Nestor Aparicio  00:01

Welcome home. We are W N, S T AM, 1570 tacit Baltimore. We are Baltimore, positive, positively getting the Maryland crab cake tour back out on the road. I have the new Maryland treasures tickets, and I actually saw the artist doing a little piece for Frederick on on these different pieces in the in the Bay Bridge and the horses of Assateague and the boardwalk I will have these next week at Koco’s. On the 23rd we have a whole bunch of dates up at Baltimore positive. First of May, we’re going to be pizza John’s in Essex. Seventh of May, we’re going to be at Planet Fitness, at Timonium, doing a special show that day. And also on May 13, nothing more special than the Preakness in town. We’re doing the Lexington market crab races. Ivan Bates is going to be joining me that day. It is the 13th of May. That is freakness week around here. And I thought these were Preakness horses, but now these are the ones that are running an assetique so different horses, not chicken either, because that would be Virginia. We don’t promote their lottery or Delaware crab cakes. But went through that last week. I ducked this guy last week, John Martin is ducking me this week because we had a salami the other night. Good job, Jeremiah Jackson, but the Baltimore was were swept by the Pittsburgh Pirates a week and a half ago. Seth Elkin will be eating off of this. Well, I don’t know, dude, you got a pretty good year man that wide right with the loop thing, and that you got a new coach, and we got a new coach. Seth Falcon is of yins in that in the western Pennsylvania area, but he represents the Maryland lottery, and he is my friend in foil, forcing me to break out my buckos. The story of the logo and how the logo was created, and who this is supposed to be.

Seth Elkin  01:36

I don’t think I do. I probably should, and I don’t know.

Nestor Aparicio  01:39

8

Well, I’m gonna force you to go watch Dwayne reader from the Roberto Clemente Museum, who came on last week, did a half an hour with me for Yin at because I heard a million people are going to Pittsburgh to the confluence next week for the draft. So I wanted to promote the Clemente Museum. Have you been to the Clemente Museum? You have to have been right.

Seth Elkin  01:59

I have not, believe it or not. I’ve been to the to the Heinz History Center, which has a great Pittsburgh sports history display, and I’ve been to the Warhol Museum, the Andy Andy Warhol’s originally from Pittsburgh. I’ve been there, but I have not been to the Clemente Museum. I’ve been

Nestor Aparicio  02:12

to Heinz Hall. I saw Tony Bennett do the All Star Game concert there in 90 was 94 was his All Star game. There 94 Yep, and McGriff hitting the big home runs and all of that. So I saw the great attorney of Bennett is singing to take me out into the ball game. Yeah. So I had a little bit of that going on. Um, anything you want to say about baseball? Because, like, John stuck in me and the Orioles play the Cleveland guardians this weekend. You did not duck me last week, but the Orioles really stumbled in Pittsburgh, but they’ve muscled up a little bit heat. Alonso, costing some money, and gunner Henderson, a little bit home run riches, is really alive and well. And that grand slam that went out the other day, it got it got a John Martin attacks. For me, I’m like, Ah, five grand. People win money.

Seth Elkin  03:04

I will quickly say that I’m very happy with the the early results for the pirates, which is not a sentence that comes out of my mouth very often, because they haven’t been very good traditionally, but they, they had a good offseason, and they’re off to a nice start.

8

Nestor Aparicio  03:18

And I hope it’s a good year for Jens, and that was fun sweeping the Orioles, beautiful stadium up there. And you got schemes, right? We got more than that. I mean, they’re, they’re pretty decent team. Ryan O’Hearn, there’s some, there’s some reasons to not hate on the pirates, even though, every time I hear we are family, and by the way, Luke caught them on Sunday during the kids run the bases thing they played, we are family in Baltimore at an Oreo game. Yeah, that really should be

Seth Elkin  03:48

blasphemy, shouldn’t it? Somebody there

Nestor Aparicio  03:51

needs to get a letter in Katie Griggs department about that should not be happening. It just should not be. But onto the field, you guys are giving some money away. And every night there’s a different star. That’s the magic of Oreo baseball. But every night, somebody gets a chance to win, and I have cheesesteak Dave, my buddy from last year, had a chance, but I’m hoping I’ll know one of these 162 contestants.

Seth Elkin  04:10

8

Yeah, that grand slam you mentioned the other day that that came in the middle of the pirates 15 to six drubbing of the nationals that night. So as I was watching that, I got a text from Doug Lloyd, who’s our second chance drawings manager, celebrating that we had a grand slam and and two other home runs in that game. And so it was Judith Franco from gaithersburg, who won $6,500 in that game on April 13 because of the Grand Slam and the two other home runs and $500 for being selected.

Nestor Aparicio  04:37

Well, she was a nationals fan. She’s not anymore, probably not yet

Seth Elkin  04:40

nationals territory, but now she’s an Orioles fan, for sure. That’s by far the biggest one of those prizes that we’ve had. And of course, if you don’t know what we’re talking about, let’s, let’s fill everybody in the home run riches walk off, winnings fast play ticket, and then the contestant of The Game promotion that’s attached to that you can enter any home run riches walk off. Winnings ticket into your My lottery rewards account. It’s a $5 ticket. You may win instantly on the ticket itself, but whether it’s a winner or not, you can enter it for a chance to be a contestant of the game. We do those drawings monthly throughout the baseball season, and actually the next one is coming up. The deadline to enter for the the May drawing is April the 20th, and then on April 21 we’ll do the drawing for all of the games in the month of May. So you still got a few days to get in on that and and then we’ll select all those winners, including the the VIP contestant.

Nestor Aparicio  05:33

Then that’s coming up like this month. You do that once a month. And the truest thing, right? One, I had some friends the other night, Monday night, from my accelerant buddies that were in the truest suites. And they the pictures, the videos, the review, the Oh yeah. I mean, I just saw Yeah. I mean, it was Monday night. Monday night was a really good night. That was the seven to one, the comeback and, you know, the home runs and the grand slam right? So Monday night for the 8000 people that were there, whatever they had if you stayed, because it was seven to one, yeah, yeah, I don’t think you leave the true or sweet in the sixth inning when it’s seven to one and they’re bringing bonbons out. I think you stay. But that being said, they were all treated to a lot more than just the treats. But I did see, it’s the first time it’s shown up on my timeline. People actually in that space that used to be the press box, used to be the Jim Edmond press box having a party in a good time. It was a group of people that I know pretty well. I saw big shrimp and crab. I mean, I saw the food, yeah. I mean, yeah.

8

Seth Elkin  06:33

And on, on April the 29th you will get to see lottery winner Angela Ruffin from colesville, and three of her guests who will get that experience, they will get to be in the truest club. They’ll get to go down on the field before the Game and Watch batting practice from the field and get a special look at the Madison studios as well. A lot of inside looks at things and a great experience if you’re a baseball fan, this VIP experience where we’re giving away one of those each month. So one home game a month, and she’s

Nestor Aparicio  07:04

actually the person that night that if they hit three home runs, she screams and shouts at the game. And that is sort of a new thing, right? That’s the hope that

Seth Elkin  07:12

she is. She’s the contestant. She will be there to watch it, and hopefully we get some some good video of that, and we’ll have that out on our Facebook.

Nestor Aparicio  07:23

8

2920 they’re playing the Astros

Seth Elkin  07:25

at night, all right? Houston, yep. And so then the next one that comes up when we do that may, drawing the next contestant of the game, or the VIP game in May, is the 26th against the Tampa

Nestor Aparicio  07:37

Bay Rays. So that’s Tuesday, the 26th I’m looking at that a

Seth Elkin  07:40

division game, and we’ll see who that is coming up next week. When we do that drawing, we’ll find out who that winner is going to be. So along with all of the other winners for the contestant of The for the games

8

Nestor Aparicio  07:51

during the month of May, semi old rope dope, first five, six innings, get into the bullpen. Let’s tee off. Let’s hit three. You know, hit three off the ball. Pen. Seth Elkin is here. He communicates professionally for all things Maryland, lottery and gaming, and joins us sometimes when John Martin’s not around, sometimes just to rub in a pirate sweep of the Orioles or a Steelers field goal that goes wide, right? Hey, man, we got draft coming up next week. This whole, you know, football’s coming back, right? I mean, this is a fun week for football people around here.

Seth Elkin  08:19

Yeah, it’s, going to be crowded in downtown Pittsburgh. It’s, it’s hard enough to get around in downtown Pittsburgh as it is, but with all those people crammed in there, it’s, it’s going to be a bit of an adventure, but a great experience, I’m sure, for the city. And maybe one day here in Baltimore, we’ll, we’ll get to host it here and see what that’s like.

Nestor Aparicio  08:37

Well, you know, I’ve had questions about that, so I want to talk fast play with you, because I was out there night at Costa tonight, I saw Kino come up in a way that I hadn’t seen it, where the back screen has like Oriole Park and the balls come out, or there was something else that was it was interesting, like to me, there were a whole bunch of different settings in Maryland where kino’s playing the fast Play. Part of this in playing fast play is really like a scratch off that you don’t scratch

Seth Elkin  09:04

8

right, correct? Yep, that’s exactly the way to describe it. It’s the same kind of play styles that you would see on a scratch off ticket, and you find out immediately if you’ve won, you don’t have to scratch anything. And the other great thing about fast play is that those tickets are available at any Maryland Lottery retailer, whereas a scratch off ticket, you got to find a store that has the ticket you’re looking for in stock a fast play game. Any fast play game that we’re selling is going to be available at any retailer that you go to, through the vending machines or at the terminal. So you can you can get those anywhere. And that’s the walk off winnings ticket that’s connected with the home run riches promotion is a fast play game. We used to have a scratch off ticket that was connected with the the contestant of the game, and we decided to convert it over into a fast play game. It makes it more convenient for the players, because, as I say, they’re able to get it whatever retailer they’re at. They don’t have to look for one that happens to have a certain scratch off in stock. So but they’re, they’re, they’re fun games. They’re they’re games with the. The same kind of play style that you might find on a scratch off ticket, and some of them actually like home run riches have a progressive jackpot prize. Well, that’s where I was

Nestor Aparicio  10:08

going to get to it, because when I go up to MD lottery every week, and I prepare to even just talk to you guys about winners or who spun the wheel, which is all I like that would get to that. That’s fun. I came in, I was asking, Where’s the wheel? They wouldn’t show it to me. Roz wouldn’t let me see the wheel. But the fast play when I pull up here. Mean, some of the progressives are a couple 1000 bucks, some of them are a couple 100,000 bucks. And so the progress, I mean, 1.58 8 million is in one of them right now, these progressive jackpots are enormous in the fast play games.

Seth Elkin  10:39

Yeah, it’s, it’s something that I think people keep an eye on, and they’re looking to see those jackpots rising. You know, when we first started the progressive jackpots on the fast play games, we were kind of fascinated with it, because you can go to MD lottery.com, and every 15 minutes on our website, if you go to the fast play page, if you refresh every 15 minutes. You can see the up to date progressive jackpot.

Nestor Aparicio  11:05

It’s like a tote board at the race track where the number the the handle goes up kind of, sort of right when you when you

8

Seth Elkin  11:10

buy a ticket, you’ll get the up to the minute amount printed right on the ticket. But on our website, it updates every 15 minutes with where those jackpot numbers are at. So you can take a look at those and keeping

Nestor Aparicio  11:20

math Seth, I’m confused by it, you know.

Seth Elkin  11:24

Well, that’s, that’s why we ended up in Word, Word jobs instead of numbers. Job.

Nestor Aparicio  11:28

8

No, no, no. This is why my dad taught me batting averages and earn run average through math. That was part of the whole, that was the spirit of the whole thing. I want to talk about the spin game with you, the big spin. I mean, you work in the office there. And when I was in last week, your door was shut, and you were in council, and John’s out on assignment this week. And, I mean, you guys are working hard there. Lots of things happen. But I take the path that the winners take, which is very interesting to me, that when I come to your office, every time I come, I’m coming to get tickets, because I do go down and I pick them up and I say hello to you, or say hello to Doug sometimes. And people in your office, and you come out, I see all the same folks that set up when I’m out at events and added events you’re doing with country jams and nights at the home and garden shows and all of that stuff. But when winners come in and they park their car on the little lot right across in the rural farms by Carol Park classic five, one of my partners, and I buzz in, and I take the thing up to the next floor, and I go in, there’s something about like, when people show up and they’ve already won 50 grand before they’ve walked in the door, they might win another 100, 200 whatever, being there, and sort of the game sureification of the fun that You have. And I know I think we’re doing the Monty Hall. Let’s Make a Deal thing with some winners. You just got winners going to Chicago. You just said winners came back from the Olympics, these experiential things, and they’re awesome. And it’s great that folks get off and Doug comes on and talks to me about it. But when somebody comes down there excited and they drove in with their loved ones, and they’ve won a lot of money, and they might want a whole lot more money. This big spin thing kind of stops your office a little bit because it’s fun watching people win. It’s fun when people win five bucks, when I make cost us or Koco’s giving out tickets, you know, we, we, it’s a

Seth Elkin  13:13

special experience for the winners who get to come and do that. And you’re right that giving, giving them that extra little experience beyond just simply, they won a prize. They know when they walk in here, there are eight winning tickets in the big spin that that win that, that are Willy

Nestor Aparicio  13:30

Wonka, okay, to spin the wheel. Yeah, those are the eight. So you have already seen three or four come in, right? Two of them, two. Okay, all right,

Seth Elkin  13:38

you have come in. So there are still six more as of the right now, when you and I are talking that there are six more that have not been claimed yet, and we’re waiting, along with everybody else, to find out who gets those and when they come in, and it is a fun experience for them that the minimum prize on the wheel when they get to spin it, it’s a it’s a roughly six foot tall game show style wheel. And when the minimum prize you can win is $50,000 the top prize is $250,000 so one of our two winners, we had them both here the same day. As a matter of fact, they claimed it at different times, but we set things up to have them both spin on the same day, and one of them nearly won that $250,000 prize, and we haven’t seen one of those. We did the big spin two years ago in 2024 and none of those winners ended up with that $250,000 and this time around, we’re hoping we get one. And the second person who spun that day was an anonymous winner from Mount Airy, and he almost ended up on that $250,000 it almost stopped in that spot, and then it tipped over, and the next spot next to it was $50,000 so we were, we were all hoping, and if you get a chance to see

8

Nestor Aparicio  14:50

my heart sink saying, telling me that story,

Seth Elkin  14:53

you get a chance to go see the video. It’s on our on our Facebook page, you can see Mike Powell from the lottery, who’s our, our on camera. Host and does a lot of multimedia work for us, and Mike was I got to have him on the show.

Nestor Aparicio  15:05

We got to set that up. Mike was on the

Seth Elkin  15:06

8

mic and was really hoping, and you could see his reaction. He wanted that $250,000 to land, and it didn’t quite happen. But still,

Nestor Aparicio  15:15

I’m jealous. I’ve always wanted to be a game show host, but I wound up here. Guy walks out of

Seth Elkin  15:19

here with $50,000 and the other winner was Tony Lightner from Baltimore, who

Nestor Aparicio  15:24

fan. I saw him with $100,000

8

Seth Elkin  15:27

and was in his Orioles gear. He was in his old school O’s gear. Yeah. So that was that was cool to see, and we enjoyed that. And that is a fun time for them. And something we

Nestor Aparicio  15:36

enjoy doing, I’m going to make you go watch the Dwayne reader Clemente museum piece so you can learn the story of who that Buccaneer really is in that logo back in the 1960s Seth Falcon is here. He communicates with the Maryland lottery, as well as for all things Pittsburgh sports. Have you ever been in his office? He has allowed me to wipe my feet on the Sidney Crosby penguins, Stanley Cup. You have a doormat there, literally, which is perfect. I think that’s that the Sydney of vechkin thing, right? Like, 100 times, right?

Seth Elkin  16:09

The doormat reference has been perfect for the penguins for the last couple of years. And you had your fun,

Nestor Aparicio  16:15

8

dude stop, you know, but they, but

Seth Elkin  16:16

they, they’ve made the playoffs this year against

Nestor Aparicio  16:19

all so the flyers

Seth Elkin  16:21

and who were, who the penguins are playing in the first round. So that’s going to be fun. But you know, it’s, it’s, it’s interesting. You mentioned that because the fact that the penguins made the playoffs is goes to the cautionary tale that we like to talk about when we talk about sports wagering. We just reported the march sports wagering numbers a few days back, and you know, the the numbers are good. We’re now over $105 million in contributions to the state from sports wagering through the first nine months of fiscal year 2026 so we got three months left, we’re already over $105 million and if we keep the same pace for those last three months that we had last year, we’re going to end up pushing somewhere close to $130 million in total contributions to the state from sports betting. And you know, that’s that’s, as we talk about all the time, that’s money that that wasn’t there a few years ago, that now is there. It’s a stream of funding for the blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund, which supports public schools, and also a small portion of it that goes to the state’s general revenue fund. So I saw, you know, they just

8

Nestor Aparicio  17:24

closed down the session the other day. I mean, they’re trying to find money always for things in our state, and this is something that, along with cannabis and a handful of other new things that have been part of funding education in our state, like so and I, we talked about this, and you said, 130 million. I know, you know, you guys fiscal to July. One you and I will be getting together in August. I’m coming down for the Mako event that I do in Ocean City, with all the political people in the Chris Van Hollens coming on and the Jamie raskins and all that. But, you know, celebrating the state and everything that you do. I just want to end this on this, this Maryland treasures, thing that I’ve been giving these out, people have a really good time looking at this because, like we talked about the state and gambling and revenue, and I always say on the up and up and safely, and all of the things that you and John been a part of in the modern era of getting sports wagering on and it being on the up and up. And when I’m at Costas doing the show on places, people are on their phones, you know, wagering on this stuff, I always tell people, man, go slow. And we talk about that, and then we did a whole month on it last month. But I just think there’s a lot to celebrate about, like, the fact that 100 $30 million was going sort of to the underground in whatever way that the the perforated, not as an inducement to wager in all the ways that people were betting. I want people to be responsible about it, but there is a part where we should scream louder about this, and I know we will in August as well, about what it does for the state.

Seth Elkin  19:00

Yeah. And we always mentioned the responsible gaming end of this, you know. And that’s why I say cautionary tale when it comes to the penguins. If you I’m a lifelong penguins fan, if you had asked me in October, six months ago, are the penguins going to make the playoffs, I would have said absolutely not. And yet, here they are. So you just don’t know what’s going to happen. As much of a sports fan as you are, and as knowledgeable as you think you are, just be careful when you’re wagering and don’t go overboard with it. Make sure it’s something that you do in moderation as entertainment, and treat it that way. And that’s the healthy way to go about it. And and then then we can all with good conscience, celebrate the fact that it’s generating revenue to support education programs in the state. This thing’s

Nestor Aparicio  19:41

been the most fun because, like, I see, do you want the horsey one, or do you want the Heron one? So this is, this is good. I’m going to have these for the next month, month and a half. This is the Maryland treasures. This began last year as an art project that sort of intrigued my wife and her sister, because they’re artsy people about. Motifs. I saw one of the local artists from Frederick lawn talking about her art creations and stuff. So got real professional artists. I will have these out. I will be at Koco’s on the 23rd pizza John’s on May, 1 Planet Fitness, at Timonium on the seventh of May, and then the 13th of May, we get ready for and at Laurel this year. These aren’t the real horses. These are the horses that we see like an assety but we’ll be giving these out on the 13th for the Lexington market crab races. And of course, our partners at faveleys are going to be open the new fishmonger’s daughter over Catonsville, right next to State Fair, and across Mel Guapa, down the street from Beaumont. And we’re getting ready for spring around here and home run riches and lots of home runs, and people going to the truest club and all that good stuff. All right, you didn’t beat me up. Too bad. I mean, like the Orioles don’t get to seek any revenge on the pirates. And let’s be honest, after 71 and 79 I mean, the Dwayne reader guy, nice guy and all that, but he did talk a little bit too much about 1971 for my taste, and he knows that. And I would

Seth Elkin  20:59

8

talk about 1979 I don’t remember 71 I do remember 79 though, quite well.

Nestor Aparicio  21:04

We lost Phil Garner this week scrap iron.

Seth Elkin  21:06

Yeah, was it’s, it’s sad to see that. You know, they did it. They did a 40th anniversary celebration for the 1979 team in 2019 I was there that weekend, and it was great to see a lot of those guys and have them recognized on the field. And they did an autograph signing that I went to. I got a poster signed by a whole bunch of those guys.

Nestor Aparicio  21:27

Dave Parker was still alive then, right?

8

Seth Elkin  21:28

Dave Parker was still there. Yep, Grant Jackson was still there.

Nestor Aparicio  21:32

See, I knew grant. Grant was a pitching coach and a roving guy with the Orioles in the 90s. I knew grant Jackson. Yeah, he used to show me his pirates ring to him, you know, Bill Garner, I never had the honor, or Omar Moreno or his wife, but yeah, I mean, you take it hard when you’re 10 and you lose the World Series, right? I mean, yeah, you know, it’s just or when

Seth Elkin  21:54

you’re in your 20s and you lose in game seven of the NLCS, as happened to the pirates when I was in college, so,

you know, as a Baltimore sports fan, and this speaks to me looking at my Baltimore Colts belt buckle here, because I collect these old belt buckles. I I’ve moved past being angry at Bob Irsay or Jim Irsay, and they’re both dead now anyway, and the Carly Irsay girl, and even the pirates and Burt Bly Levin and I had, like we had a Caesar salad and a, you know, and a proper bookmaker down at the sabatinos one day. So like, I feel like I can move past some of these things, because we’ve had two parades here with our football team right now, the Orioles, all different things been 42 years. I know you probably feel that we even met the pirates from 79 and what they went through in the early 90s and Sid bream and like all of that, I feel that too. But I do feel like if you’re from Pittsburgh and you are and I walk into your goofy little office to Maryland lotteries, Terry Bradshaw and one for the thumb and Tomlin won. Cower won, no one the penguins won. Lemieux won, Crosby won, even if Atkin one, you know, even the nationals have won, not the wizards, but even the Terps, you’re still waiting on the Orioles. I’m just saying, like, I’m not, well, I’m not waiting on the Orioles because I was Aaron 83 my dad, we almost got killed that night, Philly. So like, I’m almost whole. You know what I mean? Like, not like John Martin is still waiting on the baseball team, including, you know, saying or the browns. You know, even worse, right? So there are some starving, struggling people, and I like measuring your city against the pirates, or mine against the Orioles. You know, at our age, even we both have seen them win. For the kids, it’s up to, you know, they can go fight their own battles. But I do feel like Pittsburgh’s had it pretty good. You got the you got the draft this week. I mean, there have been nice celebrations in regard to Pittsburgh in the modern era that you have hanging all over your wall as a Pittsburgh fan, right?

Seth Elkin  23:54

We’ve, we’ve had, we’ve had a lot of championships. The one thing that I would love to see, I hope I get to see it is to see a Pittsburgh team clinch a championship at home, because that has not happened since Bill Masur osky, who we also just recently lost.

Nestor Aparicio  24:09

By the way, I was in Pittsburgh the day that the hardball ball fell short. I was at that game. I was there when Pittsburgh went back. I was at chauncey’s the night before, doing the hustle, I swear to God, right there in the sharing, you know, I was there, right, right? So anyway, all right, it’s all about the ring. It’s all about the blink. You know, Seth Elkin, he is communicating for the Maryland lottery and having a good time. And so I hope I made you feel warm and fuzzy about all the Pittsburgh victories, and try to pump you up a little bit after you win three meaningless games in April. Well, we didn’t hit enough home runs, so I hope the orals hit a bunch of home runs. Seth is joining us this week. John will be back. I think he’s on assignment for one more week, so it might be you and I next week. Play responsibly. Everybody. Come on out and claim these beautiful Maryland treasures.
