Nestor Aparicio 00:01
Welcome home. We are W, N, S, T, am 1570 tacit, Baltimore. We are Baltimore, positive, positively now in April, and I’m not fooling but I might be, who knows? I’m not much for the I’m not much of a jokester on on April Fool’s Day. But it’s been a little while. It feels like it feels like it was like it was almost February the last time I got together this guy, we’re going to be doing the Maryland crab cake tour at faintly’s Next Friday in Lexington market. I thought we’d be getting to the fishmonger’s daughter. We’ll get there a little later on in the month, probably in May. We’re also with Koco’s later on in the month, on the 23rd it’s all brought to you by the Maryland lottery, in conjunction with our friends at GBMC and Farnan and Dermer, the comfort guys, and they certainly provided my wife a level of comfort when we had a flood in our basement this morning. So John Martin joins us now. It has been, you know, you and I have been at this like, five years now, doing, you know, crab cake tours and all that. I don’t know that we’ve been apart for this period of time here. It’s been, like about a month since you and I have gotten together. We’ve launched the Maryland treasures. I don’t have the tickets. I’m getting them from Roz early in the week. I will have them next week at Fay Lee’s. But new things and run riches, we’re not hitting enough runs. It’s not costing John Martin enough money, but plenty of things going on with the lottery. How you been happy?
John Martin 01:15
Just a couple words of advice. There a flood in the basement is much better than a flood in the second floor bathroom.
Nestor Aparicio 01:23
I’ll take your advice on that. I don’t think you’re wrong, because when you see the water coming down, that’s never good. That’s not what you want. No, that’s never good.
John Martin 01:31
That’s never good. So that’s number one. Number two, yeah, the lack of hitting is not unique to the O’s. That’s kind of that happens a lot in Major League Baseball, and pitching beats good
Nestor Aparicio 01:45
hitting, you know, that or vice versa?
John Martin 01:46
Is that what Yogi said?
Nestor Aparicio 01:48
I don’t know. But I mean, the home run richest thing they you know, I need more home runs. I saw Tyler O’Neill get get one swiped from him down in the left field corner that would have been out of 26 of 30 ballparks and all that stuff. And I’m thinking, Well, yeah, it’s more money for John, more money for the state. You know, we I think we have runs.
John Martin 02:07
We have two or three now, Gunner hit one. That’s not enough. That’s not enough. Well, you know, you got to ease into the season. This is only the first week this season. All right?
Nestor Aparicio 02:14
Well, we got a lot of boppers. We got a lot of 30 home run potential, and we have home run riches. So let’s start with home run rich. It’s because, let’s do that. We do have people. I’m hearing names, men, women. Kevin Brown reads them and they say, You’re the you’re today’s contestant. And my buddy, cheese steak, Dave, was one of the contestants last year. There’s nothing more exciting than you know, every time you come up to the bat to have a chance to win some Dell that is, that is
John Martin 02:38
exactly the whole premise of it. We’ve been doing this for several years now, and our Trish, and our traditional route is you enter your your home run, riches, walk off winnings, fast play ticket into your My lottery rewards account, and if you’re one of the lucky fans selected for one of the 162 games, you win $500 and for every home run the Oh said during your game, it’s another $500 should it be a Grand Slam that’s $5,000 and new this year, we have a special VIP experience once a month. This month, it’ll be April 29 when a lucky winner will have a chance to be our guests in the truest club.
Nestor Aparicio 03:16
I hope they eat a lot and drink them. I have not been there. I did not get that invitation, but I’ve seen all the videos on opening day. It’s where the press box was. Most stadia have these. I’ve been in the Los Angeles Dodgers version of such a thing. I’ve seen the Yankees version of such a thing. It’s nice to be king. It’s good to be king, as they once said, right?
John Martin 03:37
And our and our lucky winner for April 29 who the Houston Astros in town? I know one of your favorite teams. So hold on.
Nestor Aparicio 03:47
The person that’s in the suite is also the contestant Correct.
John Martin 03:52
That is one of the same, yes, yes.
Nestor Aparicio 03:54
So on that particular night, they will be able to yell and scream at the ballpark. Now that that is new, correct? They will be at the ballpark for their game. Yes, that is the new part. All right, so that is a heck of a wrinkle, I must say. Now the more I’m thinking about this, it is, do we have our winner on the 29th do we know who this
John Martin 04:13
person is? It is, it is. I’ve not met her yet. It’s Miss Angela Ruffin of hey, where in the world is colesville, Maryland. I think colesville’s
Nestor Aparicio 04:22
Somewhere near DC, because I think I’ve seen it on 29 or 301, or something like that.
John Martin 04:27
Where is it close enough? You’re close enough? Yeah, yeah. It’s between the the ICC and 495, so
Nestor Aparicio 04:33
it’s on the montgomery county side. Maybe, maybe it might be Prince George’s County. I don’t know. I always think in 95 is being sort of delineator, but it’s not yes, it’s spring. They know,
John Martin 04:43
right, right? Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. So yeah, Angela will be the VIP contestant of the game. And we’re trying something new this year. We’re actually going to have a mike from the lottery, our man, Mike, who does our, our fun stuff. Like the big spin. We’ll talk about that in a minute. We’ll be there with her, and we’ll be recording every pitch, so hopefully, when that luxurious home run happens or grand slam, we’ll get it real time.
Nestor Aparicio 05:12
Tell me who’s pitching for the Astros. That’s what I need to know, because I need, I need a Pete Alonso bomb. I need to, I need a gun around that we’ll find out. Well, the efflin injuries also got me a little bit. But, you know, we don’t, we don’t get into pitching with home run riches, except the other teams pitchers. John Martin is here. He’s executive director of all things Maryland, lottery gaming. Listen, I didn’t, I kept forgetting the name of the Maryland treasures. It’s, it hasn’t rolled off my tongue yet. It’s a new promotion. You had a really big shebang up in the Timonium when you announced these. I’ve now seen them. The motif I didn’t get was the Ocean City Boardwalk motif. That was the one that was sort of missing in my Yes, I knew there’d be horses, I knew there’d be birds, I knew there’d be a bridge. But the one I missed was Ocean City. And I don’t know, maybe this wasn’t thinking about Ocean City in March, but now that it’s April and 80 out, I’m thinking about Ocean City. You know, for
John Martin 06:07
people who don’t know what the heck we’re talking about, we put out there an invitation for aspiring artists to kind of just share with us their thoughts of what Maryland means to them. What are some of the treasures around the great state of Maryland? And we had hundreds of responses from dozens of artists.
Nestor Aparicio 06:29
My wife is an artist, and she was like tinkering around with an idea, literally her sister because, because it’s fun for people to love art, it’s fun for them. And this,
John Martin 06:38
we could not be more proud of the four artists that were chosen and their artwork, and go to MD lottery.com and click on the Maryland treasures page and see samples of their work. And more importantly, you can actually see them in retail. They became scratch off tickets for us at the $2 price point, some very, very fun and exciting work. And then we went step further again, did little profile on the artist. You can see little interviews and learn more about who these people are behind the artwork. And great stories, great human interest stories too. So lots of fun. And hopefully people will enjoy the ticket. They’ll enjoy the artwork, and it’s probably something we’ll put in the file and do it again at some point. I think it’s been a great success. And we we look forward to getting the player feedback and be interested in what you think when you have those tickets in your hand and you’re doing your Maryland crab cake
Nestor Aparicio 07:33
tour, should I ask you, is that a heron, a, H, E, R O N, not a herring, like a red herring, but a heron? I think that bird, I believe it is okay. Yeah, I’m just looking. And then we have a horse and a foal, and then we have bridges. It looks like the Bay Bridge, not necessarily the Key Bridge, but looks more two strand Bay Bridge. And we, we don’t have a Key Bridge anymore. I don’t want to get into that. But then the other thing is the boardwalk. And I’m thinking, Maryland treasures, and I’m the boardwalk is a treasure. They don’t have one in Ohio. They don’t have one in West Virginia, right? I mean, it’s a boardwalk, right? It is.
John Martin 08:08
It is unique as a part of Maryland that is unique. So, yes, yeah, fun, fun art. And again, haven’t seen it. Go to MD lottery.com go to your Lottery retailer. Say, Hey, one of those, or two, or all four of those Maryland treasures tickets.
Nestor Aparicio 08:23
You know, you and I get together along with Seth Elkin every single year, and we do a segment in Ocean City during Mako in August. So we it is a treasure Ocean City, Maryland. That’s good.
John Martin 08:33
If you look real close, I think you see Seth on the Ferris wheel in that picture.
Nestor Aparicio 08:37
You have to look real close. Is he wearing a Clemente jersey or Paul Skeens jersey? I should be very nice this week with you playing the pirates. I i You will bail out on me if they sweep tutorials this weekend, and I’m going to be stuck with Elkin
Speaker 1 08:51
next week. I am so gone. I’ve got one foot out the door.
Nestor Aparicio 08:54
Oh yeah, John Martin is here. He’s the Executive Director of all things Maryland, lottery and gaming, also fresh things going on this spring. I want to give you lots you lots you just talk about because we’ve had a lot of big winners as well, and just a lot to catch up on you and me. You know,
John Martin 09:06
one of the things we’d like to do is, is when something works for us, like the Maryland treasuries, we like to come back and do it again. So we’re doing big spin two. You hopefully remember fondly big spin one, players buy a $5 scratch off ticket, and if they’re fortunate enough to win, obviously, cash prizes, up to $50,000 on the scratch off ticket, but you might win a little funky sign on your ticket that says, hey, there’s a spin symbol. So you go to your retailer and you actually spin a virtual wheel at retail to see if you’ve won 10 to $250 or you may win again, a thing called a big spin. And if you do that big spin, you come into Maryland lottery, intergalactic headquarters here, just south of Baltimore, and you get a chance to spin one of those big wheels. Would this
Nestor Aparicio 09:59
be the pub bar? For wheel, like the Showcase Showdown wheel, it would be, it would be one always wanted to do that
John Martin 10:07
you can’t. It’s, it’s for players only. You have to go to MD lottery.md.
Nestor Aparicio 10:12
Lottery.com, doesn’t everyone wonder how heavy it is, though, really. I mean, you would, you know, you wonder, because sometimes a little people, they a little old lady, it’s a big wheel. Spin it, right? I mean,
John Martin 10:22
okay, it’s a big wheel, and it keeps on turning. Why I’m crossing
Nestor Aparicio 10:27
things off my bucket list? I’m thinking that that would be kind of a cool thing to do. So they come into this to to Montgomery Park and Southwest Baltimore, and by the time they get there, they’ve got big bucks, though, right? By the time they’ve been
John Martin 10:39
winning between 50 and $250,000 it’s worth the trip, and you might want to bring a friend.
Nestor Aparicio 10:47
Wow. So the other spin part of this, when you get the little spin symbol, you’ve won something. Is it? Yes, correct? One between 10 and $250
John Martin 10:56
you go to retail, and the retailer will scan your ticket and you’ll get a chance to see it spin there in the store. But you may have a big spin symbol, which says you are one of eight lucky tickets. How about the golden ticket? We’ve talked about that off and on, eight lucky big spin tickets distributed throughout the state of Maryland. And come on in. Actually, we’re going to have a couple lucky people already coming in this week. So we’ll have some news next week about what they won. Did they win 50 100 200 $250,000
Nestor Aparicio 11:33
I just want to know how heavy the wheel is. That’s kind of where you
John Martin 11:36
plan on walking out with it. What do you mean?
Nestor Aparicio 11:39
It’s just when you grew up on Bob Barker and, you know, and watched it, it’s two hands, and you pull down on that, you only get to do it once, too. And you’re right, there’s no second spin. No, no, no, no. Well, lucky for you, you have second chances at the Maryland lottery. A lot of folks don’t get that opportunity, right? We do.
John Martin 12:00
We do. And we also have promotions. We have a spring fling promotion, very appropriate, because this is, in fact, the spring and we are ready. We are flinging, that’s for sure. And it’s a chance for you, if you play some of your favorite draw games, like pick four racetracks, Powerball, you could have the chance to win a free fast play ticket, one of four tickets, a $1 Press Your Luck ticket, a $2 baccarat ticket, a $3 fast play Kino ticket, or a $20 casino cash ticket, all the details at MD lottery.com.
Nestor Aparicio 12:39
I’m intimidated by Baccarat. I’ve never been able to I don’t really know the rules of Baccarat, but one thing I do know the rules of Major League Baseball, and you’re a baseball fan, John Martin and you, you know I’ve discussed this ABS system. I ran into the great Paul Molitor at at the target center in Minnesota. He and I call I know him a little bit. We had a little chat, and we were talking abs. I’ve been talking ABS all week, and you don’t even know this, but I’m such a good spokesperson for the Maryland lottery as I pat myself on the back on April Fool’s Day, I have compared the ABS system to Kino, I said, because, like, when there’s a challenge on that Talmud or the pitcher or the catchers challenge it. The video then comes up on massen and the Jim Palmer and and it and the ball pops up, and it goes boop, and it’s like, either a strike or it’s a ball. You’re either right or you’re wrong. But I said it’s kind of like watching keto. That’s what I said. The Luke early on there the weekend. It’s, it’s kind of like waiting on the lucky ball if you’re getting a chance to do that. But we have Keno happening as well. The real Kino still happening, right? Yeah.
John Martin 13:46
But you know what? That’s interesting. Get me promotions online too. Will you please? Wouldn’t that be something brought to you by abs, brought to you by the friends of the Maryland lottery? That’s going to that would cost us.
Nestor Aparicio 13:58
I’m an idea man. I’m an idea man, John, that’s all I’m saying. You know, that’s what I do. But the ball’s in your court. I know you’re doing double and triple winnings right now with a sprinkler keynote, right?
John Martin 14:09
We do, and we typically try to time that with the basketball tournament, which is winding its way down. There are four teams left as we speak.
Nestor Aparicio 14:17
Duke’s not one of them.
John Martin 14:19
Yeah? How about that? Huh? We still anything happened on the way to Final Four? Yeah, although, you know what, Hurley makes it tough for me to root for UConn. He’s, he’s jumped the shark. Is his
Nestor Aparicio 14:30
mom spicy too, from what I saw, really the internet piece, yeah. She, she, yeah, yeah. She got a Jersey, Jersey tongue, you know what I mean. So, yeah, yeah. You’d be proud to be your mom, probably, but I’ve never rooted for Hurley’s. No, I’m out on the Hurley business. If it was related to Duke, I don’t eat even wo Joe. We got rid of him out of Cardinal Gibbons. I mean, we very rare that we had Maryland people going to Duke and messing but our our
John Martin 14:57
keynote promotion will end with the end of the. Tournament, but so get in on the last few days of that. But yeah, we have promotions all the time, again, all the details at MD lottery.com whether they’re they’re Second Chance promotions, or buy this, get that promotions, or just a general voice, have fun. But whatever you do, please play responsibly.
Nestor Aparicio 15:17
All right, I always give you a chance to talk about winners and stuff like that, but, and it’s nice, somebody wins 50 grand, and they come, they take a picture, and they come down and they put on boas and have fun down in your office and all that. But getting a million dollars in scratch offs, like, that’s a big deal, and we talk about that whenever it happens, but you’re giving money away every day. There’s something exciting happening at the lottery.
John Martin 15:37
You know, it’s we have the winter stories on our website at MD lottery.com, but, yeah, a million bucks or things close to it still gets a different level of response. I mean, no one’s going to walk away from $50,000 but when you start to move that decimal point over, it’s a whole nother feeling that comes over one I was not involved with was, was a Prince George’s County man who won a million dollars on a 200 100 times the cash $20 scratch off ticket. And again, these are, these are typical people who know the game, understand the game, know the odds of the game. So he used to play the $30 200 times the cash ticket. But apparently they didn’t have it in stock that day at that retailer. So he went down a notch on the $20 100 times the cash version, and ended up scratching tickets. And I love when they see so many zeros. They they forget how to count. So, so, so so they they scan the ticket, and it sometimes will tell them exactly how many zeros are there. So, yeah, he was fortunate enough to win a million dollar top prize. But I did have the opportunity to talk to a another winner. Met them here when they came to claim their prize, and it happened to be at the let me find out what their game was. They were playing the fast play game. It was a progressive jackpot,
Nestor Aparicio 17:07
a bill those things can get. That’s where they passives can get a little crazy.
John Martin 17:13
They can, they can, in this case, is a $20 fast play ticket. And there’s our super 777, game. The man, as many Lauder players a fan of the number seven, so that caught his eye. Don’t know if he even looked at the progressive, but he just saw that ticket. Ended up winning $828,000 and some change on a progressive jackpot win on that $20 fast play game. And it’s, you know, interesting when you see people and you ask them, What are you going to do next? And they literally don’t know. They just don’t know what they’re going to do next, you know? They’ll say things like, Well, yeah, I’m going to pay off my car, do that little project around the house. I’m going to say, Okay, you still have $812 million left, you know? So it’s the magnitude of it, right? I mean, they just, I mean, who’s used to getting hundreds of 1000s of dollars, unless you’re a sports celebrity, but yeah, I mean, for the common folks, the people who enjoy the game, who play responsibly, they really have to catch their breath. This is a guy who’s retired. He and his wife, so hopefully they’ll get a chance to to enjoy that and share it with their family and and enjoy the fruits of their their labors through the years, and retire with a little more comfort.
Nestor Aparicio 18:33
I tell you all the time. You know, I had the Harlem Globetrotters, and I was giving those out last month. It cost us, and it had three or four winners in the same five minutes in the bar, because you know how cost this is over. Dundalk, and it got raucous, and I said, how much you win? $5 and I’m like, and they get excited about five. Everybody gets excited. People love to win. John Martin is here. He likes to meet winners when you get the opportunity to do that. We’ve always tell the folks to play responsibly. Even though we’re out of March, we’re into April, do all of this responsibly. Do it within your budget and know your means, especially if you’re betting on baseball and the sports wagering. Um, sports wagering as a as a month, right? March is a big month, right? Because of the basketball tournament, correct? So it’s still one of the heavier wagered things on for anybody, above and beyond just the old picking the brackets.
John Martin 19:20
Yeah, it’ll be kind of the last huge month for sports wagering, and then we kind of get into a spring and summer lull before the NFL season and college football starts again at the end of the summer. But yeah, we’ll have our March numbers about April 10 or so, which is coming up. So, yeah, let’s, let’s when we talk again in the middle of April. We’ll, we’ll have updated out for you on, on March’s sports wagering numbers.
Nestor Aparicio 19:53
Yep, perfect, perfect. Happy Easter weekend to you. Everybody’s celebrating this weekend and Good Friday and doing all that stuff we got baseball. Season going on. We have beautiful weather happening right now, and I will be back out with the Maryland treasures. And I think the boardwalk ones have kind of my favorite of the four. We’ll have a fresh tickets Roz next Friday at fayley’s at Lexington market. Also, Stephen l miles, my old pal, we’re going to talk about it. A Baltimore legend is going to be joining us next Friday. Down to failure, I tried to talk John Miller into coming, the great John Miller broadcaster, because the giants are in town. And he said, I got too many obligations, but it was great to catch up with John Miller. Maybe I’ll get get him to at least visit on the show for a couple minutes next week, as well as the Giants come to town. It is baseball season. John’s happy about that. I’m happy about that we are wnst am 1570 Towson, Baltimore, and we never stopped talking Baltimore, positive, you.
