Welcome home. We are W, N, S T. Am 1570 to Baltimore. We are Baltimore positive, positively into the winter season. Here we’re gonna be into the crab cake season. I’m doing a Maryland crab cake tour two weeks from now, but we’re doing a cup of soup or bowl. It is all brought to you by friends at the Maryland lottery. I will have the remnant candy cane cash. You said Christmas can last all year. For me, we’ll have some winners. I had $100 winner. Cost us off one of these right before Christmas. We’re going to be getting back out before a cup of soup or bowl as well. And our friends at GBMC keeping us alive and well, well, this is gonna be interesting segment. John Martin could not be with us today. He has sent instead one of my favorite foils from the Maryland lottery. Long time Pittsburgh sports fan hanging out with longtime Baltimore sports family. Welcome, defending champion of all things communication. Seth Elkin joins us from the Maryland lottery, and these are tough times for our franchises. Seth, I you know, I mean, I don’t know that misery loves company, but you know, I’m miserable, and here you

Seth Elkin  01:06

are, Nestor, we are both looking for coaches. When’s the last time we said that? Right?

Nestor Aparicio  01:12

8

It’s crazy, right? Two decades ago. So, okay, you know, be Seth, Elkins, Steelers, fan in regard to Tom, and keeping in mind, be nice. Now he left me tickets last week. He left me tickets last week, and I’ve been texting back and forth. He said something about like, when pressure gets bad, he gets texts from friends knowing it’s bad. That was one of those guys when they were born renegade a couple months ago. So you know of my relationship with Mike, so I have a strong affinity for Mike Tomlin, and I did, it was not lost on me that the first text to him now is, now I can love you even more that you’re not the Steelers coach.

Seth Elkin  01:47

Well, you know, these are difficult times. I think, I think it’s interesting that these two franchises are having the same experience at the same time, and so many of the things that I’m hearing, you know, I live here, obviously now in Maryland. I’ve lived here a long time, but born and raised in Pittsburgh, so I’m very close to keeping track of what, what’s going on and what,

Nestor Aparicio  02:08

you know, like all the good ones, they escape. That’s what I say. You escape Pittsburgh. That’s good. You know what?

Seth Elkin  02:12

Stories are coming out of Pittsburgh, and listening to a lot of the sports talk from there, and the the the narratives are very much the same for both of these teams, right? Really are, and it’s, it’s difficult. You don’t like saying goodbye to somebody who’s been such an integral part of your franchise. And in Pittsburgh, we don’t say goodbye to people very often. We’re, we’re picking a coach now for the what, the third time in 50 years, or more than 50 Years 1969 we since 1969 we’ve had three head coaches, so it’s a rare thing, but, you know, it’s unfortunate. I think that it unraveled the way it did, but but also good that you’re gonna have a fresh start.

8

Nestor Aparicio  02:51

What a weird, like ending, like I even said to Luke, If I have to write Purple Rain three down the line, that kick sailing wide, and me being there in the corner as a guest to Tomlin, watching it, watching all of yins go crazy with the with the snot rags up in the air.

Seth Elkin  03:09

Careful ways, careful what you say when you disrespect the Terrible Towel, bad things can happen.

Nestor Aparicio  03:14

Did you see the drone show over Pittsburgh? Did you see the video? I did. Yeah. I did. Really beautiful. Like, it was just cool. Like, I almost wish I was there that night, but I was there last week. It was a lot of energy and all of that, but the end of both of their careers, you know, hinging on the last game in Pittsburgh, the kick going of all the things, of all the wars we’ve been through, was a kick that cost har ball and bashani basically said he had a week left anyway, in the press conference this week, which was its own little story and all that. And by the way, I’m still we saw some Raven scratch offs running around too. So just if you find them, buy them, you can use them. Unlike the raffle tickets, which you can’t get anymore, we’ll get into the lottery thing. Hey, next time we get together, you’ll have a new coach. We’ll have a new coach, defensive coordinator, offensive coordinator. We’ll have Lamar. You’ll still be looking for a quarterback.

Seth Elkin  04:01

8

That’s there’s the problem in a nutshell, right there. That’s right.

Nestor Aparicio  04:04

Well, good luck with Ryan O’Hearn on the baseball side too. Seth Falcon is here. He’s with the Maryland lottery. He communicates. What do you want to communicate this week with the mayor Leonard? New Year. We’re doing the Harlem Globetrotter thing here as well. I know people are winning, and sometimes you’re on the lookout for people with a big ticket out there or whatever. What’s the big story, the lottery right now? What’s going on?

Seth Elkin  04:22

A few things. I mean, you mentioned the Harlem Globetrotters. We’re coming up on the end of that promotion, January 19 is the last date to enter. And in that January 20 drawing, it’s the last drawing of that promotion. Somebody who, in that drawing is going to win a VIP experience, they’ll get to sit on the end of the bench, and, as you say, Get confetti thrown on them. Maybe they even get pulled into the game. Who knows what happens? You never know what’s going to happen in a Globetrotters game. Yeah, man, I’m all at it. They will be here in the area. They’ll be at UMBC on March 15 to play, and we’ll be sending folks and having a VIP experience there. But we shift over to a couple of new promotions that have launched here recently. We’re coming up on Winter Olympics and the. Uh, Winter Olympics coming in February. And actually, first of all, that goes back to an old promotion. We had a previous promotion where people won three of our winners that won a trip to Milan, who are going to be there in Milan in early February to go watch the Winter Olympics. So that’s kind of cool. And if you thought about that, that was like last year, right? We and it’s here already. We awarded the prize. You know far in advance, of course, and we’re doing it again, because right now going on is another team USA promotion now through February 22 you can enter any keynote ticket that you purchase between January 5 and February 22 and we’re doing drawings to send people to the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Five winners will get a trip to Los Angeles to go see the Olympics in a couple of years. And they’re also Team USA merchandise packs that you can win additional prizes. A great thing to have to pull out to cheer on Team USA here in the in the Winter Olympics coming up in February. But a really cool promotion and a really cool chance to win a trip. But there’s something special about any Olympics. But I have special memories, as I’m sure you do too, of the the two Olympics in our lifetimes that have been summer games that have been held in our lifetime here in the US, in Los Angeles, in 84 and in 1996 in Atlanta. And now, who knows what stories will be written in a couple of years at the LA games in 28 and we’ll have five Maryland lottery winners, winners there to to keep an eye on it and see what happens. So it’s a great opportunity and a great chance to win. So that promotion is going on right now. Lots of fun with

Nestor Aparicio  06:31

that dude. Olympics is something that I’ve never done, like, I’ve been to the World Cup in Germany. I’ve been, you know, I’ve been to the bull fights in Madrid. I, you know, I’ve been to a lot of things that I’ve wanted to do in my life. Never been to a cricket match. I mean, there’s some things I’ve never done, any I’ve been by them before. I’ve never been to, you know, highlight. You know, there’s things in life I’ve never experienced. But the Olympics are one of those things that, like the 84 Olympics to your point, growing up being a kid of the 70s and Dorothy Hamill and Peggy Fleming and Montreal and Munich. I mean, good things, bad things, awful things, tragic things, thrill of victory, agony, defeat, all of that the 84 Olympics that summer. Mary Lou Retton, I mean, I would tell you, I’ve been on the air 35 years, and Mary, Lou was struggling last year. She’s had a lot of adult issues in her life. She one of my favorite all time guests to ever sit with me. You know, like, ask Luke He was there. He’s like, I’ve never seen you light up. Like, I’m like, it was like, Mary Lou Retton, like, the greatest guest I’ve ever had. And I’ve had them all, you know, but, um, so the Olympic part of that. But I almost went in 96 when they had the bombing and the 84 thing, but it’s one thing I’ve never done. And I’m telling you, give people a chance to go do this, the fact that it’s coming back here, and the fact it like we’re giving away. I said last year, I’m like, Milan or LA, I would go to Milan. Go to Milan. I’m like, Well, you know, LA’s got better weather, but Milan’s got better coffee, so at least you’re sending people to both places. I’m looking forward to hearing the Milan stories. I like when you guys get the winners on, they come back and they tell me how good the coffee was. Yeah, I

8

Seth Elkin  07:57

think that Milan troupe is going to be something special, although I’m waiting as a as a big time hockey fan. I’m on pins and needles, waiting for them to get that ice rink taken care of. I keep seeing stories about how it’s not done yet, and the Olympics are a few weeks away, so hopefully that gets wrapped up soon, and they’ll have some great stuff to watch while they’re there. But yeah, five trips for Maryland lottery winners to the LA games in 2028 if you’re a keynote player. So now’s the time to buy your keynote tickets and enter them into my lottery rewards for a chance at that. And I’m looking forward, I always look forward to the Olympics. It’s a fun time to and a great event to watch.

Nestor Aparicio  08:29

My wife is glued to that man. She loves her stories. You know, do you believe in miracles? Seth Elkin is here from the Maryland lottery. He communicates professionally for the Maryland lottery, sitting there for John this week. But you know, it’s a good, I mean, Steelers, browns, Raven, everybody looking for coaching this division, so we’re all just watching either. Maybe this is your buffalo wins. I don’t know. You know, you tell me. I guess the jackpots at this point, 200 million, 100 million. 100 million. Do we have anybody out there, like, chasing a ticket? Is there was there’s like, a million dollar winner a couple weeks ago that you’re like, Oh, we haven’t gotten this person

Seth Elkin  09:08

forward yet. Yeah, we’ve got probably some of those Powerball wins from during that jackpot role where we had, I think, 29 prizes of at least $50,000 that were won during that three plus months that the jackpot was rolling along, and one of those million dollar winners, dollar winners, I I believe, at this point, is still not been claimed yet. The person still has another few months on that, because it was one in September. You got 182 days from the draw. I better get my wife,

Nestor Aparicio  09:32

8

she buys. I mean, I got, I better go make sure she checked her tickets, because it is a little bit I didn’t win, right? And you, you, maybe you feel that way, but you got to check your tickets. Yes, yeah, absolutely.

Seth Elkin  09:42

And it’s, course, it’s easy to do with the Maryland lottery app. You can check wherever you are. Download the app, available for iPhone and Android, and check your tickets wherever you are. You don’t even have to go to the store to do it anymore, but

Nestor Aparicio  09:53

there’s so much fun checking your tickets on the app. Like, I’m not a you know me, dude, I’m not a game player. I’m not. Not a shopper. I’m on my phone for info. I’m a nerd. I’m a news guy like you. I like information communication, so I’m not a game player like that. But when I check people’s tickets, when I’m out, they’re like, Hey, I don’t know how to play the game. This candy cane. Check this, and I go, boop. If I said boop, and the balloons go off, they want 100 bucks. I’ve had a couple of winners, and it’s it’s fun for me, and it ain’t my money,

Seth Elkin  10:22

you find out instantly. And I, you know, makes you wonder, we’ve had, we’ve had the app and the ability to check tickets for as long as I can remember. I’ve been here going on 11 years, and it’s been that way the entire time. It’s still new for some people. And you wonder, you know, what it was like before that? You know, how did we exist before mobile apps and the ability to find things

8

Nestor Aparicio  10:39

that I win, I think I won. Did I win? Did I win? Hand me ticket to the cashier. Can you tell me if I won? They slip it under their little red pub. Yeah, you want 10 bucks. But it’s different. When you see it on the phone, it feels it doesn’t even feel like it feels like a video game where you want you feel like you’re in the casino. For me, that’s the vibe I get. I won. I won.

Seth Elkin  10:59

There’s one person out there that’s got a very big win that happened just this week. We have not seen this winner yet, so I don’t have the person’s story to tell, but I know that the tickets been sold just by the record that we’ve got available to us. We had somebody who played race tracks a couple of days ago who won a 1210, eight, seven, super fecta. So if you, if you’re familiar with race tracks, the it’s a computer animated horse race.

Nestor Aparicio  11:26

It looks like real, like when I’ve walked into Costas, and they’re not the listen. The cost is in Timonium. It is real. There’s double cast. There’s real racing everywhere. The cost is in Dundalk, on the far corner, on the right side, over top where the kitchen opens up, there’s, there’s a TV there. That many times I have come in and thought, Mr. Costas has the races on, but he’s got race tracks on. So, yes.

Seth Elkin  11:53

8

So the the way, the way the game works in each race there, the horses are numbered one through 12, and the results are weighted so the higher numbered horses, those eight, 910, 1112, horses, are going to finish in the top four less frequently than the lower numbered horses do, and that’s reflected in the prize structure. You win larger prizes if you hit when you’ve got those higher numbered horses that finish in the top four. It’s a long shot, right? It’s a long shot, exactly, and somebody earlier this week hit on a 1210, eight, seven, superfecta and had the three time bonus on the ticket. So they played the bonus. When you played bonus on race tracks, it doubles the price. So if you played for $1 bet on that race, it would take the price to $2 but for that $2 bet, this person won, believe it or not, you’re sitting down.

Nestor Aparicio  12:43

Glad I am. Stand up. I mean, and applaud or what? The person won $660,000

Seth Elkin  12:50

the base prize for hitting a 1210, eight, seven, superfecta on a $1 bet is $220,000 but they added the bonus, and the bonus multiplier for that race was three. So it tripled the prize to $660,000

Nestor Aparicio  13:04

it is as now I know why John Martin’s not here. He’s got to go figure how to pay this bill, looking

8

Seth Elkin  13:09

for the money to pay for that $660,000 prize. That’s right. So imagine you’re sitting and so the ticket was sold. We can tell you where it was sold. It was American Legion Post 226, in Edgewater. So somebody who was sitting there playing

Nestor Aparicio  13:21

WoW, right down there in Annapolis, I like it and

Seth Elkin  13:25

and watch those horses finish in that order, looked at their ticket and said, Wow, and then maybe looked at the app and saw the balloons and saw 600

Nestor Aparicio  13:33

8

I wonder if the numbers are like somebody’s birthday or like is because you’re really not. I mean, horses are realistic, and they have Nate like, you know, if you like the name, you know, Blue by you, you can bet on that horse, right? You know, whatever you want to bet on, but it, it is the AI thinks crazy, you know. I don’t want to say, you know, but people have so much fun with all this. You mentioned Aquino game and the US and the team USA, I was at Costa cintimony, people were playing, and I said to him, you know, LA, they’re like, We know about this. We, we got the app, and they were real horse racing people too. So I was like, sort of watching all of it happen out there, because that’s the way, you know, people have a good time when they’re doing this. And I love that. It’s like a $2 bet that won all that money. You know, it’s not people that chasing. They’re chasing a big pot with a small thing, and they’re not getting crazy with this. We always tell people do this responsibly, have a good time with this, right? I mean,

Seth Elkin  14:21

this is the cool things, especially about those two games, Kino and race tracks. They’re displayed on monitors at lottery retailers all over the state. There especially tend to be games that people engage with at bars and restaurants, because you sit, you get a drink, you get something to eat, and you buy a ticket, and you watch the drawings as they happen and see if you win, and it’s great when people engage them in that social atmosphere. And I hopefully that person had a nice little celebration when they realized that they won $660,000 and can’t wait to meet them, because I’m sure there’s a great story behind it, and we’ll be enthusiastic about telling that when we get a chance to so I

Nestor Aparicio  14:58

love we got new games. We got. Ravens. We’re gonna do tickets for 20 years. We’ll be doing that in a couple weeks. I hope we’re gonna do home run riches. We move to maybe move the fence back in a little bit more. But other games I just come up to New Year, the Harlem Globetrotters games go away. Multiply your fun right out here at MD lottery, you got these X games that you bring at 10x 20x 50x and I’m always and anytime I bring this up, there’s a lot of money that can be won on scratch offs. And I guess it’s pretty good time to tell people that, yeah, they went 100 bucks. They’re shocked that you can win a lot more than 100 bucks on a

Seth Elkin  15:32

scratch off the the multiplier family of tickets. So one of them actually went on sale in December, and then the rest of them just launched this this in the past week here in January. And so the six different multiplier tickets, we call them the multiplier family, or times the cash because that’s kind of the way they’re designated, if you look at the titles of them, but yeah, you can win instantly up to $2 million on that $20 200 times the cash ticket. And then there is a second chance promotion connected with these tickets. So you have a chance to win $50,000 prizes or a $75,000 prize in the final drawing. And those multiplier drawings are going to Second Chance drawings are going to be going on for the next several months. The last one of them actually doesn’t happen until the early part of July, so lots of time to get those tickets entered and non winning times the cash multiplier. Family tickets into my lottery rewards, and you have the chance to get in on those. We’ll have five different drawings coming up between now and the early part of July, or we’re giving away cash prizes. So lots of chances to win instantly, and those chances to win on the second chance promotion too. So love the look of those tickets, to the neon look and the the multi colored look of them. So pretty cool tickets,

8

Nestor Aparicio  16:43

you know, i i If it glitters and shimmers, I tend to like it. That’s why I don’t like the Steelers helmets or the Browns helmets. Seth Malkin is here. He is with the Maryland lottery. Last thing for you that we I don’t talk about it a lot and and we talk about jackpots and big money and sort of parlor games and whatnot. You got a lot going on with fast play right now that are taking, I would say, casino games, ramping that up. Fast plays like a scratch off, not a scratch off, but it plays progressive. And, you know, I know what a progressive jackpot is from like being in a casino and watching think of but this is going on every single day at MD lottery. People could take a look at this. But if you’re out the fast play games right now are games that even I understand, like poker and craps, yeah,

Seth Elkin  17:29

fast play we launched the fast play games actually coming up on their sixth anniversary now, in 2020, and it was, it was right before it was right before covid hit, and we got them in right before the that all kind of came down on us, but so it may be off to a bit of a slow start with them because of that, because people you got to be out there to go buy the tickets, but they’re available in in any lottery retail, where you can buy them in the vending machines. You can buy them from the terminals, the cork operated terminals at the register. As you say, they are very much like scratch off tickets, but there’s no scratching. A lot of the play styles are similar. You find out instantly if you’ve won. And we just launched a set of fast play tickets that are all casino game themed. So we’ve got a number of them, three card poker. We got a back route, we got a craps we got another poker game, a blackjack ticket. Some of them have, as you mentioned, progressive jackpots to them. So each time a ticket is purchased and the jackpot is not one, it increments up, and the jackpot gets larger, over 100

Nestor Aparicio  18:29

grand right now, so in a casino, cash almost up to 200 grand. So it’s like it’s a lot of money.

Seth Elkin  18:34

8

Yep, you can follow those, those numbers on our website or on the mobile app. Every 15 minutes those numbers get updated of what those progressive jackpots are. That’s better. Ned McMahon, I mean, actually, if you’re in the store, it’s even more instant than that. If you buy one of those progressive jackpot tickets, the current jackpot as of the time that you bought your ticket is going to appear on the ticket. It’ll tell you here’s what the jackpot is at at this point, if you happen to win, that’s what it’s going to be. So, yeah, it’s, it’s a really cool concept, and something that I think, in particular, people who are interested in card games are going to embrace those fast play tickets. They’re doing pretty well here in the early days that they’ve been on sale. And some something fun, a little, a little extra variance to what we do. We’re always looking to vary the kinds of games that we have, and try to have a something that appeals to the broadest possible cross section of our players. Seth Elkin is here.

Nestor Aparicio  19:25

He communicates for the Maryland lottery. I’m going to give you a little form here. I don’t know next time I’m going to have you on, next time I have you on, there’ll be little black and gold plumes of smoke coming up over, you know, pit University, and same thing out here at the castle with the purple smoke. We’ll have coaches and all that. This is a time of year where people maybe bet, and don’t normally bet, and they bet sort of in the Hey, you want a poll number, you hit a number in my poll, whatever. Lay it out for legal gambling here. And if people are going to be doing this on the up and up, if they’re doing props, they’re doing all these crazy things with the Super Bowl as to who’s. Going to sing the national anthem, where they’re going to hit the high note the right way. I mean, all these crazy stuff you can bet on a couple weeks from now, but there is a thing where, like, for all these years, it was very black market, very go down to the bar and get a get your number in for 100 bucks, and Louis will pay at the bar or whatever. Dangers in that don’t need to be spoken, but people are going to gamble on sports. Here it is the Super Bowl coming up. There’s legal ways to do it now that are on the up and up. It funds the state, so I want to point that out. But more than that, you’re going to get paid. It’s going to be on the up and up, and that’s what I keep saying. And by the way, it’s in front of me so much that it’s almost disturbing, right? Give me $5 we’ll get 300 with your first win. Like I hear all of that, and that worries me, and I know it worries you. And John Martin, where’s the state? Because this has come on kind of quickly, and we want to keep people in the lanes right with this.

Yeah, this is, this is a busy time of year. Really. The throughout the football season is when you see the most wagering activity happening in sports betting. And January in particular, you’ve got a dozen NFL playoff games in January. You’ve got the college football playoffs. You’re in full season mode on college and pro basketball and hockey and all kinds of other things. The Olympics are coming. People will be betting on that. So, yeah, it’s, it’s the phrase you use is, one I like is slow your roll. Don’t try to chase your losses. Be careful with parlay wagers. They’re enticing because they pay out more if you win. But a parlay is always going to be stacked against you. The house always does better when you place a parlay bet than the players do, so you got to be careful. You need multiple things to go right if you’re going to win a parlay wager. So if you want to have fun with it, keep it fun. Place a few straight bets. Keep it something that you do in moderation and and, as you say, also make sure you’re using the legal, licensed operators. We have 12 mobile sports wagering platforms that are licensed in the state of Maryland. There are 11 retail locations that are licensed for sports wagering as well. There are, unfortunately, a lot of illegal sites that are operating. And you know, you mentioned something about betting on the on the national anthem, or how long the national anthem is going to be, or what color the Gatorade is going to be that gets thrown on the winning coach at the end of the Super Bowl. Those kinds of wagers are actually wagers that our licensed operators are not permitted to take. So people who might be tempted to make a bet like that because it’s something ancillary to the game. The only way to do that is if you’re doing it with an illegal operation, and if you do that, you’re doing it at your own risk. You don’t know if you’re going to get paid, you don’t know if your data is going to be protected. And so we strongly encourage people, please don’t use these illegal platforms. We unfortunately know that they’re out there, but use the if you’re going to bet on sports. Please do it responsibly, and please do it through the the legal, licensed operators that we have in the state.

Who’s gonna be the next Steelers coach? Let’s get to it right now. I have, I have no idea who’s gonna win a Super Bowl. I’m not in the prediction business, but the Super Bowl for Buffalo, by the way, that’s all this weekend is look out for Buffalo, but look out for Buffalo.

They’re not as good this year as they might have been in prep. Sometimes that works, but, you know, maybe you don’t need to.

That’s the formula. Seth Elkin is here. We’re trying to figure out who his coach, my coach, our coach, your coach, the coach, as well as it’s almost baseball season, it’s almost pitchers and catchers. Luke will be on it. Anything that happens, breaking news, purple plumes of smoke. You’ll get first on the wnst tech service that is brought to you by cold roofing and Gordian energy. And I will have these candy cane cashes to give away for a cup of soup or bowl. We’re going to kick that off at faidley’s. We’re going to do five shows, five days, all charities, all community, all in, all the time. It’s all brought to you by friends at the Maryland lottery, conjunction with our friends at GBMC. I am Nestor. We are wnsd am 1570 Towson, Baltimore, and we never stop talking Baltimore positive.

What are the real qualifications of the next head coach of the Baltimore Ravens?

Lots of storytelling in this one as Nestor Aparicio shares with Leonard Raskin the original document that David Modell handed him 27 years ago when he was about to hire Brian Billick to be the next head coach of the Baltimore Ravens. They wonder how many of these "line items" current owner Steve Bisciotti would agree with – and whether they ever applied to John Harbaugh at all?

How important are "the fans" to Steve Bisciotti and the Baltimore Ravens?

In a conversation about leadership styles and the tone set by Baltimore Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti this week, Bill Cole and Nestor take a 30-year view on the franchise and its responsibility to the community. Will a new head coach change the culture in Owings Mills? Will Lamar Jackson win a Super Bowl? There's plenty of interest in the local NFL franchise as it transitions from two decades of John Harbaugh to whatever is next...
