just means a lot. Hey, you made it 10 years in the major leagues. That said Chris Bassetts, he’s been bad. I mean, he’s got to be much better for the Orioles. I mean, even if he was your number four, he needs to be better than what he’s been as your number four or your number five. So they need those guys to be bit better, just like I’ve talked a lot about the lineup. I mean, how am I to get mad at Weston Wilson or Blaise Alexander or guys like that, when Gunnar Henderson has a sub 270 on base percentage right now, when Pete Alonso, until the last until the calendar turn to May, was not looking like Pete,

Speaker 1  26:19

by the

Nestor Aparicio  26:19

way. Gunner Henderson, he looks sick, dude,

Luke Jones  26:22

he looks man. The first three

Nestor Aparicio  26:24

my dad would say, my dad would say he looks

Luke Jones  26:26

sick right now. I mean, he struck out his first three times up at the plate on on Wednesday night. And it was, what, three pitches, and then it was, I think it was four pitches, the second at bat, and then his third at bat he struck out on, I believe it was three pitches again or no is four pitches again. I mean, he struck out three times on 11 pitches in those first three at bats. I mean, he’s clearly pressing. I think the issue for him, I think he’s trying to hit more home runs. And while he had some success doing that early on, it’s just led to a lot of bad habits. They

Nestor Aparicio  27:07

train it that way. I mean, they do, but at the same

Luke Jones  27:11

at the same time, though, you look at Taylor Ward, Taylor Ward’s profile has changed as a hitter since coming to Baltimore, but he’s walking like I mean, he’s a walking machine at this point in time. He only has one home run. If, if I had told you back in February that Taylor Ward would have one home run pass Cinco de Mayo, you would say, oh, man, that that trades a disaster.

Nestor Aparicio  27:33

See, I can hear an old hitting coach saying to him, you know, if they throw you a strike, you’re going to hit a double, but, but if they throw you a strike, you’re going to put the ball in the gap or down the line. And every time they dare throw you a strike, you’re going to hit a double like and that’s where the mindset of that is. And if they’re not going to throw strikes, I’m take first base, first base or second base. You pick which one, but I’m going to get a hack in on

Nestor Aparicio  27:56

you. You

Luke Jones  27:57

know, you look but you look at him. He was always a little more swing and miss, and not that he didn’t draw walks. I want to be clear about that. I’m not saying that his approach is a 180 but at the same time, he’s got a 434, on base percentage right now. Now he’s not hitting for a whole lot of home run power. Obviously, he only has one, but he does have 13 doubles, and that’s leading the league. And it’s

Nestor Aparicio  28:20

not

Nestor Aparicio  28:21

his job, and where he’s batting in the lineup, he’s doing his job.

Luke Jones  28:24

I mean, I’m I’m sure all things being equal, he’d like to be hitting a few more home runs, but his process has been outstanding, and that’s what we’re talking about here. Look, do they want to slug Yes, but, but they’re preaching about swing decisions and getting a pitch in your zone. You know your hot zone, if you look at the heat map for a hitter, you’re trying to get a pitch in that zone that looks bright red, right where, where you’re going to do the most damage? Gunner’s not doing that right now. I mean, gunners just he’s swinging a lot. He’s hardly walking at all, and he’s striking out a ton. Do? I think that means he’s broken beyond repair. No,

Nestor Aparicio  29:01

but there is a weight of the franchise on him, especially with Alonso be I mean, it’s especially when they be on go time. You think it feels like a long time ago that you and I were harassed in the press box in Arlington. Feels like a long time ago for him, too. And, you know, and the they didn’t score any runs in the playoff games, and the stadium was half empty for the second game here two years ago, and the manager has been fired, and they have new owners, and they’ve spent some money and the pitching and the defense, and, you know, just his head hadn’t been in the game, a lot of these guys had, hadn’t been in the game, and we’ve been beating him up about the Bad News Bears part of the game, despite the couple of wins, but, man, they’re broken if they’re not getting pitching from their $19 million pitchers and their Trevor Rogers and and their Kyle bradish’s, and they’re waiting on their Brandon Young’s and their Trey Gibson’s to give them that kind of pitching that they’re going to need to be at the 92 win team that I thought they were going to be. He but, you know, Henderson, hats off to rushman. I mean, if you’re just

Luke Jones  30:04

gonna say, it’s almost like they’ve

Nestor Aparicio  30:06

switched positions, yeah, yeah,

Luke Jones  30:08

yeah. But yeah, Adley rutsman, two RBI doubles.

Nestor Aparicio  30:12

I mean, they’re in his locker every night, and he doesn’t know what to say and doesn’t have much to say and doesn’t really want to say anything, based on what I can tell. You know, he’s a very reluctant looking cat at this point about all of it, but they’re at his locker every night because he’s doing things to win games. And that’s, you know, is right,

Luke Jones  30:31

but, but I will also say I like what I’m seeing from Sam besayo. I think Dylan beavers is quietly having some good at bats, and he’s another guy that will draw some walks. I mean, that’s why I was saying to you in springtime. In spring training, looking at it big picture. And I never thought it’d be this time of year, but I thought he’s, he’s one of those candidates, to me, that looks like a guy that could be their lead off hitter at some point, because he draws walks. I mean, you look at his he’s only hitting 217, but he has a 305, on base percentage. When you see that discrepancy between batting average and on base percentage, it tells you what strong some walks. So he’s got to he’s got to be better. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying he’s a finished product. He hasn’t hit for a whole lot of power either. But of the young guys, I see progress from him, whereas, you know, with mayo right now, cows are other than his defense. I mean, you’re just not seeing much at all. I mean, I’m at a point right now where I’d like to see Blaze Alexander just play third base rather than mayo, because, you know the bat. I mean, Blaze Alexander swung a better bat anyway, but you know, at the very least, you’re going to get better defense. But you know, they’re getting these two games, it’s been good to see they’ve gotten off the mat in an environment where it would have been really easy to continue feeling sorry for yourself because it’s so sterile, because it’s so depressing in that environment down in Miami, but they’ve come out, and they’ve jumped out to an early lead twice. They’ve given it up twice, but they’ve also then responded right and and not just, not just Brandon young, but I was also pleased to see what we saw from Anthony Nunez on Wednesday night. It’s been a really rough go of it for him of late, but he came in on Wednesday night and he pitched, well, got four outs for them. That was good to see. They needed that. And you know, then Rico Garcia gets the save, right? I mean, we’ve talked about him all year. He’s been fantastic. So Nice win, and you go back to the Lou Brown thing, right? Bring it together. We won a game yesterday. We win today. That’s two in a row. We win tomorrow. That’s called a winning streak. It has happened before. So good to see them win a couple. They need to keep winning. We’ve talked about it. No one, no one is doing any cartwheels over a couple wins. But as I said at this time last year, this is when it completely unraveled, like completely unraveled. Good to see them respond after the embarrassment that they were in the Bronx to, at the very least, get a series win here. But you need to keep you know, don’t take your foot off the gas. Go get a sweep. Go win a series against, uh, I almost said Oakland. Now,

Nestor Aparicio  33:03

what do we call them? They don’t have a first name, right? Just, just the

Luke Jones  33:07

athletics, yeah, okay, it’s very, it’s all very weird because I, I’m, I’m old school in the sense that I tend to, when I write about the opposition, I tend to use the city name, you know, unless it’s that, yeah. And obviously you can’t just say New York, because you have the Yankees or the Mets. But generally speaking, I just, I default to using the city name. So when you’re talking about the A’s, it’s just, it’s very it’s all very weird with them right now. So you know, they’re not Sacramento, but they are Sacramento because that’s where they’re playing. And they played their multiple years now. So, but

Nestor Aparicio  33:38

as an aside, the only really weird sports thing that I’d be interested to do, as we talked about the Miami thing, like the band The Eagles, played at the brave stadium the other night. I have not been to that stadium. I don’t know what’s going to get me to the suburbs of Atlanta to see a Braves Phillies or a Braves Mets game, you know, at any point in my life. But like, had I seen a baseball game in Buffalo? I’ve which I’ve been to, that stadium for minor league ball. I saw Junior no boa hit for the cycle. There a little old school or for you, if you got an Old Montreal Expos card there, Junior played for everybody. He also played for the buffalo Bisons in the Indianapolis racers at that point. But, I mean, I used to go to minor league games or whatever. But, you know, like Sacramento, I have friends in Sacramento. I’ve been to Sacramento once for lunch, for coffee, you know, just to go there for the five minutes they’re going to play baseball there. That would be interesting to me. I have very few regrets in life. One of them is like, I never went to the old Arlington Stadium, the tin can. I had an opportunity. Didn’t do that. There’s a couple places I missed out on Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. Had a chance to see rush there, didn’t go stupid. So there’s a few things, but this five minutes of the A’s playing in Sacramento, I don’t know, you know, like the seeing the brace play in the minor league park down in Tampa, the Steinbrenner thing, I don’t know that didn’t feel I’ve been in there for a Yankees Red Sox game one time. Like, I don’t I. Don’t know about seeing this, but, like, is there any Sacramento Jones for you at all? No,

Luke Jones  35:06

um,

Nestor Aparicio  35:07

no.

Luke Jones  35:07

I mean, I just don’t know. What else I like? What else would I want to see while I’m in Sacramento? And I don’t, I don’t really know. Like, I’m not even saying that, no, I don’t know, right? I mean, it’s, it’s odd. I mean, I’ve, it hasn’t been that but I’ve had the opportunity. I covered the empty ballpark game in 2015 I covered covid games in 2020 where, literally there are no fans in the ballpark. All

Nestor Aparicio  35:32

right, look, dude, here’s what we’re going to do if diori, I did this last weekend and we wound up going nowhere, and I wound up going nowhere and I went to see Bruce.

Luke Jones  35:42

Well, the difference is, you’re, you’re asking me something ahead of time. Now, I mean, you kind of, in fairness, you did spring that on me. If

Nestor Aparicio  35:48

the Orioles are any good on the 25th of August, they play in St Louis, Missouri, on the 25th and 26th and the 27th afternoon game in the 27th I would think we could fly to St Louis in the 26th do the night game. In the afternoon game, get some pappy’s Barbecue. I’ll take you. I get you some TED Drew’s frozen custard. I’ll take you up. Have you ever wanted to go up into the Gateway Arch? I take you in football season. But you know the Rams ain’t there no more. So have you ever been up in the Gateway Arch.

Luke Jones  36:20

I’ve never been to St Louis, so no,

Nestor Aparicio  36:22

okay, so and then we could go from there to Sacramento and see the capital, and I could see if Gavin Newsom’s got some time for me. I know some people around him, and maybe even sneak into San Francisco get a drink with Julio. But yeah, they play in Sacramento on the 28th 29th by the way, the Ravens will be playing their third and final preseason game somewhere in and around there. You’ll make some excuse that Chad needs to have you out there for the B team cuts of the third string, whatever’s so you won’t want to do it. I

Luke Jones  36:52

was, I was just going to say that final roster cuts are Tuesday. See, I

Nestor Aparicio  36:56

knew that you were going to go through this. You’re going to find some excuse to not go to Sacramento with me, even if the Orioles are good, I’m just trying to find a freaking North Star for this franchise that think that they could play a game in Sacramento in a little stadium, a little bandbox. I got Scott labarze out there. All my friends are out there. The guy that put me on the phone with Steven Tyler and Getty Lee lives there like so come on, man, I just dream a little that they’re relevant. That’s all I try to take you to New York four days ago, they got their ass kicked 12 to one, and I can’t imagine standing out in front of that media gate waiting for you in the Bronx at 1122, after they lost 12 to one. Had you and I gone to the game the other night?

Luke Jones  37:39

All I was going to say is, you know, the wnst text alert isn’t going to text itself. But no, I just

Nestor Aparicio  37:48

think about it, St Louis and Sacramento.

Luke Jones  37:51

Sincerity. I like the idea. I I genuinely do. It is a really rough time when I’m talking. You know, if I’m being fully honest from a fall cover,

Nestor Aparicio  38:00

that’s it. I’m not taking you to Tahoe. That’s it. No Tahoe for you. No South Shore, North Shore, California side.

Luke Jones  38:09

I do. I’m not like this. Isn’t me saying I don’t want to do it, all right? It is.

Nestor Aparicio  38:14

That’s it. I’m taking you to Fenway Park, and that’s it. We’re gonna get the same

Luke Jones  38:17

ranks, the same way that, in fairness, if you ask me about spring training, yeah, I’d love to go to spring training, but I can’t do it when NFL free agency starts. I mean, like, I couldn’t have done that, as the max Crosby deal is falling apart, like my brain would break. So, you know that that’s where it’s like, I’ve got a, you know, I’ve got to compartmentalize a little bit in terms of, like, Okay, what time of the calendar? What time of the sports calendar is this? But we can talk about it. I’m not, I’m not

Nestor Aparicio  38:47

fun. All right, I’m gonna talk to your boss.

Luke Jones  38:49

I’m

Nestor Aparicio  38:49

gonna, we’re gonna have a little fun. I do

Luke Jones  38:51

enjoy my job, you know, I mean, but it’s work. It is, it is work with

Nestor Aparicio  38:56

Scarlet and your sister and your brother in law at the Orioles game. We’ll talk about as you try to attempt to make your four year old very impressionable niece an Oriole fan, that you have her have a talk with your mother first and see like, you know what I mean, your mother’s been at this longer on the Oriole side. Maybe she should do Phillies. I’m saying,

Luke Jones  39:18

I’ve already said that, but I will also point out they only play one series a year, right? And my grandfather, I’ve talked about this on the air. My grandfather was born in 1923 I mean, other than the International League Orioles, there was no major league team in

Nestor Aparicio  39:37

I’m gonna write a letter to Katie Griggs next week and ask her why your niece should be an Orioles fan?

Luke Jones  39:42

Oh, I mean,

Nestor Aparicio  39:42

and see what she would say, but you

Luke Jones  39:45

know what I would also say about that? But you know what I would also say about that? Unless you’re a die hard sports fan, why are we the fans of any team? It’s because our dad was because

Nestor Aparicio  39:54

her mom, dad and her mom loves me, so does her uncle. He’s in the business,

Luke Jones  39:57

but that’s my point. She’s gonna like both. Now, for her sake, I would hope she’s more emotionally invested, probably in the Phillies, considering it’s a bigger market, and

Nestor Aparicio  40:07

she’s out with Uncle Luke, having a having a ginger ale or Shirley Temple, as you should take her, get her Shirley Temple at Pizza John, send the bill to me

Luke Jones  40:16

and all that. I mean,

Nestor Aparicio  40:17

yeah, I wanted to be an Oriole fan, but I

Luke Jones  40:19

Yeah, but, but that said she can be both. I mean, I all right, I’m with you. I mean, I I can remember the soundtrack of my childhood was being at my grandparents house. You know, it’s my home now. But Sunday afternoon, we had the Orioles were either on W Mar because they did not have cable, but they were on channel two, and the Phillies would be on the radio, or the Phillies would be on television and the Orioles would be on the radio. That was, that was the soundtrack. You know, we’d have a we’d have Sunday afternoon lunch or supper at my grandparents house, and we’d be following the Orioles and the Phillies. I mean, it was that simple. And so she can, she can root for both. But if I’m being objective about it, as far as which one, I would tell her to have a little more hope in, even though the Phillies are, you know, playing better, but certainly not in a great position, as they just fire their manager, I would probably say, you know, if you want to die a little harder with with the Phillies, I could certainly understand that, but it’s

Nestor Aparicio  41:21

gonna be fun. I’ll tell people show and tell, man, here’s my Phillies belt from 1971 my childhood belt. And this was the team when I was scar scroll. It’s four, right?

Luke Jones  41:31

She’ll be five in a couple weeks, all right, literally, two weeks away from her birthday.

Nestor Aparicio  41:35

I can honestly say this to you in 1972 three and four, the years of my fourth, fifth and sixth years of my life. When any psychiatrist, psychologist that’s going to ever examine me over Shepard Pratt, when they take a look at me, when it’s all over, what they’re going to say I was greatly, greatly affected by my hatred of the Oakland Athletics and your niece is going, and this is like a kid’s belt. This would actually fit her, probably. It’s a little belt. And my dad took me out on that walk past the Alameda 33rd Street by Montebello, where they let us off there, and right near Koco’s around the corner. And we walk up, and there was a guy in a church lot that would set up on the stoop and sell helmets. And my dad collected the helmets for me, Astro Cincinnati padres. Every time I went out get a brewers. I had had plastic helmets in my garage. I collected them as a boy. I don’t think I’ve ever told you this story. I had them for the longest time. You could find them on the internet for 2030, bucks, if I wanted to recollect them. Wanted to recollect them the 1971 Ralph gar but my dad bought them because he thought they were kind of cool and fun. And I got to wear them when I played wiffle ball in the backyard. And I got to pretend that I was Joe Morgan in 1974 75 Big Red Machine. He even got me Red Sox when I could be Fred Lynn, or I could be Jim rice, or, you know, you like all of that could be Dewey Evans, I could do it all, but I would let your niece wear my Oriole belt buckle from 1971 if this would help things, and I could keep her away from sort of, you know, I would maybe call this the Larry boa sort of era, man, what Carlton was involved Schmidt or was involved too. But like, she’s gonna have to, she have to decide, make a decision. She’s four, tell her, this is a time for her to decide.

Luke Jones  43:30

I didn’t. It’s funny, because I’m just now realizing this. I knew this, but I had, hadn’t dawned on me. Bad,

Nestor Aparicio  43:35

bad, Scarlet, good, good, bad,

Luke Jones  43:38

good. Here’s the thing, she’s going to get a direct comp here. The A’s are in Philadelphia right now, and the Phillies have taken the first two games of that series, so they’ve already won a series. So it’s very

Nestor Aparicio  43:50

softening them up for us, is what they’re doing.

Luke Jones  43:52

But from her perspective, it’s gonna be like, well, the Phillies beat the A’s, if the Orioles don’t beat the A’s, it’s kind of an easy choice, right? I mean, if we’re gonna break it down to something so simplistic, so but now it’s gonna be fun. I’m looking forward to it. You know, hopefully there’ll be at least a couple good stories about it. I mean, it’s funny, my sister

Nestor Aparicio  44:09

make sure she doesn’t miss the mustard races and the crab races. They brought it up before that.

Luke Jones  44:13

She was like, Is there a way to get the Oriole bird to come by? I said, you remember, your daughter’s terrified of mascots, right? She doesn’t like Matt. She gets, she gets a little scared. So we’ll probably

Nestor Aparicio  44:24

this guy,

Luke Jones  44:26

yeah, oh yeah. It’s a thing at Hershey. She they have, they’ve gotten a season pass to Hershey party.

Nestor Aparicio  44:32

She didn’t like gritty. She doesn’t like

Luke Jones  44:33

the characters. Now,

Nestor Aparicio  44:34

okay,

Luke Jones  44:35

so

Nestor Aparicio  44:35

I don’t like gritty either. Tell her that. But, yeah,

Luke Jones  44:37

that’s a little bit of a sticking point, but I’m hoping, because I’ve, yeah, I’ve got a one of the, one of the gifts she’s getting is pertaining to the Oriole bird. Well,

Nestor Aparicio  44:46

if we got a belt that this will fit on, she can wear my belt to the game on Saturday. If that, you know, if that makes the magic happen, something magic happens. Luke’s going to the ballpark Saturday. We’re going to be fadley’s on Wednesday. Hopefully it’s not, as I said, A. You know, last rights for the Orioles in the back end of the Yankee series. We’ll be doing it all on behalf of the Maryland lottery. Wild horses, I’ll give away, or the boardwalk, which is my favorite, the Bay Bridge, which I will be using to get to said boardwalk, as well as to said black watery Osprey. Mollusks, by the way, they have a new Miss Pac Man scratch off to give away. I’m looking forward to giving those away in June. Our friends at GBMC, we did a segment on walk a mile in their shoes. Danny came on, talked about its importance. You’ll be hearing that and seeing that out of Baltimore positive as well. And Zach Dermer for farming, and der faring in and Dermer will be joining manually messed that up once a week. Will be joining us at Planet Fitness, Luke, I got the funny hat. Let me get it out here and pack it on up for what we’re gonna do here. This is my New York hat. Bam. I should have worn this last Monday when it says times square right on it. I’ll be wearing this in the segment over at Planet Fitness. Mark Viviano will be coming by Planet Fitness to class to join up a little bit speaking of St Louis, dude, come on. Now, come on, we give you all sorts of St Louis ideas. By the way, Leonard Raskin son was just accepted as a PhD in St Louis, so he’s going to be spending more time in St Louis. So maybe, dude, from my lips to your Creator’s ears that if the Orioles are actually independent race in St Louis on August 25 or 26th you and I are gonna have to fight about who’s doing the injury report. That’s all I’m saying. We’re Baltimore positive back for more. I’ve laid down the gauntlet for Sacramento. I’m coming for you cousins, Sacramento ace, oh boy, you.
