Nestor J. Aparicio 00:00
Welcome home we are W n s t, Towson, Baltimore, Baltimore positive we are positively here at fade Lee’s in Lexington market. We’re the new space. We got the PacMan scratch offs give weight and get little thin and skinny enough to hit Roz. We’re gonna be back here two weeks doing the Maryland crab cake tour. But more than that, we have Alicia and Jamie here from families in the new space one of the third time I’ve been here. So weirdest thing It feels like I’ve been here a million times. And even through we’re talking about it. We’re just like, it’s so much like the old place other than the light that we have here and then you add on to the street but it is the bigger better families is it not how we do business gotta be up. I’ve been here. I’ve seen the foot traffic. I’ve been here for three hours a couple different times. And a lot of people coming through here. It’s great.
Damye Hahn 00:42
It’s great. We have everything we had over the over the other market all of our old you know, articles and whatnot. But we have sunlight and it’s really nice.
Alicia 00:54
It’s a game change.
Nestor J. Aparicio 00:54
You guys are with with your sunshine and all that.
00:58
Love the sunshine.
Nestor J. Aparicio 01:00
Well I’m it’s gonna be 80 degrees. Next week, we get the Yankees in town and we got an election coming up. We talked about all these things you finally got into this space. Just in time for like this annual thing that I’ve gotten roped into now I knew about the crab race when I worked at the Sun papers in the late 80s How much 25th anniversary coming out this week. So I worked at the sun from 86 to 92. And that was the glory era of Bud Light knights and the Clydesdales and all the Triple Crown and all of that, but you guys give me the history of the crab raise because like Alicia, hit me up this year. And apparently, I was such a lousy crab jockey last year that BJ syrup has gotten together and decided I should be the emcee. So I will be the loud emcee for this one. Very
Damye Hahn 01:43
good, very good. We’re excited to have you as the emcee, we can always find somebody to raise a crab
Nestor J. Aparicio 01:48
or two weeks out three weeks out on this, this is
Damye Hahn 01:53
16th now, Thursday,
Alicia 01:54
May 16, from two noon until three noon to three,
Nestor J. Aparicio 02:00
I did this on my calendar.
Damye Hahn 02:03
Watch the crowd. be hungry when you get here. It’s fake. We’re gonna we’re gonna we’re gonna go on the Promenade. And my father started this crab race years and years ago as a run up for the run up promotion, actually, during the Schaefer years.
Nestor J. Aparicio 02:19
People down to the market, let the wellness be a city wide celebration.
Damye Hahn 02:23
The Preakness was was was a little slow. And they were having you know, they were wanting to do a big push in advertisement for the Preakness. My father in Shaffer had reached out to him my dad said, I’ll throw a crab race. And he’s like a crab race. He says, Yeah, we’ll build a track and we’ll throw a crab race. And he got the local media and all his last
Nestor J. Aparicio 02:50
year you invited me and you didn’t tell me how to anchor the crabs. So I’m out like I’m tickling the crab under the belly I’m like come on buddy. Come on. Here we go crabby crabby. Come on. And and I came into you like yet I hit him in the head with the barber that pisses him off right spray skirt or
Damye Hahn 03:06
water or you can use we have a fishing rod with a bobber you can you can entice them with that. Or you can entice it and of course, you kind of remember that go backwards. Yeah, then we’re sideways, run forward. And that unless you’re in water, they propel with their back legs and go forward but because the little flippers they can’t do forward. There’s little legs, they don’t go forward that much.
Nestor J. Aparicio 03:31
So crab do it from the front. Yes, you
Damye Hahn 03:35
do it from the front end. They want to back away from you. So you want to turn your crab around number one was running sideways? Nobody told me Yeah, the crabs the crabs, though. They’ll they’ll pedal with those back fins. That’s what it gives us that don’t.
Nestor J. Aparicio 03:52
I’m thinking my crabs sick. My crabs already said. Plus, wants to be sushi that
Damye Hahn 03:58
for us. The little females go faster. So you had the choice of Jews and whatever you want to if you want to a little female. I think that would be Jay had the advantage of because he told them he is now Yes. Well, my son he said, What are the fastest ones? He says there’s little females they go like fastest. So he picked a little female. You could have picked a little female. He knew more than you did.
Nestor J. Aparicio 04:22
A little female I picked Alicia. That’s what I did. So tell me about this and how they come down participate. Just come down have longitude. It was right out here in the beautiful in the promenade as
Alicia 04:34
well. Then we also have the crab, the thinking the crab picking contest. We’ll have a quick chicken. Everybody can sign up on evite and it’s who won last year. There’s $100 family gift card prize.
Nestor J. Aparicio 04:47
That’s an art form picking crabs fast and but
Alicia 04:51
making sure that there’s nothing left like no meat. By the
Nestor J. Aparicio 04:54
way, not only did you make the 25th anniversary game, you’re in the actual social mother as your mother staring at you dad’s in it pointing at crab meat that you had dumped. But what? One
Alicia 05:06
of your episodes, man Jamie comes out with the love meat and she’s just holding watermelons.
Nestor J. Aparicio 05:11
Summer watermelons,
Damye Hahn 05:13
Jumbo.
Nestor J. Aparicio 05:16
They were they were jumbo lump. She got a sense of humor they brought they brought that with from the old location that you brought your father’s since Yeah. How
Damye Hahn 05:26
was your dad? My dad’s doing great. Thank
Nestor J. Aparicio 05:29
you for asking. And you got a grand opening coming here in a couple of weeks. But this whole like this, this crab picking thing and all of this stuff. The video we have now has almost 4 million views. The video you want from summers ago, but it is featured it only had like 1,000,008 views at the time because I took picture of a couple of years ago, but it’s in it’s in the documentary. So 32 years of sports radio 40 years of sports media. I still have people come see here to cred picking guy and the crowd picking guy pick the damn thing I went up slice in my hand open afterward. But if you haven’t seen the crowd video ad on Facebook, especially if you’re from East Baltimore, because I I never seen nothing like that still to this day, right with a lollipop thing.
Damye Hahn 06:13
The way we did that was my grandfather family’s method. West Baltimore. Yeah. And so was my hands. It was him in the in the video Matt
Nestor J. Aparicio 06:23
Gallagher, sense of humor, I think is what it was exactly. Like you made the video. So I’ve been like eight weeks now nine weeks focusing on my history, my journey. 25 years people like you that have supported me and all of that. And then you have this year where it’s like 150 years, right? How many? How many? Exactly?
Damye Hahn 06:42
38 130 1886 That’s
Nestor J. Aparicio 06:46
it right there next year crabmeat.
Damye Hahn 06:47
We’re so, so yeah,
Nestor J. Aparicio 06:53
I used to be sophomore, you know, I used to be nasty, nasty. You’re gonna have to do the research.
Alicia 06:57
I did see that last night. I was looking for your email. And I’m like, Alright,
Nestor J. Aparicio 07:01
it explains it all. You don’t even know me. It’s nasty. Yesterday. You know? That’s so funny. Only people only know me. You know, I walked down the street people yell at nasty. You think that’s weird? Yeah. Well, it happened. It’s been going on 25 years at least. And now you’re Baltimore positive? Well, you’re gonna learn the the the reason I was nasty, nasty, you’re gonna learn in the video. So excited. Yeah. And I did run down a stream on to where I admitted that to you a couple of weeks ago. I don’t know what else I would admit to you that you don’t know about me. But like, I was inspired by your family. All of these food networks and stuff. They all want to tell your story because you have such a rich story. It’s different than I mean, even other places. I do business with him at grabs for 50 years. And that’s a great story. And I’m 25 years and that’s pretty good story. But it’s a different thing in 138 years, right, and then picking up and moving the thing over and
Damye Hahn 07:52
picking and moving and moving everything. We don’t add a lot of crap. Yeah, well, a lot of great
Nestor J. Aparicio 07:58
Landry hit me this morning and he said to me, how are you doing? And I admitted to you guys it was like having a baby. Like when this video finally got on Thursday. I’m like, I don’t have to think about anymore have to do any more. I have to clean up picture I have to make sure Dame is in it. Make sure like I’ve tried to like I had final edit yesterday. And don’t tell Steve and Alison Elliot, I forgot to put them in it. And I’m like, Oh, my phone like I know how to pick. Oh, that’s a good one. We’re gonna do that one. And we stuck it in there because I don’t want to leave anybody out. My friends a curio I did not put Wendy in in the cannabis garden. But I did put the curio thing because we had a crab cake and replace up at somoni but I wanted to get everybody in and I would think the same thing tears like you wanted to get every little nugget of ice still. You were based on stuff started to break. You still have stuff that will fit on the walls, right? Yeah, I
Damye Hahn 08:45
do you have an archival storage here too. And we’ve got another building coming up. So well, we’ll get it why couldn’t fit everything into a 36 minute video now. It’s, it’s and there’s so much that that of course, so much of our history, there was no documented documentation of it, you know, there might have been clippings from a from a newspaper that have all fallen apart, you know, so, so you
Nestor J. Aparicio 09:12
need Greg Landrieu from Towson transfers to digitize that for you. Yeah, but
Damye Hahn 09:16
that’s not even that many photos because people didn’t have didn’t have cameras, right. You know, early 1900 I mean, it was really hard, right?
Nestor J. Aparicio 09:26
Well, I’m gonna ask you this. Dumb is smart. What’s the oldest oldest oldest thing you know of? That says babies on it. That is a picture from 18 something 1901 It
Damye Hahn 09:39
probably the old pictures of the old stole but I gotta tell you those it
Nestor J. Aparicio 09:45
says nice hair. Well, that’s a picture from 1912
Damye Hahn 09:47
those terrible things are well over 100 years old with the territory with terrapins the turtles hanging the turtles. Okay, those were my great grandfather’s terrapins that was right
Nestor J. Aparicio 09:59
there real It’s real taxidermy okay?
Damye Hahn 10:01
Yeah that’s that’s 100 year old stuff and it’s it’s it’s literally stuffed with salt us.
Nestor J. Aparicio 10:07
Probably asbestos.
Damye Hahn 10:11
Actually, that was before asbestos. Wow. Even in seven breasts Yeah, literally before so well
Nestor J. Aparicio 10:19
we’ve been here for a couple of hours you can come anytime I’ll be here every other Friday. You can ship these crab cakes. You can bring the shrimp salad Oh my been known to curbside shrimp salad out of your add a little from my belly today. And you did something a couple weeks ago. You You sent me home with scallops. Yeah, I thought I wanted I thought I wanted rockfish Alicia and I said capers beurre blanc and butter and I got my wife all worked up. And then Jamie came over all broken arches were sold at her office and like sold out while doing my job. I’m promoting plays. And she’s like what? But I got scallops and I’m like, Alright, oh, he told me I like scalp you like you like him? Only my wife loves them. She you gave me these things are about as big as a saucer. They were they were late. They were big big. And I said somebody’s trying to mount you like they’re gonna be fine and took them home. My wife did them all up and I sent you the picture the next night. She did. Did you see the picture? This now she did these with pistachio golden raisin. There was some spinach not leeks. Not on your channel. Thank you challenge shower challenge the challenge. So she made these this two weeks ago. So anybody you think about coming down to families and first thing you say is get a crab cake. Everybody gets a crab cake. I mean, I want to do something different. You know I get the mac and cheese. What else Don’t I know about that you do down here not the raccoon or the muskrat. I learned about that last week. What do you do? We’re
Damye Hahn 11:44
we’ve we’ve got of course we got the raw bar. We’re getting ready to start our baked oysters program. So we’re gonna be grilling actually the oysters but we’ve got all of our steam pot Potter’s you know, because you can get anything steam.
Nestor J. Aparicio 11:58
Can you poach like Steam me a couple of shrimp for my kitty. Absolute. I don’t want any old bay they gotta be playing because she’s picky and she’s Princess girl. Rubber belly, I gotta like give her a trip. So
Damye Hahn 12:11
I got fresh Florida shrimp. We’ve got shrimp in from Florida that have not been frozen and they’re beautiful. It’s only a two week season and they’re pink shrimp and they’re gorgeous. So
Nestor J. Aparicio 12:19
five years ago I went into our seafood and Essex which is no longer there but I loved Ali’s a bone marrow transplant survivor. Good man, his son Chad who’s my friend Chad the crab man. I went into his place and he said to me that day I had the scallops. My wife’s like I like scouts so she took them home five years ago and she made this recipe and I’m gonna show you what they look like five years ago this is what this is what they have you can see it on the screen that’s what they look like. And two weeks ago when you said to me sounds like one of the best meals textbooks great like that. You put it off but this is it here. This was a Michael Simon recipe. My wife damn thing two weeks ago a lot quicker.
Damye Hahn 12:56
You we have a Michael Simon trophy here, man, that’s that’s that trophy from food networkers. Well, here’s
Nestor J. Aparicio 13:00
what I want you to do. You’re gonna add this to the menu one day and figure this out. So golden raisins, spinach, white wine, butter, parsley, white pepper, roasted garlic cecl So she made this dish and I showed it to you two weeks. So she made this so I made her she was gonna do some crazy thing with the scouts. Like no, no, no, we got to do especially because they’re so big and beautiful. So we did it and this is what we came up with. So this is what my wife did here. You can see this is like this is sweet potato. She served it with sweet potato and she served it over a bed of spinach. So you can see the way she did that up there.
Alicia 13:34
We’re missing a tag there was
Nestor J. Aparicio 13:38
just no it’s on there. It’s like your friend families Lexington
13:41

you want you to this year get him a fat ass male crap for cheating last year that’s what I’m gonna say. I want it he’ll get so pissed at me because he sees that way. Like if I if I pull his crab before the race and say ineligible on the commissioner that’s what you need to make me the commissioner
Damye Hahn 14:32

Damye Hahn 15:11
I’m going to two of us have tickets for the
Nestor J. Aparicio 15:15
I’m not going, by the way my media pass in whatever punch line you want to put in here, especially if somebody asked me for Mike Elias his email address and actually have it. Is that my that does he do anything for me? My immediate pass is I’m gonna put this in air quotes. Under Review. I’m being reviewed. So I did this 25th anniversary video. I’ve owned an FCC license for 25 years had. So I’m hoping that Mr. Rubenstein, who on the broadcast opening day, you know, this opening day and walkthrough, obviously, you’re a caveman at crabcake. And I went up to the game and I’m walking to second inning and Rubenstein’s doing the game on television like us on the in the box that day’s opening day. And my wife texts me because she wasn’t at the game. She’s like, Oh my God. He just said Louis Aparicio is his all time favorite Oriole. Oh my he said that publicly. Oh my god, and I’m under review. I’m under review. So Good boy. I better I better eat all my crab cakes. So I don’t know they might let me back in they might not but that doesn’t stop me from being a media member. It doesn’t stop me from giving up Pac Man scratch offs. We’re gonna be down here in families in two weeks. The Orioles will still be in first place Jackson holiday I don’t know where he’ll be but the crab cakes here will be great. And get down here on May 16. It’s a Thursday get down for lunchtime stay while enjoying the new market.
